When the Crows Caw

Rate this book
Evelyn Alloway lives in a quiet suburban town. After a horrific car accident kills her mother and estranges her from her friends, Evie is struggling to find herself in the midst of anxiety, depression and survivor’s guilt.

One night, she comes home and finds herself embroiled in an argument with her father, emotions run high and in the heat of anger, Evie leaves the house. With no friends to turn to, she heads to the place her mother used to take her regularly as a child, to the woods up the hill behind the town. Dark, cold and scared, Evie gets lost and stumbles in the woods, blacking out until morning.

In the morning, Evie comes to and realises that she is no longer alone in the woods. She is found by a boy her age named Sebastian, and as the two start talking, she realises for the first time since the accident the advantages of speaking about what she is feeling.

The next day, Sebastian coincidentally turns up as the new student in Evie’s English class, and the two quickly fall into a comfortable familiarity. The more they get to know each other, the more Evie begins to think that maybe, deep inside her, there is still hope. But as well as hope, Evie is also beginning to struggle with a whole lot of powerful new feelings pulling and pushing against the tide of the old ones.

As she feels herself falling headfirst for Sebastian, she can’t ignore the voice in the back of her mind telling her she doesn’t really know him, that there is something he isn’t telling her. After unsuccessful attempts to get him to open up, Evie takes it into her own hands to find out the truth. Heading to the local library, she finds an old newspaper article outlining the details of Sebastian’s dark secret.

With her world turned upside down once more, Evie is forced to face both the past and the present, and come to terms with actions that she had no control over, and those that she did.

A partially epistolary tale using blog posts, messages and other media, When the Crows Caw explores the ins and outs of being a teenager dealing with heavy emotional burdens, and how sometimes one friend to talk to can make all the difference.

Born and raised in Sydney, Sam has an English degree from UNSW that stemmed from an education degree that they never finished.
Always an avid writer, most of what they wrote stayed hidden away in old notebooks and locked away on lost 3 1/2 inch floppy disks, yet they remain an inspired and passionate writer.
They love reading YA literature, fantasy and sci-fi and the occasional classic, any time of the day or night, so long as tea and a scented candle are involved.

When the Crows Caw really took me by surprise; I mean I went in knowing a little a bit about the story but in the end, I was completely blown away. I definitely did not expect that ending 🤯 With a very intriguing storyline, albeit a dark topic, I really felt like this story had me on a need to know basis, and I needed to know more so I couldn’t put it down. I loved the little breaks between the chapters, they kept things kept light, fun and super interesting, they were like little extras that you didn’t realise you needed or wanted. Overall, I loved this book, and I really recommend it if you love a bit of paranormal

Great read! Kept me hooked the whole way through, making it very hard to put down. One of those books you just keep saying "one more chapter" to yourself when you try to put it down.
