Cary Brewer is the best catcher in the country, and he’s part of the reason I’m starting my first Major League Baseball game for the Memphis Blues. He told me the first day of our minicamp that he’d make my life a living hell. Oh, he achieved that goal in spades, but I doubt in the way he intended.
Tragedy never takes a holiday, and having suffered one, I’m not ready for another. When it happens, Cary is there to support me. I have a guardian angel who’s been looking out for me, and I never knew it.
Now, I wonder what the cost will be for both of us—since I’ve already fallen for him.

Skip Mitchell told me that his nephew is a hell of a pitcher. Seeing the kid in action proves the man right. But when I lay eyes on Cash Mitchell, my gut ties itself in knots. Ask anyone—I’m not that guy.
The attraction I’m fighting tooth and claw will only be detrimental to both of our careers. I need to get away from him, but how do I do that?
The kid has me completely under his spell, and the blue in my uniform will match the blue in my pants if something doesn’t give.
This work of fiction is approximately 55,000 words in length, ends in an HEA, and can be read as a standalone novel.
I grew up in the rural Midwest before moving to the East Coast with a dashing young man who swept me off my feet, and we've now settled in the desert of Nevada. I write M/M contemporary romance, subgenres: sweet low angst, age-gap, cowboys, mysteries, and military/mercenary to name a few. I am a firm believer in "Love is Love" regardless of how it presents itself, and I'm a staunch ally of the LGBTQIA+ community.
I have a loving, supportive family, and I feel blessed by the universe and thankful every day for all I have been given. I’m old enough to know how to have fun, but too old to care what others think about my definition of a good time. In my heart and soul, I believe I hit the cosmic jackpot. Cheers!
New-to-me author, and I got an ARC copy of this book, but I just couldn't get into the story. DNF @39%
The characters, the plot.... they were boring for me. It's a sport romance, but there wasn't one sport scene at all (until the 39%, IDK if it gets more later).
I wanted to like it, because it has age gap and friends to lovers, but this book isn't for me, sorry.
With a little assistance, true love can never be denied.
4 perfect stars
Not really a huge sports fan, but if love, heat and a bit of mystery is mixed in, count me in!
It would take me pages to review completely this well written baseball romance between Cash and Cary, so I shall just touch upon the highlights. Cary, a catcher who guards his plate like a rabid dog with a cherished bone, relies heavily on his mentor, Skip. When Skip makes Cary promise to mentor his nephew, Cash, a rising pitcher in the minors, he could have never could have predicted what lay in store for them both.
After Skip passes away from cancer, his long hidden secret is brought into the light. Secretly gay, Skip was co-owner of Ben Dover's, a strip club that featured gay drag queens (and teammates) as performers.
After services for Skip are over, Cary's gaze meets Cash's, causing insta-heat and the start of a difficult relationship.
Cash's pitching repertoire is perfection, with one exception. His change-up pitch. Cary is determined to change that, wanting the young pitcher to perfect every pitch known to baseball.
But when one of their sexual encounters they thought was private becomes known by the team's management via a voice recording, it places both athlete's careers in jeopardy.
During training camp in Las Vegas, Cash devises a rash and daring plan to thwart any preseason rumors or punishments from upper management about he and Cary being a possible gay couple. Cary, delighted with the plan, is all in.
When called before the team's management for a private meeting, both men defy their managers and the team's owner by revealing the plan both have already enacted. This defiance results in further obstacles placed in the their path to a fulfilling relationship.
Written with tenderness, expertly crafted wit and a bit of mystery, the author weaves an endearing mixture of plot lines that blend together seamlessly. The characters, even the minor ones, are developed artfully and are vital parts to the story, not just filler. The growth of Cash and Cary's relationship is gradually and romantically nurtured despite misunderstandings and setbacks. Cary's protectivness of Cash, along with his vow to Skip, is truly heartwarming and engaging. Cash's vulnerability and youth leave him open for harassment and scandal. But by working toward what both men desire, their feelings defy every bump in their pathway to happiness.
As this is a sports romance, readers who have an interest in baseball, forced gender identity reveals and gradually increasing heat should love this book. Along with a humorous slant at appropriate times, this story was a blast to read.
And surprise...no editing errors!
***Possible triggers: sexual harassment, forced sexuality reveals, parental drug abuse and child abuse and betrayal.
I often look at sports romances and a baseball one sounded great, but this story didn’t work for me at all. The book opens with Cash’s nerves out of control right before he’s set to pitch his first major league baseball game. Cary is there to help him out, as he has been since Cash joined the team. Cash is twenty-two and for a good portion of the book we only know that Cary is, as he says, “not twenty-two.” They have always had an attraction, but Cary has been a mentor to Cash and neither of them has even approached the line, let alone crossed it. Cary calls Cash “kid” all of the time—the word is there almost 100 times in the book, and when Cary says he feels like a “creep” being attracted to Cash because he’s Cash’s mentor, I started to understand how he felt that way with the amount of “kid” references. Cash is also shown as young and slightly naïve, and he didn’t seem ready to be a professional baseball pitcher or even ready to be in a serious relationship.
Really enjoyable quick read about 2 really likeable guys who play professional baseball. Great supporting cast - looking forward to more in the series 😎😎😎
Dnf. In my opinion, the point of a sports romance includes sports. The intimate connection between pitcher and catcher has so much potential, and this story didn't lean into it at all, at least not in the developing relationship stage. It's a shame. Just didn't do it for me.
this was so sweet and cute.. it was so much fun to watch these two become who they needed to be as individuals and together.. it was adorable and cute.. it was fun to watch them try to figure everything out and fight against it but give in. very good
Cash and Cary is the first book in the ‘Men of Memphis Blues’ series. It stars Cash Mitchell, a rookie pitcher, and Cary Brewer, a veteran catcher. This is told in first person from both Cash and Cary’s povs.
It’s baseball season and I thought this would be a perfect read. Unfortunately, it was not. I’ll get into that later, but first the blurb. The blurb doesn’t accurately describe what happens in the plot, but then, I don’t think any blurb could. This plot is all over the place, plowing through events with no emotional connection, just a lot, and I mean a lot of monologue, info dumping, and just talking, talking, talking, on the part of the characters as they explain their thoughts, feelings, backgrounds, descriptions, just everything. It doesn’t create an emotional connection and left me feeling distant and uninterested in the characters and what happened to them. This is probably one of the most heavily monologued and info dumped books I’ve read. This story is also focused on the relationship and sex between Cash and Cary rather than the baseball aspect. Now that I got that out of the way, let me count the other ways this story didn’t work.
1) The names. Why did the author choose two names so similar? Each has four letters and the first two letters are the same. It was too easy to mix the names up and the additional reasons are in Number 2. 2) In the beginning, Cary’s voice was the stereotype of a tough seasoned veteran or couch, always calling Cash, ‘kid,’ which was rather annoying. As the story progressed both character voices grew erratic, there was no consistency to their tone or pattern. Cary’s voice changed to sounding more like Cash’s, and Cash ended up sounding older, so in the end, the two voices sounded the same. With both names being so similar, it made distinguishing the characters difficult. 3) There was way too much monologue and info dumping as I mentioned above. There was no build up to a romance, no situations where readers can get to know the characters as they get to know each other. It’s all just telling, mostly by Cary as he tells readers what he thinks of Cash when they met and how things are changing. It’s all telling with no in depth writing to convey emotions. 4) The characters are overly dramatic, like caricatures of baseball players, and also over-the-top events in baseball. It all comes across like a fantasy rather than real baseball. 5) Timewise events happen fast and the events are told so I didn’t feel drawn in to what was happening or to feel anything for the characters. 6) There were quite a few inconsistencies in this story. I don’t know how those errors got past the betas, proofers, and editors. It was very annoying. The author needs to find better helpers.
I’ll have to be honest. I think this was a poorly written story. I read another baseball book a couple stories ago and if you check back on my reviews, you’ll find it. If you want a good baseball story, read that one instead. This one I found disappointing. I am curious about Book Two characters, but if it’s written like this one, I don’t think I’ll like reading it. I have to give, Cash and Cary, 2 Stars.
This book desperately needed an editor. There were a few pages where the author actually mixed up the two characters names. I get it that it's a really cute pun but at least keep your character names straight.
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This review may contain spoilers so be warned.
Cash & Cary is a fun, sweet and heart-warming story of two men falling in love fast while trying to navigate the professional world of baseball, heal from personal loses and overcome obstacles in their career and the relationship.
Cash Mitchell is a talented pitcher. Cocksure in the field but a shy and private young man out of it. Cary Brewer is one hell of an experienced catcher and is confident on and off the field. He is also in the closet as being out in the open equates to a death sentence for his career. When these two met sparks flew all over the place. You can clearly see the chemistry between the two right from the start. It was attraction at first sight coupled with secret pinings as the two aren't sure on how to go about their feelings early on.
Their journey from friends to lovers was a fast and short one but handled nicely. The death of Cash's uncle Skip Mitchell is when the story started picking up though there were still sections in the book later on where the pacing and the transitions between scenes were a bit jarring. I enjoyed the interactions between the two main leads. Their dialogues can be a bit cheesy at times, but it worked out well in the end. The love that they have for each other and how it makes them stronger together really just pops out of the page.
The diverse supporting characters with their short appearances are show stealers. The Queens were amazing and Kim Donlyn was a delight to read. Hopefully the story of Skip and Kim will be written in the future.
I was a little disappointed that there was less baseball in the story than what I was expecting. Still the aspects that were included had nice attention to details and I appreciate that.
Cash & Cary is the first book in the Men of Memphis Blues. Despite some of the slight hiccups within the story, it is a great start for the series. I recommend that you do check this out. Be advised though though the age gap between the two and the sort of mentor vibes that was there between Cash & Cary early on might not be your cup of tea so be warned.
Cash and Cary is the first book in a new baseball series from Sam E. Kraemer and I really enjoyed reading it from start to finish. Cary is a catcher for the Mephis Blues and is coming towards the end of his career. He was asked by a friend to keep an eye on his nephew, Cash, an up and coming pitcher who moves to the team but Cary is sure he didn't mean for him to be attracted to the younger man. Cash has been crushing on Cary since he met him but assumes he's straight while Cash is in the closet. A tragedy brings Cary to Cash's side in his time of need, pushing him to take action and the rest, as they say, is history. The two men work really well together as teammates, friends and then as lovers. There are quite a few highs mixed in with a couple of lows that they work through together, with support from new found friends. The bad guys of the book leave you with a bad taste in your mouth, really sleazy but they get their comeuppance in the end. The story drew me in from the start and moves at a good pace, always with something happening whether with baseball or their relationship. I like how things move forward in regards to the Memphis Blues and am interested in seeing how that looks in the rest of the series and I hope that we hear more from the crew at Ben Dover's Dragtime Cabaret! Definitely a recommended read, easy to consume in one go and love the story. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
Im not a sports fan, I always found the reports of most teams to be catty and bitchy, and the Blues seemed to be no different. In fact there seems to less cattiness in Ben Dover.
Now as the the characters themselves, the lead characters.... Cash, I had a better feel for, he was cute, shy and bumbling, unless he was on the mound and then he became confident, Carys character, appart from his Loyality to Skip and his friends, and his protectiveness of Cash. I didnt have much of an opinion of him. Leading me onto other characters..... I hope we get a Kimber and Skip book. That couple and the character stories about them was amazing. I loved the ladies, in Ben Dover, and would love a story in relation to Keene.
I feel like there was a missed opportunity, after the kiss on the mound, that scene with Carol, Kim etc would have been a great one. Definately feel like I learned a little about baseball.
Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review one year to go left in the baseball league, then Cary was free to be himself. The standoffish approach is failing him every time a young pitcher needs help. Cash is in the closet as an up and coming pitcher. The only guy he can think to call in his time of need is Cary. When the decision to come out is taken out of their hands was hard hit below the belt, is there away back once the pain of betrayal is felt. This was such a hilarious, sweet and emotional to read with such a wonderful great ending. Cary fighting the pull only to get jealous when a young man is hang on Cash was so funny. Cash's reaction at the Club for the memorial was both priceless and hilarious. I just loved Kim and all the characters and the different personalities, I think they may have picked up new soft kink 'cackling here' at Ben Dover.
I really enjoyed Cash. He seemed sweet and really just wanted to do his best. Cary was slightly frustrating. He was conflicted about his feelings for Cash and him calling Cash kid over and over again was frustrating. I wish there had been a little more chemistry between the two, but overall they seemed to be a good match. The book is a little slow in the beginning, but a major life event happens for Cash and he relies on Cary to help him through. That’s when the story between these two really starts to pick up steam.
I don’t usually enjoy sports type books, but this one worked because there wasn’t an overabundance of baseball in it and baseball is my favorite sport. I do like the idea of an author tackling the homophobia that is rampant is major league sports and I thought this was handled well. I enjoyed the book and would definitely read the second in the series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one, it was one of those reads to just get a hot drink and hunker down with as you get sucked into the lives of both men. Cash and Cary were very likeable characters and their romance was set against a backdrop of the sport of baseball (of which I know nothing about) and the author made it informative and interesting without getting too bogged down in the technicalities. We also got a great group of supporting characters; notably the girls at Ben Dover's, who were a hoot! Cash and Cary's romance was very sweet with alot of heat; I particularly enjoyed how supportive and caring Cary was with Cash, it was very swoonworthy. A great and satisfying start to the series and looking forward to the next one.
This is a solidly enjoyable read. It’s fun, sweet, and heartwarming, with just a touch of drama to make it engaging. What I struggled with were the characters. I couldn’t connect to either Cash or Cary, and I didn’t really feel the chemistry between them. They also had me frustrated with the way they talked (Cary and how he addressed Cash), and how they interacted at times. It actually felt more along the lines of mentor/mentee without that intimacy to move them into becoming lovers. Other than that, there are a few inconsistencies in the timeline that niggled a bit. I think it came down to the transitions between scenes and time periods coming off a little jarring. But if you enjoy a good age gap, friends to lovers, sports romance, then this is worth checking out.
Cash and Cary have a great story. They started out as just Cary mentoring and guiding Cash in his new MLB pitching career. As the season goes on the two start a friendship due to working closely as pitchers and catchers do. After Cash suffers a loss after a great rookie season, Cary is there to help. There relationship starts slowly and develops at a nice pace without jumping straight to bed and love. They run into more than one obstacle along the way but never give up on each other. With the help of the Lovely Queens, especially Kim, they overcome the obstacles and head towards their HEA while chasing their World Series title! A great sports MM love story if this is your type of trope.
Cash is a rookie pitcher, Cary the old-salt catcher asked to take him under his wing and show him the ropes.... little did either know the chemistry that would simmer between them. Then tragedy strikes and the man that brought them together, Cash's Uncle Skip dies. Cash turns to his friend Cary in his time of need and bonds are tightened. Did Uncle Skip know they would need each other in everyway that they do? Could he have predicted this outcome? You'll have to read the book to find out more... I hate giving away all the juicy bits!! :D I know, I'm evil, but the book is soooooo worth it!! It's a promised HEA and so much steamy heat, after all most of it happens in Florida, lol. This book does not disappoint, believe me! Definitely check it out!!
Cary is the experienced catcher, Cash is the young pitcher. Cash's uncle is a friend of Cary and it is through him they meet. There is instant attraction, but this book takes a lovely journey through friendship to love. There is sadness and use of the hurt/comfort trope (one of my favourites). You will enjoy this book even if you don't "do" sports romances. Remember how you loved Bull Durham even though you don't like sports movies? Something about baseball seems to let authors create characters that blend physicality, emotional depth and smarts. All those are here and I look forward to reading all the rest of this series.
I enjoy a good sports book and this baseball one was great as it had action in practice, in the locker room and life out of the sports area also. Cary was a catcher and soon to retire when his good friend asked him to keep an eye out for his nephew Cash who was starting on the team. When life for Cash gets tough Cary comes to help him and their friendship and attraction turns into more. Being gay sportsman in a world where its not always accepted they had to keep hot under wraps. There were so many wonderful moments in the is book.Lots of secondary characters that made it flow so well. I really enjoyed the sand can't wait to see who's up next!
I absolutely LOVED IT!!! It was so sweet and adorable. I fell in love with every single character. I had so much fun laughing along with the humour and witty banter and I absolutely loved the ending. The story line was simply amazing and so easy to follow. I loved how they came together and grew together as characters and the intimacy was simply HOT and AMAZING!!! The gestures of love and sponteniety off it all was sweet. I loved how they never gave up and stood their ground when they fought for their love. Showing that no matter the opinions of others never let it come between you and the person you love. Sam E. Kraemer well done on an amazing book. I can not wait to see what happens next.
Cary Brewer is nearing the end of his career as a catcher in the majors. Cash Mitchell is just starting his career as a pitcher. Cash's uncle has been able to manoeuvre the two men together on the same team in Memphis. Neither man is open about their sexuality but both feel an attraction to the other. When Cash's uncle Skip dies secret desires are divulged. Now these two need to find a way to be together while hiding in plain sight. Unfortunately professional sports still has a very long way to go in breaking down the macho box that keeps same-sex relationships a dirty little secret. A wonderful story and maybe just the right solution to breaking the box.
Cash and Cary were great together, I liked their characters and the decent list of side characters. I really did enjoy their relationship and the realistic sex scenes (cleaning up, proper prep, that kind of thing). The timeline kept tripping me up though, little inconsistencies that would stick out on occasion. Cash and Cary moved really quickly with their relationship, it isn't a slow burn. I've not read any baseball related romances and I did enjoy that aspect of it and the attention to detail the author paid to it. I want to continue with the series and see who is next.
How do you explore a yearning for another player in the homophobic world of Major League Baseball, especially when you're already getting side eye for being connected to a well known scout - your uncle... that same uncle gives you a reason to get together in the off season and there's no way you are going back to the new season without your relationship... no matter the speedbumps - right?
Cash and Cary is a great story that happens to include baseball, so whether you are looking for a sports romance or a romance that happens to be in a sports setting you will not be disappointed.
I keep saying I’m not a fan of sports based books, but I keep reading them and actually really loving them. No exception here either. Baseball is a new one for me, so I have no idea how it’s played, that doesn’t really matter however because this one deals mostly with the characters and relationships, attempted blackmail and our guys winning the day. I really liked Cash and Cary, it was great that Skip is still involved and the ladies from Ben Dover were a delight to revisit. Can’t wait for the next in this series!
I really liked this book. You can tell as you are reading along that these two gents were both crazy about each other. When Cash called Cary because his uncle passed, that’s when the story picked up from friends to lovers. Loved the queens and hope they are in the next book. This is a great start to the series and am wondering who the next one will be about.
What a great story! I loved Cash and Cary! These two were so awesome together! Friendship that had chemistry from the start. These guys definitely had some ups and downs but they definitely were stronger together! This was such a sweet story! I absolutely loved the Queens! Really hope we see more of them! Great characters and storyline! Highly recommend! Received arc and am voluntarily leaving an honest review
I loved this heartfelt story about two men finding each other in the homophobic world of Major League Baseball. Cary is a season veteran while Cash is starting in his first season. The two men have a common connection in the form of Cary’ uncle as well as an attraction to each other. Cary offers support when the uncle dies and the two me get to know each other. This quickly leads to more. Lots of wit and sexy times. Very entertaining and delightful. I highly recommend.
I loved, loved, loved Cash and Cary! Cash looked up to Cary as he was the best catcher in the country when he was growing up. He was also a friend of his uncles. They begin as friends but quickly grows beyond. These two were really smitten with each other! They had connection and great chemistry from the beginning. Loved the Queens, hoping to see more of them! Such a good story, highly recommend! I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy I received.
MM romance, first book in new series but can be read as a stand-alone. Sports, age gap, HEA, easy to read story. Cash and Cary were meant to be, fated to meet with a bit of help and encouragement from Cash's uncle Skip. page turner with lots of twists in the story and some emotional moments. Deals with lots of issues including homophobia within professional sports.
I love Cash and Cary's story. They're perfect for each other and it seemed Cash's uncle Skip thought so to. It started with Cary just trying to be a teammate and mentor to Cash but slowly realized he wanted him. They had to face backlash for being true to themselves but they also had wonderful friends and family who had their backs. And Uncle Skip had their backs even in death. Cash was taken care of. Kim and his men are hilarious 🤣
