Surviving Pet Loss, is a self-help guide for those affected by pet bereavement. Grieving over a much loved pet can be a long and often lonely experience. This book will help you identify those overwhelming emotions and look at ways to help you through the grieving process and adjust to a ‘new’ life without your pet.
Author Dawn Murray has nearly two decades of supporting pet carers pre, during and post the loss of their pets, both as a pet bereavement counsellor and a pet undertaker. She is one of the most experienced and successful pet bereavement counsellors in the UK, and for the first time she has shared her own moving experiences of pet bereavement.
“Coping with the loss of a pet is an event that takes many people by surprise. Surprise at the level of grief they experience. Surprise that they can't 'just get over it'. Surprise that they may need to take time off work and surprise that other people just don't seem to understand the depth of pain they are feeling. Dawn Murray has some wise words for anyone going through the trauma of pet loss and this is a book that will provide a lot of comfort for people at a time when they will most certainly need it.” - K9 Magazine – Ryan O’Meara & Accomplished Author
“As a Military Working Dog Handler, I have taken more than my fair share of loyal companions on their final journey. I have also done the same with pet animals. One thing I do know is that it never gets easier. I will often find one of my companions springing into my mind from nowhere. Sometimes happy memories, often sad. I have found Dawns’ book both insightful and taken some great tips to help both now and in the future. As one of the quotes states; ‘it’s your grief and yours alone’. Remember that in all walks of life.” - RAF Flight Lieutenant Michael ‘Will’ Barrow Author of Buster
''What a fantastic little book!!! The loss of a pet and ultimately a companion can be devastating and very traumatic. The book will help those who have suffered a loss understand the process of loss, bereavement and grieving. As Dawn 'Loss, bereavement and grief are all part of our journey through life and although we have to face the journey alone, we can and do recover.' This book will definitely help those who have lost a beloved pet understand the journey that they are going to go on, from loss to ultimately acceptance'' - Dr Peter Du Toit
This short book was really helpful. I was able to recognise the symptoms of my grief but also realised the one feeling I couldn't name was in fact my own personal pain response to my grief. I liked that Dawn had include a few personal experiences at the end of the book but most it was about the grieving process in relation to pets. It was clear that every experience is different and there is no right way to grieve or deal with the loss of a pet. Dawn's words are comforting and her style is gentle.
