Don’t miss the next installment in The Witches of Hollow Cove series.

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES.

We killed someone…

Okay, not exactly the news I wanted to hear from my aunts. But here it was. Now, what the hell was I supposed to do with it?

Just when I thought I could finally get a well-deserved break from the shitshow I’d been living for the past months, I get hit with this.

To make matters worse, an investigator starts snooping around Hollow Cove, asking questions about my aunts. If they’re found guilty of this murder, it’s a one-way ticket to Grimway Citadel—the witch prison.

Adding to my problems, something in the dark is hunting me. And unfortunately, it’s not a naked Marcus.

If that isn’t bad enough, things between me and the chief are falling apart, literally, and I don’t think they can be fixed.

If you like fast-paced urban fantasy adventure with a kick-butt heroine and plenty of action, suspense, and humor, you’ll love Wicked Ways.

frustrating

I like the books but it’s very frustrating to read how the protagonist doesn’t seem to learn from her mistakes. She behaves like a teenager when she’s clearly not. I’m not sure if I’ll continue the series for this very reason.

3.5 stars, rounded up because goodreads doesn't allow us halvsies.

As a whole, I really do love the world that Kim has created with the Witches of Hollow Cove. I love the witches and their magic, and how we've over all learned that it works, I love the way the demons work and how we learned last book and Tessa working with the Soul Collector that they aren't too far from us with their own hierarchy and rules to their people, and I love the shifters - specially that our key shifters are the wereapes because of Marcus and Alison.

The world does feel lush, inviting, and I want to get lost in it.

And I'm sure you're going, but then why only 3.5 stars for the book, right?

The problem is that in a lot of ways, I don't feel like the characters are learning from everything that they've been through in the books. It also hit me this book that everything in the six books has happened in the span of a couple MONTHS. Because after each book the author hit right into the next issue, the next plot point, the next major OMG THIS IS HAPPENING moment. It's only been a few months since Tessa got her Merlin's license. It's only been a few months since we watched Tessa be accused of murder, Ruth confess to murder, Gran come back as a zombie and Tessa learn who her dad was, and then work for the soul collector.

It's like there's no down time in the world, which when I realized that also gave me a little bit of whiplash, because while yes, books normally hit boom, boom, boom for us the reader. I'm almost shocked that the characters don't even get like a week of downtime to rest, to wrap their heads around what just happened before moving on. We don't even have to see that on page, just a small reference to like a week had passed since the whole ordeal with the soul collector, or something.

And I know, book 5 left us off on the cliffhanger that led directly into this issue, so there would be no downtime because end of book five she had left to see Marcus and it was mentioned they were all sitting around the table. But it's just a lot when you realize just how little time has actually passed between book 1 and this book (6).

This next bit may contain a bit of spoilers for later bits of the book, but I do want to mention it, so be warned. I'll try not to be OVERLY spoilery as I can but I had a couple major issues with how a couple things were handled that also lead to my deducting stars off the book.

I'm also not in love with how abusive the MIAD allows their agents to be not only to those under investigation, but also to OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT. What Silas did to Marcus, purely because Marcus had arrested Beverly first was absolutely and utterly uncalled for. And for him to not be punished in any way by anyone in the MIAD is horrible. I get not seeing eye to eye on cases, but the fact that Silas was already out for all four of the Davenport witches from before he had ever stepped foot in Hallow Cove, and then torturing another law enforcement officer - and the highest one in the town itself no less, and him not being called to task for overstepping and being such a shit person, I don't love. Because if that is how shitty the MIAD is, why has no one overthrown it and dismantled it. It shows a clear disinterest in actually finding out the truth, about anyone, and only following through with vendetas. And an organization who has members that go rouge in that sense, shouldn't be managing an entire magical community of people.

My other bone to pick, if you will. I HATED the whole argument and being pissed off at Tessa when she said she couldn't make the dinner that Marcus' mother had planned. No one asked Tessa if she was available. No one checked with Tessa if she'd be up for a dinner. No one said anything until she accidentally ran into Marcus and his mother, and they just expected her to be at a dinner, THAT NIGHT, that no one had told her about. She's a whole grown ass woman. You want to do an important, introduce her to the family dinner, you fucking coordinate that shit. Even if she wasn't being hunted by a demon and working to keep Beverly out of Azkaban, who don't know what she may have planned with her aunts, with her father she's still getting to know, with Iris and Rowan even. And she's expected to drop everything for a dinner she didn't know was on the books because you as her boyfriend couldn't have let her know about it?

I don't care how hot you are, or that you're the chief of the town, or that your mother is only here for a limited time and that was the only time it could be done. You do not get to be mad at your girlfriend because you drop she needs to be at mom's house for a dinner less than 12 hours before said dinner is happening. Even if you had been missing each other, you could have fucking texted her 'hey mom wants to meet you, she wants to do a dinner on this day, at this time, can you mark your calendar' the moment it was set up. People have lives, and while SOs are important, it is not our responsibility to drop everything because of your poor planning choices. And you don't get to be mad if less than 12 hours from said event, you tell us about it and we say we have plans we can't get out of. Just. No. That irritated me beyond belief.

That and Marcus not taking Tessa's side when Alison was being a bitch at every turn. Including at the dinner when his mother moved HER to sit next to Silas, but left Marcus where he was so Alison could sit next to him when Tessa does risk her life because demon hit man out there for her, to attend the stupid dinner since Marcus was such a man baby about it. Like, she risked more than you know, she tried to come and talk to you to tell you what was up, and you can't even tell your mom no when she separates you at the dinner table? What's the point of Tessa being at this dinner again?!

I think that got a little ranty, sorry. But as you can see I had some little issues about those moments.

Will I keep going, I mean I'm almost halfway through the series, so why not? I'm hoping we learn more about her dad, the premise of the next book seemed interesting, so I'll track on and keep on moving on.

Ugh Tessa acts like a 2 year old with her tantrums.. can she please grow up!! Her impulsivity and anger ruin the story 🙄🙄 her fights with the Demon assassin were dumb, she knows what doesn’t work but keeps doing the same thing. She keeps secrets from the one person that could help her. I enjoyed the story itself, it was just Tessa’s character that keeps the experience from being truly enjoyable. Pleaseeeee give her some character growth.

Things go from bad to worse for the characters in this series but there is always friendship, family, laughter and hope. I adore Marcus and really want this relationship to work out well. The heroine's impulsivity is often her most self destructive trait but it also is usually selfless. She always tries to do the right thing. I think that is why she is so lovable.

Wicked Ways is the sixth book in the Witches of Hollow Cove series by Kim Richardson.

Tessa's aunt have just tell her something she never would have guess or want to hear. They killed someone and burried the body in the backyard. And to make things worse, of course an inspector is coming the next day and is in advanced. Just to add to the mix, demons have put a target on Tessa's back.

I have really loved this and can't wait for the next book. I have received an arc of this book from the author.

This was so good and I loved every minute of it. I was sucked into this series from the first chapter of the first book. Ms. Richardson's style of writing flows so well and the characters are so delightful, whether delightfully wonderful or delightfully awful. I look forward to the next book in this wonderful series.

In this book Beverly is accused of murder and Silas is on the case. He's a piece of work and has it out for the Davenport witches, especially Tessa, claiming she cheated on her test for her Merlin license because she used a ley line. He is so awful you just want something terrible to happen to him. As if all that isn't enough, there's a demon hit man out to kill Tessa and he's one of the best. He's stronger than she is and has more power and his daggers are poisonous. Then there's Chief Marcus who makes her heart beat double time and shows up unexpectedly with his mother to introduce her to Tessa. Naturally Tessa get off on the wrong foot - likely the one she just put in her mouth. With danger, action, love, lust, family and a generous helping of humor, this is one entertaining and enjoyable read.

Shocker! This story did not end on a cliff hanger, never thought that would happen. The main character is finally showing some growth - thank the gods because she was becoming very tiresome, although I think the use of "ladyballs" is wayyyyyyyy too much in the stories.
I like that the author is adding a little more elements to the story, now instead of the normal "save the day" theme of the story, we have some other things going on in the background - stay alive, have a romantic life, protect the family.
I was surprised that there were some proofreading errors in this issue, hasn't been the case for the last 5 books, this is the main reason for my score.

This is a good book in the series. Things go from bad to worse for the characters in this series but there is always friendship, family, laughter and hope. This book had many things for Tessa to deal with from a body in the backyard, an inspector and demons. I really loved this and can't wait for the next book. Xxx

Tessa Davenport and her aunts have a battle for justice on their hands. Aunt Beverly killed someone in self defense who attempted to murder her and siphon off her magic in the most evil of ways, but she panicked and covered it up, and then the other aunts helped her bury the body, implicating them as well. They buried the evil git, and then had to move him in a panic when they found out the family was looking for him.

So when magical agents coming hunting the evil Nathaniel, the family goes into panic trying to cover up the cover up, so alllll kinds of crazy things are happening.

In the midst of the chaos, Tessa’s adored Marcus also wants to introduce her to his mother Katharine. Katharine hosts a rather unpleasant dinner party and separates Marcus and Tessa. So the odds of Tessa and the potential mother in law to be aren’t warm and fuzzy. Tessa is publicly seated next to the rather unpleasant Silas (who attempted to ensure she didn’t pass her Merlin exams.) Marcus is seated next to his evil ex girlfriend Allison who is openly attempting to seduce him back into their old relationship. Could it be his mother is attempting to sabotage Tessa’s relationship with Marcus??

Also, Tessa is being hunted and attacked by a demon assassin. She doesn’t know why yet, but her father helped her survive the demons first attack. Plenty of action in book 6 for those who can handle the high speed 🎢 coaster of drama since there is plenty of it.

Things worsen when the agents come to arrest Beverly’s aunt, Marcus moves her, they attack Marcus and beat him, leaving him in a cell in his own jails! Tess, infuriated, comes to bust him OUT of the jail, rescue him, then meets the demon assassin again outside, oyyyy, and they fight, but this time, both Tessa and Marcus take the demon on, but inexplicably the on looks at Tessa’s wound from his blade, declares the contract void and rushes away.

Tessa finds the way to prove her aunt Beverly is actually innocent of the murder (in an incredibly ingenious method). Nathaniel’s murderous intentions predate Beverly and reveal his past in a terrifying way that shut the case close so Justice prevails. What a despicable villain, a remarkable heroine with a tantalizing beloved and an absolutely worthwhile read

At the end of the last book, Tessa's aunts confess they killed someone. Apparently, the deceased Nathaniel Vandenberg, a wealthy and attractive witch was dating Beverly. She ignored the warning signs and found herself in a life-threatening situation. Dolores and Ruth found her and were able to overpower Nathaniel but, in the process, they killed him. The spell he used on Beverly was an illegal one and they were able to reverse it because his body was in close proximity. That said and done, the body was buried in their backyard.

The letter they received is from the Merlin equivalent of internal affairs. The MIAD is investigating Nathaniel's disappearance and would be coming the next day to question the Davenport witches.

Of course, the logical and best thing to do would be to tell Marcus, the chief, but that's not what happens. Instead, they dig up the body with the intent of reburying it in the cemetery.

The MIAD investigator turns out to be Silas. He hates the Davenport witches especially Tessa. He believes Tessa cheated on the Merlin testing by maneuvering ley lines to best him. Thankfully House is on their side and Silas finds nothing even though he's within feet of the body.

Tessa's sure her aunts are going to do something to Silas, but she doesn't know when or where. Unfortunately, as she's looking for them, she runs into some trouble of her own. A demon determined to kill her, simply for existing a half-breed demon, an abomination.

The process, while painful, is successful and Tessa is on the mend. Now with a lot more demon blood than she had before.

Notice the one thing missing here, Marcus hasn't been told any of this. Not about the body, not about the attack on Tessa and now he wants her to go to dinner at his mother's at night, when the demon could find her. This is going to cause problems for Marcus and Tessa's relationship.

Between the investigation and the attempt on Tessa's life this book is a page turning read. I couldn't wait to see how all the pieces would come together.

3 stars.

Book 6 and the love hate relationship continues for me.

So, it seems that someone in the Davenport family household will be accused of murder at some point in one of the books in the series.
Book 1: Tessa with minimum knowledge of her powers and being thrown into the family business
Book 2: Tessa is accused of murder
Book 3: Ruth is arrested for confessing to a murder
Book 4: Gran comes back as a Zombie, Mom shows up and real dad is revealed.
Book 5: Tessa turns old because of a deal she made with the soul collector to save Gran and others souls.
Book 6: Beverly is accused of murder and Tessa has a demon hit man after her.

In book 7 who will be accused of murder? Ronin, Iris, Marcus, Dolores, or Demon dad?

Tessa, between you lady balls and peeing on yourself a little, you have annoyed the hell of of me.

Marcus and Tessa’s relationship is giving me whiplash. Nope you don’t tell him that you have a demon hot man after you and turn down the invite to his mothers dinner party. You get mad because the heifer who is trying to mark her claim on your man, gets chummy with his mom. You get angry because you know she will be at the party and then decide yep I will risk my life to attend party to tell him in person that I’m risking my life because of said demon killer. Yep smart choice there. Then you thinks it’s over because he gets mad at you for risking your life and not being up front and honest with him. The because in a battle with the demon killer he calls you mine so everything is okay. Ugh, whiplash.

It is an improvement over that last book. But still a lot of inconsistencies and holes in the story. Where is the back stories?

Assassins and MIAD Agents

MIAD is investigating the missing man Dolores, Beverly and Ruth admitted to murdering in the last book. Unfortunately for all concerned that turns out to be Silas and he, his leather pants, and his team appear to have an enormous chip on their shoulders where Davenport witches are concerned.

The ladies dig the "victim" from under the birdbath and hide him in the basement with plans to re-bury him in the cemetery at dawn... oversleeping Silas arrives to check Davenport House before they can do so... but the house prevents Silas from seeing the body under his nose.

Tessa is attacked by a demon hitman who strikes a potentially fatal blow with a poisoned blade... a blood transfusion from her father saves her life but warns her to stay inside Davenport House because the demon will be back...

Everyone gets in plenty of trouble, and lots of "fatal" injuries they recover from very fast, Marcus and Tessa argue, Beverly gets arrested and still, it's all okay by the end, suddenly Marcus's mother has done a complete about-face and adores all the Davenports with no explanation, and Tessa gets one over of Silas so he's going to have even more reason to go after her...

Whilst the characters had a certain uniqueness the storyline dissipates into more cliché puff writing than a credible strong world... feels like Richardson has lost her way... it's not unreadable; it just could have been more than it is...

„Wicked Ways“ by Kim Richardson is the sixth book in the “Witches of Hollow Cove” UF series, which follows Tessa, a witch in her early thirties that left NY (after ten year trying to pursue a career in the city) broke and heartbroken, to come back home to Hollow Cove and live in Davenport House - the family state- with her three eccentric aunts and works in the family’s magical P.I agency ‘The Merlin Group’.

The last sentence Tessa was expected to come out her aunt’s mouth was “We killed someone”, but that are Aunt Dolores’s exact words, just before she explains how the body was buried in the backyard. And of course the inspector on the case, jumps at the opportunity to ‘get the Davenport witches’, accusing Tessa of cheating in her Merlin license test. When it rains in Hollow Cove it really pours 😉 too bad the aunts cannot put the inspector to rest in the backyard too…. trust me he is that awful… This is a wicked twisted story, entertaining, enjoyable, and funny from the very first sentence to the end.

“Witches of Hollow Cove” is a fast-paced UF series, that mixes eccentric witches, a supernatural town population, the occasional mystery, and a snarky heroine into entertaining mix of murder mystery, supernatural UF and chick lit.

Good

Tess’s aunts claim that they committed a murder and it’s now being investigated.
Then there is the fact that her life is now being threatened, and Marcus springs a surprise meeting on her!

Back in Hollow Cove, and picking up where the previous book left off, we find Tess trying to help her aunts. When her life is threatened, she has to choose between them and herself, and typically she puts everyone else first.
There are some hitches in her relationship with Marcus, some interesting interaction with the familiar Hildo, and a run in with an old enemy, who has some grudges.
Tess’s impulsive ways have a habit of landing her in trouble, and there are more than a few times when I wanted to strangle her for her stupid decision making. Fortunately, she cleared a lot of it up by the end, leaving us with just a couple of rather intriguing questions!

Another enjoyable trip to Hollow Cove, in this enchanting cosy paranormal mystery series.

And here Tessa thought she would get some calm and normal in her life after what she has gone through but no. Instead she has trouble from multiple sources that are causing her grief. The story begins with a bang and a laugh and just sucked me in until the end. Loved it as new and old characters pop in and cause problems. Loved reading to see what Tessa and her aunts would face this time and how they would come out on top. Just a good addition to the series and kept me entertained the whole time.

Witches, Demons and assorted characters

Tessa finds there is a hit on her from the demonic underworld. Once attacked, she is poisoned by a demon blade. Her father saves her by giving her a blood transfusion. However, that makes House a little persnickety and she's told she can't leave the house. Beverley is arrested for murder. Wait until you read that part of the story! Tessa meets Marcus' mother and does not make a good first impression. This portion of the series has a HEA.

Storys predictable

I love the charcters even though many are from other shows like the golden girls, but all the lady few books follow the same pattern and story arc. Each book is pretty predictable at this point. I'd like to see more growth, especially in the main character. Her life experiences from book to book, she doesnt seem to learn from and makes the same mistakes. Her magic should be well improved by now too. I havent read anything about book seven yet, but im guessing Dorothy is in trouble next...we'll see

Wham, bam, and thank you!!

So much going on in this one and it may be my favorite yet! Tessa kicking some demon ass, or at least trying to since demon dad was needed for the rescue but finally getting back at that smug arrogant internal affects witch was THE best! Helping to save her Aunt Beverly (a personal favorite side character) and seeing her relationship blossom and grow with sexy wereape Marcus is so much fun! Bring them back with more stories!!!!!

ROFL...and I might have just peed a little!

...takes a little longer to get back up nowadays, too. Wish like Hell I could've read something this inspiring 10 years ago, when my 'Lady Balls' had peach fuzz. Then, I'd have viewed an almost identical 'midlife crisis' as a
midlife adventure, an opportunity! The most heartfelt compliment I ever received was the exclamation that I have "big ol' HAIRY (Lady) balls!!". Hilarious. Gotta love that Basement!

I’m really digging this series

This was a fun read.
Light hearted and honestly non-stop. If you think about it, this entire book took place in roughly three days time.
A lot of things were mentioned here and barely given any attention, but considering the focus was on Beverly’s case/crime/coverup it’s all forgivable. There’s also the matter of the editing mistakes. It seems that the ending was rushed.

Action packed for sure

Action packed and daring adventure would be more accurate. The past has the way of coming back and biting you in the tail. This time it was the Aunties time to be under the gun. Texas only problem was the other's were finally after her and had sent a demonic hit man after all that. Also if that didn't fit the bill Marcus' mother is in town wanting to meet Tessa.

Another mystery comes to Hollow Cove but this time it is surrounding the Davenports and it might finish them all. This time appearances are deceiving and there's a lot of factors that's pulling our favorite ladies apart. Will Hollow Cove lose it's powerful Merlins or will they overcome and become stronger?
