No guy is worth risking my heart until Maddox gets close …
I can’t keep using my daughter as an excuse to stay out of the dating pool, but finding a partner as a single mom is hard. I’d much rather get lost in my work, but I don’t want to be alone forever. Enter Madd. He’s not what I expected: too young, not settled, but he might be just what I need. And when I’m in his arms I’ve never felt more protected.
There’s no privacy among dragons …
I don’t want to seem ungrateful. I love my family, but the Black Claw dragons can be a bit much. So much that I’m thinking of finishing my law degree out of state. And then I meet Bethany and everything changes. She’s my fated mate and I want to make her mine. But am I ready for a woman with a daughter of her own, especially if it means staying in town?
It may not matter if she isn’t ready to mate with a dragon. Bethany has no idea my kind exist, and if she can’t accept both parts of me, she’ll never be my mate. How can I convince her that my dragon’s heart beats only for her?
In this standalone paranormal romance Maddox Kingston has to figure out his place in the world of the Black Claw dragons, and when he meets Bethany, it’s clear that he belongs beside her. He’s determined to claim the single mother as his fated mate and protect her and her daughter from every harm that comes their way.

Okay, let me start by saying I love the series but this one was a little icky for me. First, I read the series in basically a day so just 24 hours ago, Maddox was a 17 year old kid to me & although 5 years had passed in the books, it was odd to have him be a grown man & read about what he did to Bethany. But my issue was with Bethany. I didn't like her. There was nothing in this book that made me change my mind from the beginning to the end that she was just not a good character. I didn't like her from the beginning but after her reaction - nah. She didn't deserve Maddox or Artemis. She also wasn't that good of a friend. If they pointed out she was wrong, she was just as nasty to Abby. Abby took some blame but nah. That was all Bethany & showed what she was really like to me. She was like that with Maddox & her friends. The second someone went against what she thought, she turned on them. Artemis made a bad choice. I didn't like her all that much when they introduced her in the last book & she didn't do anything to change that. She got worse. There have been some continuation issues that I've noticed in some of the books but I thought it was mentioned in the last book that Tiffany's father died in a drunk driving accident but in this book he was just driving reckless. I get it, that opened the story for his parents but it just bothered me. Also, she was dressed in ripped jeans & a shirt with roses on it for a bbq & yet that same night when getting undressed she took off a dress. Did she change at the bbq?! There were a few times the names were mixed up. I noticed in the last book that Abby got to the Manor House & went to see her sister who was there but then they pulled in. How could Harley be there already & then arrive?! I get a mistake but isn't there an editor or someone who reads these to pick that up? I did so other people probably did too. I love this series but this one not so much cause of mostly Bethany & a little thinking it's icky to reading about a guy who was a kid a few books ago doing what he did. Jury was an adult already when introduced. Maddox was not. Maybe I'm too old - IDK. Also, when are Maverick & Ava having a baby?! They both wanted one in the first book & now Maddox is a step dad, Axel, & Stefan are dads, & Hailey is 13.
I’m having a tough time deciding on my rating. I absolutely loved this series, and for the most part, I enjoyed this book. The thing that is holding me back from a 4 star rating is that I hated the main female character, Bethany. Plain and simple, she’s a bitch. I didn’t find her to be independent and strong, which is what I think the author was going for. I honestly found no redeeming qualities in her and I nearly gave up finishing the book on a few occasions. I can’t for the life of me see why Maddox or Artemis would want her as a mate. Personally, I felt that Maddox’s HEA would have been to go to law school in CA and fall madly in love with someone who deserved him. Maybe it wouldn’t have been his fated mate but his own grandfather is deeply in love with his wife and they aren’t fated mates. And find some new territory for him to have his own Kingston dragon nest somewhere else.
The story revolves around alpha dragons who are discovering their fated mates, which have traditionally been human females. However, humans are unaware of the dragons' existence and do not feel a bond with them. Thus, dragons can only reveal themselves if they are certain that the woman is the one their fate intended for them.
As these women learn about the new world around them and what it means to be fated, the narrative becomes rich with tension. Each woman also grapples with her own personal challenges, and the dragons will do anything to keep their mates safe.
Emotions run high as the characters confront their circumstances, navigating conflicting feelings of fear, hope, and longing. The presence of strong alpha males adds another layer of complexity to the story.
Amid these challenges, there is an undercurrent of playful interactions. Overall, the narrative is a captivating blend of love, action, and adventure that keeps readers engaged from beginning to end.
I don’t usually write reviews for books I don’t like, I am making an exception here. I loved the other books in this series but this one is a total let down. Bethany was absolutely horrible and if it had have been a stand alone book I would have stopped reading. I get writing strong women but let’s be clear strong and bitchy are two completely different things. This book has put me off reading any more of this series. Not to mention that facts disclosed in previous books were changed in this book. 🤷🏼 . All in all a disappointing read.
This is the fifth book in the series and usually books get better as the series goes on but not this one. In fact, this book and the last one were disappointing. The MMCs start out as self righteous jerks. This book was even more annoying than the last because the MFCs girlfriends side with him. Honestly, I wanted to scream through that whole bar scene. He deserved so much more hostility from her.
Even the MFC’s mother is awful, constantly bugging her about finding a man, “My mother’s excitement was palpable in the air. She was so eager to marry me off.”
At thirty percent in, somehow the reader is supposed to believe their canned apologies to each other. The conflict feels contrived and the apologies are stilted. In addition, their first two sex scenes are written as if they are both the first time which is just weird.
I think it's the bizarre about face the characters do part way through that is most unbelievable. The main characters, the girlfriends, the mother, they all just suddenly become better people.
And who is the guy on the cover supposed to be? He looks 40 and has a beard, even though we're told, “Nothing made me feel more like a man than having a straight-razor shave”. What a stupid statement anyway.
And this. Why? “We’d both been in such a hurry that the thoughts of condoms hadn’t occurred to either of us”. What? He's a well known man whore and it doesn't occur to either of them to wear a condom?
And the next book is about another young “playboy”. Seriously? As we've seen so far, this one is an even bigger screw up than the last two.
It literally feels like six different people are writing this book and no one is talking to each other.
This one had me feeling some mixed emotions. It was so great to read about Maddox as a man and not the teen he was 5 years ago in book 1, however, Bethany really had me disappointed. At first, I loved her, she was a strong confident single mom, but after the way she handled Madds secret, totally ripping his and Artemis’s heart out I was stunned. It was so poorly handled. It could have been written is so many other ways. She went from from being a great character to a total bitch with no redeeming qualities. Then, to top it off, she thinks Maddox should reconcile with her after the kidding napping, are you effin kidding me!? I was chocked.
Madd literally saves Tiffany’s life and he get a hug and a cold should. Shame. Beth doesn’t even acknowledge his saying “I’ll get out girl back” it was totally blown over.
Overall I liked the story. I just wish Bethany wasn’t such a horrid character. I also died inside when she called the entire Kingston Clan freaks. That was upsetting to read. In the previous books we really got to follow along the journey of the mates once they found out but we don’t in this book. Like I said, this book has me feeling mixed emotions.
While this wasn’t the best book in the series, it wasn’t the worst. So I feel 3 stars is fair.

Unfortunately, this story was ruined. I can't recommend it. Maddox was a phenomenal hero. Bethany was an extreme disappointment. I read a lot and I have to be truthful in that she is the worst female character I have ever seen. What Maddox went through with her was so very, very, very sad. Not only did he and his dragon, Artemis, suffer, but so did his family because of Bethany! This is the second heroine I have hated in my lifetime. I was really hoping Maddox would meet someone else who deserved him and hoping beyond hope that in this story the dragon got his fated mate wrong. The only reason I was able to give this even two stars was because of Maddox. His character was really good, but I could not rate it any higher. The author, sadly, did this story a disservice. I have read all of the stories so far in this series and this one started out being even better than the previous stories... but then, the author ruined it. I am always a sincere reviewer of all the books I read. It saddens me to have to rate this story this way, but I will always be sincere.
like the series but not the main female character in this book.
I really couldn’t get behind and sometimes stand Bethany. She just made me angry. Way to ready to blow things out of proportion and blow up. There is a difference between telling someone what to do and making a suggestion. Saying “Change your number.” Is different than saying “You could change your number.” She needed to make some really apologies and not just ignore and then half a$$ it. Thinking you can treat someone badly and then pretend like it didn’t happen, is wrong. Just because someone is nice or helps you after you treat them badly/hurt them does not mean you don’t need to apologize.
I liked Maddox but did not like Bethany’s character at all. She was a total b**ch towards Maddox from the start and always misinterprets his concern for her as condescending when in fact, it’s the other way around. Bethany thinks she’s always right and does not like it when others point out her faults. I had to skip the chapter and just read the end because Bethany’s behaviour was getting on my nerves. This could have been a great book like the rest of the series and Maddox could have been paired up with someone else better.
Bethany is one of my top 5 most disliked or hated heroines. I sure wish Maddox’s dragon had remembered he’s got balls and made her grovel and beg him to take her back. I can understand a woman being able to take care of herself and not needing to rely on a man and yada, yada, yada, but she didn’t have to be such a bitch about it. Jeez. Her reaction to learning about his dragon is also a direct result of her being a flat out bitch.
Roxie Rays writing was once again great. Another look into Black Claws best. However the female lead was not what I hoped her to be. Instead of coming off as a strong independent single mom she mostly came off as rude. With how poorly she treated Maddox throughout the book I expected a bigger apology from Beth. One that was more genuine and in its wording didn’t put the blame back on Maddox for her poor responses.
I was so excited for this book! It was a difficult read because I didn't connect with the female. She seemed emotionally fragile and overly defensive and mean. She was not what I had envisioned for Maddox and I honestly felt disappointed. He won me over in the initial book and I had wanted him to find the perfect mate. Unfortunately, Bethany was not it for me.
I was looking forward to this story as Maddox and Jury are my two favourite Kingston’s and I’d enjoyed Jury’s story in the previous book but I couldn’t enjoy this at all because of Bethany. What a self-centred, nasty person she was. Given that she was the main female in this book it completely ruined it.
Poor Maddox my heart broke so much for him I cried.
First if the author reads this the guy on the cover is no way 22. He looks 50 with the grey hair. Okay rant over! Bethany has had a rough life. Her childhood friend & her got drunk & they made a baby. They were both excited about sharing the responsibility of raising a child together. However, they had totally different ideas on how to do it. He wanted to marry her. They argued & he sped away & was killed in a car crash. Three years later Bethany inherited some land from her grandmother. There were houses on it but they needed fixing up. And no one took her seriously because she was a woman. Tiffany is her adorable daughter who splits her time between moms job & grandma & grandpa. Bethany met Abby in the last book so they become fast friends. Maddox doesn't know what to do. He didn't expect to get a fated mate with a child. Sure he eventually wanted kids but he was about to go to law school. He was so tired of his family not giving him any privacy he felt suffocated at times. When he meets Bethany it goes badly. He just doesn't know when to keep him mouth shut. He keeps digging his grave deeper & deeper each time he meets her. Word got back to the men of the family & he was lucky no one told his mom. He also applied to a college in California. When his relationship with Bethany finally gets to the right spot he prepares to tell her. Unfortunately, it explodes in his face. Tiffany accidentally gets scratched by Artemis & Bethany immediately decides he's dangerous. She goes to the extreme of thinking she might eat them. She reduces Maddox to tears. And Hailey loved playing with Tiffany. And Tiffany wanted to play with the dinosaur as she called Artemis. The way she would reach her little arms up to Maddox to have him hold her. The sweetest was that she called him Maddoth. Maddox is devastated. It is the first rejection any of the family has heard. All it does is make Maddox's choice of school easier. After telling his family it takes his mom a few minutes to come around. Tiffany gets kidnapped by her Dad's parents. And they had nothing to do with Tiffany after seeing her after her birth. The grandfather is controlling & he would call weekly drunk & tell Bethany that it was her fault his son was dead. Maddox rushes over to help Bethany when he hears. They use dragon senses to help locate Tiffany. When they find her his wife has taken away his keys. They are both taken to the station. Bethany is so afraid she stays at her parents for two weeks. She is afraid to be alone in the house. Finally her parents kick her out of the house to socialize. She has felt worse & worse about how she treated Maddox. Especially, after he saved her daughter. She gave him a hug & then took her daughter from him. When she goes to apologize he is at a party the family is throwing for him. She gives him a long apology. Then Artemis is ready to claim her. They talk about their future. And next up it's Rico's turn.
This is the worst of the series so far and the reason for that is Bethany. Couldn't stand her!
Maddox (who was 17 in the first book) is thinking of leaving to go to law school. He feels a little trapped and claustrophobic. His whole family know is business, they just walk in and out of his house and he never has any privacy.
Bethany is a single mum. She had a one night stand with her best friend and when she got pregnant he demanded they get married but she said no so he got mad and got in a car accident and died. Bethany is awful from the start. She just a mean bitch.
They go on a date and have a good time but I honestly wondered why Artemis picked her. We know Maddox is 22 but it never mentions how old she is. She has a 3 year old and her own business so I figured she was older than him but it never says.
They start having sex and considering he was a total manwhore but he found his mate they don't discuss if either of them are clean or using a condom until after the first time
The parents of her kids dad are trying to get custody of her and are been aggressive and kind of creepy and it was obvious where this was going.
He decides its time to show her his dragon and it does not go well. In fact its a disaster. I didn't like her reaction. Its ok to be freaked out. Its ok to be scared but to call them all freaks and run away the way she did was uncalled for.
Then obviously the grandparents kidnap the kid (cant remember her name) She is kinda rude to him when he shows up and he says I'm a cop I answered the call. He says 'I will find our girl' and she ignores it. He gets his family and they go looking for her. He finds her and she is fine just a little upset. Bethany get there and she does nothing. She just mouths thank you.
By this point Maddox says he's going to California. He cant be there and not be with her. Honestly I don't know why he likes her. She hasn't spoken to him for week. He saved your daughter and you can even say a proper thank you. I was so over her by this point and was hoping he would leave
She find out he is leaving and goes running to his place to finally apologise. Maddox forgave her way too fast. He should have gone and left her. Seen how she liked it.
Maddox and her daughter saved this book but she was the worst
Roxie Ray has written a number of dragon shifter romance stories centered around the fictional town of Black Claw, Colorado. Her Dragon Destiny tells the story of Bethany, a single mom with a three-year-old daughter, and Maddox Kingston, a dragon shifter from a family of dragon shifters. If you’ve ever read any of Ms. Ray’s other dragon shifter stories, you’ll be familiar with them, but this is a stand-alone romance and it’s not necessary that you read them to enjoy this story.
Maddox has been accepted into two law schools; one is a school several towns over from Black Claw and the other one is in California. He’s feeling like he has no privacy in Black Claw and that his entire family knows his business. Prior to meeting Bethany, his fated mate, he was seriously considering accepting the offer from California. However, now that he’s met Bethany, he has to consider that the California school would put him far away from her and he’s not sure he wants to do that. But Bethany has a child and he’s also not sure he’s ready to be a father yet.
Maddox and Bethany get off to a rough start and he keeps saying the wrong thing to her and she takes exception to his words. Will they ever get together? And if so, how will Bethany react when he tells her that he’s not ready for kids yet? And what will happen the first time he meets Tiffany, Bethany’s daughter?
Ms. Ray once again knocks the ball out of the park with this delightful story!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I’ve read them all. They’re cute. Nothing over the top or too in depth. I’ve enjoyed the Kingston family of dragons. They’re easy reads. I get a kick out of how the next story’s characters are introduced at the end of each prior book.
That said I just have to express my one HUGE complaint - The cover art. From book 4 on it is getting steadily worse. I get that an author has an idea in their head of what a fictional character looks like, and that will likely differ from the reader’s, but this one misses the mark badly, mainly because it doesn’t fit with the author’s own descriptions and story.
Rant - They started going horribly awry with Jury’s story in book 4. An early 20s man/dragon. According to the author they have very youthful looks because they live so long. So much so that they have to move every 40-ish years to keep the locals from figuring out they’re supernatural creatures, since they don’t age normally. So this barely 20-something young man, who is at one time described by Abby as having blonde hair, shows up on the cover as a 30-something dark-haired mountain man. Okay.
Then this next book just takes that travesty and doubles down. Maddox. The baby of the dragons. The son of Mav. Cousin to Jury. 22-years-old. According to the cover, though, Maddox is an early 40s Viking/biker dude.
Suggestion for the author - Hire a different graphic artist who has actually read your books. They’re entertaining, but your covers are becoming really off putting.
Maddox is all grown up and has met his fated mate - Highly recommend!
Written for mature readers only (18+ years old) due to subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language, steamy intimate scenes and violence.
This story is part of the Black Claw series. While this could be read as a stand-alone, I highly recommend it be read in series order for maximum reader satisfaction and to prevent spoilers as there are reoccurring characters and an overall storyline arcs.
I continue to love this PNR series! They are all well-written with interesting characters and a town that I wish was real so I could move there. I am looking forward to the next story, so much so, that I had to go back and read the last few stories again. That is when I realized that I hadn’t written any reviews ...
The focus for this story is Maddox / Artemis and Bethany. Maddox is all grown up and getting ready to start law school. He has actually been accepted into one a couple of towns over and a more exclusive one in California. He loves the idea of going out to California so he would have more privacy. It seems everyone knows his business before he does!
The problem is Maddox has met his fated mate, Bethany, and he is not sure if he should approach her or not. Bethany has a three-year old girl, Tiffany, and he isn’t sure he is ready to be a step- whatever either. Then she accepts and goes on a date with another man ... oh boy ...
Well aren't we off to a "wonderful " start. Bethany's best friend Ricky is now Kyle. "Ricky" was killed by a drunk driver. Hit and run. Kyle was killed speeding and went off a cliff lol when he was Ricky, the two decided to just stay friends and co parent their daughter. But as Kyle, he proposed and they fought about it until he died. When his parents threatened to sue for custody, the first thing Bethany should have done was to remind them of Walter's weekly DRUNKEN phone calls in the middle of the day. I get these authors always love drama but at least make it believable drama. They don't get to ignore a child for three years and then think they have any rights but the worst is when heroines don't speak up. She has proof of neglect and should say so.
There is no way Maddox is 22. Hailey was only three years older than the first book the oldest Maddox could be is almost 21. So now Hailey is 13. Bethany's date with Harry must have lasted 2 years but the time warp didn't age Tiffany.
“I’m sure Tiffany would love to meet your sister.” she did. Hailey helped babysit during the two year date
Maddox tells us he does most his shifting and flying on a trail not being used. Then later tells us he only flies on family land.
GAWD I'm so done lol once this series is over I'm done. They do seem to get a little better at writing since I read Secret Shifters Next Door before this series. But not enough.
With each new book in this series, I find myself falling more in love with this amazing Kingston family. I’m fully immersed in their journey of discovering their fated mates and enjoy the balance of romance, action and suspense. The author creates just an overall genuine, down-to-earth feel to this charming world of dragon shifters. Maddox and Bethany’s story is no exception. As with every couple, they’ve had to overcome a rocky start, but Maddox and Bethany get over that hurdle quickly as Maddox spends more time with Bethany and her daughter. Bethany’s past threatens to bring complications to her life and Maddox is just the support she needs, until it’s time to reveal Artemis…and well, if you’ve read the series thus far… you know how that can go! I liked that Bethany had armor that Maddox had to work hard to peel away. It showed her devotion to being a good, protective mom. The relationship with Maddox and Tiffany was adorable too.
Listened on audio: Roxie Ray has quite the knack for picking the perfect narrator for each installment. Phoenix McKay shined again with this one! She really captured the personalities and emotions of the characters and her range with male and child voices really made this a pleasurable listening experience.
Sometimes it's best to get out of your own head. Kyle was Bethany's best friend. He helped her start a business flipping houses with the inheritence from her grandparents. They had a drunken night and Tiffiny was conceived. Beth wanted to stay friends, Kyle wanted to get married. He stormed out after a fight and got into a car accident. Maddox was a part time cop inyrnfinh to attend law school. He got an acceptance from a local college and one in CA. He wanted to leave the nosy family and friends who were always in his business. He was leaning toward CA. Then he met Bethany, his mate. First impressions, they didn't like each other. His decision to leave got easier. Then they went on a date and enjoyed it. Does their relationship continue friendly? Is Maddox's choice to leave easier or harder? Does Tiffiny like Maddox? Will Beth move to CA? Nice story. The characters are likeable and strong. Nicely done. I received an ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This story is about Maddox and Bethany, a single mom working to make a good life for her daughter. Things between them don't start out well, but end up starting to change for the better. There are other issues that come up, but I don't want to say too much. The chemistry between them is great and I enjoyed it. The one thing I didn't like was the inconsistencies that were in the book. The last book in this series had Maddox's eleven year old sister meeting Bethany's three year old daughter, and in this book had them meeting for the first time again, but Marx's sister is now thirteen, but Bethany's daughter is still three. Lime the last book, I think it could have gone through another round or two with an editor. I'm going to finish the series because I'm invested in it, and I like the storylines. I can only hope that the next one doesn't have as many inconsistencies as the last few books have.
This book is creepy. It's about an older woman, Bethany (with a 3 year old child), who is in a relationship with a boy, Maddox, in high school whose biggest concern is which college he’ll be attending as a pre-Law student. The relationship between these two characters alone is untenable. And as I said, creepy. He's immature, and he should be: he's a teenager. If that isn't enough, and actually it is, the book is badly written using terrible grammar in awkward sentences. The writer keeps pushing these characters to do things that actually seem out of character for each of them. I do not care for any of them in this book. I have read one of the other books in the series, did not care for the writing, but liked the story. I thought I would try this one. I will not be trying any others. I have read other Roxie Ray books and have enjoyed her writing; this one is not at her usual level of competence. Perhaps it needs a good, deep edit. And proofreading the grammatical errors and typos would be a gigantic step forward. Gotta pass on any other books in this series.
I loved Bethany’s and Maddox’s story. Bethany is a single mum she flips houses out for a living, her first and only date since her daughter was born was a disaster Bethany was sitting with her date in a restaurant when Maddox Kingston came in and scared her date away and Bethany hadn’t heard from him since. Maddox is a dragon shifter he deliberately went into the restaurant to scare Bethany’s date away she is his mate but he doesn’t know if he’s ready to claim Bethany he doesn’t even know wether he is going to stay in Black Claw. Maddox is only 22 he believes that he has a lot of growing up to do plus he has school in California to think about his life is a mess right now but can Maddox stay away from Bethany?. That’s all I’m going to give you guys there is so much more going on, fantastic story I loved it and I definitely recommend this book.
I wanted to try out a new author in the paranormal romances that I like so I chose this one by Roxie Ray in Booksprout. I enjoyed reading the story about Bethany, a single mom with a three-year-old daughter: Tiffany, who flips homes and owns rentals, and Maddox, dragon shifter/lawyer, who was considering moving to California and leaving Black Claw. Maddox knows Bethany is his mate but when he comes anywhere near her, he puts his foot in his mouth, can he win her heart? I liked that the dragon in Maddox has a name and personality which was different than I'm usually read, and the romance chemistry and worldbuilding was detailed so I wasn't lost since this is the fifth book in the series. Overall this was a very enjoyable paranormal romance I volunteer to read and review via Booksprout and will definitely check out the others in this series. ARC

Her Dragon Destiny Black Claw Dragons: Book 5 By Roxie Ray Kindle unlimited purchase Maddox is the son of the alpha of Kingston clan. He grew up not knowing his father now he can't think of what his life would be without him (and the rest of the clan) in it. Bethany had one drunken night with her best friend and got the most beautiful thing out of it her daughter. Now he is dead and she is raising her on her own. Bethany is a very strong woman and just the person for Maddox. From book 1 I was hoping that Maddox got his own book and here it is and what a book it is. Again I recommend reading this series in order to get a better idea of the series. Her Dragon Daddy Her Dragon Protector Her Dragon Lover Her Dragon Hero Her Dragon Destiny Her Dragon Rebel

Maddox may be young but he knows his way around the bedroom and pleasing his mate is his duty and pleasure.
Wow, Maddox and Bethany's story really brought the feels in me and I loved their HEA!
Oh man I can't believe everything going on in Maddox's head about wanting to be independent from his loving family who always want the best for him. And when he found his true mate in a single mother I was so happy for him because of his fathers love story with his mom and how he accepted Hailey into his life as a real daughter and not just a step daughter. And when he accepted Tiffany the same way wow it was swoon worthy, although when Bethany rejected Maddox and his dragon Artemis it made !e cry for them because they just wanted to get her approval and live HEA. And didn't quite go the way they expected it to but I'm so happy Bethany was able to come around and reunite with bethany so they could become a true family. Now I can't wait to read Rico's story
