From USA Today bestselling authors Gin Jones and Elizabeth Ashby comes a brand new mystery...
It's Independence Day weekend, and Maria Dolores, the descendant of Danger Cove's first lighthouse keeper, is the new manager of the Lighthouse Farmers' Market. While she may be a bit uncertain about her career change—trading financial planning for flower stalls and farm fresh produce—she's still determined to get the market into shape and onto one of the region's "best of" lists.
From the very beginning, though, events conspire against her. Her mentor and attractive local farmer, Merle Curtis, fails to show up to introduce her to the vendors, the stalls are all in the wrong place, and an earthquake shakes up everyone in the market! In its aftermath, Maria realizes the flower vendor is more than shaken up... she's dead. Maria suddenly finds herself embroiled in a small town mystery that's got everyone on edge. Will it all lead to the end of Maria's new career? Or worse yet... her life?

About Danger Cove: Danger Cove is a sleepy little town in the Pacific Northwest and home to renowned mystery novelist, Elizabeth Ashby. While Elizabeth swears the stories she writes are fiction, you can find the inspiration for her murderous tales all over Danger Cove...from the intriguing cast of local characters to the places to eat, play, and explore in Danger Cove. Don't let our name fool you—we're the friendliest (even if deadliest) town in the Pacific Northwest! Visit us at dangercovemysteries.com
Gin is a retired lawyer who specialized in ghost-writing for other lawyers. She prefers to write her own books, though, since she doesn't have to worry that her sense of humor might get her thrown into jail for contempt of court. In her spare time, Gin makes quilts, grows garlic, and advocates for patients with rare disorders.
The newly hired head of the Danger Cove Lighthouse Farmer's Market has her hands full. There are squabbling vendors, rude vendors, ear-splitting feedback from the stage for the music acts and then there is the dead body of one of the vendors... Gin Jones who also writes the Danger Cove quilting mysteries is back with a newish character. The MC was introduced in the Danger Cove story in the Killer Beach Reads anthology. Another enjoyable visit to Danger Cove.
Welcome to Danger Cove, a small town in the Pacific Northwest. Meet Maria Dolores, a descendant of the town's first lighthouse keeper, the original Maria Dolores. Maria has just started her new job as the manager of the Lighthouse Farmers' Market after closing her financial planning business and leaving big city life behind. The Independence Day weekend market should be the one of the summer's busiest times but it isn't getting off to a good start. Quarreling vendors, stalls out of line, vendors with poor public relations skills, a sound stage with a microphone feedback problem and a strong earthquake make for a bad day but it only gets worse, as Maria searches for a missing vendor, only to discover her lifeless body behind the band stage. Luckily the police don't have to shut down the market but that isn't helping Maria's pending migraine. The second day of the holiday weekend brings hordes of visitors, several suspects and the discovery of a second body. Maria is really questioning her career change but is determined to solve the two murders and get the market back on track and ready to be added to the area's "best of" list.
I really enjoyed this book and meeting these new characters in this delightful town. This is Book 14 in the Danger Cove Mysteries series which has different settings, lead characters and co-authors for each book. There was a good background to the book so I wasn't lost in following the characters or setting. The murders were well plotted with lots of twists and turns that made the murderer a complete surprise. The characters were well drawn and interesting but with lots of room for future developing. This is a series that I intend to read more of and recommend it for its unique premise and charm.
I voluntarily read an Advance Reader Copy of this book. This is my honest opinion & fair review
Who killed Veronica and Russell and why??? Two deaths and an earthquake and dealing with the venders tend to disrupt the weekend at The Lighthouse Farmers’ Market as Maria Dolores knows!!! I enjoyed this story and recommend the book.
“The Death in the Flower Garden” earns 5/5 Locally Sourced Market Treats!
Maria Dolores, named for her great-great-great grandmother and the town’s first lighthouse keeper, has come to Danger Cove to be the manager of the Lighthouse Farmers’ Market. Six weeks ago the manager had been killed on opening day, and after conversations with the acting manager and owner of Pear Stripes Orchard Merle Curtis, she decided to leave her job as a financial planner and move to the small coastal town. Her first day on the job, for the Fourth of July weekend, is not free of stress with the Baxter twins setting up the booths incorrectly, Merle Curtis late, very late for a final briefing and transfer of manager duties, a vendor argument in the parking lot, accusations of products not locally sourced, an earthquake, and a dead body…maybe Maria should have taken her mother’s advice and stayed in Seattle.
I am a new visitor to Danger Cove, and eager to stay for a long time. Joining Danger Cove resident Elizabeth Ashby (What a delightful idea for a writing team!), Gin Jones pens another perfect view of the community. Although she took us on three journeys with Danger Cove Quilting and introduced the Farmers’ Market in the short story, “A Killing in the Market,” in the Killer Beach Reads collection, this is the first full length visit into the Danger Cove Farmers’ Market; two more visits are set for releases in August, “A Saying in the Orchard,” and October, “A Secret in the Pumpkin Patch.” Check out the Danger Cove official website at http://www.gemmahalliday.com/Danger_C...
I have started looking suspiciously at those at my local farmers’ market. Heirloom vegetables? Handmade crafts? Locally grown produce? Who knew a farmers’ market could be so dangerous and deadly? The story is very engaging with several motives revealed, and although alibis tend to be a stumbling block for a quick arrest, it makes for an entertaining twisty-turny story. I found Gin’s characters, my favorite Maria, well developed even this early in the series; Maria very clever and admirable, and her relationship with Cary, who exhibits behaviors on the ‘autism spectrum,’ was treated with realism and respect. The setting of the fictitious Danger Cove, delightfully present in all of the Danger Cove books, and details surrounding the ‘ins and outs’ of managing a farmers’ market along with the market itself play out in the background. I highly recommend this book, and if you’re able to get a copy of the short story, it is a very helpful introduction.
When the great-great-great-granddaughter of the original Danger Cove Lighthouse Keeper comes to Danger Cove, she comes with trepidation. Her mother never said anything favorable about the town, and Maria doesn't know what to think. She has been hired to run the community fresh market on the lighthouse grounds, and has recently quit her job of financial planner. Although she studied and learned about what market managers do, nothing could prepare her for what actually happens the 4th of July market. From a cart crashing into a van and causing the van owner to get hysterical because of a scratch the day is up and running for Maria. It seems there are a few vendors who don't want to be there by the reactions they have to their customers or lack of them. And top it off with nearly constant feedback from the stage that threatens Maria to have a full blown migraine. When a vendor goes missing it is almost more than she can bear.
I like the concept of an open air market in the small town of Danger Cove. I appreciate Maria's dedication and determination dealing with the vendors and all the petty and not so petty problems that arise.I think the mystery presented is done well and I certainly thought it was not an obvious solution. However I felt like Maria was constantly running around and never actually getting down to the work she said she was going to do. It was almost a detraction from the actual mystery and attempts to figure out who was a killer.
I also like the way new characters are included in the town yet familiar ones from other books are mentioned. It was a good addition to the series, just not my favorite.
This was a fun mystery. I have listened to a few books in the danger cove series, which are written by a number of different authors and it was fun, with a number of the characters and even an author having a cameo roll in this book. I liked the characters, especially the special needs boy Gary. The mystery was interesting and there was a number of suspects to keeps you guessing. This isn't the best book in the series and I think In some ways it would have done better with a different narrator but it certainly won't put me off listening to others in the series. Maria has given up her high powered job for something a lot more simple, the position of running the lighthouse farmers market. Where she thought the hardest part of her job was making sure the vegetables was all locally grown or reuniting lost children with there parents. This doesn't prove to be the case when her friend fails to show.up and introduce her to all the vendors, her assistance has smelt down and refuses to get up off the floor, two of the vendor's try chasing or scaring customers away and an earthquake hit. But all that pales in comparison when the build of another vendor is found underneath the sound equipment. Did Maria do the right thing returning to her grandmother's home town? Or was her mother right? Maria starts to investigate because her new assistant found the body and she fears the police won't look any further than him. It seems to he dead lady had a checked past and wasn't who everybody thought she was, so could her past have finally caught with her? I have heard this narrator before playing the part of a much older character where she did well but not sure how old this character was meant to be but for some reason she sounded to old for the part. Also the voices sounded a bit monotonous and you could miss chunks of the story if your mind wandered.
Danger Cove is aptly named as much as Cabot Cove is for Jessica Fletcher. Even though this is the 14th book in the series, it is the first one in the Farmer’s Market part of the series. So we are introduced to Maria Dolores as she takes over as manager of the farmers’ market in Danger Cove. And it’s the weekend of the 4th of July, so there is a lot going on—including murder x 2!
I love Maria Dolores and how she deals with Cary, who seems to be autistic (it’s never said, but the descriptions of his issues show that he is). And the curmudgeon woodworker. And the earthquake. And so many other things. I’m surprised her migraine wasn’t any worse than it was! But she deals with everything, including the potato farmer who hates her (he wanted the job) and just wants to cause problems for her.
I loved how the author put her own name in as the author doing a signing at the bookseller’s tent! That was a hoot. The mystery itself is well-done with clues placed here and there and lots of suspects. And a satisfying ending as she and Merle, the previous manager, get to finally enjoy some alone time together.
Maria is the new manager of the Lighthouse Farmers’ Market. But things aren’t going the way she planned… Who knew running a market would be so eventful? A murder being one of those events… In her capacity of market manager people talk to her and she can’t help but ask questions about the murder. And she just happens to see and hear things.
I recommend reading the short story ‘A Killing in the Market’ (in ‘Killer Beach Reads’) first. I hadn’t and felt like I had missed something.
The beginning of the book is bordering on being boring. A lot of facts, financial facts, business facts. I know there has to be SOME explanation in order to build a story, but it was a bit on the dry and slow side. But once things got going and the suspense kicked in, it became a real page-turner. The case was well developed, surprising and with a good ‘why’ at the end. There’s also a bit of romance, a budding relationship with one of the vendors. I really liked it!
Death in the Flower Garden is the next installment of the Danger Cove series. This is the first in the Danger Cove Farmers’ Market series. Like all the previous books in this series they can be read independently of the others. Maria a former financial planner and descendent of the first lighthouse keeper runs into trouble right away has decided to run an independent farmers market on weekends and holidays. Issues start right away, stalls are not set up right, an earthquake and a dead body. Yikes. Maria is thrown into town gossip and trying to find a murderer. I think the story was well done and was a fast read and kept me engaged and trying to figure out who it was til the end. Definitely recommend.
With all the murders that happen in this small town I'm not sure it's a place I want to visit....lol
The farmers market should be a great place to celebrate the 4th of July weekend right? by the ocean, near the lighthouse on a gorgeous sunny weekend what could be more perfect than a local markets lot's of local produce and people to meet, such a shame murder had to take away from the happy event but hey if you're going to be murdered it seems Danger Cove is the place for it.
I love a good cozy mystery and all of the Danger Cove books are just wonderful, great characters a quaint small town full of nosy people...lol
This is the 14th/ 1 in the series. The main character is Maria Dolores, the new manager of the farmer's market. This is her first weekend in Danger Cove but her family came from there. Her great-great-great grandma ran the lighthouse house there. The new job starts out with trouble as two of the stall owners are in a fight in the parking lot and ends up with two murders. Maria tries to keep everything running smoothly but ends up with a dead body on Saturday and then on Sunday another body. Who is behind this and can she help figure this out ?
This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. The story flowed very well and was very enjoyable. This book will keep you reading long into the night and you will not want to put this book down until you finish. This was such a great read and full of surprises. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Stupendous! Can she solve the two murders that have occurred at her first outing as market manager? She is dogged in her approach to the problem but aims to conquer her own fears of failing. He is more laid back in his approach. The plot is involved and the final solution was from an answer I didn't expect until the very end. Love cozies that leave you guessing until the end. Brilliant!
Excellent story. Enough twists and turns to keep going in the wrong direction. There were a few subtle clues that I did pick up on. I had started to look at the true murderer because of them. Still a fantastic read. I look forward to reading more of the Danger Cove stories. Really well written mystery story. The books that I have read so far have been very entertaining and a pure pleasure to read. I plan to read all the books in the series.
A Farmer's Market, a great place to spend the weekend and pick up some really items you think, except for this Farmer's Market where murder appears to be part of the choices. Lots of twists and turns and surprises until you get to the completely unexpected reveal and the murderer turns out to be someone you would never expect. If you love mysteries, then you're going to love following this story to the end.
Who doesn't love a farmers market. This series gets better with each installment. I enjoy each and every character. I am looking forward to see what the next adventure will be.
I voluntarily reviewed and Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Who knew so much went into organizing a Farmers Market? Maria does! She's so well-organized and handles everything with calmness I can't imagine. I want to be her friend! Great book with so many twists and turns. Looking forward to more about Maria's life in Danger Cove.
Ok. Some interesting characters & moral lessons. I like The treatment of Cary ….showing how tho not functioning like most people, he had definite skills! Some of the others seem like just introductions for later books.
Maria Delores, namesake of Lighthouse founder, takes over as the farmers Market manager on 4th of july weekend and early on the 1st afternoon one of the vendors is murdered. Fast paced ever changing story making for great reading
She's very optimistic and determined to do her best at her new job as market manager. There's a lot going on yet impossible to even have an inkling as to whodunnit until the end. The murders themselves didn't seem to evoke enough emotion or shock factor.
I was already a fan of the Danger Cove multi-author series and a big fan of Gin Jones's other series so it is no surprise that I really enjoyed A Death in the Flower Garden and look forward to more books in the series. The plot was both intelligently presented throughout and reasonable from the justification for the murder to the encounter between murder and victim. There were clues to the murderer but they were not obvious. I like and connected with Maria Delores, main character, as well as Carl, Merrill, and Tom; I have to like the main characters to enjoy any book. The antagonists were well done and not over played. I hope Henry moves to the friend side but it will take time if it is going to happen. He is a strong character even if he is a bit of curmudgeon.
Maria Delores has been a finance manager for her whole career but has now taken over a small open market that sets up on weekends and holidays. It is a cozy mystery so you know what is going to happen on the very first day but a murder is just one of the surprises she has to face. Also typical for a cozy mystery, she said too much about her suspicions to too many people. Other than that the novel stands out as unique in the world of cozy mysteries. I am not sure if the main character's first and last name is Maria Delores or if that is the name she goes by.
I won an advanced readers' copy of A Death in the Flower Garden from Gin Jones, the author. I signed up for the Facebook contest because I enjoy all of Gin Jones books written alone or in conjunction with Elizabeth Ashby, but I keep wondering if Elizabeth Ashby is real, after all she lives in Danger Cove. I always review books that I enjoy and I truly enjoyed my weekend in Danger's Cove.
This is the 14th book in the Danger Cove Series. This series always stays fresh due to multiple great authors writing different books in the series. This was another great installment. You do not need to read the previous books to read this one, but they are all great. Pick up your copy today!
