This is one of the best books Riley Hart has written, which is saying something as she's a successful and prolific author.
For real, The Endgame has it all:
● Closeted (we're talking depths of Narnia kind of closet) football player, all ripped abs and kind heart, and liberal, out & proud senator from California, who cares about people more than politics
● True life angst as Anson struggles with his sexual identity, not willing to give up football or West
● Great cast of secondary characters, including Anson's brother Elias who's a paraplegic following a childhood accident for which Anson blames himself (which makes Elias ragey because there's nothing wrong with him, thank you very much); Darren, Anson's best friend; and other friends and family (supportive and unsupportive - I'm giving the middle finger to West's despicable, hateful father)
● Smoldering, deliciously wanton sexy times (Anson throws himself into gay sex like a starving man on a Christmas ham)
● The way the MCs cared about each other, flying across the country to spend but a few hours or days together; the way they bantered and listened and loved (West calling Anson "Bashful" did me in)
● Wonderful ending (a truly hard-earned HEA)
Ya know what made me crazy angry, though (and this has naught to do with the author)?
Commence rant: I hated that Anson had to stress about coming out publicly, like what straight athlete calls a press conference to announce they're straight? Yet here we are in 2021, and anyone not cis and heterosexual is still treated like a roadside attraction. Fuck that shit. My kids never have to "come out" to me. I'm so damn sick of bigots.

My favourite by this author so far. There was something about the characters and the way their relationship developed that grabbed me right from the start and kept me invested in the story until the end.
I loved so many things about Anson and West – their personalities, how they met, the texts and the phone calls, the attraction between them, their connection and being there for each other. I enjoyed all of it.
I really liked some side characters, too, especially Darren and Elias. I wish we got to know Darren a little bit better, though. I like the side characters to have more purpose to the story than just notice when something's wrong with the MCs and offer their support.
There were some scenes towards the end that were too sappy for my taste, the ones involving the family members, but they didn't bother me here as much as they usually do. For the most part I didn't want to put this book down.

I've read a number of Riley Hart over the years, and they have been hit or miss with me, but The Endgame struck all the right chords.
Look, I know it's an unhealthy obsession, but I have a thing for sexual exploration stories. They just always get me, both in my feels and in my *ehem*... other places. Though Anson always knew he was gay, listening to him have all of these new and shiny sexual experiences with a man for the first time... whew, I loved it.
Sometimes Riley Hart can rush the sexual side of a romance, but she took her sweet-@ss time here, and I love her for it. I'm a glutton for punishment, and I like the sexual tension to build to a *tangible* level. I loved how Anson was kind of skittish and West had to coax him out of his shell (aka, pants). In a very consensual way, of course, but getting over Anson's fear and self-loathing was no easy task.
I loved everything about this book. The side characters, the plot, the sex (YES), the romance: it all complemented each other and made the book feel epic. Plus, Iggy Toma narrated the hell out of this book, by far my favorite performance by him. I wanted to stay up all night long to keep listening, it was that good.
Truly, The Endgame is Riley Hart at her best.

Man oh man, I'd all but written Riley Hart off. Terrible to say I know, but I just had not enjoyed her stuff as of late. And never liked her collaborations with DM. But something about this one called to me. I do love a good sports romance after-all.
This one gave me that feeling. Where you never want the book to end. And you're constantly stealing minutes here and there just to read a little bit more. I love that feeling. And it's so rare these days.
So yeah, I LOVED this one. All caps LOVED.
I wish I could start all over and have that same feeling again. Really hoping Darren's book packs the same punch.

Realistically grounded, emotionally charged, and deeply romantic, The Endgame is one of the best M/M sports romances I’ve ever read.
Anson is one of the NFL’s top players, badass at the game and known for his loyalty and dedication to his family and friends. He’s also deeply, deeply in the closet, fearing his football career—his greatest passion—would be at stake if his sexuality ever became public knowledge. He lives his life emotionally locked down, keeping his authentic self smothered under a lifetime of perceived guilt and responsibilities to those around him. But when he meets Weston in a hotel bar, everything Anson has tried so hard to keep locked away comes bursting forth, and he finds himself no longer able to deny his true identity... or the chance to love and be loved in return, like he damned well deserves.
Weston is a US senator, doing the good fight to make the world a better place and living openly and proudly as a gay man known publicly for his revolving door of hook-ups. But when West meets Anson, all bets are off. He finds himself wanting more than he ever has before, but he can see the football superstar is hurting, full-on in denial of his sexuality and refusing to acknowledge his obvious attraction to West. So, offering friendship and a safe place to open up is the next best thing West can do for Anson, especially if it means not letting their connection go completely. But the more these men talk and get to know each other, over long-distance video chats, the more involved they get, and before they know it, one night of passion turns into one secret rendezvous after another, as they fall deeper and deeper into love.
Dealing with the reality of Anson’s situation is tough on both of them, but the closer they get, the stronger they become, and Anson soon realises that being true to himself, and his love for West, may just be worth any fallout that may happen if he comes out to his family, team and the greater public.
This story was heavy on the 'closeted gay man in denial' theme, but damn it was done well. I felt every longing, every fear and moment of guilt and rejection that Anson experienced during this whirlwind story. His burden was a heavy one to carry but I was so grateful that he had a rock like West to help him through it all. It also didn’t hurt that Anson’s family and friends were made up of such great, loving, supportive characters, so even before he came out to them, I was confident in the fact it would all be okay.
It’s still absolutely disgusting to me that this stigma is even placed on queer athletes. In this day and age, it seems so backwards to me, even if it is still very much a reality, specifically in certain sports like football. But, regardless of my frustrations on this topic, I did appreciate how genuine the issues were handled and how honestly Anson’s journey was told, angst and all.
Anson and West were a great couple. In fact, upon reflection, they’re probably one of the best couples Riley Hart has written in her career—which is high praise from me because I’m a hardcore fangirl and love everything Hart does. I truly felt for Anson and West, through all the ups and downs of their hard but worthwhile relationship. I couldn’t help but fall in love with them and root for their successes, in life and love.

Out and proud senator, who is also a complete player, with a closeted gay virgin NFL star? Yes please!!!
I loved the angst, the passion, the heat, the push and pull, and finally watching them give in to their deep attraction and admit they wanted more from each other. I loved all the secondary characters. I loved the football and the politics.
I adored the book until about 75%. Then it felt like we had to witness them tying every single end with a neat little bow. I often complain about authors skipping the coming out, or the meeting of the family, and going straight to the epilogue. But this was too much. Coming out to the friend crushing on him. The brother. The mom. The best friend. The other parents. The team. The media. Omg enough already. You don’t need to tell us everything, we can use our imagination to fill in some blanks.
Oh and the Bashful nickname annoyed me. It was cute at first, but way overused by the end.
But overall, loved the book and I definitely recommend it, especially if you like closeted athlete stories as much as I do. 😘❤️

I loved Anson and Weston, their differences and their growing connection. Their chemistry was amazing.
I was glued to the pages wanting them to get where they deserved to be.

April 24, 2021I stopped reading this one yesterday because I got bored, I thought that maybe today I would keep going but I just don't want to. 😔😪
Riley is a hit or miss for me, mostly misses but I had high hopes for this. The thing is, it was more of the same:
- A closeted character that can't be out because of his job.
- An out and proud character that is obviously out and takes a liking to the first character.
- Experimenting to get the first one to feel what is like to be himself.
- A lot of hurt, fear and pining.
- Both characters thinking the other one does not want him and viceversa.
*sighs* This is an overused formula, specially in sport stories and there is a reason for that, sports are a very homophobic field. I researched yesterday (because the book couldn't keep my attention) and all the players that are out did it after they ended their careers, is fucked up, so there is a reason for this kind of tropes.
And that gets me to my second issue of this book, the why I didn't want to keep going even though I do read books like this when they are done right: I didn't care about the characters, at first I really liked Anson, he was kind, fun and really repressed, then I met Weston and he was really sure of himself almost to the point of being annoying, but I thought that that could change, I mean in The One that Got Away I didn't like Takoda at the beginning but I ended up loving him. That didn't happen here, specially when at the 30% mark the two characters seemed like the same one, I had to re-read a lot of dialogs because I got confused with who was saying what.
So yeah, I was not liking it and I was even thinking of skipping the sex scenes wich is not like me, so I decided to leave it at 49%, not rating because there is a lot of story that I'm not reading.

so far, i think this is the best one for me from riley hart. i highly enjoyed it from start to finish. the usual case about a closeted gay guy falling in love for the first time. the moment anson hawkins, a footballer from atlanta lightning, finally let go of his inhibitions to enjoy what it feels like to be with a man, that scene sealed the rating for me. my emotions were all over the place while i was reading this. i like ans as a character but damn my heart was constantly breaking for west calloway, an out senator, for most of the time. imagine fighting for equal rights but you yourself is a secret boyfriend? ugh, the tension and drama. the only niggle was how this book got dragged for certain parts. nothing for me to say more but this: generic trope but written so well. excited for the next one!

The Endgame is a winner.
Anson and West are one of my favorite couples ever!!! They are the best romantic partners that allow each other to grow and mature with consistent support and empathy displayed throughout this story. I especially loved West's patience and utter support for Anson as he struggles with accepting and living his authentic self, which was lovely to see written so honestly without judgment.
I love Riley Hart's stories and this is a definite favorite. I devoured this story in one sitting and cannot wait for more in this lovely world.

Sports (football) M-M romance. 1st in the Atlanta Lightening series.
Anson is a 26 year old professional football player denying his sexuality. Or at least hiding it. Until he meets Weston. Their mutual attraction is strong and Anson can’t resist starting a relationship though he’s never taken those steps in the past.
A first relationship for Anson as he comes to terms with who he is and what he thinks is important from life.
It has to be the record for highest number of “fucks” per page in a story.
Some funny quips where I laughed out loud.
Relatively tame sex encounters become explicit as Anson becomes comfortable and falls in love.
I was worried about too much angst going in but was soon captured by the powerful personalities and their steadiness in character. They didn’t lie or play games with each other which I appreciated.

When he finally came out to his brother, hit was so emotional that I cried. Anson’s family and friends are accepting without question.
🎧 I listened to an Audiobook version narrated by Iggy Toma. He did a good job differentiating between the two men and a couple of main characters. Emotions were expressed very clearly.

I’m always sad when structurally well written books fall short when it comes to the plot/characterizations. The premise had all the pieces there and pretty much none of how it was executed worked for me.
I know I’ve said this repeatedly, but West being a Senator might have been the most egregious offense in this thing! Look I can suspend belief with the best of them, but there were zero attempts to even try to make it believable. It was too far removed from reality (I.e. he seemingly had tons of free time, hardly mentioned anything of substance about his job, was always in pap shots yet also moved around totally undetected???, etc.) that it became a distraction that pulled me out of the story. Also, his personality bugged me. There was no reprieve from his nonstop self indulgent, egotistical, overtly sexual quips. Every time Anson tried to be serious, and he was STILL making those little deflecting jokes, I wanted to toss my iPad.
Anson was sweet and a likable character, but nothing about his romance with West really pulled me in. It improved some once feelings were revealed, but then it fell off and pretty much dragged through to the end. The last 25% is a series of coming out convos and almost nothing else.
Anyway, if I was someone who could DNF books I would’ve quit this one. I’m in the minority as lots of people loved it, so feel free to ignore me 😌

This book started off fan-fucking-tastic. I was immediately drawn in and the pacing of the story was super pleasant. The characters were easy to care for and appeared vulnerable in a way that made their experiences feel real. The general plot was also rich and full of very authentic problems and insecurities.
There is no doubt in my mind that Weston and Anson love each other deeply, and that's honestly amazing. Their romance felt like it was really fleshed out and developed on an emotional level.
Maybe their relationship became a bit too intense though, which made the novel become slightly repetitive at the end. Don't get me wrong, I loved their deep bond, but it could have perhaps been shown somewhat less. Instead, maybe throw in some more conflict in there between the two of them?
Other than that, West and Anson were a great couple and shared a super entertaining, yet emotional, journey together that had me swooning plenty of times.

Overall Opinion: This was great for the first 75ish%! It then felt like Anson flipped a switch and pressed fast forward on the ending and everything got wrapped up way too easily from there. I honestly liked the angsty obstacles they had to deal with and found it a little disappointing when it just did a complete 180 and was way too fast for the size of those obstacles being navigated so easily (if that makes sense 🙈). The ending could’ve been soooo much better too! If you’re already lining up all the ducks with pretty little bows, you might as well give us an amazing HEA, right?! Sadly, no. I felt like while it was a cute epilogue it simply wasn’t enough for this greedy reader. Overall, this felt like it could’ve been great — but, unfortunately, ended at a little more than 3 “just okay” stars.
Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Anson and Weston’s story. They meet in a bar when they spark a conversation that ends with Anson panicking and leaving because Weston propositioned him. Anson is deeply closeted because of his career playing professional football, and Weston is out and proud as a California Senator. They cannot forget their interaction and the instant connection they felt and Weston finds out who Anson is and reaches out to him via Instagram. Anson gives in and allows himself to admit that he is gay and they start a flirty friendship through messages that quickly changes when Weston proposes a night to try out being with a man, him. There is some fun banter, some sexy times, and some drama...and they get a HFN ending.
Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Anson and Weston’s POV.
Overall Pace of Story: Good until the end. I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well otherwise.
Instalove:No, but instalust and instant connection.
H1 (Hero #1) rating: 4 stars. Anson. I liked him. He was kind of a mess and understandably so, but I liked how he cared for Weston.
H2 (Hero #2) rating: 4 stars. Weston. I liked him. I appreciated how patient he was with Anson and how much he cared for others.

Heat level: Hot. They have some hot tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Cheating: Not IMO
Separation: No, once they get together they stay together
Possible Triggers: Yes
Closure: This ends in a good place but it felt a little too easy and tidy to me. I would call this a HFN ending because I wanted much more.
Safety: This one is probably Safe with exception for most safety gang readers depending on personal preferences

Absolutely fabulous sports romance from Riley
This is going to the top of my 'favourite Riley Hart books' alongside Crossroads.
It's a spectacularly good sports romance which skirts perfectly the line between too much angst and not enough discomfort when considering the pressures of being a gay sportsman.
Until just a few short weeks ago there was no out NFL player. Let that sink in a moment.
The damage it must do to someone's psyche to have to contemplate what might happen to their career is incomprehensible to me.
With this book, Riley gives us one way in which that scenario might develop and I was so here for it all.
Anson and Weston were both beautifully drawn characters and I loved how they developed their friendship first.
I also really appreciated how much they talked to each other, about their fears, their developing feelings, what might be their future if Anson came out.
There's no annoying misunderstandings in this narrative, just two men who stumble into a lifetime's happiness without planning it.
There's plenty of tensions, it's a slow burn physical relationship for many reasons.
But once they go all in, boy do they fire up the heat. There's some truly beautiful moments as Anson finally gets the chance to explore his sexuality and work out his favourite things to do with and to West.
I adored both of these men so much for different reasons. Anson may have outwardly seemed the vulnerable one, but truly West had the fractured core.
His father was an absolute *&%#=€^ and I hated how much he still had that small boy's desire to please a man who would never care.
Anson's mum, by contrast, I definitely grew to love as she came to terms with her son's sexuality.
His brother Elias was awesome, as were the other secondary characters floating around the scene.
I'm looking forward now to finding out all about Jeremy and Darren!

One of the best sports romances I’ve read.
A No1 player meets a deeply closeted, virginal football player.
This ticks so many wonderful boxes!
Anson really goes through the wringer on his journey to accepting who he is and letting himself live. And out and proud senator West is super understanding and an all-over wonderful (and hot) guy.
Loved how their relationship gradually becomes more and more, and how each guy finds that difficult to cope with for different reasons. Falling in love against better judgement causes quite a bit of emotional agony.
Great writing here! Ahh ... the glorious anguish and crackling UST! . And the even sweeter firsts for Anson! Lots to swoon about, that's for sure!
Thank God, there are no silly misunderstandings or break-ups in the last third of the book, but considering how much time is spent on Anson agonizing over his sexuality and what to do with it, the solution felt a bit hurried and easy, without any major hick-ups along the way. But I guess Anson suffered enough up to that point! 😁

iggy toma did a great job narrating this book as well. i just wish i could read this like the first time again. ugh so cute!

"You’re my endgame. You’re it for me"
i really enjoyed the first like 60% of the book. It was fun and flirty and easy with just enough drama and obstacles to add that "forbidden" aspect. But after that, it got so dragged out, I'm surprised i didn't DNF the book. While the chapters were still fun, humorous and had a good flow going on, it seemed so unnecessary. I could've gone through this book with them.
Both Weston and Anson were sweethearts but they didn't have anything special to differentiate them from other characters. They weren't too interesting. so Overall i think this is just a 3 star read for me.

I loved everything about this book: West and Anson, relationships and character development, sweet moments and serious conversations. There is an instant connection between West and Anson, but it takes time to fall in love. The romance was real and despite all the differences, those two fit like two pieces of a puzzle. There is not much angst in this book and never between MCs. They talked, and once trust was built, they never betrayed it.
There were some sad moments when my heart hurt for both West and Anson, but it was never broken. The book is warm and hopeful with perfect epilogue.
