Shannon Work writes traditional mysteries set in the Rocky Mountains and Texas. The Mountain Resort Mystery Series features detective Jack Martin, a former FBI agent from Texas who now solves murders committed in the most exclusive resort towns in Colorado, including Aspen, Vail, and Telluride.
Shannon grew up in Del Rio, a border town in the dusty wilds of West Texas. When she graduated from high school, she moved east to College Station and graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor's degree in Journalism and a master's degree in Land Economics and Real Estate.
Most of her working life has been spent developing real estate, earning a national Best in America Living Award for one of her developments.
Shannon and her husband are recent empty nesters and split their time between Houston, Texas and Telluride, Colorado. Always with their three rescue dogs in tow!
This book has a lot of high ratings but for me it was just average. I am typically harder on thriller or mystery books because I can guess endings. The more you read the genre, the more the red herrings stand out. This was an okay story with some good characters. I thought the author went off in the weeds a little bit with the descriptions when I just wanted to get back to the plot. The ending was not really a twist for me. All in all, just okay.
I thought that the characters were well developed and interesting. Each with their own flaws and quirks. It is a murder mystery with someone killed right at the start. I did not read the first book but now will go back and read that also. Jack Martin detective is very interesting and normal character who is hired to solve the mystery by the wife of the deceased as she is the primary suspect and knows she did not do it. Very quick and easy read and kept me going wanting to figure out who the murderer is and how it will be figured out. Very well done.
I felt as though I knew each character because the descriptions were so vivid . I especially liked Doris.. The conversations between the characters were always interesting and kept the story moving forward. Thankfully there was just enough description for visualizing and was not overly done to the point boredom. I was sure I had it solved at the conclusion of Elliott's funeral , but the more I read the more I kept changing my mind . A very gripping and good read I want to go on another case with Jack Martin .
ok story and characters but too much unnecessary verbiage and not a surprise ending…
Read the whole thing but won’t read any more by this author. The story and characters were ok but there was far too much unnecessary descriptions and side notes. By the end it was obvious “who done it” so no great mystery either. Author needs to edit, edit and edit again. Have no idea how it received such high ratings…..to each his own. I wasn’t impressed.
I loved it. I would recommend it. I thought I had figured it out then there it had a whole twist I didn't expect it. I cant wait till the next one comes out.
I thought this was pretty good, but I liked the first book more. I couldn't relate to Victoria and never really warmed up to her. She didn't act like someone who had just lost their great love and it was strange that she wanted to spend so much time in the room he had been killed. The villains were detestable, and I was glad to see them get their comeuppance. Unfortunately, I guessed the killer early on and the secondary plot twist as well, so there weren't any surprises for me. The editing could have been better as there were some inconsistencies and a lot of repetition. Still, I like Jack and I like the author's writing so I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
This was book 2 in the series. You wouldn’t need to have read book 1 to follow this mystery. Just like book 1, I really enjoyed this book. Victoria Banks was trying to find out who committed a murder. It brings back Jack from book 1 to help investigate the crime. What I enjoyed about this book was that the author pulled in a host of characters that could be possible suspects. It wasn’t until the end when you could be sure. Really a fun read and I look forward to book 3.
I found this to be a well-paced and genuinely entertaining read that kept me engaged from start to finish. That said, as a crime thriller novel, this one felt somewhat underwhelming and I would rate it an average one. The plot unfolded smoothly, but the ending was disappointingly predictable. There weren’t many and red herrings, and the plot was lacking in psychological complexity and clever twists .
Elliot Banks, CEO and Founder of Banks Oil & Gas, is murdered in his study. Victoria, his wife, is the leading suspect. She calls Jack Martin to investigate the murder and figure out who really killed her husband. There are several mysteries in the stories with plenty of bad guys and quirky characters. She does a great job of introducing the killer but keeping the identity hidden until the last minute.
Victoria Banks is not your typical strong female protagonist. She’s secretive and vulnerable—but she’s not the only leading character. Jack Martin is smart and tenacious. The book drops hints, but gives nothing away until the end. A fun detective story to dive into.
The story kept me engaged and wanting to know more, chapter after chapter. I enjoyed the depth of not just solving one crime, but others, as well. Jack Martin...great character! Remarkably suspenseful!
Can't wait for the next one! Spellbinding and mysterious! I find myself trying to solve and I'm not disappointed. Good writing and paints pictures in my mind. Can't wait for next one!
This is my second. Read by their author, and I like her style. The plot keeps me interested and I’m always wrong at guessing who did. Looking forward to reading more books from this author.
Once again, Shannon Work wrote a page turner whodunnit with everything you would want in a murder mystery. Loved it and looking forward to the author’s next book.
A murder mystery that will leave you speechless! Everything to Lose is brilliantly plotted and executed, not to mention has one of the best detectives to date!
Definitely suspenseful! Keeps you guessing until the very end! Her descriptions of the books surroundings really makes you feel like you're in the mountains.
With every page it was a great read & hard to put down. The ending was surprising and happy at the same time. I never expected the person who killed Elliott.
The characters were well written in the fact that I grew to really like them as I read. It was not as much of a pages turned as I like but I kept reading and was pleased with the outcome.
