Es un libro que pretende ser informativo y es un batiburrillo de conocimientos de magia popular que se pueden encontrar fácilmente en internet. Un libro innecesario.

* I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Hoodoo unlocking the Secret power of Rootwork, Folk magic, Conjuration,Witchcraft, and Mojo is a fast paced no nonsense look at the practice of hoodoo and its application in our modern world. Readers can expect to find beliefs, tools, and formulas presented in a practical and concise manner that welcomes practitioners from across cultural and religious barriers to take part in preserving and evolving wisdom the ancestors have passed down to us.

What I liked
1. This book is short simple and to the point . Keeping this piece brief avoids the information getting weighed down with too many example stories or going off topic entirely, both issues I have run into in other hoodoo works I enjoy.

2. References used are included at the end of the book. While this is becoming more common in spiritual literature it was not the case back when I first started reading so I am always extra happy to see it.

3. The acknowledgment that while astrology is not traditionally a part of hoodoo it can be incorporated to great effect

4. The approach to mojo bags was interesting, specifically the idea of naming them which isn’t something my people do but I like the idea and reasoning behind it.

5. There is a going theme in each chapter of presenting how things are done traditionally and then following up with how more modern practices are approaching the same idea. The best example of this is the authors introduction to the topic of candle magic.

6. The cartomancy section included card meanings for standard playing cards.

What didn’t work for me as much

1. Some sections are a bit too short: while brevity is a strong suit for this book it is also its greatest hindrance at times. A good example of this being it’s section on making hoodoo waters which goes by so quickly you may miss it if you blink.

2. Hoodoo is such a Christian influenced practice that the idea of calling on beings outside of the christian pantheon during a hoodoo working feels really off for me personally.

3. No In text or on page citation: This would have let me know what ideas the author pulled from which reference source and a bit of what ideas are their own. Including in text citation would easily push this to be a 4.5 star read and thus let me round up to give it 5 stars on here .

4. A list of possible odds and ends to use for bone casting is given with little to no insight on how to actually do a bone casting until much later in the book. This organization method while functional threw me off significantly in my first flip through.

5. The discussion of candle magic and later of rolling candles in herbs lacks fire safety warnings that I would have liked to see

6. A word used in the cartomancy section is seen as a slur by many and can be hurtful to Romani individuals.

- some Romani have chosen to reclaim the g word and I do not know if the author may be Romani and making a personal decision.

- the author may not know the history of the g word as a slur as it is an issue that has only been talked about In spiritual circles for a short while.

7. The ancestor veneration side of hoodoo feels sorely neglected most likely a casualty of the rapid pace of the book.
Other notes

- The author uses a different definition of amulet and talisman than I am used to.

- I do not personally hold to the idea that a mojo must not be seen or touched by others but appreciate the reasoning shared by the author

- pictures of sample workings and card layouts/ bone castings would have been nice and I hope they are worked into future editions of the author’s work

Who I would recommend this book for and similar works

Hoodoo unlocking the Secret power of Rootwork, Folk magic, Conjuration,Witchcraft, and Mojo is a great primer for those just starting out in hoodoo and for eclectic practitioners curious about where their paths may overlap with Hoodoo. This book will be an especially helpful springboard for helping the more modern root worker stay grounded as they explore other works such as those by Starr Casas and Orion Foxwood.

Captivating and very informative.
Okay, I admit I love Mari Silva's books she writes about really interesting subjects. Now I do not always agree with her take on the subject but I admire her work. This book like the other I have read gives the reader insight into the subject that for some reason people just seem afraid. Yes, it is the occult but the occult means only the unknown. This is the first book I have read on Hoodoo and I found it captivating and very informative it was an excellent read. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

RIP OFF! Horrible that she totally stole her information from Denise Alvarado's "conjuredoctors.com" site. Way to steal to make money but karma's free and she'll get tons of that soon enough...

It gave me plenty of Insight into certin practices and who and why they were used. I don't want to be an insensitive white majik practitioner.
