I actually had to stop reading at points because it was so fucking adorable that I wanted to squee and bang my head against a wall just to calm myself down. This is easily one of my favorite series of all time and easily my favorite series this year. The characters are fun and endearing without being annoying, the world is super interesting and has a healthy balance of creepy and awe-inspiring, and the artwork is SPECTACULAR. Seriously, the artwork works so well with this serie's tone, atmosphere, and world it's scary (haha, get it? I'm so funny).
Meeting Tsuchigomori was great and I adore his character, we got some great worldbuilding tidbits that clarify some of the questions I had, and learning more about Hanako was exciting yet heartbreaking. And that cliffhanger. Guys, these cliffhangers are going to be the death of me, I need volume 4 RIGHT NOW!
Seriously though, this is such an awesome series and I highly recommend everyone try it out. It has such a great balance of creepy, fun, and adorable that I feel like anyone would enjoy this. Please try this if you can, it's definitely worth it.
This volume was fantastic! Fast-paced, charming and equal parts hilarious and heart-rending. I devoured this! In this instalment we learn quite a bit about Hanako-Kun’s backstory which is surprising considering it’s volume 3 in a 16? part series??!
I also loved Tsuchigomori - the curator of the 4pm bookstacks! I adored him in the anime so it wasn’t surprising he captured my heart in the manga too <3
I think Hanako kun’s backstory is going to be incredibly upsetting and I know Tsuchigomori has been there from the beginning so obviously he knows what happened to the titular character. I think when this is finally revealed, I just won’t be able to quell the flood of tears which are mounting deep within me.
"Even if no one else would ever forgive them…even if there's no way to justify it…I forgive them."
Man, those words hit me HARD when I read that! I honestly was so taken aback and teared up because, in the past, forgiveness was a VERY hard thing I wrestled with when it came to toxic family members who hurt my family. Hearing this character say these words with the expression on their face was extremely powerful and left me wanting to get this volume for my own collection (I'm borrowing this volume from my library) because my whole view changed of this character. I won't say who it is or say anything else, but I think that was the moment that I really wanted to get the boxed set.
Outside of that specific scene, I LOVED this volume! I know it's the last day of February, but this was definitely among my favorite reads this month! I love love love LOVEEEEE School Mystery No. 5!!!! He is AMAZINGGGG and could not get enough of him! I was absolutely giddy that he had such a HUGE focus for almost the entirety of this volume because YESSSSSSS!! Lots of good humor but also some very heart moving moments with this mystery. SUPER hoping he will continue to play a large role in this series because I'll be heartbroken if I don't see him again! LOL!
The ending as always was a HUGE cliffhanger and I'm like WHY DIDN'T MY LIBRARY HAVE VOLUME FOUR?!?! They only had volume five and I'm already desperate for answers!!
I currently have the boxed set open on another webpage because I have deeply enjoyed these past three volumes and want more! It's been such an unexpected wonderful journey but these characters have a grip on my heart and I don't want to let them go OR them let me go! Never would have expected I would love this series as much as I am!
I'm really starting to like this. I didn't expect to find out so much from Hanako's past so soon. It makes me wonder what more this series has in store.
In this volume of Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, we move into the 4pm Bookstacks chapters (I’m just going to call it chapters from now on), where we meet the curator of school mystery five, Tsuchigomori. With school mystery five (The 4pm Bookstacks), they archive the lives of people from the past, present, and future. Tsuchigomori notes that the future cannot be changed, but there has been one person that has been able to change their future, which is none other than Hanako-kun. We learn some more about Hanako-kun’s past life as a human and his connection to Tsuchigomori when Nene gets rid of the yorishiro in the bookstacks. As a result, Nene’s relationship with Hanako-kun becomes a little awkward, which leads us into the donuts chapter, where she makes donuts with Kou in order to cheer Hanako-kun up. At the end, a mysterious figure shows up before Hanako-kun and Nene on the roof of the school.
I like that in this volume, we finally start getting a little more information on Hanako-kun and his past life. It raises even more questions, such as who was bullying him and who did he end up killing along with why. The whole memory that arises between Tsuchigomori and Hanako-kun when Nene gets rides of the yorishiro just screams somber and melancholic and it makes your heart break when you see the state that Hanako-kun is in and you can feel the weight of his words. And now with the appearance of the new character (I started freaking out because I already know who it is and this new person is going to cause some serious problems here on out), things are only to get more intense from here on out.

Aaaaahhh I love the backstory of Hanako-kun!! Him loving donuts and the stars was something I do too before even reading this manga so he is my favourite character! I never related so much with any other character before. This volume was the moment I knew it will be my all-time favourite manga. Thank you Aida and Iro for making this book!

General Comments: Toilet-bound Hanako-kin is translated by Square Enix and Co; story by Iro and illustrated by Aida. This is Volume 3. Reviewing Manga is complicated; reviewing each volume - individually- does not reflect the overall enjoyment of the series. As such, the star-rating should be utilised as a guideline only. If anything, you should pick up Toilet-bound Hanako-kun. The intent of this work is to recall Japanese Tales from Folklore and Mythology, using the contrasting genres of horror and comedy. See Volume 1 for a more personal review.

Haven’t devoured a manga this fast in a long while 🥹💖 I’m so in love with everything! This volume has just the right amount of humour, adorableness and hint of a tragic backstory (づ ᴗ _ᴗ)づ♡ I think my most favourite parts are Hanako being clingy over Nene and Kou catching feelings for Nene as well–I get it guys, she’s adorable ૮₍ ´ ꒳ `₎ა and learning about Hanako loving doughnuts!!! My baby boi I’ll give you all the doughnuts in the world 💖💖💖
We’re inching closer to learning something important about Hanako’s past, and I’m not sure if my heart is ready. The trio are just starting to get closer with each other so I hope whatever’s coming next will not be too painful or sad for any of them.
Anyway, that’s it. This is how much I need to read to want to buy the illustration book(s) for this series because eXCUSE ME? EVERY SINGLE THING IS SO GORGEOUS 😭🩷🩷✨
Okay for real though I didn't expect to like this series as much as I do! It's so lighthearted in a weird horror sort of way haha. I hope my local Target will get more of these volumes in because I would love to keep on reading this series!
The world-building and atmosphere of this series are top-notch, especially considering just how how many supernatural manga there are out there! And the characters are just so lovable, the art is impeccable whether it’s being serious or dramatic or humorous, and the mysteries building in the story are really compelling. This is just one of those manga I would recommend to people who may think they have seen it all when it comes to manga but want to be surprised and entertained alike.
