It's always good to hear/ read sharing from others who has established their businesses. Some people share into very details of their experiences. But somehow, I felt the difference from Brian's sharing. Most of the time when I read other People's sharing, I have a bit hard time to understand. It is different when I read this book.
The only chapter I have slight difficulty is the P&L. But I agree that this is the most essential matter for anyone who run a business. The considerations of salaries, overhead and expenses, etc are as well important.
Brian discussed about different types of people, specialists, sale people, manager..... Understanding oneself and strength in the type of types are essential to keep a healthy business running. I had created a business before in partnership with others. I think we failed in exercising this. It was a pity that one partner with higher percentage of sharing usually want to dominate in certain roles. Any assumption that partners are assigning roles rather than understanding their unique strengths, etc would not be healthy. I eventually left due to this and also determined to return to Canada.
Brian is in different businesses worth millions to multi millions. His sharings are still highly relevent to me in a small business for continuous unlearning and relearning myself to get ready for another adventure. I wish I can and the next adventure(s) would be more fruitful.
Yes Brian and his experiences with his numerous businesses has led me to FINALLY NOT manufacture my Raptor Domes Kits™ that were to be manufactured after Covid!
After vacillating between keeping the potential 30%-60% NET PROFIT business and doing a royalty deal I have decided to pursue only the royalty deal and NOT backdown from what I'm asking for!
I had a public relations consulting client who decided to get into the disco nightclub business in Atlanta after being very successful as a developer. Later I saw Bob and asked him had he regretted opening the business. He told me he had a nice wooden plaque on his desk saying: STICK TO WHAT THE F-CK YOU KNOW!
In Jacksonville Florida I handled the public relations for a new restaurant started by BANKERS who bought a FRANCHISE of a very successful restaurant in Fort Lauderdale. They put their ALCOHOLIC buddy in charge of Food and Beverage and wondered why they were losing MONEY on ALCOHOL!
PHYSICIANS are another group who are GREAT to get involved in a business venture!
May be I will do a royalty deal with a physician on my Raptor Domes Kits™ business!
As for me I have several industries I can now consult in: public relations, preparedness and survival skills and designing Eco-Villages!
THANK YOU Brian for your invaluable information here!
I have the exact same problems in business this book was meant to address. Too many people start businesses but end up self employed because they make themselves the most valuable person in the organization.
There is another way but it involves building up an organization that functions on its own. I almost reached the end of this road with one business and I can attest that it was the best most fulfilling existence I have ever lived.... Until I messed it up.
If you are a business builder or want to be one read this book first so when the time comes and no one is there to save you from your poor planning or government regulations you will have the proper attitude and spirit to find the lesson or opportunity in your struggle for success.
In this book, the author shares over 30 practical business lessons you can apply to successfully start, scale and sell your business. I love the conversation style writing which made me feel as if I was directly in front of the author being mentored by him. It was easy to absorb the material and it made the book fun to read (unlike other boring self-help books). It was definitely worth the time I took to read it and I highly recommend you read it too!

I feel like I learned some important lessons on how to make a business run more successfully. The author does a great job of explaining why a good business can't be based off of the owner and value has to be created separate from the person. Definitely worth the read and very relatable!
I liked how it entertained my pursuit in knowing about finances. I learned to save and avoid unnecessary struggles that included scams and other propaganda. It made me feel a bit bitter in terms of trivial suggestions. It's better to increase your profits and work with trusted partners instead of get certain establishments and businesses that yield no fruit.
