There was no way I could protect her and my heart at the same time.
Cope McDaniels is known for two things: His cocky charm and his sterling reputation for keeping high-profile clients safe. Until a security job goes bad, and he suddenly finds his career on thin ice. Cope’s newest assignment comes with serious consequences - he’ll keep his job as long as he makes no mistakes.
Cope isn’t worried…until his new client turns out to be a beautiful blast from his past.
Big wave surfer Serena Swift loves the adrenaline of her sport. And the elite athlete hates being told what to do. That goes double when the orders are coming from the sexy bodyguard-in-a-suit who broke her heart.
But she doesn’t have a choice when a mysterious threat materializes and Serena’s sponsor saddles her with the last man she’d want guarding her body. She’d rather focus on her next surf competition, not on some shadowy danger or the arrogant ex who dared to get even hotter since their breakup.
Cope can’t stop butting heads with his new client. Just like old times, Serena refuses to play it safe, even when it’s clear she’s in peril. Now the intimacy of spending every second of the day by her side is wearing away at his self-control. He can’t afford to lose focus, but everything about the woman is a constant distraction.
Including the fact that their divorce was never finalized…

Out of the Blue was a great second chance romance with some light suspense. I’ve always been fascinated with surfing and here it’s the heroine Serena who’s shining in that field. It was fun when her ex husband suddenly showed up after 4 years and now was her bodyguard. Sadly their connection and chemistry wasn’t working for me. It was too much tellling and not showing. The secondary characters were terrific especially Serena’s coach Dora and the other female surfer friends Prue and Kalei. Serena and her brother Caleb had a close relationship because of their past. That added some depth to the story and their connection which I really enjoyed. The overall premise of the story was okay. I felt the story with its strong feminist message was trying too hard to make a statement. It didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the story though. Out of the Blue was still an entertaining second chance romance with some mighty fine steam.
THIS is how you do second chance romance! It’s a trope that I tend to avoid, but every once in awhile, I'll read one that will just absolutely knock it out of the park - like this. It's deeply romantic, with the perfect amount of angst, longing, and tender moments. The sexual tension and unending love are present in every scene, and the tiny snippets of filthy flashbacks give this some serious HEAT while remaining a slow burn. I loved the quick dialogue, the obvious affection between these two - and the suspenseful storyline just ratcheted everything up another notch. Everybody could use a husband like Cope; he completely melted my heart.
This follows Serena and Cope, two people whose love story should've lasted a lifetime. They were young and a little reckless when they got married, but their bond was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of connection, and neither one could see a future without their partner in it. Unfortunately, they both have dangerous jobs, and standing back while the one you love puts themselves in harm's way is not an easy thing. They weren't strong enough to work through those issues the first time around, so they've spent the last four years apart... though neither one has made any real effort to move on. And they're still married. So when Cope is assigned as Serena's bodyguard at her first major surfing competition, it brings them back into each other's lives, and those dangerous jobs are front and center.
While this is more suspenseful than the romance I've been reading lately, that really worked for the storyline. It's Serena and Cope's jobs and insecurities that tore them apart the first time, so it makes sense that they'd be at the forefront of any potential reconciliation. I adored the intensity of their love, from the brokenhearted banter, to the sizzling chemistry, to the obvious devotion. And the steamy scenes are smokin' hot while showcasing their shared intimacy. This is free from any OW/OM drama, and I have zero doubt that both Serena and Cope missed their partner every day they spent apart. The angst comes into play because there isn't an easy solution; if there was a simple way to move forward, they would've done that already. This whole story put me through my paces emotionally, because it's got a little of everything. But I was wholeheartedly rooting for these two to move forward, and their reconciliation seriously gave my heart some flutters. I was lucky enough to receive an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this marriage in trouble romance.
This is hands down the best book this author has ever written. I just finished this five minutes ago, and my emotions are all over the place in the best of ways!! I knew from the blurb we were going to be getting an angsty, second chance romance, but I was no way prepared FOR THAT ANGST. Holy crap. The longing, the pure love, the sexual tension, the mystery/suspense: this was all TOP notch writing!!
Here we have Cope and Serena, two people who are very much in love with each other even though they have been separated for the past four years. You can just *feel* the yearning they have for one another, but these two have some very deep-seated issues that never seems to go anywhere thanks to their stubbornness: they just keep going 'round and 'round on the merry-go-around, and all that's left are broken hearts on both sides. Their reunion is a surprising one for Serena, who now needs a body guard since she just singed with a high profile company (she is a mega-famous surfing competitor. Talk about BADASS.) and is now struggling to come to the conclusion that the what she believed in may be a lie, and that her ex is now back in her life making her wish they never said goodbye at all. Talk about tears and angst, romance lovers!!
I'm trying so hard to be vague here, but this book just made my chest ACHE. I loved both of these characters so much, and I also adored how Cope really wasn't afraid to show his emotions: yes he did shove them down at times, but you never know how you will react in the aftermaths of a dangerous situation, and being that he also had such a great loss that impacted his young life.. you can definitely relate to why he shut down that part of himself. But seeing him open up to Serena once again? Not a dry eye in this house! I just loved the way these two loved one another!
I just can't recommend this book enough! Make sure you one click when this goes live TOMORROW!!!
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions**
Young and in love -- drunk in Vegas -- married by an Elvis Impersonator -- and then their marriage hits the skids. Four long years later, their paths cross unexpectedly and a second chance for a do-over is a possibility.
Riding the waves is her thing — her protection is his.
Serena Swift and Copeland McDaniels are both likable characters, and together they are simply irresistible. I felt the plot premise and characters were interesting on the surface, but overall lacking strong development.
In this book, the surfing component is without a doubt the standout attention-grabber. The sexual banter, the steamy sizzling romance, along with the infusion of corporate mystique energizes this sport-related romance. And how often do we get a female surfing champion!
2.75 stars The writing itself was fine. I just struggled to get into the story and get drawn into caring about the characters and the outcome after the first couple of chapters. I made it to the end but it was a struggle. Might just be a case of it’s not the book, it’s me.
I absolutely loved the sports aspect of this, particularly with it being a female athlete, and then the pairing being with her not-quite-ex-husband bodyguard was an inspired choice. The corporate espionage stuff was probably needed to have a plot for the book, but I do confess I skimmed a lot of that. Would definitely pick up the author again and thanks to Fated Mates for the rec!
When professional surfer, Serena, becomes the brand ambassador for a eco-friendly sporting goods line, the brand ends up hiring her a security detail for a 3-week gig. The last thing Serena expects is for her husband—who she hasn’t seen in 4-years—to be her new security guy, constantly with & next to her for weeks on end.
Cope never forgot about Serena and since they never officially filed for divorce, he’s been hoping that him & Serena will eventually find their way back to each other. Feelings start surfacing again the more time they spend together and when they start discovering that things may be shady at the company Serena’s working with, Cope wants nothing more than to keep the love of his life safe…
Out of the Blue by Kathryn Nolan is a second chance, bodyguard, sports romance with a mystery/suspense twist. This was a really good storyline overall and I liked Cope & Serena’s romance! I love how this centered around a sports I don’t know too much about (surfing) and the whole bodyguard aspect worked for me, even if it’s not a trope in books I usually gravitate toward. I wish there were more flashbacks/explanation of Serena & Cope’s past romance to create a greater foundation for their current one. But even with that minor hiccup, I really enjoyed this! 4/5 stars.
This was scorching! Romantic suspense can be hit or miss with me, but the chemistry between Serena and Cope was perfection. As professional surfer Serena is given a bodyguard after signing an ambassador deal with her dream company, it's a whirlwind of emotions when her ex-husband is hired for the job.
Separated for the past four years, the sexual tension between them was red-hot. And the glimpses of their relationship through flashbacks was such a fantastic buildup. With such a strong connection between them, I do wish there was a tad more information about their separate lives during those four years, though. Their lack of communication would have felt more clear to me.
But aside from that, I loved this fresh take on a sports romance. It was adrenaline packed, not only because of the suspense element but also because of the surfing details. I felt completely immersed in the moments when Serena was on the water—I was literally holding my breath at one point. This story also tackles the sexism women face in the surfing industry, and I loved seeing Serena fight back against that. I'd definitely recommend this one!
Not to long ago, I asked for bodyguard romance recommendations where the person being guarded wasn't a whiny a-hole who decided to "teach the bodyguard a lesson" by trying to make his/her job harder. Well, I found one!! Here's the deal:
Plot overview: Serena is a pro surfer who just landed a huge deal as a big corporation's spokesperson. They decided she'll need added security. The man they hire just happens to be a blast from her past, Cope McDaniels.
Trope bingo: bodyguard romance, second chance romance, pro athlete romance
I honestly loved everything about this book. But here are the highlights:
Serena, the heroine: She's tough, smart, and not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. She's a fighter. In fact, she's more than up to the task of fighting the misogynic crap her fellow female athletes deal with on a daily basis, and she's willing to use her huge platform to do it. And even though she's not actively in any danger when the book starts, she's willing to accept the extra security gracefully. She's thankful to have someone looking out for her, which was an exceptionally mature attitude. (And that attitude is NOT something I've found in all bodyguard romance, unfortunately.)
Cope, the hero: He's sexy, he's a bodyguard, he has a great sense of humor, and he's been pining for the heroine for years. I mean, other than rescuing dogs, he really couldn't have been any hotter.
Not too scary: I would call this one romantic suspense light. Sure, the stakes are serious, but not super scary serious. You won't have any nightmares after reading this one.
Sexy times: If you're looking for super hot, super passionate sexy times, look no more. This is the book you want.
Unique premise: I honestly can't think of too many romances out there featuring female pro surfers. It's a world I didn't know much of anything about, and I found it super interesting. The author could've made her heroine...oh, I dunno...a gymnast or figure skater or some other typically female-dominated sport, but she went with a unique premise and I really dig that.
So, long-story-short, if you're looking for a super hot romance between a couple of mature characters in the type of danger that won't give you nightmares, this is the read for you. It was CERTAINLY a great read for me.
(And on a totally shallow note...the cover's really pretty.)
“Our love story was always meant to be.” Serena and Cope are everything! Their story is written in first person from a dual POV. I really enjoyed Serena’s character. She embraces the joy of living her life to the fullest. Though she has had events in her life that made her angry, she has learned to channel that anger into a positive force. I loved her focus, her strength of character, and her zest for life. She is courageous and determined to be her absolute best and to make a difference in her sport and in the world. Cope is a big heart in a lethal looking bodyguard suit. I loved him so much! I loved his sense of humor and his protective nature. The way he loves Serena made my heart melt. I loved reading as he learned to face his fears head-on and accept that life lacks a certain amount of control. This is a special second chance romance. Though they were apart, they never let go of each other in their hearts. They are brought back together through a series of events. I adored when they recognize that that they have both grown and changed over the time they were apart. I was especially pleased when they both put in the work to trust each other and communicate in ways they never did before. The author does an excellent job of demonstrating the decisions necessary for the couple to move beyond past hurts to a brighter future. They have and intense and passionate relationship, and the book delivers some high heat scenes that demonstrate the connection between Serena and Cope and the intensity of their feelings for each other. This is a beautifully written book. The characters are likable, well-developed, complex, and have strong motivations to change the world. Their love story captivated me completely. There are so many layers to the story, I was completely engaged from beginning to end. The secondary characters were interesting and important. I really hope we will get to see some of them again and maybe even read of their happily-ever-afters. I am sure I will read this one many times and find new layers with each read. Romance readers seriously need to read this book. I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.
Off the charts heat and romantic suspense is Kathryn Nolan's niche and expertise, and she more than excels with this amazing book. Cope and Serena have a love for the ages that got lost along the way, and its evident every time they're on the page together. The longing, the regret, it's visceral as you read. Add in a kick-ass heroine fighting for what's right and the man who will protect her at all costs, I loved every second of this book.
This is the kind of suspense that can be really readable for me when I'm in a bit of a book slump, so this was a great choice for this past weekend. The female professional athlete angle in this one was really great.
surfer x bodyguard and they are ex husband and wife?? hell yes. THIS BOOK WAS EXACTLY WHAT I HOPED IT WOUDL BE.
This book was the perfect second chance romance, I was in the mood for (thank you T for the recommendation <3 ).
Serena and Cope fell madly in love with each other and got married when they were 24. Now, 4 years later, they haven’t seen or talked to each other in those years. Serena made it to the top and is a pro surfer now. Cope is a hot bodyguard.
And suddenly their paths cross again: Cope is assigned as Serena’s security guard.
Whilst the pining and longing in this book isn’t particularly angsty, it’s instantly tension on level 10/10. The flirty banter and feelings that never went away are palpable from the first page they meet again. The air around those two is constantly charged with longing and sexual tension.
But they didn’t break up for no reason, so it’s also old fights heating up again. But those two have grown older and wiser and it’s beautiful to see them work on the problems they had in the past and not being willing to let the same thing separate them again.
The problem many have with second chance romance is… they did break up. Why am I supposed to believe as a reader, that it’s happy ending now? The author did a phenomenal job portraying both of their character developments. They realize they needed that break to grow as people and be stronger together now.
Their romance was beautiful to read about. It’s feelings and emotions and healthy communication. It’s soulmates meeting again and not being willing to loose each other a second time.
And alongside that pure love blossoming again, you get woman surfer action. Female empowerment. Their fight to get recognized as athletes and not only nice bodies to look at. Serena doesn’t shut up about problems and uses her platform to bringing attention to things like sexism and discrimination in the surfer world.
Overall a highly enjoyable read with captivating writing and an exciting story! I haven’t read any book by Kathryn Nolan before, but im definitely going to check out some now! She knows what she’s doing as an author!
Out of the Blue by Kathryn Nolan is a contemporary second-chance bodyguard romance that takes place in the world of professional surfing, and is told in first person, dual POV.
Protection agent Copeland McDaniels is on thin ice with his boss; one mistake could cost him his job. When he learns his new client is his wife, Cope knows he should tell his boss so she can assign somebody else to the security detail. But he and Serena haven’t been in contact for a few years and he’s dying to see her again.
When big wave surfer Serena Swift gets a sponsorship with the most respected eco-conscious company in the world, she’s excited about having a platform to make a real difference. When she meets her security team, the last thing Serena expects is to come face to face with her estranged husband. Having a bodyguard is only a precaution, and Serena refuses to let Cope boss her around. But when a real threat surfaces, she doesn’t have a choice.
What will happen as Cope and Serena spend time together? Can they resolve the problems that once tore them apart? As the threats escalate, will Cope be able to keep Serena safe? Read the book to find out.
I loved Serena and Cope’s love story. Both were likeable, strong, passionate larger-than-life characters, and from the moment they were on the page together, their chemistry was evident. I loved the witty jokes and banter they shared. Kathryn Nolan does such a wonderful job setting a scene that I could practically smell the sunblock and hear the waves crashing and the crowd cheering as if I was with them at the beach watching the surf competition. Serena and Cope were perfect for each other, and I was rooting for them to deal with their issues and work things out so they could be together again. This sweet, sexy, steamy, and suspenseful story kept me turning the pages until I finished the book in one sitting. I loved it!
What happens when you take an independent, outspoken female athlete, put her together with her bodyguard ex-husband and add in an eco-friendly company that talks the talk? Quite a lot, actually.
World-class surfer, Serena Swift, has been offered a sweetheart of an endorsement deal with a company that makes surfing gear and prides itself on its commitment to the environment. Because they’ve had safety issues with some of their previous athletes, they hire security protection for Serena.
Cope McDaniels is on thin ice after not following protocol on his last job. When he gets assigned to protect his ex-wife, he knows he should disclose their history to his boss, but that will get him taken off the assignment. And no one can protect Serena better than Cope.
I wish I had connected more with these characters, but I thought Cope was too much of a pushover to see him as the strong, alpha hero I think he was meant to be. And while these two spent a lot of time between the sheets and on numerous other flat surfaces, it lacked the strong emotional component that serves to draw two characters closer together and invests me completely in their story.
The surfing element of this book is incredibly well done and awe inspiring. Forget The Endless Summer movie, because this book takes us into the mind of the surfer, letting us experience everything through her eyes, and it's absolutely breathtaking!
While I love the message of living your dream and living in the moment, the championing of a female in a male-dominated sport felt a lot like preaching to the choir. Where Serena's character should have been an inspiring voice for change, it came across to me more akin to a moody tweenager sțomping her foot in an effort to get her way.
In asking us to trust them with our romantic hearts, an author also must trust her readers. Nuance and an adroit touch go a long way in captivating our minds and capturing our emotions. It allows us to stay in the moment, connect with the characters on a visceral level, and hold them close in our hearts long after the last page.
If you're looking for a light, easy read with an element of suspense and a ton of steam, you'll enjoy this one. And let’s face it, a romance about surfing really is the epitome of a perfect beach read.
First of all, when I first saw the blurb for this book… I screamed because I knew I needed this story.
And Kathryn delivered in a way that exceeded every expectation I thought I had. You are sucked into this story from the very start, wanting and needing to know what happens next.
Cope and Serena are explosive and dynamic. These two lit my kindle on fire and it was only the waves from the ocean that put it out. These two will have you falling in love with them over and over again.
Serena has definitely secured her spot in one of my top favorite heroines EVER and I’m not even mad about it. It’s going to be really hard to surpass her level of greatness.
Kathryn builds her characters with finesse that will have you feeling like they are real people and you’re watching their story unfold in front of you in real time.
Five stars for this captivating story that had me on the edge of my seat from the very start and had me crying when it was all said and done because I wasn’t ready to let it go.
Cope and Serena burn up the pages of this novel. They were once madly in love and living the dream, until their world shattered into pieces that neither of them seem to have been able to put back together even after four years apart. Serena lifelong dreams are starting to come true with her surfing career and she finally has the backing she thinks she need to make some big waves in the pro-surf world. But with that backing comes danger. Enter in her new bodyguard, who knows every single inch of her body, just as she knows every single inch of his; as any married couple should. The danger heats up, Cope and Serena are plunged into the depths of their failed marriage while trying to stay alive. I absolutely loved the characters and Ms. Nolan weaves a page turning story that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
I. LOVED. THIS. Book! Kathryn Nolan has once again written a story that I feel like I was a part of. Serena and Cope are so real that I know them. I see the world around them. I feel their feelings. Serena is a strong and vibrant woman. Cope is a strong and easy going man. They are so in love and so far apart at the beginning but I was pulling for them from the first page. This book is sweet and hot. Suspenseful and calm. It's everything you would expect from Kathryn Nolan!
"It was such an inconvenient time for my ex-husband to reclaim my heart." From Out Of The Blue by Kathryn Nolan
Another gorgeous, swoon worthy romance from the pen of the talented Kathryn Nolan. Her writing is pure gold. Here we have Serena and Cope, the world of the big wave and the utter courage and focus it takes to ride them. Kathryn Nolan writes the most beautiful, tender romances which never fail to warm my heart and sooth any rough edges, as she writes with a love for people which always infuses her books. Serena and Cope are wonderfully, completely and vividly imagined, springing to life with all their hopes, disappointments and passion, for each other and for what they do. In Serena's case for her waves, for her, and other's, place in this world and in Cope's, his overriding need to protect. Out of the Blue has it all. Romance, intrigue, magnificent seascapes, and characters with whom I fell in love. Gorgeous 💖💖💖💖💖💖
Five stars for Kathryn Nolan's newest second chance romance, Out Of The Blue!!
Cope and Serena aren't just sexy y'all, they're the kind of couple I can cheer on ALL DAY LONG!
Cope is that kind of grumpy/funny guy that tries really hard not to let anything get to close to all those feelings he's failing to hide, but when you get to know him he'll do anything for you if he loves you. Loyal to the bone, hot AF, and determined not to let anyone make Serena Swift feel small ever again.
Serena Swift, elite surfer, activist, damaged daughter, wicked smart woman, loves her found family with everything she has, and is still madly in love with Cope!!
The suspense, and steam, in this book had me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole thing!! I absolutely adore Kathryn's slowwww burns, that first kiss is STUNNING! All the stars for the surfer and the bodyguard!
One of my fav Summer 2021 reads! Second chance romance, steamy ass scenes, bad ass female lead, with a suspense twist. Gah its perfect to read pool or beach side!
✔️Dual POV (Cope x Serena) ✔️Set in California ✔️Open-door, contemporary romance (4 / 5🌶️) ✔️Tropes: Romantic suspense; sports romance (surfing); second chance romance; bodyguard romance
The chemistry between Cope and Serena was electric. The suspense plot didn’t quite add to the tension, but what’s a bodyguard romance without the heroine being in danger?
3.5 stars. Cope McDaniels hasn't seen his wife Serena Swift in about 4 years. He's been working as a bodyguard and is skating on thin ice at the job, but when his new assignment involves protecting Serena, he knows he's the only one who can look after her despite their past. Serena is an elite athlete surfer who has just secured sponsorship, which will serve as a great platform for her to bring awareness to important issues like gender inequality in sports. Between balancing the stress of competition, fishy business with her new sponsor, receiving threats and dealing with an estranged spouse as a bodyguard, she has more than a full plate to handle.
This started out strong and I enjoyed the chemistry and antagonism between Cope and Serena. Despite their arguments, it was obvious they were still very much in love and that neither had moved on. When it came time to hash out the old hurts and to really dig deep, that wasn't as productive as I had hoped. Also, Cope was a little too laid back with all of his jokes and humor while working on the job. And he definitely should not have been keeping the secrets that he did to jeopardize that job. Some of the events that played out didn't go in the direction that I was wanting, but the ending was still where it was supposed to be and both characters definitely matured in the process.
