What is this “love” everyone talks about? Viola doesn’t yet know. But it is a question she is asking herself more and more, because at her age there are some kinds of problems you feel even in the air that you breathe: your self-image and the way you think others see you, the relationship between you and your body and the other gender, couple issues, the freedom to follow your aspirations, and the need to fit in socially accepted categories. On vacation with her parents, during the idle hours of the afternoon while everyone is sleeping, Viola’s encounters and experiences will help her grow as a person and get answers to the hard questions that everyone has to face sooner or later, and she will reshape her identity, in a summer she’ll never forget.

Tocou-me várias vezes, apanhou-me desprevenido e derrubou algumas das minhas defesas emocionais.

--

EN This is one of those books I had a good feeling about even before I started reading it — and it didn’t disappoint. In fact, it exceeded all my expectations and turned out to be even better than I had imagined.

At its core, this is a book about love — in all its many forms. The stormy love of a couple who have been together for years, the love of a mother that can sometimes be cruel in its intensity, the shallow love of a womaniser, the pure and innocent love of someone falling for the first time, the eternal love of someone watching their soulmate slip away… It’s all here.

It’s also a book filled with valuable insights and different perspectives on the subject. It caught me off guard more than once and broke through my emotional defences. There are harsh passages, deeply sad moments, and even some that are a bit infuriating — but it’s a story that resonates, especially with those who have loved, lost, or seen others get lost in love.

Because love is always worth it — even when it hurts.

Coming of age stories are the bread and butter of graphic novels - I have read a lot of them. A lot. And so we come to Forever, which is another coming of age story.

It ticks all the boxes. And it wants to tick all of them, ALL possible coming of age boxes. A LOT is crammed into this book, so much that it feels unnatural and overstuffed. There's a lot of things happening as B-stories, sometimes underserving them. There is a girl whose boyfriend emotionally and psychologically abuses her - we check in with them regularly during the book, but then the outcome is handled off-page. That feels too serious a subject to handle it that way.

The main story of a girl on vacation with her parents, finding her first love, finding her place in her group of friends, is fine. It is aggressively okay. It is nothing special. Most of it has been done before, and more convincingly.

The art has a nice breeziness to it, which I enjoyed.

Forever by Assia Petricelli is a remarkable summer time read which explores love. Through Viola's character, the book helps the readers explore romantic as well as platonic love.

In many ways I felt nostalgic while reading through this beautifully illustrated novel. It brought back memories from when I was a teenager and was still discovering what love meant to me. Through this book it is reiterated that love to many means different things.

The best part about the novel is that it isn't preachy in terms of what love should be and the characters included to highlight them felt so real. The illustrations perfectly added to the reading experience and held my interest throughout.

When I initially started the novel, I feared it might be a problematic book with some of the terms used and even feared that the relationships shown might be toxic too. But the author has done a phenomenal job of tying all loose ends and took the opportunity to briefly touch on issues like consent, using protection and unhealthy relationships.

Personally, I would have preferred a different ending to Viola and Ireneo's relationship but it also aptly shows how much Viola had grown since the beginning of summer. Lastly, I loved Viola's shared relationship with Lili and Paola so so much!!

I rate the book 5 out of 5 bookmarks for the constant smile on my face, the beach vibes and the beautiful depiction of the many forms of love. Highly recommend it!

I’d like to thank NetGalley and Europe Comics for providing me with an eARC of the book to review. I’d also like to congratulate the author - Assia Petricelli - and illustrator – Sergio Riccardi – on their new book which came out earlier in April, 2021.

It’s been some time since I read a graphic novel that was bittersweet, talked about young love, and growing up. “Forever” by Assia Petricelli is all of these and more. Viola is on her first summer vacation away from home with her family. Her friends Renata and Valeria are also holidaying in the same beachside place that she is at. The story then follows the girls’ experiences through the summer which alternatively teaches them to be strong yet vulnerable.

Viola is the typical teenager constantly questioning the things around her and herself. She is part of the group yet different from them. I loved how the book treats so many aspects with great sensitivity and acceptance – identity, gender, freedom, individuality, the meaning of love, family.
These themes are vividly supported with the absorbing artwork with its bold lines and deep, rich colour palette.

And the beach vibe! Oh, I longed for the beach and the sea. The lazy afternoons when the world escapes into a siesta, and everything is quiet, and all you see is the shimmering heat.
This was a wholesome read for me. A coming-of-age tale wrapped in the warmth of summer love.

Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for the ARC.

This was such a heartwarming story. I loved the art and it complimented the story narration beautifully. It steps into the territory of love and questions it - what is love? Is it jealousy? Does it have to be physical? The MC asks these. I loved following along with the journey on their vacation. A new romance, new experience, new unlikely friendships - a beautiful memory. If they wrote a full fledged novel on this, I'd 10/10 would love to read it!!

I loved the art style and the depiction of first love but some things really needed to be fleshed out way more, it felt too surface level. Although I did shed a tear there

A coming of age, summer vacation story about sexuality, young love, friendship, & identity.

[What I liked:]

•I like the movement in the art style. There are some creative panels/pages with borders, showing background music, & ones that look like journal entries or letters. The colors are vibrant, like I’d imagine southern Italy to be like.

•The story touches on consent, unhealthy & healthy relationships, parent-teen relationships, etc. without being didactic. It was interesting to see Viola, the MC, engaging with the thoughts & views of others & over time processing & synthesizing (or rejecting) them to build her own views of love.

•The story is very touching, especially Viola’s friendship with Lili & Paola, & her relationship with Ireneo. I think the ending is very fitting, a good note to end on that gives closure & shows how much Viola has grown.

[What I didn’t like as much:]

•At the very end, Viola says in a letter that the summer changed her whole family, but it’s not clear how it affected anyone but her. I needed some more clarity on that. I’m also not clear on why she decided not to keep in touch with Ireneo.

CW: jealous/controlling relationship, physically abusive relationship, controlling/abusive parents, terminal illness, doctor assisted death

[I received an ARC ebook copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. Thank you for the book!]

I had one morning with this book, and I ended up reading it all before work, and it's such a good slice of life book, and with that meaning of it all as well, of just a moment being able to matter just as much!!!
This is set in small Italy town during Summer holidays and it really explores how each person is going through their own thing, how the face we put to the world isn't always what we feel - the fights between Viola and her mom and her friend's feelings about her body rang so close to home!! - then I also really liked the arc with the older women - love and grief together are themes I love and break my heart!!! - and I really like the notes of the arc with the mother, and with the brother.
I also really enjoyed the criticism of tourism in Italy, the feeling for the locals to have your town overrun with tourists in the summer, and the town losing its own history and reality in favor of tourism and hospitality.
This is truly a beautiful and worthwhile read!!! Thematically it reminds me of the French series, Verões Felizes 1: Rumo ao Sul A Calheta, but this one worked better for me!!!

Demasiado realista. Demasiado duro.

“Maybe this is what “love is forever” means: it’s not timeless, but it leaves a mark so deep that it accompanies us all our life.”

It was a nice quick read! I liked it and the drawings were nice :)
It wasn't really long but it managed to talk about some pretty relevant subjects. Among others: emotional abuse, sex, misogyny, identity and not-so-great relationships with family. However, I felt that it didn't focus as much on them as I would have liked and it didn't went in depth in any of them. Regardless, I enjoyed the story and how the MC changed a bit from start to finish.

This was such a pleasant read while talking about issues that are so important, especially for people just starting to explore relationships and love and their sexuality.

The visuals are stunning (ref: forest and field scenes) and the colours in the book transport you to Italy immediately.

Welcome Back!

This month has been a big reading month for me, and it is definitely not over (I still have like eight days)! Thus far I have read ten books (and I am working on books 11 and 12 currently). I have been trying to mix it up more this month and pick up a bunch of graphic novels, audio books, ebooks, and physical reads. So after finishing a novel (and the end of a trilogy that I love so much) I decided to jump into a graphic novel. Something to help change things up before jumping into a new novel but also something I could finish in a day. So I looked through my shelves (I have some manga and graphic novels I could pick up), Hoopla, and then Netgalley. Once I logged into Netgalley I found Forever! I was super intrigued by this one, so I decided why not read this one next!

SPOILERS AHEAD

Viola is going on a summer trip with her family, and she is not what would be called excited. However, that changes as Viola starts to enjoy her time on the trip and one day meets a boy who is working on a boat. She starts talking with him and the next thing you know they are spending time together every day at the same time. Viola has never been in love but she is pretty sure she has feelings for this guy. As vacation progresses, Viola spends more and more time with him and she definitely knows she loves him and he loves her. Eventually, vacation is going to end and Viola will go home. But what does going home mean for Viola now?

I really enjoyed my time with this graphic novel. I did not really have any expectations about the story when I went in (I had not really read a summary or anything before reading) but it was such a good story and the ending broke my heart. Additionally, I enjoyed the art style of this graphic novel, the sharp lines and the colors helped to really bring Viola’s story to life. Overall, I enjoyed my time with Viola and her summer vacation adventure!

A simple and quick read that touches different issues through the eyes of a teenager on vacation.
This summer will allow Viola to better understand who she is and what love and relationships mean.
The story is sweet and moving, albeit a bit too fast. I would have loved for some topics and characters to be explored deeper. For example, I feel that a window was opened with the character of Viola's mother and further exploration would have enriched the story.

The book reminded me of all those Italian summers spent at the camping resort as a teenager. The first crushes, the need for freedom and discovery, the nights spent at the beach.
I particularly loved the characters of Paola and Lili, the lesbian couple who teaches Viola and her friends what love and, most importantly, self-love and respect are.

This was a cute and quick read! I liked the main story and the characters and thought the ending was beautiful. My only issue with this book (the reason why I rated it 3 stars) is that I thought it tried to discuss a too wide range of topics. Even though I really appreciate it when books discuss important topics, this book took on too many, which resulted in some of them not getting enough attention. The book discussed love, self-image, abuse, gender roles, sickness, loss/grief. Some of these topics were worked out really well, but some of them, like gender roles, were only briefly mentioned throughout the book. I would've liked it better if the book had been longer so all of these topics had got the attention they deserve. For this small book, I think it would've worked better to focus on a smaller range of topics. Still, I really enjoyed the read and, as I said before, I do really appreciate authors trying to discuss important topics!

Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for providing me with an e-arc. This did not affect the honesty of my review in any way.

5/5 for realistic depictions of women's bodies.

I had reservations when I began reading this that the love depicted in this graphic novel was going to be toxic, and not well rounded.

This is not the case. The bad relationships are depicted as such, and the relationships that are healthy stress what help makes them work and what makes them shine.

This was a beautiful story about love and loss.

It is also gay on the side and it SLAPS!

This quote summarizes the whole book:
"... this is what "love is forever" means: its not timeless but it leaves a mark so deep that it accompanies us all our life"

Gostei.

This is a poignant tale of summer love at the seaside; about growing up, and finding peace with yourself; about teenage angst and first loves.

The story will resonate with most teens and I found it to be a well-told story, by the narrative as well as the illustrations.
