Written largely in universe, this is basically a compendium of the cosmic beings and gods and demons who make up the fabric of the Marvel Universe. It's a DK book, so of course the presentation is nice, with a lot of illustrations across decades of comics. The narrative spans the entirety of Marvel's fictional history, back to the creation of the universe and up to about 2019 or so. It can be a bit dry, and it's really only worth reading cover to cover if you want to be absolutely sure of the difference between Celestials and Eternals.
A type of encyclopedia that contains a vast amount of information about celestials, eternals and how these godly beings had a massive impact from the dawn of Marvel Universe up until some of the more recent events-stories in Marvel comics.
This book reads as if it is a fairy tale. Though there are lots of information in some events that are missing (for example from the recent War of the Realms, that I have read in its whole story-arc, only some pretty basic clues are given), the amount of info in this book is huge and I think it's a great read for comic lovers like me who haven't read a lot of older comics from Marvel and want to enrich their knowledge of Marvel's cosmos history.
The texts are accompanied with a lot of beautiful reprints of panels from both older and newer comics and creates an excellent final result.
A very enjoyable and fast review of marvel history and stories of famous heroes. I would tell that it's great for newcomers but not for old timers with lots of comics already read from marvel.
A really fascinating read especially for anyone who is a huge fan of Marvel as it does a really good job of providing a good view into some of the more obscure parts of the Marvel lore stuff that only really hard core fans would know. Like the history of the Deviants and the Eternals which I knew a little bit about but his provided so much more info it also went into more obscure history like the fact that Shield started off as a cult with members like Newton and Da Vinci. Or the history of the Black Knight. It even goes over how the Black Panther and Wakanda got started with their war with the Originators. It is a great book both for Super Fans but also for those trying to get into the comics and may need a history lesson to understand some of the more complicated lore like the Celestial Hosts and the various Pantheons.
How to make something as epic and deep as the Marvel comics cosmology so boring? Easy, don't read the comics and do as if you did.
Well, being fair. It's not an easy task to take stories from a universe that has been the same since the beginnings of the brand and has had minor reboots from time to time.
That being said, that is not an excuse for this work. Marvel comics has always used myths and legends from the real world, adapting them to its stories in very interesting ways. It also has created its own myths and legends, like the Iron Fist, the Panther god or the Phenix Force.
Due to the nature of comic book storytelling, all of this is revealed slowly, since the beginnings of the universe and all those things are not really relevant when we're talking about stories that happen in the streets of New York.
The book is weak because instead of exploring all these concepts fully, it resorts to give summaries on the most recent Marvel comics.
This book summaries and details about how the Marvel Universe came to be. There are many stories compiled within that paint the primordial existence of Superheroes and how powers on Earth came to be. I enjoyed reading and then learning the rich history behind our favorite heroes & their rivals.
The read does seem to drag on in some sections as we're told how something came to be and what conflicts are experienced by our chapter's hero.
A fast read through the whole Mythos of Marvel. I hoped to see some more explanation of the links to classical myths but the book itself really focuses on the explanation of the (I guess Earth 1 or whatever that is) history. Some parts seemed to me a little inconsistent (especially I found it puzzling that the there was darkness, but the original universe that created the Celestials was supposedly alone?).
Not the book I was expecting. Instead of looking at the myths in history that inspired many of the Marvel superheroes, the book explores the comic book origins of these characters. While that was interesting, especially for some of the more obscure groups like the Eternals, I think exploring the historical myths would have been more interesting.
I thought this would give me a true origins story to better understand the Marvel universe but you need a solid foundation of reading and enjoying the comics in the Marvel universe in order to read and understand it.
The visuals are phenomenal and it's so well done, but I'm not the audience for this.
Brilliant synopsis of a collection of superhero’s that is pertinent to current film collections. This was exactly what I have been wanting. I like comics and superheroes but trying to find all the comics in order and read them is ridiculous. This was great. Highly recommend
Marvel lore textbook for like as the title says, myths and legends. I liked the way it was formatted but a lot was hard to follow since it was just spewing names and events happening so I was struggling to keep up and just skimmed a lot.
An encyclopedia style compendium of the myths, legends, and origin stories behind the some of the key characters of the Marvel. I loved the illustrations more than anything else.
As a newbie to the world of Marvel I have to say this book was kinda meh. The outside is great and I appreciate the fact it shows the original comics, but the information focus on the really old myths, those new and modern ones and Avengers get minimum space in it. It's awesome that those books are even published, I just wish that instead of a lot of books with informational holes in it there was one that will tell us everything. You know, encyclopedias are still cool!
