A tiny kitten. One adorable judgemental wolfhound. A wedding to be planned. Niall recovering from his sappiness at the end of book #2 and finding back to his usual grumpy self. A match made in heaven with amazing relationship development. Endearing side characters. Not to forget one corpse, two corpse, old corpse, new corpse as promised in the blurb...

... and Simone is a happy camper!

Loose ends have been tied up. Well, kinda... sorta. And that's more or less the only thing that made me grumble a bit: Not everything has been resolved, but I guess (read: hope!) that's stuff for the upcoming spin-off. Speaking of... The case/conclusion in this story builds on the events in the Accidental Roots series. I don't think you would be overly lost if you haven't read it like lucky-me, but you might wonder about all these people suddenly invading the island. ;-)

Black Moon is book 3 in the Hamarsson & Dempsey trilogy, and probably my favorite. I normally like one MC over the other, but in this series, I ended up loving both Mat and Niall. To see the transformation of Niall from book 1, being a broken and cold man, to book 3 where he is trusting and loving. He still has some rough edges, but it warmed my heart much he evolved, not only personally, but also with his relationship with Mat.

In book 3, the mystery that started in book 1 is finally wrapped up. I was a little upset because at one point, the author was throwing characters into the story and I was thinking what the heck. By the end, I was a happy camper.

Definitely one of my favorites of the year and a must read.

This series is way too short, but luckily the characters from Elle Keaton's other books set in the same general area of Washington state keep reappearing...so there are always familiar friends. Niall and Mat are trying to get married, but explosions and dead bodies keep getting in their way. This is definitely a romantic suspense story and Niall and Mat are one of my all-time favorite couples. The first two books introduced the two character and gave them depth. it also pathed the path to get them together, Now they just have to learn how to be a couple. Niall can’t quite give up his "do it by myself" investigating attitude, even when he doesn't need to. Mat wants to wrap Naill in bubble wrap and put him in a cupboard and lock the door...but he understands that is just the way this big Norseman that has just become his fiancé, is...and it's useless to try and change him. Mat is the sheriff of the Piedras Island community where everybody knows everybody and will always put differences aside and gather together in time of trouble. Mat is determined to keep his little paart of the world safe, and it doesn't matter that Naill has also had thoughts about how to keep Mat safe..."wrap him up like a burrito", I believe is how he phrased his idea. Ms. Keaton has created two wonderful, interesting, adorable, sexy, sweet characters. They argue sometimes but they are honest about all their insecurities, and they are respectful of the choices that they each make. There is always a mystery in each book, Mystery and adventure play a huge role in this series. It seems at times, that there are more dead bodies on the island than living ones. Anyone that wants a good "who done it" will get their money's worth here. Elle Keaton introduces these new mysteries to Piedras Island and then expertly weaves them into the storyline. The suspense builds slowly and every piece of the puzzle links together, until suddenly you find yourself in the middle of one of the best romance and mystery stories you could ever want.

There is nothing better than getting back with an established couple tying loose ends and getting their happy ever after. Mat and Niall are in love, living together and getting ready to tie the knot. Both have jobs they enjoy and family who loves them. What could possibly happen? Elle Keaton brings a tight mystery that unearths some deep skeletons and secrets everyone has forgotten and by chance helps bring a devious criminal to justice.

I loved Niall all mushy and sweet with Mat. He didn't say much but when he did, OMG, it was toe curling good. Mat gave as good as he got. They are like two peas in the pod - perfect partners to have each others back and gentle and passionate lovers at home. I enjoyed their new found domesticity. Fenrir was such a good doggo!

The case was rather good. Mat and Niall were slowly putting clues together when the author decided to add an extra layer and angle of complexity. This particular book was a crossover with her well known series Accidental Roots and featured some of well known FBI agents from Skagit dipping their toes into the island of Piedras's waters. It added the element of surprise and danger. I enjoyed how well they worked together. Overall, I was very satisfied the direction the story took and how it ended - Mat and Niall were happy and there were no floating bodies in sight. All was right with their world. Copy received for my honest review

This series clearly didn't end with a bang but petered out... What a bummer. The mystery/investigation sides still follows threads from book 1 but honestly by the end of it we have more questions than answers. We know the who (mostly) but not really the why. There have been numerous murders by now and they are "solved" but not really, not for sure. Not all the threads were linked (which could have been fine) but some were just dropped/forgotten. The romance side: no real progression here. The MCs are living together and about to get married when the book starts and that's that. Same for the character development, there wasn't really any and I still don't feel I know those guys after 3 books. I doubt I'll read anything else by this author. Onto the next.

Black Moon is the third installment in the Hamarsson and Dempsey series by Elle Keaton. It takes place in the early fall following Niall and Mat’s summer engagement and picks up immediately with Mat discovering Duane Cooper to be dead. The story is divided into chapters that alternate in third-person from both Mat’s and Niall’s perspective. For a thriller, I think this arrangement works well. It also keeps the action at pretty consistently high levels. Both Niall and Mat engage in dangerous jobs. Niall is just starting to get assignments through the private investigation firm where he works, which has taken him away to Idaho. Mat’s job as sheriff and his unflagging sense of responsibility for everything that happens on the island keep him very busy. There is some discussion about Niall’s good-intentioned “interference” in Mat’s official role as a LEO. Most of the time, though, Niall seems to ignore the legality or lack thereof of interfering as he is more concerned with being personally able to keep Mat safe. As a suspense, I think Keaton does a fine job of continuing threads from the first two books.

Solid ending to Mat and Niall's story. They have good chemistry and a sweet story. There is a mystery that's slowly being wrapped up. Most of the characters are who you'd think they'd be with no real surprises. I'm still suspish on that lady who
ANYHOOO.... the book was fine I like the author okay. I think it's a solid world with interesting enough characters. Not blow your socks off, but a solid read. I'll definitely keep this author on the back burner for when I was a basic mystery with some spice.

Perfect last book to this series. The mystery, which already started in book one is finally solved, all loose ends tied up.
Great character development, especially the transition of Niall from a grumpy loner to a loving partner, a solid part of a family and with good friends.
Loved it!

I breezed through the first two books in this series, but got a little stuck here. Now that the tension between these two has passed, I was less invested. It was still a good read, although I found the mystery a bit convoluted, and it also just felt like a lot of unnecessary things were happening. That said, I enjoyed the few pages Mat and Niall spent together very much. Not a bad series overall, I wonder if the spinoffs are any good?

This is a likable series and sometimes it a relief to read something angst free. Everything that's been going on got it's explanation in this #3 installement. I am a bit curious about Niall's mother's disappearance though and I read it's going to be explained in the #4.

Well I read all 4 of these books in a row so I am going to just give a little bit what I think of each book without going into it. For some reason in these MM romances about cops or detectives, they never really care about putting together a wedding . I will never understand that but hey I am also stressed about planning my own right now and it makes me wanna run away. Anyways another mystery unsolved by yours truly and more relationship building. Anyways these are more books about two men living their lives and loving each other while all this crime fighting goes on, which is fine by me. I found it entertaining and I think its my favorite of the 4 books actually. I really enjoyed it!

This was a good conclusion to Niall and Mat although I wish we would've had more of their relationship. This was heavy on the case and at times it felt almost like it was just never going to end. It started to get overly complicated and had that ridiculous feeling. It wasn't hard to guess some of it because well like I said, it was like we had to throw everything into one bucket.

I did like seeing Niall and Shay's relationship grow. Niall is really a caring person to those he loves even though he doesn't think he shows it. Mat is really his perfect match.

Overall it was a good series.

You have to suspend reality with their law enforcement techniques but this was still enjoyable. A nice finish to the series and some cross over characters from the author's Accidental Roots series. Entertaining and easy to read. Available on KU

This is the third in a series that reads like an explicit cozy - there's lots of m/m sex, and both MC's are in the police/police adjacent so it's not really a cozy but the mysteries are so jumbled and solved in such weird way, it reads like a cozy.

In the first book, the mystery dominated and was sort of resolved, but not really. By book three, while the mystery moves the plot, the relationship is given just as much time. I found that while I was comfortable with the characters and the environment, I wasn't really engaged with the mystery and so the book didn't really work for me. I like the universe well enough, but the writing jarred every so often and it was too easy to put the book down and not rush to finish it.

I rate it a B

A thrilling conclusion to the trilogy!

Black Moon has it all. Suspense, murder, romance, nail-biting events, sexy time and humor. I love it when an author can craft a story that contains so many different elements. I've been hooked on this series from the first book. You really do need to read it in publication order to fully enjoy the series.

There are so many different things going on in this story. It speaks to Elle's skill as a writer that she was able to pull it off and keep things straight (OK, a lot of the characters aren't straight-lol). Towards the end there were a lot of characters interacting with each other but it never seemed confusing to me.

Never once did I suspect that things would turn out the way they did for a few characters – another sign of great writing. This was truly an engaging book with the added bonus of a couple of animals who were scene stealers. 😊

Fans of Elle's Accidental Roots books will be happy to see a few characters from that series popup in this story. I don't know anything, but it seemed to me like Black Moon introduced at least one character, and maybe more, who needs to get a book of their own. Maybe a new series is coming? ❤

I'm a bit sad to see this trilogy come to an end but Niall and Mat deserved to finally get their HEA and I loved everything about this final book. The only thing that could make this story better for me would be to listen to Michael Dean perform it and I'm pretty sure that's coming sometime next year. ❤

A copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

I so enjoyed this third book in the series. I love dual POV as we get into each of their heads. In this book we have Niall off on an assignment & it wouldn't be a Hamarsson & Dempsey book without someone getting hurt. Oh Niall. We have the prior investigation of a string of murders still on-going in this book. Mat wants nothing but Niall to rest & recuperate, but of course Niall being Niall, he doesn't. We have the appearance of the FBI to help with the finalization of the investigation into several deaths & there wasn't a hint of what that final outcome winded up being. Even though I sometimes have the who/why figured out prior to the end of the book/series, I so didn't here. The author kept you guessing until the end. I love that these two have such a strong bond, and even if they do get angry with each other, they talk and work things out. I love Fenrir & he ends up finding someone that will make a great addition to their family.

I fear that Black Moon, by Elle Keaton, is the conclusion for Mat Dempsey and Niall Hamarsson and I, for one, will miss these guys and their outrageous adventures on the San Juan Island of Piedras. What began with Conspiracy Theory and continued in Long Shadow has been one hella romance backlit by a string of homicides in this remote island town. Black Moon is definitely not a standalone in the Hamarsson & Dempsey series.

Mat and Niall are back. In love, living together, planning to replace the yurt with a new cabin, and engaged to be married. Niall is away on his first assignment with West Coast Forensics (WCS) which puts Niall’s life in jeopardy. Meanwhile, Mat has another dead body on his hands; and this one threatens to challenge the past, with ramifications that could tarnish the precious memories of Mat’s father.

Back in the beginning, Niall was strong willed, closed off, and brash while Mat was a happy, caring and giving man. To some extent, they haven’t changed one bit as the series has progressed. Matt is still the same man, generous and devoted to those he serves. But being understaffed, with a string of murders, is taking its toll. He’s literally worn-out and exhausted. When it comes to Niall, Mat broke through his defenses, turning him into a lovesick puppy with a protective streak a mile wide, but only in Mat’s presence.

Following them, their different investigative skills, intense feelings for each other, reactions to situations and each other, only increases the impact as it captures the complete focus of the reader.

This dual point of view, between Mat and Niall, is a constant throughout the entire series. Following them, their different investigative skills, intense feelings for each other, reactions to situations and each other, only increases the impact as it captures the complete focus of the reader. It feels like you are in the yurt with them, navigating the small Piedras police office, or attending the touching family moments.

Black Moon brings with it the return of Fenrir, Niall’s beast of an Irish wolfhound. But this time Fenrir gets a new friend in a tiny kitten, Hel – adorable! Also, involved are Alyson Dempsey, Mat’s mom, Riley, Mat’s niece, Niall’s half-brother, Shay Delacombe, and Dr. Marshall Soper. Birdy Flynn is a constant as Mat’s right-hand deputy. The WCF brings aboard Leo Zelinsky and Ryder Mann, who get on Niall’s nerves; but secretly he really does like them. FBI favorites from Skagit join the team, with Soren Jorgensen who wants to join the Piedras PD. There you have it; one hell of a support system and team has been assembled to bring justice and resolve the string of murders plaguing Piedras which stem from actions that began a decade or so ago.

I have enjoyed the entire series, each book for different reasons, but Black Moon is my favorite. Probably because we jump right in with our favorite mismatched couple. Loose ends are tied up and closure is found, with a happy future on the horizon for Mat and Niall as well as the residents of Piedras.

I love this series, and am sad that this is the final book, although I’m hoping to get glimpses of these guys in future stories. As with the first two books, this one kept me turning pages, and trying to figure out what was going on. It’s a wonderful mix of action, drama, detective, and romance.

I fell in love with Mat and Niall in book 1, and I was very happy that they finally got their happily ever after, although of course they very nearly didn’t, and had to work for it! These guys seem to attract explosions, whether it be jeeps or buildings.

I liked how the title of the book plays in. I’d never heard of a Black Moon before so enjoyed the explanation. The author does a fabulous job in working all the threads of the mystery together, while building the tension, and keeping the reader—and Niall and Mat—guessing.

I love the small community feel of Piedras, and its inhabitants. The description of Hidden Harbour is fabulous, and very emotive.

Fenrir needs a special mention, not only for looking out for Mat as well as Niall, but the adorable kitten scene. Ignoring the bad guy with the gun, as... kitten! I got very excited when Adam from Accidental Roots turned up, and that the next book will be a sort of crossover between the two series. I like Soren already, so want to read his story. I enjoyed seeing the other regulars of this series too, and liked that Niall is slowly building a friendship with Shay. I love Marshall, and Birdy and Allyson rock. Niall’s ex is a nasty individual, and comes across as having no redeeming features what-so-ever.

The epilogue was very satisfying, and perfect for these guys, and the end of a series I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and is going on my want in paperback collection.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Black Moon is the third book in Hamarsson & Dempsey series. I love it when an author writes about the same couple in a series so we can see them not only wooing each other be getting together and having some happiness and that is what we get with this series.

Matt and Niall are living together and planning a wedding when another body turns up in the harbour. So, as with the previous books we get romance and murder mystery. A mystery that sees Niall against sticking his nose in where he technically shouldn’t be. He knows he shouldn’t but does it anyway. Just thinking about it makes me smile. But my favorite thing is in Black Moon is when Niall says I love you. I just melt. With Niall’s history those words mean so much, you know how deeply he cares for Matt, how he’d do anything for him.

I loved Black Moon because it gave me great mystery and a bit of danger and action and more romance and a few pretty hot scenes too. It was great to return to Piedras Island and all the interesting people and of course Fenrir the dog too. I just love this couple and this series.

When the body of a shady man is found and those who know him seem uncooperative, Piedras Island Sheriff Mat Dempsey knows his small team is about to busy again. Finding more remains and an assault stretch the team thin and when Mat’s partner, Niall Hamarsson, is endangered and mysterious visitors arrive, things really start to escalate. This has been such a wonderfully written police procedural / romance trilogy! There’s more emphasis on Mat and Niall’s relationship in this final book as they plan their wedding but, satisfyingly, the cases take their usual higher priority. What I’ve really liked about this trilogy is that the threads of events are woven together into a plausible tapestry at the end of each book, only to be unpicked and reformed into a different tapestry as new information comes to light in the next book. It’s only in the final book that we see the complete pattern of events properly explained. That impressive sequencing takes a lot of thoughtful forward planning by author Elle Keaton. I’m so pleased Michael Dean narrates the audiobooks, his character voicings are excellent.

This follows similar to the two previous installments. A series of crimes that seem scattered, but it all pulls together in the end. It also pulls some crime together from the earlier books, which I expected to happen.

The romance side was still lacking for me. The first book had good tension building, the second book was short on interaction and ended with a sudden proposal, and this one...still don't feel their connection really. All the sex was stuffed in this book. The pacing was odd, both series-long and in this book alone.

Overall, not a bad read, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for more on the romance front. The crime/suspense side was reasonably good at holding my attention.

This is a great book.
I totally LOVE Niall, Mat, Fenrir and all characters from their small island (even the bad guys). This is a WONDERFUL crime story! It is surprising, believable and full of plot twists. I have to admit that every time I though I knew what was going on, who killed who and why, I was surprised to find i was terribly wrong.

This is book #3 in Hamarsson & Dempsey series and it wraps up all murders, arson and bombing. These three books are actually one big, long case so they HAVE to be read in order. This time we not only get to the bottom of all Sherrif's problems but we also get a very happy ending for Mat and Hamarson.

This book is fast paced, it is really hard to put it down and have some break.
I hope we'll get Shay's story in the future (and of course more Mat and Hamarsson)

This is the well crafted third and final instalment of the series, where the complex overall story arc comes to a smooth and seamless satisfying end.
The two very realistic main characters of Niall and Mat are living together and trying to plan their wedding. Unfortunately as the body count rises, workloads increase and wedding planning is put on the back burner.
The twists and turns kept me fully engaged and turning the pages needing to know what happens next. Through it all, Mat and Niall did still manage to carve out some private time together to keep things steamy.
I loved how this series concluded and fervently wish that I could read it for the first time again.
This cannot be read as a standalone.

Im not a super fan of mystery reads but I enjoyed this series, with its combination of mystery and romance as we follow Niall and Mat as they solve another mystery and plan a wedding!

I mean bodies in harbours and wedding planning shouldn't really work but it does.

This was well paced with good characters.

Once again, Elle Keaton has caught the true essence of island life in the Pacific Northwest. A perfect book finale for this trilogy. All of the loose threads, all the murders from this series, the puzzle pieces finally fit together. And Niall’s character growth and love for Mat has been so rewarding. Awesome series, I love a good mystery!
