Frontier Vows #1

Een laatste strohalm

Rate this book

My Review Star System:

A rare solid 5 means I LOVED it or was so impressed that I bring these books up in random conversations.

4.5-4 means great story. Recommended.

I don't post 3 star or below for newer Christian fiction (conflict of interest--I might have to work with the author). But any 3s mean the author wrote a good story, just something about it made it not a favorite.

2 was not that great and never redeemed itself.

1 aggravated me so much or was so poorly done I DNF or if I did finish, I wished I could get my time back.

Romancing the Bride is a lovely, winning story from Melissa Jagears and just the kind of writing and story that I've come to expect from her. A captivating romance, a strong sense of setting, and a layered plot kept me coming back for more.

Annie Gephart is a strong woman, willing to do what she feels needs to be done in order to save her ranch and take care of her children. Despite her great strength, she is also vulnerable. She is wise about where she chooses to turn to help, however, and that is where Jacob Hendrix comes in. A man of good character himself, Annie knows that if Jacob does accept her offer, she and her children will be taken care of. What doesn't fully sink in, however, is what it will mean for them as a couple courting after marriage. On top of this, there are people in town that don't want them to succeed, both as a couple or as ranch owners.

It seems cliche to say, but I do love a well-done marriage of convenience story - emphasis on well-done. While many of these types of stories might seem like rehashing of things that are already done, Romancing the Bride has a freshness to it and a layered feeling that gives the story wonderful depth. What I enjoyed most was that while the romance is obviously a draw of the story, there are also several other thoughtful plot points - ones that involves Annie's family and Jacob adjusting to their new life, along with navigating the complexities of small town living. Moments of danger and tension culminate to an ending that feels worthy of the characters' journey. Don't get me wrong - the romance is so tender and tasteful and oh-so-swoony, but I admired how all of the plot points work well together to make a complete story. One I wholeheartedly recommend! If you have enjoyed Jagear's previous novels, have a fondness for marriage of convenience stories, or just love a finely-wrought romance, pick up Romancing the Bride.

I received an advanced copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a review, positive or otherwise, and this review is my honest opinion.

Okay, I just loved this story so much that I really haven’t got the words to give a coherent review. Annie and Jake are such a fun and unusual couple! The only thing predictable to me was some of the stuff to do with Annie losing the ranch...otherwise, it was so unpredictable and edge-of-my-seat. I read the entire thing in three or four large gulps and lost sleep two nights in a row.

The mystery in this story was really enjoyable. The bad guys in town have corrupted a decent guy, and that bit adds so much suspense! And the author doesn’t hesitate to push these characters to the absolute brink of the breaking point and sometimes over it!! Wow. It just gets worse and worse until I was sure the poor good guys were going to be terribly defeated!

Overall, and excellent western-flavor book.

Content: clean. 18+ for some situations related to a marriage of convenience.

Thanks to the author for a free copy to read. A favorable review was not required.

I have read this one a kagillion times this year, so I'm claiming it for my first ever attempted Goodreads year reading challenge, not that I need more books to meet my challenge (since I set my sights rather low), but it's the principle of the thing, it must count on this year's list!

And since it comes out in 8 days, hopefully it'll be on lots of other 2018 Goodreads reading challenges before the year is over!

First of all, I just need to point out how much I love this book cover. IT IS BEAUTIFUL <3

Second of all, I need to apologize for how terribly late this review is. I AM THE WORST, I KNOW. sorrysorrysorry

This book was wonderfully good. I had such a good time reading it; it was romantic, interesting, and adventurous. Did I mention romantic? It features some of the best romance scenes I've ever read. *swoon*

Whenever I'm in the mood for a good prairie/frontier story reminiscent of Little House on the Prairie, one of my favourite authors to turn to is Melissa Jagears. Her writing is effortlessly fluid, her plots are engaging, and I'm always guaranteed a hart-melting romance that checks a lot of my boxes. I have to admit that I'm a REAL sucker for marriage-of-convenience stories. Because when done right (as Jagears always does!), THEY ARE JUST SO GOOD.

They're just something about two people who are so obviously suited for each other (and not just because this is a romance novel, but because the characterization is genuinely just good) but don't see it yet, and have to marry for whatever reason and try to keep each other at arm's length but love blossoms anywayyyyys because love conquers aaaaaaallllllll!!! <3 <3 Who cares how "predictable" such plots are, we're not here for a surprise at having them fall in love, WE WANT THEM TO FALL IN LOVE. WE SHIP THEM HARD FROM CHAPTER 1.

Besides, Romancing the Bride had more than enough unpredictability in the many twists and turns of the other aspects of the plot to make the story super exciting. Annie's wild kids alone are enough to keep you on the edge of your seat! Spencer was super cute, and Celia was a real teenage headache.

If you're looking for an exciting frontier story, filled with ranching and outlaws and a most heartwarming romance, look no further than Melissa Jagears's Romancing the Bride. You won't regret it. It's so good.

Where do I start with this novel? As beautiful as the cover is, the experience inside is just as incredible. Truly, this marriage of convenience story has skyrocketed up my list to become one of my very favorite books ever!

Romancing the Bride has so much packed into its pages. The author explores the way various characters handle grief and pain, the way sin can weave its way into people’s lives and gain control, and the inability to feel as if one can be forgiven for wrongs. Perhaps the most beautiful emotion explored in this novel is the love that grows between Jacob and Annie, and the gentle way in which Jacob cares for Annie even when she makes it hard for him to do so. Their interactions captured my heart!

I will be thinking of these characters a long time from now and this book is definitely one that I plan to re-read many times in the future.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

A marriage of convenience story with heart and grit! Love the Wyoming setting -- haven't read many stories that take place in this state...in fact, this might be the first one! Jagears works her time-traveling magic with all her excellent historical details. From ranch life to a small town steeped in mystery and some of the unusual duties of the Marshal. And, of course, the harsh realities of a woman's life in this rugged man's world.

As far as the hero goes -- Jacob definitely earned a spot on the swoonworthy podium! Because, once committed, this man pursues not just Annie, but her children as well. Prepare for curled toes and smelling salt moments! And he's a man of faith; deliberate in the way he pursues the Lord's will in his life. Gotta love a hero with that kind of singular focus.

Annie is beleaguered and overwhelmed and still reeling from the violent death of her husband and everything that has transpired since then. My heart hurt and my body ached for her. Vulnerable and wary, she has a lot to figure out before their marriage of convenience has a chance of growing into something more meaningful. Loved the way the romance slowly builds in fits and starts. Had me on tenterhooks the whole read.

But then there's all the sinister things going on in town and somehow, the Marshal's new family is caught up in the middle of it. Plot twists led to some unexpected revelations and I like that not absolutely everything was tied up in a neat little bow. Not that there isn't a happily ever after -- there is, but it's a realistic one. Which kinda makes it all the sweeter somehow.

Realistic look at what it would be like for a widow on a ranch in small town Wyoming to remarry. I especially thought the trouble with teenage daughter Celia to be on point.

Melissa is a favorite author of mine. She always writes the most swoon worthy heroes, and amazing romances. 😋 She didn't disappoint in that aspect this go round. However, this was not my favorite book I've read by her.

While I LOVED the idea of this story, (I love a good marriage of convenience troupe) I didn't connect with any of the characters so I had a hard time getting "involved" in the story.

This book dealt with a lot of grief. Though I UNDERSTAND grief I can honestly say I do not understand the grief of losing a husband AND children. For me personally, as a young reader, the constant pushing away thing grew a tad tedious.

Celia was another character dealing with grief in a way I never did, by rebelling. Again, I've never lost a parent so I couldn't connect.

I'm not trying to make light of this sort of grief! I just personally couldn't connect with it.

Though it grew a bit overwhelming it was interesting to try and put myself in the shoes of someone deals with grief differently than I do. And try and imagine what it would be like to feel that pain, and how I would react. This book definitely made me think.

I, like always, loved our hero! He was such a wonderful, sweet character. He was a born protector and had the biggest heart. He loved the widowed and the orphaned, and everyone in between.

On top of having the marriage of convenience troupe 😍, there was also a "coming to find her attractive instead of instantly falling in love" troupe. I WAS LIVING FOR IT!

The bad guys were creepy and slimy, and maybe a few that were snakes in a suit...you'll have to read it and find out.

In the end everyone got a happily ever after, in a round-a-bout way. I'm a happy camper! 😉
I rated it a 3.5/5 stars.

Excellent marriage of convenience story! I was immediately drawn to the beautiful cover on this book. Then when I saw that it was a marriage of convenience story with a unique storyline, I knew I had to read it. I ended up really enjoying it, and thought it had the perfect blend of romance and adventure. I loved Jacob and thought he was the perfect hero.

I have enjoyed Jagears’ mail-order bride stories, so this marriage of convenience novel sounded similar without being too close to her first series. In this book, I really enjoyed the characters and their slow process of learning about each other after their marriage while struggling with obstacles they had not anticipated.

Annie is caught in a difficult position: remarry before her “appropriate” mourning period is over or lose her late husband’s ranch. Her difficult teen daughter, an entire ranch of cowboys who quit and leave her with little knowledge of cattle, and taxes coming due all make the picture bleak.

Jacob is a true hero—while by no means perfect, he tries to do the right thing and put others first regardless of his feelings. Treating them with love and kindness, he counts others a blessing even when they are difficult or not as expected.

The theme of healing runs through this book: the process itself, giving others the space they need to move through that process, of letting go and moving on when it's time, even if we sometimes don't feel it's time. Grief is a tricky animal, and the novel does a good job of realistically portraying the highs and lows, along with the guilt that can accompany surviving the worst.

This is an outstanding book. Though not an easy read in some places, it is certainly a beautiful one that highlights the power of forgiveness, healing, and love in a world broken by sin. I highly recommend it for older teens and up, especially those who enjoy marriage of convenience stories where true love is a possibility, or those who like a dash of mystery in their books.

Going back to her roots, Jagears crafts a marriage-of-convenience story that is not only sweet, but absolutely authentic. I loved the depth of Jacob and Annie, their genuine struggles, and their journey to find real love. A satisfying read that is sure to send historical romance fans cheering!

As an enthusiast of the marriage of convenience trope, I do believe this is one of the sweetest renderings I've ever read. I love to ponder unique reasons people might have married without affection in times past and delight to see strangers choose love over self-preservation as they give of themselves to make things work.

This story takes a realistic look at the struggles of a destitute widow and the kind, practical marshal who marries her to save her ranch. In this partnership, the marshal takes on a needy family he has the means to care for and a choice piece of property which reminds him him of the reason he came west. But when the ranch they married for is suddenly taken away, awkwardness ensues. Cattle rustlers, grieving children, and a sooner-than-expected attraction clutter this new marriage relationship now balancing on a wobbly foundation.

I sympathized with Annie as she struggled to preserve her family dynamic after the loss of a spouse and many buried children and make room in her heart for a new husband as society tells her she's too soon a widow. Jacob (steadfast, wise, sacrificial, distracted-grin-inducing, wish-he-weren't-fiction Jacob) is a fixer. He tries to discern God's leading in his life, tries to do his best in a demeaning, title-only marshal job, tries to fix his crumbling relationship with his best friend, tries to settle into his new role as father and husband, tries to woo his grieving wife, and tries to catch cattle rustlers before he finally learns to trust God's timing in situations he can't seem to change. And Celia...I know Celia. I believe we all have had Celias in our life, and even displayed Celia's flaws in some stage of our character development--desperation to avoid change and fighting to create her own security. Her difficult arc is the novel's concrete foundation, the dark sky from which glows all the celestial, heart-warming moments of this story. Then there is smallest of this make-shift family and possibly my favorite character, Spencer, full of hugs and sunshine, mischief and sticky buns.

Through the years I have read every Melissa Jagears book I could get my hands on, and this is my new favorite. True-to-life characters are the shining glory of this novel and a trademark Melissa Jagears carries beautifully. As I've mentioned in other reviews of her books, her immersive, heart-deep writing style calls to mind the tried-and-trusted work of one of my favorite novelists, Lori Wick.

While all the characters are flawed in their own way, I cheered them along as they faced emotional struggles, family conflict, marital issues, delinquent juveniles, dangerous cattle rustlers, and political corruption.

Themes of loneliness, societal pressures, blended families, grief, and loss were portrayed in touching, relatable ways. Now I'm counting the days until I hear what's next in the Frontier Vows series.

What matters now, is what you choose to do in the next hour, what you choose to do tomorrow. If your past decisions didn't get you where you wanted to be, figure out what decisions will. Beating yourself up over the past won't change a thing. ~Annie

If it's one thing I can count on with Melissa Jagears, is the tightly packed emotion in her stories! From laugh-out-loud moments, to those more tender ones, to tears flowing, and anywhere in between. This one had it all!

Annie Gephart certainly had her share of past mistakes and plenty of self-condemnation for them. Struggling with trying to raise her two children after the loss of her husband was hard enough without the possibility of losing the only thing tying her to her past. The ranch she loves so much! Her dream could come crashing down if she doesn't take desperate measures to ensure a future. But asking a man to marry her? Now that's quite unconventional! What choice does she have if she wishes to keep her family together and a roof over her head?

Jacob Hendrix, the town marshal, is frustrated by not being able to capture cattle rustlers because he's too busy doing what Mayor McGill wants. Building sidewalks and running mundane errands is not his idea of what it means to keep the peace. When he receives an unexpected marriage proposal from widow Gephart, his dream of owning a ranch would come true. But will a marriage in name only satisfy his longing for more? Taking on two children—one a rebellious, grief stricken teen, and the other an easy-going precarious boy with a penchant for fun—could be a challenge he'd willing face if it meant he'd have a family. Gaining back the ranch just might bring them closer, or tear them apart before it even began!

I felt so many things through this story! I was laughing in one moment, crying the next and had my heart so torn from one scene to the next! These characters get under your skin. I just wanted to hug Anne, take Celia under my wings and erase her grief, wrangle Spencer in some fun, and sidle up to Jacob to boost his confidence. I loved him especially! He's a man's man, but yet has his softer side he shows when it comes to Annie and her children. All those tender looks he shoots her way melted my heart. There were many times I wanted to shout to Annie to stop being so stubborn and let the man into her heart to love!! Ah yes, this is when I know an author does their job, when I get so emotionally tangled in the story and the characters. When it's hard for me to form a review and feel like I don't do it justice, then you as a reader know you're in for a treat with Romancing the Bride !

Melissa Jagears completely enthralled me with her latest book, Romancing the Bride. I have loved all of Jagears's books, but this one was my absolute favorite. It was much more than a feel good story and sweet romance; it was a multidimensional book filled with struggles of identity, grief, belonging, justice, priorities, and truth. In this novel, Jagears skillfully explored how loss seeks to define our existence, and how, with faith and love, this can be overcome to give us a future and a hope.
While I thought the plot and message riveting, it would have been nothing without the hero of Jacob Hendrix. To me, he personified patience. Jagears carved within this man a character that exemplified forgiveness, grace, and servanthood. Though far from perfect, I loved his honesty and zeal for integrity. Jacob made the perfect hero, worthy of carrying the plot and redeeming the storyline. I think Gilbert Blythe might have to move over as my all time favorite leading man.
I highly recommend you picking up this book. Jagears outdid herself in this one!!!

I enjoyed this story so much that I couldn't put the book down!
I spent most of the day on Sunday reading just to finish it. I laughed out loud in different parts of he story. My son asked me what was so funny so I told him. I think I embarrassed him but I didn't care because we were in the privacy of our own home. But even if I were out in public I'd still laugh out loud.
One time I was with my mom in her office and I started laughing so hard that I fell off the couch!!

If there's one thing I can't really can't stand it's a self centered person. They just take and take without appreciating anything you do for them. I think that this is one of life's hardest lessons. I always try to treat people the way I would want to be treated.
I'm actually referring to a certain character in this book. I really wanted to teach her a lesson but it wasn't for me to do. It was her parents and God.

Her brother Spencer now I really loved him. If I were to have a brother I'd want him to be like Spencer. I wished I had half his energy!! Of course, I'm partial to boys anyway since I raised one. Although I'd love to have a sister for him. But it wasn't to happen. God's will I suppose.

Grief has no time limit. I've probably said this a million times in my reviews but it never hurts to be reminded. There are 4 stages of grief. I don't remember all of them but denial is one I know of.
I wanted to take Annie in my arms and tell her that it would be ok with time. And of course God's love.
One thing though is you never get over missing that person once they are gone. I should know. I still miss my mom so much that it still hurts. One person said that I needed to get "over it" I wanted to slug them so bad. I decided not to lower myself to their standards.
This story meant a lot to me because it offers hope, love and a chance to grow closer to God.

Melissa writes in such a way that she made feel like a part of Annie's family. I enjoyed the sibling rivalry and realized that being raised as an only child was quite boring. I saw what I missed. So not fair!!!

Bless Jacob!! What an amazing man!! I'd love for him to be my Pa. He was so very kind and gentle. Of course there was his stern side too. I guess that's what it takes to be a cool Pa. I admired him very much. Especially his faith. It was very strong even in times of trouble. Or when things didn't go right for him.

The person I felt sorry for the most was Leah. My how I loved her personality!! I felt that she was dealt an unfair blow in life. Well, I just let you read the story. Here's where I'll end and hopefully I haven't given too much away!! I can't wait for you to enjoy this wonderful book!!

I received this book with no compensations necessary. All are my honest opinions.

My Thoughts: One of the things that I came to admire from Jagears’s last series, Teaville Moral Society, was that she took on a difficult subject, creating a novel that was more than simply romance and historic western culture. And while the “realness” featured in Romancing the Bride wasn’t overly in-depth, it does bring a genuine feel to the story. Cattle rustling, corrupt leaders, gangster type of bullying, and land theft were all intricately woven into the tale. Add in a rebellious teen and the death of loved ones and you have something that modern readers can relate to as well.
But I don’t mean to make this sound like a somber book because it wasn’t! That’s the beauty of it. Jagears brings the essence of a tough reality inside of a highly entertaining novel. It was romantic. Jacob and Annie had great chemistry together and their plight was realistic. The supporting cast was authentically crafted.
From beginning to end, the religious content was properly in focus. Accepting Christ’s gift of forgiveness and salvation without earning it was among one of the greater themes, although there were others woven in.

Rating and Recommendation: I’m giving Romancing the Bride 5 stars and highly recommending it to those who enjoy Christian historical fiction, Christian western, or marriage of convenience stories.

So romantic!

This beautiful love story had one of my favorite themes, the marriage of convenience. Take a marshal that looks like a fairy tale prince with a heart for God and strong integrity along with a plain widow with a rebellious daughter and sweet son...then watch this marriage turn into a marriage of love and a happy family. Jacob (hero) just melted my heart with his wooing and romancing of his bride. Their coming together as husband and wife was one of the beautiful love scenes I have ever read while leaving the true intimacy to your imagination. Jacob really captured my heart!! Annie (heroine) had been through so much and it was so good to see her faith in God grow and her relationship with her husband turn to true love. The children's characters were well formed and there was even an intriguing mystery. This is at the top of the best books I have read this year. I highly recommend it!! Romance, mystery and inspiration...what a winning combination. Melissa Jagears is truly one of my favorite authors!

Romancing The Bride is probably the best book I've read this year! I was snatched by the author's words and thrown into the story on the very first page. The story is filled with wonderful faith content, romance, true love, action, and so much more! I was rooting for the main characters as they walked through the hard things of life. I fell in love with many of the supporting characters, and the town of Armelle itself. I could start at the beginning and reread this book now! Romancing The Bride is the best example of a "good book" that I've seen in a long while. If you choose to read this book, you will be glad you did.!

From the beginning, I was pulled into the story and the lives of the characters. I felt like I was living in the pages of this story right along with a vivid cast of characters that had me feeling like part of their community.

Annie has known her share of hardship. Yet her strong faith in God, and her realization that through it all, God is with her. She may struggle, but she doesn't lose faith. Annie's struggle to grieve the loss of her husband while allowing herself to love again is one that is realistic and I feel many who have lost a first spouse and remarried, could easily identify with.

Jacob lived a bachelor life, and while he wanted a family, he wasn't necessarily planning on getting married to a woman with children. However, he feels lead to marry Annie and to help her. He easily steps into the role of father with Annie's young son. However, Celia, Annie's headstrong, young teenage daughter holds a lot of resentment and anger. Jacob has a large capacity for love, and he strives to love others as God loves them. We see that he isn't always perfect, he loses his patience, but he also gives freely of himself and is quick to admit when he has done wrong.

There are plenty of twists and turns that kept me glued to the story and rapidly turning pages to find out what would happen next. There were moments of laughter, tears, and a swoon-worthy kiss, or two. This story is filled with lots of emotion!

I highly recommend this book. If you are looking for a marriage of convenience story that is top-notch, and that packs a lasting punch, look no further! I am thrilled that this is only the first story in the series because it means that I get to visit again with a new story and I can't wait! I give this story 4.5-stars and encourage you to pick up a copy for yourself and a friend.

I’m always a sucker for a marriage of convenience story and the fact that it’s by an author I love just makes it even better!
Annie had endured so much loss in such a short time and my heart broke for her but I admired the way she was able to stay standing through it all. Her pain definitely caused her to have walls up and to be closed off a bit and it was nice to see her start to let people in.
I absolutely loved Jacob! He selflessly gave of himself, loving and caring for Annie, Celia, and Spencer with no strings attached even when it was hard. The way he patiently pursued Annie, letting her set the pace of their relationship was wonderfully sweet. Things repeatedly didn’t go according to his plan, whether with his new family or his job as sheriff but he was not a man to give up when the going got tough and he persevered until the end.
I like how there were many strong biblical principles woven throughout the story, ones that we can all learn from.
This book was a wonderful read and I look forward to the rest of the series!

Annie needs to keep the ranch in the family. But after her husband passed away, she's been struggling to manage. Her son and daughter are helping, but they are just kids. She needs to keep the ranch to pass on to her children, but she's also tied to the ranch because of the little graveyard that holds her babies and late husband. She can't lose that connection with them. So she proposes a crazy idea to the local sheriff, Jacob. Marry her for her land. Jacob is torn. He plans to buy a farm or ranch, but all of the good ones are gone. But marry a woman he doesn't know just for her land?

This isn't just a sweet romance that's over in a couple of hours. It has depth, suspense, drama, and a love story that goes beyond just the two main characters. The author did a great job of setting up the plot so the reader was engaged and the characters had depth. I think my favorite character was actually one of the secondary characters, so I look forward to hopefully seeing her in another book. If you enjoy historical fiction that has sustenance and makes you think, then you'll love this book.

Romancing the Bride starts off the exciting new series by Melissa Jagears, Frontier Vows. I instantly fell in love with the main character, Annie. She has been through so much heartache. I loved it when Jacob entered the scenes. Such sweetness.
Romancing the Bride gets a well deserved five plus stars from me. I would give it one hundred if I could. I highly, highly recommend it. Great job, Melissa! I look forward to book two from the Frontier Vows series.
I received this book from the author. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

The bride, Annie, needed to be wooed. She had practical reasons to get married, but did not feel like a bride. Jacob made Annie feel protected and cherished by his dedication to his marriage and her children. I loved how the romance developed between Annie and Jacob. Leah was a true gem. She showed great patience and forgiveness. This is a very good book about a marriage of convenience.

This is another top ten favorite book this year. Annie and Jacob’s story will stay with me for a long, long time. Marriage of convenience stories are my absolute favorite genres to read. And when they are done well…be still my heart. This one was done exceptionally well.

I am not sure what set this story apart from others I have read so much that it touched my heart. There was romance to be sure, but more than that this story showed that love is more than a feeling, that it is a choice. Jacob made his choice to love Annie and her two children no matter what, and he did so in a sacrificial way.

I liked how the author showed the real struggle that Annie dealt with when it came to learning to love Jacob. After all, she had been a widow for less than a year and she had loved her husband of 16 years very much. She thinks of her first husband a great deal, which I imagine would be normal, and wonders if she will ever love Jacob like that. Yes, she and her first husband had problems and the loss of children put quite a strain on their marriage. However, it was in the manner of how he died that cast such a shadow over Annie and her daughter and son that threatened to rip the very fabric of their family apart.

This is a story of new beginnings and of blending of a family that so desperately needed each other and God. Their marriage is not made any easier in the fact that the ranch Annie was so desperate to keep as a heritage for her children is lost to her and Jacob anyway. And this happens on their very wedding day. Not a good start to a marriage of almost virtual strangers.

Author Jagears has packed quite an emotional punch with the side characters as well. Annie’s wayward 15 year old daughter is another strain to both Annie and Jacob, and I applaud Jacob for trying so hard to be a good father to her. This story also does not shy away from the consequences of evil and sin and that sometimes the innocents are the ones to pay.

The lesson that stands out to me the most and I want to practice in my daily life, is that no matter what we do, no matter our circumstances, we, I should do all things to God’s glory.

I cannot wait for more in this series. I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from the author. I loved it so much I purchased a physical copy for my keeper shelf, and as always- I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Let me begin - This is an amazing book! For those who desire to read Christian Romance, this ranks in the best of the best. It covers multiple Biblical themes such as rebellion, the presence of evil, the consequences of sin, forgiveness, the need for salvation, and several more.

It begins with Annie and her desperate situation. She's recently widowed but she doesn't have time to grieve as the life she knows is crumbling around her. She's on the verge of losing the ranch while simultaneously trying to handle her increasingly rebellious daughter. She realizes that she has to make a quick decision - sell the ranch or marry someone who can help her. But, there's only one man she can see herself living with and she has no idea how he'll respond since they're essentially strangers.

Jacob feels inadequate as the town marshal since just about everything he tries to do ends in failure. He can't find the cattle rustlers or the town vandals, yet how is he supposed to do that when the mayor has him doing menial jobs such as enforcing a sidewalk rule? Therefore, when a widow he barely knows proposes to him so that she can save her ranch, his dreams of ranching are rekindled. Yet, is she enough to entice him? Can he grow to love her and her children?

Unfortunately, their new relationship is immediately threatened when they learn that the ranch has been foreclosed on based on an unknown loan and the increasing belligerent behavior of Annie's daughter. The rest of the book details their daily struggle to make sense of what God is trying to teach them and hold on to their faith.

There's a ton going on in this book and I applaud the author for being brave enough to write it. It covers more than simply Annie and Jacob. It covers Celia, Annie's daughter, and her struggles. It also features the lives of Bryant and his wife, Leah. Their secondary story should be a warning that sin has consequences, yet if we are to live like Christ, we are compelled to forgive. At the end, I was reminded of several parables that Jesus taught.

Romance - PG / Kisses and references to a husband / wife relationship
Language - PG / references to a character's foul language
Violence - Warning - there is violence done to a character and although it's carefully written, it's not glossed over. It highlights the depravity people can stoop to.
My rating - 5 stars

I've been a lover of Melissa Jagears books since her first novella, Love by the Letter. This book does not disappoint for those who love her writing and love a great romance.
Annie Gephart's husband has died in a tragic accident leaving her with 2 children to raise alone and their Wyoming ranch to run. But Annie doesn't have the help she needs to run the ranch and money to pay the taxes. So, in a brave but desperate act, she proposes marriage to the town's most eligible bachelor, the marshall, Jacob Hendrix
I especially loved the character of Jacob Hendrix. He was such an appealing romantic interest for Annie. He was trying to do the right thing and to care for her and her children in the middle of unforeseen circumstances. He soon finds himself falling for Annie and not just for her ranch. But Annie is struggling to love Jacob while she's still grieving the death of her husband, Gregory.
Janette Oke set the standard for a marriage of convenience romantic fiction but Melissa Jagears has upped the bar to a new level. This book is filled with romance, struggles with grief, hope in the face of loss and fighting for joy in the middle of less than ideal circumstances. It also has lovely moments of humor to lighten the story. I'm now looking forward to the next in this series!

Marriage of convenience stories are one of my favorite tropes, so the premise of Romancing the Bride quickly caught my eye. The added bonus of Melissa Jagears being the author sold me on this book. I’ve read some of her books before and always thoroughly enjoyed them, and this one didn’t disappoint. The characters were well-drawn and engaging, the storyline was intriguing, and the tender message of the healing that only God can provide added a depth to it. Jacob is such a selfless, upstanding hero, and Annie is a struggling heroine who is trying to overcome a tragic past and provide for her children. Though there were a few parts that I felt could have been a little more tightly written, the story left me feeling satisfied and eager for another of Jagears’ books.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own

My heart hurt for Jacob, Annie and her two children when heartbreaking news came immediately after their wedding. The struggles they go through are very real but don’t get overly depressing. Jacob and Annie were so thoroughly likable and I rooted for their relationship to grow and blossom. Spencer’s eternal optimism was so adorable I wanted to reach through the pages and give him a big hug. This is another well-written and well-edited book from Melissa Jagears. I received a copy of this ebook from the author. This review is my own opinion.

Marriage of Convenience

Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed Romancing the Bride. The hero was absolutely precious. But in a manly, wooingly, romantic way. I felt the pain of the heroine and for her children and what all they had gone through. It was such a good read. I loved the ending and I hope there will be more stories in the near future.
