It was fun while it lasted but the ending completely blew it for me. Who wants to read a story only to hear by the end "oh BTW it all doesn't count because I used a time turner and changed it all again"?
Not this girl.

For people who want a story that is Dramione and nothing else, the first book in this series, Clean, is definitely that. For people who want a compelling story that has a Dramione end-game, Marked is perfect.

The promotion of Theo Nott from side-character to major player was inspired. The inter-personal relationships were believably complex without making any characters grating and dislikable. I found myself appreciating contradictory viewpoints (like Ron versus Harry) because the framing for their opinions made sense.

The takeaway for me is that trust is worth the hell and heartache when you trust the right people. (Though sometimes meddling old fools need to be involved.) Will certainly be reading this one again.

II guess 3.5 cause the ending. Never forget: playing with time and time turners is dangerous. Fucking dangerous. Time is cyclic and that's the way it should stay must of the time. Avoid deux-ex-machinas. The point that salvages this piece is that the original timeline is still referenced. Still I wanted to know how that ended. Anyways, the original timeline is gorgeous and the best thing is Theo Nott.

"—Vanilla. Gardenia. Rose.
Did you feel that? she imagined asking him, and for a moment she wondered if she had. Did you feel the earth shift?
His eyes gave her the answer. She heard his voice in her soul.
Yes."

I'm going to do my best with keeping this a spoiler-free review for as long as possible, but don't worry, if I do go on a potentially-spoiling tangent, I'll give you good notice. Also, I'm warning you: This review is going to be pretentious, and dare I say wholly unbearable, in certain places. It's my way of coping, I guess.

If it is that you are on the hunt for a happy ending, I'm unsure whether Marked is the fic for you. Yes, by any traditional definition, it is happy...but to me? Not quite.

Yes, in the end, they are safe and in love and happy just as our beloved Olivie Blake promised, but at what cost? How high is the price of joy, in a story like this one? (Awfully high, by my standards.) If you lose everything that lead you to this point, then what do you even have? (Trying to keep it vague, but also I'm warning you that you might be upset...)

If you want your characters squeaky-clean and Wizarding War-free then I feel like Modern AUs will do, but whatever happened here, in these last few chapters? Wholly unnecessary.

Also, if I may add, Olivie Blake likes Severus Snape too much for her own good. More of an observation than a judgment or a compliment of any sort, but I figured I'd point it out. It does affect the reader's perception of him, which can affect the storyline, and in turn leave you with a sour taste in your mouth. For my fellow anti-Snape readers, at the very least. In certain scenes I found him to be entirely out-of-character, with more personality and snark (and dialogue) than the canon Snape could ever dream of possessing. (This made him more interesting as a character within this, obviously. This is more of a compliment to Olivie Blake's writing than anything, but I just wasn't obsessed?)

Now, I know what you're thinking. And you would be correct. This isn't canon, but darn did I wish it was just a bit closer.

Harry's supportiveness was welcome, of course. You know, especially considering the romance in this fic, but sometimes it felt almost--fake?

There is no way in the depths of HELL that Harry Sarcasm Potter would be so quickly willing to outwardly show his support for his former rival and one of his best-friends dating. No way. None.

As for Ron--well as I said in my review of Clean, I often found him rather OOC--this got better in the sequel, I won't lie. But in return we just got a lot of...Ron-bashing? I'm not sure if that's the correct term, so really, feel free to grill me if I'm wrong...but even when characters were presented the chance to feel even a sliver of sympathy for him, nobody does. Now, yes, he's got the most family out of them all, but he's also got the most to lose. Including Hermione! And well, he sort of does, doesn't he?

Theo Nott. Ah, Theo you beautiful man. What a hidden treasure, honestly. I'd never really gotten the Theo craze but I've gotta say, now I do. He's got a total mind of his own, that one. I also really adored his and Draco's dynamic, whether they were kids or growing older and starting their own lives anew.

All in all, reader, my conclusion is that while Marked is not--persay--a bad ending, it is also not the good one it may claim to be. I suggest finishing off at Clean: much more satisfying. And if you'd like, read my review of Clean.

Happy reading...or not???

"They fell in love because they were always in love."

The plot twist kinda saved this cause I did not to like the direction it was going in. But at the same time…?

I may have liked this more if I had not already read the masterpiece that is The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy. *heavy sigh* Alas, I have and it is more cannon than the OG Deathly Hallows so there really wasn't even a fair chance to this version.

What I noticed here and in Clean, is that these fanfics were nice testing grounds for her later published works. There were conversations and theories that I can trace back to Alone With You in the Ether. Such as the play on multiple lifetimes (in Alone w/y they continually talk about other universes/versions of themselves.) Which this makes sense because what better way to flesh out writing ideas than with something like this. It is not the same though.Hermione and Draco are not Regan and Aldo but I saw the small parallels nonetheless.

In conclusion, I think that the prequel Youth is the best out of this series and recommend that to anyone who likes some angst. If you read clean you should read this to have closure but while this is a dramione fanfic, in Marked it is more of a overall experiences as Theo is a main character and you are focusing on vanquishing all the horcruxes and such as they do in the 7th year.

Spoilers!

I hardly ever give anything 1 star. But the ending for this book totally enraged me. I absolutely loved Clean, I loved everything in Marked up until the time travel. It was totally unnecessary! I'm fine with soul mate trope, I'm even fine with resurrection trope!! I am NOT fine with everything I read in two whole books being make totally irrelevant. So disappointed. Utterly disappointed. This had so much potential.

The original timeline was the absolute best. I'm so sad that it was replaced by the new timeline thanks to the time turner. If the author brought Draco back without having to erase that timeline - which essentially makes it so that nothing we read about happened - this story would have been amazing.

And I hate the ending but the epilogue saved it a little. Just a little. I would've felt less frustrated if Draco and Hermione remembered the original timeline, because in this case, the original timeline would kind of still have happened, albeit only in their heads.

And although most of what I've written are complaints, I did enjoy Marked. Everything was going great until the last few chapters.

*One last thing: In the literary sense, I do have to admit that this was done very well, including the timeturner chapter featuring Dumbledore and Snape that I wish never happened. In the emotional sense, the ending made me feel like the story was a waste.

Puh.

She pursed her lips. "This is dangerous," she sniffed carefully, "and stupid." "Those are your son's favorite ways to describe me," he said, his voice dancing as he tread deliberately over the present tense. /161

"Don't make me say this again, ever," the blond drawled lazily, "but I agree with Weasley." /184

"She is everything to me," Malfoy added quietly after a moment, sitting back in his chair with the air of someone who'd betrayed the last of his secrets. /567

Ron Weasley was having an epically bad day, and that was saying something, considering he'd once almost been murdered by giant spiders. /571

"It's his signet ring." Ron nodded, tossing out a final, audible sigh. "That bloody romantic git," he muttered irritably. /1334

"You should get going," he said, standing from behind his desk. "I have somewhere I need to be." "I don't get to spend the night, Severus?" Theo drawled, rising slowly to his feet. "Darling, please. I feel so used." /2337

"I can only assume you mean that he left bequests for the three of you," Draco said, taking a sip of gilly water. "A shame, really, since that hat of his would really suit me." /2360

"I can't believe I'm saying this, Malfoy," she said softly, "but I think you've forgotten that I grew up with muggles." He blinked. He had forgotten. She reached for his hand, smiling. It was a small mistake, but an important one, in the grand scheme of things. Potter cleared his throat. "I know you're having a moment," he said awkwardly. "But I also grew up with muggles, so if you could fill me in-" /2367

"Come on, Malfoy," Potter agreed, nudging him. "Tell us a bedtime story." Draco sighed irritably. "Fine," he said curtly. "Though you should know that I hate all of you." "Cheers to that," Weasley said, raising his cup of pumpkin juice. /2376

"Yes, wonderful, thank you," Draco said impatiently. "Would you care to finish the story, then?" "No," Potter said, grinning. "You tell it, Malfoy. Your voice is so soothing." /2387

"Or," Fred said loudly. "What if we all just show up anyway?" George stood suddenly, slamming his hands on the table. "PLOT TWIST!" "Really, hear me out," Fred said quickly. /2460

Maybe it just matters that a soulmate is someone who follows you in all your lives." She'd let herself mirror his smile. "You think this is just one of our lives?" "Well, I hardly think that matters, Granger," he said casually. "This life or any other, you'd have me." He'd kissed her fingers slowly, pulling her towards him again. "This life or another, you won't be alone." /2576

"I don't have a good feeling about this at all," she said distressfully, beginning to pace through the room. "I don't have a clue what Harry's purpose is to this, and I don't like it. I do not like it." "I wouldn't worry about it," Ron said with a shrug, his blue eyes dancing as they followed her back and forth. "I mean granted, Harry's a good looking guy, but Malfoy seems relatively fond of you." She leaned back in the chair, tipping the back of her head against it and closing her eyes wearily. "Ronald Weasley, you are the living worst." /665

"Actually, the Chamber of Secrets," Potter corrected him, in the same voice Draco might have said "Actually, I'll have another helping of treacle tart," or "Actually, I rather like bunnies." Helena shuddered. "I dare not enter," she said fearfully. "Why not?" Potter said brightly, holding the door open for them and gesturing inside. "The giant killing snake is dead, you know." He leaned towards Draco. "Because I killed it," he whispered gleefully. "I know," Draco said with a tight-lipped eye roll. "How could I forget?" At Potter's careless shrug, he shook his head. "No, seriously. How could I forget. Because I'd very much like to." /2856

Potter let out a swift, barking laugh and clapped him on the shoulder. "Malfoy, I cherish you!" he said jovially. "But really. No more killing snake." /2876

"Look," he said excitedly, pointing to the indistinct script that had spread over the tiny metal sphere. "It says something here-'I open at the close.'" They paused, looking at each other. None of them showed any signs of recognition at the phrase. "Oh good," Ron said grimly. "Silly me, I was worried Dumbledore was going to be vague about it." /3151

"Then bring them," Dudley said quickly. "Bring your Order here. I'll-I'll explain it to my parents." Or not. Honestly, that seemed like it'd be too much work. /3441

"The curse you used, the sectumsempra-the same one Potter used on Draco-you know the countercurse, right?" "Yes," Snape said impatiently, pausing. "And I am also the only one who does, which is why I'm-" "Well, you can just tell the Dark Lord that I was delayed due to life-threatening injury," Theo said breathlessly. "He won't blame you. There was nothing you could have done to prevent it." Snape blinked. "What?" Theo sighed. "Fuck me," he muttered under his breath, pointing his wand at his chest. "Sectumsempra." Are those my veins? he thought whimsically, watching with fascination as they burst open. The side of his face was introduced to the hard-packed ground with a deafening smack right before everything went black. /3903

"I understand I'm not exactly in the position to make requests, but I'd love it if you just focused on my own sins, thanks," he said, his eyes dancing mischievously. "They're numerous, but perhaps more to your liking." /3936

"Easy," Theo said breezily. "I'll go rogue." He yawned widely, and Remus had the faint impression the gesture had been for show. "Just call me Severus Snape: The Sequel." Snape muttered something incoherent under his breath. /3971

"You dressed up a muggle as Potter and sent him off with Draco's old house elf?" Theo said incredulously, his voice several decibels louder than necessary. "You're all fucking maniacs." He struggled to his feet. "I want in." Snape looked as though his head might explode. "Theo-you can't-this isn't-" "Save your speeches, Severus," Theo said pompously, swaying slightly where he stood. "Your sweet nothings have no effect on me." "I should have let you die," Snape told him casually, and Theo offered him a dramatic, irreverent bow. /3978

"Alright," Fred grunted unenthusiastically. "Maybe he can stay." "Oh, he can definitely stay," George said brightly. "Anyone who sasses Snape like that is alright in my book." "We really need to establish much more selective recruiting guidelines," Remus said sadly, even as a smile crept across his face. /3993

"Go home, Nott," Snape said, relatively fondly. Theo stood dramatically. "Oh Severus," he drawled, feigning a swoon. "Home is wherever I'm with you." Snape sighed. "Get out of my house." /4453

"You know," he said loudly, a wide, genuine smile crossing his face for the first time that night. "It really would be such sweet revenge, to see the Dark Lord destroyed in part by house elves and muggles," he said vehemently. "It has a refreshing air of cosmic justice to it, doesn't it?" "You know, Geraint," Harry mused, smirking impishly. "I do believe you're right." /4705

"Why didn't you open with that?" Draco snapped, leaping to his feet. "Did it slip your mind that now the Dark Lord is going to be hunting-" He stopped. "Wait. I'm dead." /5168

Fuck. "Pack the tent, would you?" Fuck. "And grab Potter's cloak." Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck everything. "We'll need it." /5631

"How dare you," Theo muttered, clearly fighting back tears. "How fucking dare you-" "I'm sorry," Malfoy was saying, over and over. Hermione couldn't see his face from behind Theo's but she could tell that his voice, too, was choked with emotion. "I'm sorry-I had to go, I thought it would be safe for you-" "You've always been such a fucking idiot, Draco, you could have trusted me-" "I know, I should have-I know, I'm sorry-" "-I took the fucking Mark to find you, you unbelievable arsehole-" "-that's insane, you're a fucking idiot-" "-you don't know the fucking half of it-I've been looking for you-" "-I was going to find you, I swear, I was fucking coming back for you-" "-and you look fucking stupid with this hair-it's not your color at all-" "-it wasn't my choice, none of this was, I fucking swear-" "-you fuck, I've-I've missed you, I needed you here-" /5687

Theo gave them both a haughty look of impatience as Hermione turned to kiss Malfoy's cheek. "This is what I've been missing?" he asked, his tone bored. "Tremendous. You're disgusting, and frankly, I've never been so pleased." /5717

Weasley's brow was heavily furrowed. "Why do I get the feeling we can't trust you, Nott?" Because you can't. His loyalty was to her, not to them. His loyalty was to Draco. /7478

"Did you think about what our life could have been?" she asked softly, meeting his stormy grey eyes. "You know," she said hazily, motioning with her hand to reference their past. "Then." "I was going to marry the fuck out of you, Granger," he said loftily, and she laughed tearfully at that, the statement somehow both unspeakably touching and yet so inarguably Draco Malfoy. /7782

"Will you stay?" she interrupted hopefully, wriggling in his arms to tilt her head towards him. "Will you stay here?" Yes, yes, absolutely, I'm not letting you go, I'll never fucking let you go-"I can't," he sighed tightly, burying his face in her hair. "You saw Granger. I can't leave her alone." /8076

"I can't have you," he reminded her, picking up her left hand and tracing her finger where someone else's ring would someday go. "Oh, Theo." She sighed heavily. "You already do." /8093

"Well," he said quietly. "What should we do first? Take over the Ministry, or take out a Dark Lord?" "Why don't we flip a coin?" she suggested drily, wiping her eyes on the back of her sleeve. They smiled at each other. "Let's go fix this fucked up world, Granger," he said gruffly. "Sounds like a plan," she murmured. /8130

"A better world," Hermione said softly. He always knew her, didn't he? Through and through. He never let her forget. "You have to make it," he told her forcefully. "Even without me. You have to make it." "Okay," she whispered. "For you." He shook his head. "For you," he told her. "For us." /8414

"I'm going to kill him," Draco corrected her, crossing his arms and drumming his fingers in agitation. "I'm going to come back to life just to slap him." "Ah, well," Theo said, shrugging. "He never listened to me anyway." He came slowly to his feet. "Much to his detriment, I might add." At that, Hermione smirked at Draco. /8505

For someone who was still standing, Theo could barely manage to breathe. /8630

Moving on. Moving on-from what? He'd never known. "Go back," Narcissa urged. "Go back to Hogwarts." "I can't go back," he muttered. "I can't." All was well? Not hardly. /9191

"What are you, my gal pal?" The phrase poked delicately at his brain. /9400

Did you feel that? she imagined asking him, and for a moment she wondered if she had. Did you feel the earth shift? His eyes gave her the answer. She heard his voice in her soul. Yes. /9440

"As if I can be expected to participate in matching jumpers," Draco grumbled, still not fully recovered from the horrifying ordeal. "And in Gryffindor colors, honestly?" "I thought you looked lovely," Harry said, his face reddening with contained laughter. "I did," Draco sniffed. "But that's hardly the point." Harry's festering laughter continued. "Honestly, I'm not sure anything beats your mum's reaction to it-" "She has truly never looked so revolted in her entire life, I'm sure," Draco agreed, picturing the blanched look on Narcissa's face. "I think she might have had Granger obliviate her after seeing me in it." /9700

"Take it," Draco said simply, eyeing her from across the room. "Accept. Right now." She frowned. "But-" "Take it," he repeated, giving her one of his silencing glares. "But why me?" she insisted, standing up to pace their office. "You should be on it-" "Take it," he said again, his tone bored as he bent to flip the pages of the case law before him. "But-" "Take it." "-I've no experience, and really, I-" "Take it." "-can't imagine this is a good idea-" "Take it." /9773

"So," he managed hoarsely, after a minute or two of silently taking in the way her golden brown eyes caught the light. "What do you think, Granger?" This life or any other. "Not to be indelicate," Hermione replied, fighting a smile. "But I think I'm going to marry the fuck out of you." /9803

I’m being really generous giving this three stars. I kinda hated it.
Okay that’s not true. I LOVED the first bit. It took a super wild turn and now I hate it. the plot and the writing were incredible. I fucking love Draco, but this just… the ending ruined it for me.
Clean is still good. But I’m just going to pretend like this never happened for my own sanity. Maybe you’ll love it, or maybe you’ll hate it like me. Good luck either way.

Again, allow me to reiterate that Snape’s formal speech seemed forced. And I can never imagine him speaking so uncharacteristically to Theo when they were on their brooms as the Order decided to trick the Death Eaters. Swearing at him out of exasperation. Also after that the unlikely blossoming reluctant friendship from occulumency lessons at Spinner’s End between Theo and Snape. Its really odd and irreverent to see Theo addressing Snape as Severus as if he was his equal and chatting like two old friends.

I’m not a fan of multiverse or parallels. So the ending was incredibly disappointing. It also seemed rushed, only a few chapters stood between Snape being told by Dumbledore of the actual situation and various versions of endings where Draco and Hermione were star crossed lovers fated to die until they found each other after the war had ended the last chapter. The ending wasn’t satisfying as it concluded in a few brief paragraphs echoing the words they promised to one another, leaving it hanging in the air.

However, the multiverse ending explained the instant attraction between Draco and Hermione at the start. I thought it was too much attraction when they set their sights on one another in the first series.

Side note: olivieblake has brought to my attention an incomplete fanfic called revival by elleaeterna. The writing is impressive and the plot is just as commendable, however it has stopped being updated since 2018. I wish the author will come back to complete it.

olivie blake, you absolute literary genius.

crying, because exhibit a:

"I love you," he murmured from afar. Busy as she was, she wasn't listening, and he found he was grateful. He doubted she would even understand.

"You'll never know how much," he whispered, quietly resigning himself to his fate.

and exhibit b: pulling a freaking cop-out at the end by making it as if it never happened.

i absolutely loved clean and i love every single one of olivie blake's / alexene farol follmuth's books, and i love her writing in this. but no. absolutely not. time-travel is the worst idea to ever put in a book, and especially at the END? ruining a potentially morally-grey main character and pushing her to be—ugh—good?

finally, exhibit c: realizing i went through nearly 40 chapters just for it all to be erased, all for a non-canon couple that i fell in love with when i was in 5th fucking grade.

the stress is really getting to me.

I can't fucking believe I am giving this story 4 stars but it gave me so much joy, which also I can't believe because the first part was mostly useless Dramione smut. But this, oh my fucking god, even if it was just the plot thing about the time turner and Dumbledore reliving the entire timeline, again and again, it would have occupied my mind for so long. I am very surprised that some people hated it so much haha. Including the canon was so amazing, I loved it. Also, I am a sucker for nostalgia (from childhood and from another life lol) and emotional manipulation accompanying it so I loved it.

At first, when I started enjoying it, I wondered if my standards have plummeted because how else could I have been enjoying this story when the last one was very, very average full of gratuitous smut. There was very little to the plot, much of it towards the end. It might be the case that, as I read both the books one after the other, I am confusing the good parts from the first book to be parts of the second one. Either way, the second one is miles ahead. Maybe shifting the focus away from the smut allowed for more room for characters and the plot (not saying this didn't have sex scenes or that I was ever complaining much). As I have already said though, that I am a sucker for nostalgia and as more characters were interacting with Draco here, the chances of nostalgia for the canon storyline being used were abundant here and the efforts were very successful in manipulating me. The first time I couldn't contain my excitement about enjoying this book came from Draco telling the Tale of the Three Brothers to the trio, while Ron interrupted him repeatedly and Harry told him to continue with the story as his voice is more soothing. The subsequent friendship that forms between the trio and Draco is beautiful, to say the least, and detrimental to my mental health and my pile of work to say the most. Draco and Harry reintroducing themselves to each other with almost the same words from the Sorcerer's Stone book slightly rearranged kills me and I haven't even begun to talk about Theo. What an utter delight to have this fucking God in the storyline. His and Snape's encounters are so funny. That reminds me how so much of the book was laugh-out-loud funny, how I could see Snape saying all of that witty dialogues quite drily and Dumbledore being whimsical.
There were things I didn't enjoy as well obviously and if I spend too much time dwelling on it I might reduce the rating which I really don't want to because of the fucking plot twist. I didn't really like the whole Dudley thing, it seemed very out of character but I understand and excuse it because of the emotional satisfaction it's supposed to bring us. I had started to feel bored of the Hermione storyline after Draco's death and I would have been very anxious if had continued but instead, the author gave the most amazing plotline to follow that they could have in my opinion because it just makes so much sense in my mind. (more on that later, as you can tell it has me enamored)
I also feel that the writing itself was better in this one as compared to the last, especially towards the end, the way Death is talked about, Draco telling Hermione the invisible red string story (which later Narcissa repeats aaaaahhh, also reminds me of Narcissa telling Theo to obliviate her after Lucius threatens her), and everything after the brilliant plot twist when there are these glimpses of all the people in the last chapter, it is so, so beautifully painted.
Now coming to my favorite part of the story, if you still can't tell, it is Dumbledore talking about the timelines. Firstly, Sirius and Harry living together. It just warms my heart that even though this timeline didn't turn out to be the one Dumbledore (and the entire world) wanted it to be, Harry still got to grow up with Sirius somewhere at some point in time. I love that Narcissa and Sirius reconciled and Harry and Draco and Theo grew up as friends. I like that the canon mostly remains true in this story as the final timeline. I like that it explains how Dumbledore knew so much and that it wasn't like everything just went right, one thing after another, that led to Voldemort's fall. I like (later as it hit me) that the insta-love that I thought was so abhorrent in the first book is explainable because they had already fallen in love in the first timeline. I LOVE the little remnants that they feel in the last timeline, it's so beautifully written. I know I'm being emotionally manipulated not unlike how comedians use callbacks, but as I already know from Jane the Virgin and This is Us, I am a sucker for those and it is well done here.
All the relationships are pretty great but I keep thinking about Harry and Draco, it's just so satisfying to see them become friends. Even in the canon timeline, we just have to ignore the epilogue and everything fits. Oh the things i would do to see this story on screen. Remove the sex scenes I wouldn't care, just give me some Draco +the golden trio.
All of these stars are dedicated to all the fanfic writers who toil away for almost no glory. thank you.
i will stop being cringy now (is it even possible)

The last quarter of this was….something 🫠😵‍💫 It kinda ruined the entire story for me actually, and that sucks because I highly enjoyed the rest of it. On a positive: this is the first fic I’ve read where Dudley Dursley takes on a large role and it rocked, more of that please

The story is brilliantly crafted and caught me completely off guard.

I went through a whirlwind of emotions: I was irritated, then sad, then intrigued, and finally left in awe. It truly felt like an emotional rollercoaster.

Theo, in this book, became one of my favorite characters.

Quite frankly… what the fuck. I don’t even think I can rate this. I loved Clean, so I don’t know if I’m broken and in denial… it was good, but at times the plot felt entirely inconsequential.

Startade som en stark 4, tills Draco dog och allt där efter gick snabbt ner.

I wasn't sure about this for a moment, but I never should have doubted. All my favorite things rolled into one bc Olivie Blake somehow always writes exactly what I want.

This life or any other.
