This is book #4 in the Southern Jersey Shores series and should be read after Ultimate Summer. All the stories in this series are best read in sequen
Always an avid reader and colorful dreamer, it was only a matter of time before taking pen to paper, oftentimes literally. A firm believer in every song tells a story and every story has a song, I sing under my breath, tap my toes and swing my hips, much to the delight of my co-workers and friends. I freely admit that becoming a romance author is the best mid-life crisis a girl could ever have.
Southern Jersey Shores is a great series of short stories from Alexis Woods, the common themes running through them being the setting, of course (the clue's in the series name), and that they're MM romances.
What I love about a series like this is that each story focuses on different main characters, whilst also featuring cameo appearances by the characters from the other stories - there's something rather fun about recognising the characters behaving in familiar ways and pausing to think 'yep, that sounds like something Dare would do'.
What's also great is the subtle, everyday almost-snarky humour that lightens some fairly intense moments, and there are plenty of those throughout the series, perhaps more so in Ultimate Summer (SJS #3) than any of the other stories.
Spin Play is the story of Ben, a college professor who is single and comes across as being quite serious and responsible. His best friends, on the other hand, are not, and make what can only be described as irresponsible mistakes, always with the best of intentions. Ben is, without a doubt, the grown-up in this story, and in some ways is wise beyond his years.
What follows, therefore, is quite an interesting juxtaposition as the rather sedate Ben and 'startlingly flexible' Sawyer engage in a sexy courtship that had the Blondie song 'One Way or Another' stuck in my head the entire time I was editing.
As with the previous Southern Jersey Shores stories, Spin Play is a short story, complete in its own right and entirely stand-alone, but readers of the series will enjoy catching glimpses of characters from the previous stories.
This short story (88 pages on iPad) is part of the Jersey Shores series but works as a stand alone. I haven’t read any of the previous stories and didn’t feel anything was missing. This one revolves around Ben, a college professor who is celebrating a birthday with friends when suddenly things take a turn. First off I have to say I just loved Ben’s friend, Jack. Everyone should have a Jack. Ben has admitted to Jack that he’s tired of being a one-nighter and he’s ready to settle. Both Jack and his love, Melody, are skeptical. “You’ve never had a boyfriend, barely spent more than one night with a guy.” But Ben’s thirty-four and he’s thinking of changing. Of course, first we have to celebrate the birthday, where he gets an eyeful of the gorgeous stripper, Sawyer. Lust at first sight, here we come. Sawyer shows his talents during the dance and Ben is smitten. Things are a little bit more than they seem and Jack has a hand in wanting Ben’s dream man wish to come true. I wonder how Ben will handle his man still stripping for others, as I could see that being a problem. When he asks if Sawyer often gives lap dances, “Why: Does that bother you? Not that it matters, it’s part of the job.” It’s early days yet, so hopefully they will get it to work. There are some cute parts, such as when Ben gets to be a hero in the coffee shop. Mostly, it’s a short, cute story with a HFN.
After reading this book, I can safely say, though I love all the men in this series, Ben is my fave! I love sweet and sassy Ben who is tired of one-nighters and failed attempts at finding the one, and wants a stable relationship, and he wants it yesterday! Well on his birthday he may find the one he can't do without in a way he never expected!
Sawyer is a wonderful guy too, and he may already know who Ben is when he sees him on his Birthday! Can these two guys throw caution to the wind and try to find love? They have the whole chemistry and attraction thing down, but do these two have what it takes to make it long term?
You will adore this book! I read it twice already, and Ben made me giggle both times! Grab Spin Play now, it is a great addition to Southern Jersey Shores! Thanks Alexis, for a book 4 that became my fave!
A few notes about the Southern Jersey Shores Series:
All of these are short stories with HFN endings, with the potential for more. There's attraction and acting on that attraction. Each story takes place over only a few days time.
Each book also revolves around a theme: Book 1 - Opening Day - baseball Book 2 - Evading Exodus - Passover Book 3 - Ultimate Summer - Ultimate Frisbee Book 4 - Spin Play - games Book 5 - Cue the Music - music Book 6 - Say You Will - surprises
I liked Spin Play by Alexis Woods. It's the fourth book in the Southern Jersey Shore series. I liked Sawyer and Ben, but I would have preferred that this story was a little bit longer. It felt a little bit unfinished with more of a happy-for-now ending.

Ben was a college professor who has played the field for a long time. He is finally deciding that he may be ready to settle down and stop with the one night stands. Sawyer is a recent grad school graduate who has had the hots for Ben. He finally gets the nerve to approach Ben with the help of Ben's awesome BFF Jack. Ben is funny, snarky, and at times a bit over the top. It was great to see him decide he was ready to settle down and find the hot Sawyer as a great partner.
While I didn't love this as much as I remember loving the first two books, I still really enjoyed this book. Ms. Woods remains very clever with her use of the sports/games woven into the books and I absolutely love that. It adds a level of fun to the books. This was short like the others and could use a bit more story to convince me of the possibility of an HEA, but we have a very solid HFN. I hope there are more books in the future and we can get a glimpse of Ben and Sawyer again, just like we did briefly of Ace and Dare.
It was a great quick read! I am completely jealous of Sawyers dancing and would beg him to give me lessons. Things were drawn out a smidge in certain areas, but not enough to take away from the story in my opinion. I think that they will be a great couple. The way that they began is definitely hot and hilarious and I lived for it!

Ok. I've really struggled to review this book because I generally don't like to give anything below a 4 star - 3 star if it has rampant editing errors - but I just can't find it in myself to give this more than a generous 2.5 stars. I've liked other works by this author but, holy cow, this is in a totally different league.
First of all, I get that this was written with a friend in mind - according to the forward - and is intended to be over the top and cheesy. But seriously! For all that I wanted to, I could not find anything I liked about the main character, Ben. He's pretty much an arrogant manwhore - and that's being generous. I found nothing likeable about him and that made it really difficult to objectively view the rest of the story. Sawyer, his younger crush, is much more eminently likeable. He wavers between being full of sass and confidence, to being a little more vulnerable, and I could relate to his character more closely. Ben's friends come across as shallow and vapid and they did nothing to endear me to their contributions to the plot. In fact, I actually found there to be very little real plot - manwhore professor decides he might want to settle down in his first real relationship; along comes recent young graduate that's been pining for said professor; a birthday striptease followed by a chance coffee shop meeting and then ... Wham! Back at professor's place where they do the horizontal mambo in a flurry of cheesy "game" innuendos! That's pretty much it! No talk of feelings or futures - all you get is Ben ruminating internally that this could be the one, while the jizz is still drying on their bodies! Grant it, some of the game references were pretty clever but mostly it was like standing in the game aisle at Walmart and seeing just how many titles we can shove into a 58 page novella. Way ... WAY ... overdone!
In short, I can say that the editing was great, grammer and punctuation fine but everything else that makes a book/story memorable, or even just entertaining, was completely absent. I have never said this, to date, but I found it a complete waste of my reading time. I'd totally recommend that you judge for yourself, as there are undoubtedly readers out there that will enjoy such things, but I can't actually recommend it as something you "should" read. Be prepared to never look at another game aisle the same. I'm not sure I will ever hear the name of the game "Chutes and Ladders" and not picture a cheesy sex scene! And if that's what the author was going for ... Well done!
I read the first two stories in this series which made me curious to see what this one was about. It had the same instalove feel of the first two stories. Ben -professor and former man about town and Sawyer, stripper and recent graduate student. Sawyer has a crush on Ben and so it is arranged that he be the stripper at Ben’s b-day party. Sparks fly, but Ben is reluctant to pursue it even after his best friend let’s him know Sawyer likes him. Cue a coincidental meeting which puts them in a place to admit their feelings to each other.
This is a super quick read with an uncomplicated plot. Enjoy this guilty pleasure read.

My least favorite of the series so far, but still a fun and quick story worth reading. The writing is nice and straightforward, which makes the reading flow at a good pace. I also love that we see some of the other characters from the previous books, and his friend Jack was the best character in this story!
I didn't like Ben at all, his behavior felt "wrong" for a professor at his age. He was a good guy and I liked that he was responsible enough to help his friends when they decided to drink more than they should. But still, playing around as he did and even his behavior with Sawyer didn't sit right with me. He seemed more like a student and Sawyer looked a lot more mature than him.
Enjoyed this short While Ben was enjoying his birthday he mentioned to his friend he was ready for a full time partner not just a one night stand. Unbeknown to him Jack had arranged a police stripper for his birthday . Sawyer arranged with Jack to be a stripper for Ben's birthday, but Sawyer had another motive. Sawyer has been crushing over Ben for months. Weary of the age gap They were perfect for each other. Both wanting full time . This was a good follow on in the series I received an arc of this book for a honest review and I thoroughly enjoyed Can be read as a stand-alone
After playing the field for so long, Ben is finally ready to settle down with one person in his life. He wants a deeper relationship and is thinking about the future for himself and a permanent partner.
His friend, Jack, arranges for a stripper for Ben’s birthday, and Sawyer was happy to comply since he had noticed Ben and had a crush on him, despite their age gap. With Sawyer’s moves, he definitely caught Ben’s interest this time. Would Ben finally take notice? Would they get their chance to be together? Is Sawyer “the One” Ben has been looking for?
This was great!! Ben is a college professor, kind of stoic, (I think) but sassy. He acts more grown up that his friends. Sawyer is fun! Together they are fantastic! This kind of ends with a HFN but it was a fun short read, really enjoyed it!

I really have enjoyed reading this series even if they are each short stories.
Ben in my opinion has decided that it is past time for him to quit playing around. He is jealous of all the couples around him and wants what they all have. Someone to love, spend his time with, tell his deepest desires and secrets too, and someone he can come home to each night. I think he is beginning to believe it will never happen to him but little does he know that is all about to change. Sawyer walks into his life and turns it upside down.
The immediate attraction these two men feel for one anther is off the charts. And the crazy thing is Sawyer has been close by for a while now admiring from afar.
I love how Alexis Woods makes these short stories into a huge romance for her characters. Alexis is a very talented author. I hope there will be more books in this series in the future.
