When you just want to run away and nurse your broken heart but murder comes knocking. Lady Dorothea Dorchester, Dodo, flees to her cousins' estate in Dartmoor in search of peace and relaxation after her devastating break-up with Charlie and the awkward attraction to Chief Inspector Blood that caused it. Horrified to learn that the arch-nemesis from her schooldays, Veronica Shufflebottom, has been invited, Dodo prepares for disappointment. However, all that pales when one of the guests disappears after a ramble on the foggy moors. Presumed dead, Dodo attempts to contact the local police to report the disappearance only to find that someone has tampered with the ancient phone. The infamous moor fog is too thick for safe travel and the guests are therefore stranded. Can Dodo solve the case without the help of the police before the fog lifts?
Mysteries in the 1920’s are especially interesting with the clothes, manners, and expected behavior. Add a good mystery and delightful characters, you are sorry when the book is over. Can’t wait for the next Dodo.
Dodo needs someone to vet her choices in men. The available, suitable men are of no interest to her. She obviously likes a challenge but she should stick to solving mysteries. That said this particular mystery was very interesting and difficult to solve. Well done.
A group of people.. stuck in an isolated house.. first one disappears in the fog leaving a hat on the cliff and a scarf in the water below.. then another is murdered..
The group of people includes.. Dodo herself; Bartie and Bunty Gillingham, Dodo's twin cousins; Grenville Post, Bunty's beau; Isabella Dominguez, Spanish opera singer on the cusp of her big break; Walter Montague, an uncouth boorish man; Veronica Shufflebottom, Dodo's school bully; and Rupert Danforth III, Veronica's beau. Plus Lizzie, Dodo's maid and confidante; Mrs Brown the cook and a handful of servants.
Dodo and Bunty try to find the missing guest on the moors without success and Dodo takes the step of informing the local police by phone but with the fog failing to clear there's no way for them to reach the estate. Bartie takes Dodo up on her offer to look into the disappearance much to Veronica's annoyance.
Unpalatable truths will be revealed and secrets won't stay that way but when a second guest is murdered in the night it's clear that all is not well and someone among this rather unusual group appears to be a killer. Food is going missing, Veronica is missing some sleeping powders and laudanum, wool has vanished..
Will Dodo be able to piece together the clues and solve the crime? Can they apprehend the killer before the fog lifts and they can escape?
Unfortunately it's rather obvious to the reader.. it's really rather strange that it doesn't occur to the supposedly clever Dodo.. her refusal to voice the obvious solution is rather irritating and leads me to believe that the author finds it hard to portray either a woman in the 1920's or maybe the aristocracy in general as having much intelligence.. perhaps don't give out every clue immediately.. hold a little something back..
A solid mystery. Dodo is suffering from heartache but she isn't completely devastated. I glad that she doesn't fall in love instantly again or just languish when the police detective rebuffs her but is open to something developing, perhaps, in the future with want seems like a decent man.
First, let me say that this is becoming one of my favorite tropes. A cozy mystery set in 1920's England. This is my first mystery by Ann Sutton and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Interesting characters and a complex enough mystery to not immediately know who did it, though I did figure it out before the reveal. I knew the who but not the why so there was still a mystery to be solved. And I enjoyed the sleuth being a young female socialite. In addition to enjoying Dodo as the solver of mysteries, I also liked her maid and their mutually supportive relationship. My only complaint is my own failing because I have a hard time with names in real life as well as in fiction. I couldn't keep the twin's names straight since they were so similar. But again, that is my bad... This book made for an entertaining afternoon's read. I loved it.
Sex: no Language: no Violence: off page murder, a brief scuffle. *I won this book in a giveaway on StorytellersinZion.com and voluntarily chose to review it.
Although I figured out the murderer long before "the shed" and why ...the journey was pleasant and interesting. Being set on the moors was lovely. I like the relationship between Dodo and Lizzie but I don't like the idea that all society people like Dodo are gorgeous and her maid is plain with a pug nose and that she treats her like a maid too much for my liking. A good 1920s vintage British who dun it for any Downton Abbey fan. Sutton is a good writer. Book could use some editing to eliminate superfluous words and lines.
Whether a winter weekend with walking sticks, foggy fly fishing on the Fens, skiing in sleet stormy Snowdonia, destination irrelevant, demise by dastardly deeds occurs. Amidst the fatal beauty of natural landscapes, unnatural death is acknowledged when the weather admits Scotland Yard to Dodo’s search for the meandering meanace murdering guests in the house party on the Moors. Thank you for your words Ann Sutton, very much appreciated. (-:
trapped in an old house on the Moors, what could go wrong?
Weekend of rest and quiet was all Dodo wanted after her latest breakup. What she got was one man missing another man died! Cutoff by fog, Dodo has to solve the murder before the next murder!
Dodo is literally in a fog this time. She, and her maid Lizzie, head to Dartmoor to visit her cousins, only to find a spur other moment house party. Murder and the infamous fog , people with secrets, old school grudges add to the tangled web.
Dodo is determined to escape after ending a relationship and one that just couldn't be. However, she escapes to Dartmoor only for her a d Pizzas to be thrust into a new mystery while fogged in and cut off from any assistance from any authorities.
This was a quick, entertaining mystery! I loved seeing Dodo solve yet another crime. I enjoyed the new characters in this one and the mystery kept you guessing. I did figure it out before the end, but I still enjoyed it. I would definitely read this one again!
Dodo’s most recent story was another great read. It was interesting to learn some of Dodo’s back story. The possible addition of Rupert in future books would be great as well.
Definitely kept me interested in the storyline. Just one thing...Dodo seems to analyze her relationships far too much. Someone needs to tell her - "When you know, you know!"
