How well do you listen? If you are like many people, you could use some serious effort to improve. This book provides many useful tips and guidelines for improving listening skills, and hopefully greater success in relationships and business. Rather than being a passive act, the true art of listening requires focus and presence, is active and involved. The author presents seven well-written helpful chapters addressing every aspect of listening using friendly, conversational text, sample interactive dialogs as examples, and ways to practice and hone your listening skill. There may be some aspects of the book that have been covered in other similar materials, but the author writes, organizes, and explains the material well, creating an accessible guide and a good choice to read on this subject. An enjoyable and useful book full of reminders and refreshers on how to put your best ear forward.

Very interesting and thought provoking book. It is a multidimensional book, covering a broad spectrum of communication on many levels.
I don’t have a problem listening, but have much to learn how to validate, listen to understand where the other person is coming from, not interrupt with questions, which I thought was part of being good listener.
I highly recommend this book, James did an excellent job in covering so many aspects of conversing and listening.

**“When we are taught about listening, it’s often presented as a passive skill, something you have to do while you allow your eyes to glaze over, your mind to drift, all as you simply wait for your opportunity to speak again.” -- James W. Williams **

Listening is an important part of communication that seems to have gone to the wayside over the years. The author presents well-written helpful chapters addressing many aspects of listening. The author shows easy ways to practice and hone your listening skill.

Seemed like a better book at the start than it did at the end. Felt like the author used very little of his own work and copied & pasted blocks from other sources. There were some good examples on conversations, for me a lot more of these would have been beneficial, or a supporting audio attachment where these could be expanded. Not sure if I would recommend, there's better material on youtube/fireside. If you're quick at reading then its probably worth a quick read.

A good introduction to a lost skill

This is a book that brings to your attention the importance of listening as part of communication. An art that has sadly, fallen by the way. To listen, truly listen, to someone is the greatest gift you can give them. This book introduces the basic concepts and the skills necessary to be a good listener.

Eye Opening For Sure

I always thought I was a good listener. After reading this book, I realize I have a lot of areas where I can improve on. I have already started to implement and practice in the different areas where I am not only weak, but I didn’t know it was relevant.

conventional communication wisdom

We should want more than older studies that are often quoted but were never accurate, conversation analysis from someone who does not regularly analyze dialogue, or methods that are true to a researched model.
