Emily Fitzsimmons, award-winning architect, creates meticulous plans for every aspect of her life, which is understandable considering her difficult childhood. After all, prudence keeps her safe. Lately, though, too many of those comforting plans are disintegrating and Emily is forced to function spontaneously which has spiked her anxiety so much, she’s put her therapist on speed-dial. Skye Reynolds, bike courier entrepreneur, knows all about exploding plans. That’s literally how she lost her job when her company blew up a 40,000-year-old world heritage site. But Skye is not someone who asks for help to reassemble her life blueprints, which is lucky as she nearly always lands on her feet whenever she happily ignores prudence to embark on any new adventure. When Skye’s ad hoc dirt track intersects with Emily’s carefully paved freeway, their lives are thrown into disarray, with the added complication of their unexpected attraction. Prudence plays tricks on both of them when they choose to navigate their true paths and explore the direction of their relationship. Sometimes a change of plans is all you need to see what lies ahead.
Best-selling author KJ lives in Bendigo, Australia with her wife, their son, three cats and a dog. She started writing interesting observations of life, literary articles, poetry, creative non-fiction, and personal essays, and eventually they were all sort of smooshed together in a giant author-y blender and out popped a book. Then another. The blender is currently in use for KJ’s next novel. Her books are best-sellers, with all either finalists or winners in the Goldie Awards, IHeartSapphic, eLit Awards and LesFic Bard awards. KJ also writes novels under her other pen name: K.J. Wrights
As I was starting KJ’s new novel, I joked that her books were always good, and easy to review. Ugh. I was absolutely right about the good part but the easy to review? Not so much. This book messed with my head. It’s not a difficult book, it’s not dark, it’s not problematic. It’s very human. And that’s what got to me. Again.
So, what is this very human book about ? Emily is a successful architect with her own firm and the best team. She’s also an overplanner and she has her own reasons for that. They’re totally valid reasons but the overplanning and the rigidity that goes with it make her life a bit complicated when it comes to relationships and interactions with other less-planning people. Then, with the intervention of a higher power, Skye comes into Emily’s life. And everything changes.
For years, my first reaction whenever someone suggested a change of plans was “no”. It still is but now that I’m aware of it, I don’t usually say it aloud. I blame it on dyspraxia: when everything new implies shrewd calculation, changing plans on a whim doesn’t come easily. As I was telling friends recently, I can do new and I can do unplanned but not both at the same time. While planning things makes me feel safe, it can also be exhausting. As strange as this will sound, lockdown brought relief in that regard. When we first went into lockdown last year, a weight fell off my shoulders. Suddenly, no planning was necessary anymore. No planning was possible, even. In all the turmoil that is the world, despite the pandemic and all it implies, I welcomed the quiet. Silver linings and all that.
So yeah, I see a lot of myself in Emily. Or is it my former self? Who knows, we’re all works in progress. Anyway, once again, I’m studying myself (should I blame my therapist for this?) instead of focusing on the book. The book is the star of the review yet I can’t help it if it resonates. KJ knows a thing or two about mental health and it shows.
Back to the star. The star of the book isn’t Emily’s constant planning, it isn’t Skye’s efforts to rein in her own spontaneous self. It’s the romance, the self-evident love story between two adorable and stunning characters who, like every character KJ creates, deserve the best. Not because they’re perfect, because they aren’t. They’re kind and unfair and stubborn and overall wonderfully real and good. They’re also stronger together. They’re both each other’s right person, the person who will help you be the best version of yourself. The person who makes you feel safe, safe enough to be who you are.
Like with every KJ book, there are many layers to this one. You can read it for the romance and enjoy it fully. You can read it for the insight on mental health and enjoy it fully. You can read it for the dysfunctional families, for employees who are essentially friends, for the beauty of Ikebana. You can read it for the writing and the humour and the sexy scenes. There’s nothing simple about this story and these characters and yet they bring simple joy.
I couldn't put a finger on why, despite it being a really well written book, didn't click with me. I tried hard to find a connection with the story since it got good reviews from some GR friends.
I so liked Emily's character. With so much potential! However Skye's character felt kind of hollow to me. No spark inside, lukewarm.
I think K J deserves my attention and I would like to read another of her books in the future, cause this time, maybe was me the one who didn't fit with the story. 3*
This was wonderful to read. I'm pretty sure I'd be swooning over Emily if she were a person I met in real life. Skye's pretty great on her own too except the times she was behaving unreasonably. I loved how they clicked though and their pieces just fit one another.
Oh, and KJ... you got me questioning the streets of Melbourne CBD! I had to keep reminding myself this is a work of fiction so actual street names needn't be used.
Double Oh! I love that there’s a Filipino in the supporting cast of Aussies. Representation Yo! 🇵🇭🇦🇺
What I love about KJ's books is that you always get a little more than your basic romance. Her characters are a bit on the non-traditional side in that Emily Fitzsimmons - while extremely successful in her profession - struggles with anxiety and as result, plans things to death. Skye Reynolds is a woman who had everything going for her on the professional front and then had a huge set-back when the company she did marketing for crashed and burned in a very public way. So Skye is starting over and so is Emily in a way when her personal life takes a very unexpected and painful turn. While you get the traditional girl-meets-girl romance here, I appreciate the insight into where Emily's anxiety comes from and why she feels the need to meticulously plan every moment of her life. When she is challenged to try something spontaneous, she gets a whole lot more than she bargained for. Skye too is an interesting character who has always had to rely solely on herself to make it in the world and she struggles to accept help of any kind from anyone. She is quite a relatable character and I found both hers and Emily's struggles to be insightful and real. While the resolution to what they had to overcome seemed perhaps a bit too easy, it didn't take away from the fact that the issue was something that deserved attention and gives the reader something to think about. And both MCs were so damn appealing it was fun to go along for the ride. KJ never disappoints and her books are always a must-read for me. 4.25 stars.
Sweet and cute, this is certainly another great story by KJ. If you haven't read anything by this gifted Australian writer, you don't know what you're missing. Shame on you.
Look… I loved this book and how, I guess human, it is. But the dark moment, not a break up, but a time out happens too late and was just so incredibly childish. Even though I saw it coming very early on, which actually had me thinking the issue would arise sooner.
Anyway… Emily is an over-planner with very successful architect business. Her overplanning comes from her past and she is trying to deal with it with the help of a therapist. In comes Skye. Thrust together, sorta, by their mutual connection Loraine, they start to flirt, become friendly and “really” friendly ;) There is lots of communication and sharing of feelings, view on life, past trauma, all very well done. And then, at the 82% mark or so, we have this drama moment in which they just hurl insults to each other, triggering phrases and it just doesn’t suit these characters, nor the story. Up until then the story was fun and human and light. That scene just felt completely out of place and after that I just really couldn’t get on board with everything again.
My overal feeling of this book is still very positive, I just wish the drama was handled differently.
This was an enjoyable and thought-provoking story centered around a group of friends and coworkers, providing a diverse and interesting cast of secondary characters. I always enjoy stories that depict personal growth in a thoughtful way, and that was why this was a five-star read for me.
I wanted to like this, the premise seemed interesting and the author is well loved here, but I couldn’t. I didn’t get the connection, I didn’t want them to fall in love, I think Emily deserved better.
The book had a nice start. You get to know the characters and their quirks, the secondary characters where interesting and diverse enough, and the “I’m forced to be with you because reasons” trope is something I like. I could see the MCs being happily ever after and the needed conflict started to reveal itself, I was invested, until Skye became so pushy, preachy and intense.
You have a strong opinion about something? Good! Do something, but no, she did nothing but expect others to change everything to her liking, didn’t propose a solution, never picked up a phone, looked for a government official to learn/yell, didn’t offer her place, did nothing but be angry about it. At the end the author kinda said “surprise! This horrible personality trait was part of the story all along, because this and that, see? She’s self aware and she’s going to change!” but no, the way the relationship got fixed was the part I disliked the most. The convenient ally that solves everything was to be expected, but the way Emily was treated/written at the end was a no for me.
I really enjoyed the writing style. It kept my interest and was very readable. Both characters likable, but not perfect. There is a lot of good communication until there is the argument but it made sense (mostly). I thought the resolution was lovely if a bit unrealistic. Even if it’s a bit too perfect of an ending, I don’t care it put a big smile on my face. ❤️😀
If you have kindle unlimited I would 💯 recommend if the premise sounds interesting to you.
I loved this book - it caught me early and never let me go. Two looking for what they thought they needed when really it was the polar opposite. 2 great mcs, with plenty of others making it all real. Recommended. (Love the supportive gay men characters who are always so perfect- in gay men fiction are there often fabulous Lesbian couples?)
Two complete different women. One, whose life is ordered and planned. The other, spontaneous and flexible. Both still bearing the scars of an emotionally charged past. Emily is convinced that when you don't follow plans, someone gets hurt. For once, she changes her routine and that is the beginning of a turnaround in her life. The unexpected attraction is a complication that Emily doesn't need in her life. But love is an untamed force you can’t control. Change Of Plans is a beautiful crafted story with interesting characters and definitely recommended.
When the blurb says, "Skye’s ad hoc dirt track intersects with Emily’s carefully paved freeway, their lives are thrown into disarray." I have this image of Skye, the rudeness and careless person ruining Emily's world upside down lol, but it's the opposite; Skye is sweet and thoughtful; it's that kind of character that you will want to have in real life. Both main characters are lovable. I always love characters with good communication.
As for Emily, she totally won my heart, a bonus for her quirky side because it's endearing! I live with a family member who suffers from bipolar for years; even when you're grown up, and that person is no longer in your life, the memories of those insecure moments still frighten me. I feel relative of Emily's struggles and emotions. KJ managing this topic pretty well.
I'm so glad I have chosen to read Change of Plans; it delights my weekend!
Fragility of life can make is so necessary to find a new horizon to grow into as plans change.
I will fail to express the emotions that this story holds for me but I will try. I was graced to read this month's ago when it was a dip for the brilliant KJ. It touched me deeply then I thought but oh my was my heart wrong. This reading has just opened so much. Emily is a woman with a plan for everything that is how she copes with life. Change is not ok but Skye know it is a very real part of life and you have to be able to take care of yourself. These two beautifully strong women are going to collide at the right moment in each other's life. The real joy of this book it to see them each find their way as the plans change. The characters are dynamic, loving, smart and much stronger than they believe themselves to be. As they share their stories with each other such a rich set of emotions become a benchmark for the new horizon they will need to journey if they can stay open to each other. There is a cast of characters that add depth to the story and give laughter, love and must trust to the MC's. I was truely unable to put this book down. I know you will love it and the many truths it brings out.
I‘m a huge fan of KJ‘s writing and don’t think she could ever write something that I don’t love.
It wasn’t any different with this book. From the outside you would think that Emily and Skye are so different that a relationship between them will never work. But sometimes it’s just your polar opposite what you need. It’s what’s going to complete you and fills your life with the things you missed before.
So Emily is used to planning everything in her life even her relationship. She has her reasons and needs this to live. Skye on the other hand is spontaneous and so full of life. From the moment they meet there is this attraction and they are drawn to each other. Always seeing that they actually don’t fit because they are too different. But it’s their differences that draws them in and it’s what making them to get closer until they both experience things they are not used too. Until the moment both change their plans and realise that the most important thing in a relationship is trust. Something I totally can relate to. And in the end it’s not only Emily that has a pattern, it‘s also Skye and they are just perfect for each other.
I highly recommend to read this book for yourself. KJ created another beautiful story that I’m just in awe of. For me she is one of the authors with the most beautiful language. Because I can’t imagine anything in my mind (no persons and no things like a landscape) the language in books is even more important for me. And well she has just a way with words that gives me the possibility to fully know what happens and especially to know what each character feels. So yes I‘m totally in love with her writing. 🥰
Thank you so much KJ for the journey you take us readers with you in every story.
Emily is a planner, everything in her life has always been planned but when her plans start changing beyond her control she is thrown into uncomfortable experience of learning to adapt. Skye’s life couldn’t be more different, nothing every goes to plan and she has learned to embrace the spontaneity life throws her way. When Skye needs a place to stay and Emily has somewhere she can, life throws them together where Skye helps Emily to explore the unexpected twists and turns of life, and Emily helps Skye to rebuild her trust in relationships.
A perfectly sweet opposites attract story with lots of heart, lovely moments, and life lessons. I adored every minute of this story. It had so much heart from the way the characters were both vulnerable but with different insecurities, to learning to trust people to help you in life, whether planned or not. Importantly, KJ used this story to convey the important message that life has a mind of its own and it is going to throw unexpected times at you, whether you plan or not, expect the unexpected.
Emily and Skye had to be the perfect match, the planner who needed help embracing the unexpected and being spontaneous and trusting of the unknown, and the insecurities of never having to be able to trust therefore having to try and adapt to accept help when it is most needed. Fate had a big hand in changing both of their lives, and whilst to the characters it seemed like a disaster, all that was happening and going wrong, it was actually changing their lives for the better. As a point and morals to the story, I just loved that and it is something we should all try and remember more often.
KJ writes books that are passionate and feel-good stories. I have come to love her stories and Change of Plans has to be my favourite yet. There was just so much I could relate to and I could empathise and connect with both characters thoughts and feelings. It was genuinely just a lovely story. Both characters were on a journey and as the reader, I was right there with them on the same journey and learning much from their experiences. I can’t recommend the story enough, I thoroughly enjoyed it and the emotional connection I formed. I am excited to see if there will be more from Skye and Emily in future, as there story as really only just begun!
I’ve been terrible at writing reviews as of late. However, I’m making an exception for this one. I love this book. KJ did such as awesome job developing the characters. I was so invested in their love story. So many books tend to rush quickly into the love parts and building the foundations of a relationship gets skipped over. This book will have you rooting for their love for each other.
KJ also did a great job discussing the underlying issues each main character had and the reasons they came to be. The root cause of trauma and distress is something else that tends to get skipped in books. KJ doesn’t shy away from the mental health issues that should be discussed much more in books.
Thanks to KJ for yet again another amazing read. I can’t wait to see what you come up with next. You are truly a blessing for avid readers like myself.
Change of Plans is a triumphantly tender story of overcoming life’s disappointments and surviving its losses. Mostly, however, it’s about finding peace, acceptance and love in a world that seems hell-bent on stacking the cards against you. This engaging and heartfelt story is absolutely gorgeous and masterfully showcases KJ’s skill as a storyteller. Her ability to write wonderfully complex and heartfelt characters is so nicely demonstrated in this newest piece of fiction.
Emily and Skye are fantastic leads. They are richly layered and beautifully complex. Readers like them and appreciate their flaws as well as their strengths. But, what really resonates with readers is Emily and Skye’s unvarnished vulnerability. They honestly expose themselves and readers connect with that. Their touchingly tender moments are exquisite to experience as a reader.
KJ’s writing style is fresh and vivid. I was continually captivated by the insightfully raw narrative. The storytelling within these pages is nothing short of authentic, moving and real. Thoughts and emotions are brightly illuminated with her word choice and construction. I highlighted so many passages during this read. They were just so poignantly worded; I continually found myself moved. KJ knows how to capture the emotion of a moment so splendidly; she simply puts you there with her words.
The following highlighted excerpt is a perfect example. This scene takes place a few weeks after Skye and Emily meet. Emily is supremely frustrated with things at work, and Skye lends an ear and lets her vent. It’s a lovely scene, and in my opinion, KJ just nails it.
#########
“When I get frustrated, I climb a tree. Want to go climb one of my favourites?” Skye suggested.
Emily tilted her head and looked quizzically at Skye. There was a beat, and their breathing seemed to synchronise. Then she nodded contemplatively. “Okay. Yes. I’ll climb a tree with you.” A slow smile pulled her lips.
**********
The walk to the park was brisk in light of the cool breeze that had picked up…. Eventually, they arrived at the enormous Moreton Bay fig tree at the high point in the park. Skye waved her hand, like a shopping channel presenter. “My thinking tree. One of many in the city, but this one’s my favourite. Don’t tell the others.” She bumped Emily’s shoulder, who laughed.
“It’s a beautiful tree…Okay, where do we start?”
Skye grinned again, then grabbed Emily’s hand. “Let’s go.”
She led Emily around to the other side of the trunk and pointed out the branches that could be used to clamber up. Emily went first and Skye forced her eyes not to stare at her backside because she was supposed to be assisting, not ogling. She followed Emily up until they reached a large, fairly horizontal branch.
“Hang on. We stop here. This is the meditation sorting-things-out branch,” Skye said, and Emily twisted to position herself on the wide limb, scooting over slightly so Skye could fit into the space between her body and the trunk. Then Emily warmed Skye’s arm and thigh when she shuffled sideways again so she could use Skye as a brace. The mechanics of breathing became Skye’s focus for a moment.
They sat in silence for a while.
“I like this,” Emily whispered.
“What part?”
“All of it. The silence. The not-quite silence. It feels like the tree is holding my thoughts for me.”
“It does. Sometimes it’s nice to pass them off for a bit so your head can relax.”
Emily hummed. “True.”
###########
I loved that scene. Readers see a rawness and a youthfulness in these two characters that is usually tucked away from the world at large. It is refreshing to see this other side of them. Skye demonstrates nothing but compassion for Emily. Skye’s a natural fixer, and she longs to offer reassurance and solace to Emily. Emily, on the other hand, is buttoned-up and fearful of change. Emily likes control, and Skye threatens that control—and somehow Skye understands that. But, the most important thing here is this: Emily shows readers she’s capable of letting her guard down and opening herself up to unscripted possibilities. This comes with nurturing patience from Skye, but it does come. With that in mind, this tree becomes symbolic; this is where their relationship takes root.
I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between these two characters. Skye and Emily’s romance builds slowly and organically. It is neither forced or rushed. It feels right. There are times when the characters’ emotions run wild and intense and they are both very reactive to it all, but KJ manages to keep it real. She uses her characters’ honesty, accountability and introspection to keep the romance believable. I bought into it, and I certainly cheered it on. I want it for them because it made sense in their world and mine.
Final remarks…
Change of Plans is a marvelous story. Well-penned and soundly crafted, it is one you will most definitely want to add to your reading list. Skye and Emily are beautiful souls that will make an impression on you. They are ordinary, yet brave women learning to be comfortable with themselves in a cluttered and chaotic world. I will miss them and will need to visit them again someday.
You know those books that end and wish they didn't? You want to see them live their lives and continue to be a part of it? That's this one for me. Its such a compelling romance. KJ does an amazing job with her characters that you just want that connection. She creates growth and understanding. You want to continue to be part of their lives and live in their happiness. KJ thank you for the time spent on this fabulous book.
I just love all of KJ’s books! Change of Plans is awesome 🤩 . It shows how we get so set in our coping strategies that sometimes we lose sight of how absorbed we are in them. So many of us strive to change what happened in childhood and that’s okay.
Emily is a planner and that works for her and Skye tends to rescue others. But when life puts others in our life that changes. this it can be wonderful. KJ does this wonderfully in the story.
I like how KJ put untreated Bipolar Disorder in the story and how it impacts the lives of those around them, but does it in a way that doesn’t make anyone out to be bad. It’s not to easy to recognize when your experiencing it.
Stepping out of your comfort zone is difficult and I think that more than one character did so in this book.
Utterly sweet, deep but not full of drama, the book was good and entertaining. Surprisingly, Emily wasn’t the more messed up character even if, a priori, she was but all the”unsteady “ moments came from Skye and I didn’t see that coming. And it was Emily who kept a cool head and solved what she could or said what it needed to be said. I didn’t fall in love with the book and there was something missing for me...maybe the fact that I thought Emily was going to be more unattainable and I love the drama a situation like that can bring but it was missing here so it all felt “simpler”. All in all I enjoyed it, the writing is good and the characters interesting so this one is my first from the author but not the last.
Really liked the descriptions. I could see the settings. A lot of initials used initially, like CBD, which I know but others might not, CAD which I didn’t know. That’s it. That’s it, that’s all I could criticise. I read the main interactions with a smile on my face. The interactions with secondary characters lived and did not feel like fillers. I like both these mains as individuals and I like them as a couple. The little bits of background that explain why they are how they are are well done. The little clues to the rocks that are going to path the rocky road ahead are being nicely laid. The cement to go between the rocks and smooth the bumps so we have a resolution are also really nicely laid. Great job KJ.
This story gives good insight into some of the many ways mental health can affect family members' actions, and the ways affected persons struggle to find coping mechanisms in attempts to balance chaotic family dynamics. The understanding, support, and courtesy between the MCs showed how people who truly cared about each other could make accommodations for each person without sacrificing their own needs and without being resentful about making those accommodations. The author's writing style is unique and always entertains the reader with the characters' 'inside thoughts' in a way that doesn't disrupt the narrative. Despite tackling some serious topics, this book is a fun, enjoyable read. Well done!
This book was pure pleasure to read. Made up of interesting characters in the two MC's and the rest of the cast, quirky and multi-layered a pleasure to get to know. Deeper themes than are found often in the romance genre leaving you with something to mull over and think about once it is done.
KJ writes funny dialogue and the book made me snort and laugh out loud at several points whilst also containing passages that were deeply moving. I really enjoyed this novel and know it will be one I revisit in the future.
The book is very Australian and I love that about KJ she is not afraid to introduce or interrogate issues that are distinctly from here but have a much wider application.
This is so KJ writing at its best. The slow burn of strong characters with depth to them. Skye and Emily are two strong willed people who have issues dictated from their past at the hands of their parents. They are brought together with the intention of them helping each other out. Emily becoming a landlord and was putting a dent in her plans. Skye was so busy trying to pick herself off the ground after a heavy financial lost. Both not realizing they needed each other. The story unfolds as these two are navigating around their feelings for each other. Someone has to push forward but with their past history, can either one make that attempt. Classic KJ........
This was a really well crafted book. The characters, their backgrounds and stories are written in such a way that you become engrossed in the progression of their lives. I really enjoyed the interplay between characters. When the story begins I felt so annoyed by Emily, but as you discover who she is, she becomes endearing. Loved the slow burn between Skye and Emily, and I liked that you didn’t make it easy. I was really surprised to find this book, absolutely would recommend.
I was enthralled with the characters from the start...their pasts and how they affected their current lives, their coping mechanisms they thought were helping but really just kept holding them back. I love it when I read a novel and can relate enough to the characters and story yet they're different enough to keep me interested. Emily and Skye were those for me. Thank you to KJ for creating another brilliant novel! I always learn about something new in her novels. This time Ikebana!
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would when I first started it, so if you are bogged down at the beginning, hang in there and keep reading. I really appreciate an author who takes the time to let you learn about how her characters came to be the people that they are, instead of just saying one MC is a control freak and the other is a semi space cadet. I really came to understand where Emily and Skye were coming from, and what led them both to open their hearts to something different. I am a tough reviewer, so four stars from me is rare!
I felt filled and good after reading this book. And there are many reasons for that. Perhaps in one word I'd say it was a wholesome read. I love the way it starts by having us (readers) be acquainted with each of the primary characters and gradually direct it to their meet and budding relationship. The witty dialogue and characters, the therapy dialogues, the introduced music (of which I am listening to one right now) and perhaps most importantly the way the author painted their togetherness and their misunderstandings were all really well done.
I absolutely adore KJ's Books. KJ herself is an extraordinary human being too. Her writing is always of the highest quality. I love how this 1 deals with mental health issues and anxiety (friends of mine) but still has all the real life, funny, sweet, complicated, hot (i'll never view brushing hair the same again!) feels her work always does. Oh and leta not forget great side characters too! Coming Home will probably always be my fav KJ but this was another smash hit and KJ is still 1 of my fav authors.
