Maverick will release sooner than the posted date! Stay tuned.

Maverick, Tin Star k-9 series 2nd book is even better Caitlyn and Renegade are back and better than ever. Now officially finished with their law enforcement training they are working for County Sheriff and love interest Colt. While out on a run, Ren finds a shoe and leads Catie to the body of a woman. The investigation that follows has lots of twists and turns and Catie pursues the leads with passion and enthusiasm for the career that she has chosen. She and Colt struggle with their attraction and disagreements while working the case. With the arrival in town of a handsome new Doctor, the complications increase. It’s great to have familiar friends and family with Cate’s brothers, Logan and Dylan, dog trainer and friend Mckenzie, as Catilyn excels in her new career. The suspense builds as evidence mounts and the involvement of outside forces comes to light. Again I can't wait for the next in the series!
(4.5) Starts off with a WTC !!! It was awesome Seeing Renegade and Caitlyn again. Now a authorized deputy. You go girl. She is one intelligent, stubborn women. Hats off to them both. As an new deputy she reports to Colt. Her ex high school sweetheart. if you have not read book one you will not be lost per se. but you will miss out on the emotions, the family dynamics and the first incredible meet with Renegade. I highly suggest you treat yourself and read Renegade, (Tin Star K9 #1). We have a new character thrown into the mix. the medical examiners nephew. He doesn't do it for me, a little to flashy and I am sorry, I am not sure I trust him. I still have an issue with Colt, I did in book 1 and he is slowly growing on me. I appreciate the way he was putting on his big boy pants towards the end of the book. Colt and Caitlyn dealing with the past and thinking of a possible future. Twist, suspense, and the thought process of our deviant criminal is a jaw dropping, what??? Pour the coffee, tea, put your feet up and enter the Tin Star World. Thank your for the arc, I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
During Deputy Caitlyn Reed’s run with her K9 Renegade, he brings her a woman’s red shoe. Searching for who may have lost the shoe, she finds a woman floating in the river. An autopsy determines that the woman was murdered and Caitlyn and Sheriff Colt Branson begin to investigate. She and Colt had loved each other when they were younger, but a past digression and the fact that she works for him has kept them apart. They learn that the woman was staying at the hotel, but have no idea who she is or why she was in Montana. It will take a series of events including another murder and Caitlyn’s attack to establish what led to the woman’s murder. When Doc Kennedy’s handsome nephew, Doctor Blake Kennedy, arrives in town he expresses an interest in Caitlyn. The complicated relationship between the three characters added a personal touch to the ongoing mystery. An exciting second case for Colt and Caitlyn whose “gut instincts” were instrumental in solving the case. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author. After graduating college, Caitlyn moved back home to figure out what she wanted to do with her life. While working to clear her brother of murder charges, she realized she wanted to be in law enforcement. Having graduated the academy and gotten the proper training for her dog, she is now the towns only K-9 officer. Colt is the sheriff in Moose Creek. The two have a history. Now can they work together to solve the mystery of the dead woman found in the lake? Can the two continue to work together as their feelings for one another grow? How did this stranger from state away end up in a motel in Moose Creek?
Another great suspense novel from Burnett. She weaves a tale of intrigue and suspense keeping you on the edge of your seat. She writes wonderful characters with depth that are relatable. I couldn’t get enough of this book with the many plot twists along with a complete surprise towards the end. I’m am, not so patiently, awaiting the next book in this series. I love Caitlyn's headstrong character. She is exceptional at her job and doesn't let others dissuade her when they cannot see her vision. She continues to follow her gut and the clues in front of her. Colt is strong and steady. He is exactly the partner Caitlyn needs even if she cannot see it for himself. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery.
I received a review copy of this book from the author. I am voluntarily leaving a review.
This second book in the Tin Star K9 series is a good sequel to the first book, Renegade, because it further develops the likable characters, as well as their complex relationships. The story is well written and contains enough intrigue and surprises to keep the reader interested and turning pages. However, I found it difficult to suspend my disbelief at the method used to kill the first victim. <
Jodi Burnett has outdone herself with Maverick, Book 2 in the Tin Star Series. Maverick, like every yarn that Jodi spins, begins in medias res, which is Latin for in the middle of things. Moose County Deputy sheriff Caitlyn Reed is out for a morning run with her K9 partner Renegade when they discover the dead body of a young woman. Well, Renegade discovers the body and leads Caitlyn to it.
At first it appears that Jane Doe had committed suicide, but Caitlyn didn’t buy that and investigates on her own. At first Sheriff Cole Branson thinks Caitlyn is reading more into the evidence than what is there but slowly, as she digs up more and more evidence that Jane Doe had been murdered, he starts to consider the possibility that she was right all along. At the same time, her nosing around makes the killer nervous. When his attempt to scare her off doesn’t work, he makes plans to kill Caitlyn. Suddenly, the hunter becomes the hunted. He follows through with his plan and stabs Caitlyn in the back. Will Caitlyn survive the attack? Will she get her man? You’ll have to read Maverick to find out what happened.
Fair warning, don’t start reading Maverick until you have enough time to read it from cover to cover because you won’t be able to put it down. Maverick is one of the most, if not the most exciting, action packed tales that Jodi has ever spun.
Maverick, book 2 in the Tin Star K9 series by Jodi Burnett is a great thriller with some twists and turns that I never saw coming. Renegade, Deputy Caitlyn Reed's K9 partner, finds a high heel shoe with blood on it while Caitlyn is taking him for their daily run. Since it is in a remote section that would be almost impossible to get to on foot, Caitlyn commands Renegade to search. The other shoe is found on a dead body and as Caitlyn and her boss Colt search for answers as to the identity of the dead body, they find too many things that do not add up to suicide but rather to murder. This second book only leaves you wanting more.
Deputy Caitlyn Reed doesn’t believe the woman whose body was found in the lake committed suicide and sets out to gather evidence to prove her theory. Who is she? Who would want her dead? Caitlyn has conflicting feelings about one possible suspect but knows she can’t let her personal feelings interfere with the case. Along the way, the killer decides Caitlyn is getting just a little too close for comfort. Suspense, danger, twists and turns, romance, and more! I was given an advance copy. This review is my honest opinion.
Excellent Excellent Book. This book should be a ten star book I just loved it I could not put it down until my eyes started to close but the next morning first thing I finished it and wished it would of gone on can not wait for her next one to come out I highly recommend this book to everyone Dorothy Schaefer
This book has mystery , hint of romance, and nothing inappropriate. Only problem is you have to wait until next book to find the end of romance triangle. Otherwise this book wasgreat
This is book 2 in the series. In this book Caitlyn and her k9 partner find a dead woman while on their daily run. When Caitlyn and the sheriff, Colt try to ID the woman, they can’t find any leads to identifying her. Also in the story is a young city doctor who happens to be the nephew of the long time doctor Doc Kennedy. Doc Kennedy is thinking of retiring and his nephew has come to town to see if this is something he’d like to do. As the story progresses, leads are found to identifying the woman and what actually killed her. Many coincidences also involve young Doc Kennedy and Caitlyn wonders if he could have been the killer. Young Doc Kennedy is smitten by Caitlyn and Colt is jealous. Caitlyn travels out of state to check on leads and Caitlyn and Renegade, her k9 partner, are run off the road and almost killed. Then upon coming back home and checking out leads, she is stabbed in the back and young Doc Kennedy just happens to be nearby. He calls does ER care while a cleaning lady calls 911 and Renegade has the suspect pinned down in the bathroom. This book has lots of excitement as you don’t know anything about this lady and why would she commit suicide. Then toward the very end, Caitlyn gets stabbed! This book is easy to ready and definitely will hold ones interest til the end. Caitlyn is a very strong and strong headed woman which makes her character very likable and of course there’s her k9 Renegade.
The 3 heroes work to solve a collection crimes that don’t seem related initially. Renegade saves someone’s life. Colt & Caitlin appear to campaign against each other for the office of Sheriff but one of them changes their mind at the last minute. Fast paced action. Great story line and a page turner.
Caitlyn is just settling into her new job as deputy of Moose Creek sheriffs department. Her faithful K9, Maverick is always by her side. On a morning run she finds a horrifying scene. She & Maverick do their job. Start working to solve yet another murder in her small Wyoming town. She works with skill collecting clues, until the problems start stopping her in her tracks, Sheriff Colt Branson, a blue eyed Dr. & her heart. Who’ll win?
This book is an amazing read for anyone who loves a great adventure, mystery, romance story. There are many exciting twists and turns as Caitlyn and Colt follow leads and finally track down the murderer, as they deal with their honest feelings for each other. I highly recommend this book.
I loved this book as much as the first one! I cannot wait to start the next in the series! I love the twists and turns to keep you guessing! Renegade is my hero lol
Author Jodi Burnett knows how to capture a reader’s attention from the very beginning. She certainly drew me into this story by combining fear and a hint of romance within the first pages.
Who murdered Mandy, the woman who fled with her lover to escape her abusive husband? Questions about her death and identity arise when Deputy Caitlyn Reed and her K9 partner, Renegade, find her body in a mountain lake while they are out running. Is it suicide, or could Mandy have been murdered? Caitlyn and Sheriff Colt Branson work tirelessly to find the answer to this question. Caitlyn’s investigation places her own life in jeopardy and she is brutally attacked as she gets closer to the truth.
Romance serves as a good tension breaker. Caitlyn and Colt have a romantic history together, but newcomer Dr. Blake Kennedy, who is in town to see if he wants to take over his uncle’s practice, is also attracted to her. How will this play out?
I can’t forget the Belgian Malinois, Renegade, the service dog who works by Caitlyn’s side. He adds a dimension to the story that animal lovers will appreciate.
The author provided me with an advance copy of Maverick without requiring any promise of a positive review. However, this story once again had me quickly turning the pages to find out what would happen next. I am already looking forward to the next book in the Tin Star K9 Series.
"Maverick" was a fabulous read. The well-written fast-paced easy-to-read page-turning novel was filled with romance, suspense, thrills, and bits of levity. My interest never waned as I kept reading to find out who the murderer was and what his/her motives were. Moreover, the dynamic main characters, Caitlyn and Colt, maintained their chemistry as was seen in a previous novel. I really enjoyed reading the narrative.
Loved it! The plot is well put together, the characters are relatable and so much happens o Caitlyn and Colt that I was with my fingers crossed hoping that everything would be all right, and, of course, Renegade was a star! Who could imagine that so many crimes would hit a small town and that they would be solved in such a swift manner by the local cops? Well done Jodi! Looking forward to reading the next book in the series! I downloaded a free copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
Page turning, twisty mystery! This book has it all: well developed and believable characters, a great female lead, suspense, a bit of romance, and of course an awesome K9. I love the realistic portrayal of the bond between Caitlyn and Renegade, and the characteristics and needs of the breed.
Really enjoyed reading Maverick. It flows really well and I enjoyed meeting the characters. Will definitely be on the lookout for the next in the series. Really loved the partnership between dog and handler.
This was a really good storyline! Loved the part about them team roping, couldn't have described it any better! Loved that this one ended with a awesome kiss and hope it lasts for the next book!
The love-hate relationship between the main characters in there long standing attraction was realistic and charming. I like the setting of the small town and all the friendly people.
Great characters and storyline. Once you start reading you can’t put it down until you find out what happens. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series
This is a well written murder mystery. It’s also a continuation of the long-suffering saga of Colt Branson and Caitlyn Reed, the respective sheriff and deputy of Moose Creek. As much as I enjoyed watching Caitlyn, Renegade (her K9 partner), and Colt work together to solve the mystery of two new murders in their backyard, I did not at all enjoy the personal aspects of Caitlyn and Colt's dysfunctional relationship.
There are some discrepancies in the book, for instance: A woman is murdered, and her body is dumped into Moose Lake. It happens immediately, so no spoiler there. In the prologue we discover she is continually abused by her husband. A complete autopsy is requested by the police and the coroner, Doc Kennedy, performs one. In a complete autopsy, X-rays are taken and reviewed. In the prologue, the woman’s “old rib fractures ached in sympathy,” again showing us the abuse is on-going. The fractured ribs would have shown up on an X-ray, as would other signs of repeated abuse. Yet these are never brought up – I think that’s an oversight by the writer; it actually would have added another dimension to the murder case.
Also, Caitlyn’s brother, Logan, brings his fiancée to a party at their parent’s ranch. Later, Caitlyn is thinking about them and hoping that Logan will ask Addison to marry him – Addison is already his fiancée and Caitlyn knows this.
Caitlyn’s hang-up with Colt is based on two things: his infidelity ten years ago and the fact that they work together…and yet Caitlyn wants Logan to marry Addison, Logan’s boss at the FBI. Either the writer forgot this interplay or Caitlyn is a hypocrite and wants more reasons to keep Colt at bay.
While the trail of the murderer is interesting, the relationship between Colt and Caitlyn is not. While I admire the way the writer has created Caitlyn’s crime-solving mind that leaps quickly from clue to clue, creating hypotheses on the run, I do not care for her personally. As we read in the previous book, Colt and Caitlyn were high school sweethearts. While drunk at a keg party Colt cheated on Caitlyn; he confessed immediately and apologized for his bad behavior. She did not forgive him and stopped trusting him. While that is understandable initially, it’s now ten years later and she still holds a grudge. In this book, we are reminded that she has a cruel side, too. After Colt bared his feelings to her, telling her that he loved her (and really! his actions have done everything to support that statement), she flirts with a new man in town in front of Colt. She goes out with this new man to whom she is attracted and kisses him, again in front of Colt. She sees Colt and thinks perhaps she should talk with him, but she never does. Caitlyn is the personification of cruelty and the punishment she inflicts on Colt does not fit his ten-year-old crime.
This book is not a cliffhanger per se, but it does leave a lot of loose ends. We can surmise what will happen to folks that are featured in this book but apparently, we’ll have to read the next (and final, I believe) book in this series to find out for sure. The mystery is well done and there are red herrings and clues peeking out of closet doors. That part of the book is good. But the relationship between Colt and Caitlyn is cringeworthy. They need to move on from each other, and Caitlyn needs to stop her on-again/off-again behavior and cut Colt loose.
In Caitlyn, the writer has given us a character with a mind that ferrets out facts. It’s fascinating to watch. But the rancor she holds has gone on too long. I liked the book, the way the murder was solved, but the relationship needs to end. Caitlyn’s bitterness has gone on for more than ten years and realistically she is not going to be able to trust Colt again without some magic wand making her forget. And I sincerely hope that won’t happen.
I rated this book 3.5 stars and rounded up to 4 stars for the first-rate crime solving that Caitlyn, Renegade, and Colt excel at. The relationship is too awful and detracts from an otherwise good read. As in the first book, my favorite character is the Belgian Malinois, Renegade. It’s because of him that I’ll probably read the third book. He is superb…!
P.S The recipe for Caitlyn's favorite cake, Death by Chocolate Cake, is included at the end of the book. It is labeled a "reader recipe" created by Lisa Cushing. It looks pretty yummy and I'm going to try it, adding my own secret ingredient. Yum...!
I’ve been racking my brain for why I’ve enjoyed the Tin Star K9 series books so much and I finally realized it is because they don’t easily fit int a single genre…. Sure, there is mystery, some thriller elements and suspense, but there is also a bit of romance not to mention being less gritty or dark like most police/murder related thrillers.
Reading Maverick felt like visiting the small town where I grew up, the cast of characters was very familiar having previously read Renegade and the interaction of the characters is authentic to a small town where everyone knows everyone’s business moments after it occurs.
If you have read Renegade, do yourself a favor and read maverick you won’t be sorry, if you are looking for a new author/series you could read Maverick as a stand-alone story, but you would miss out on everyone’s background and how Caitlyn and Renegade became a part of the Sheriff’s department.
I listened to the audiobook version of Maverick and once again Joyce Oben has done an excellent job of not only bringing the character to life, but the overall story as well.
Somewhat better than the first one in this series. However, it's pretty silly that Caitlin still holds a grudge against Colt for what he did 10 years ago and when they both were teens. Also pretty silly that she feels they can't have a relationship because they work together, but wants her own brother to marry his boss in the FBI. Speaking of which, her brother introduces his boss as his fiance in front of Caitlin, but much later in the book, Caitlin hopes Logan will ask Addison to marry him? Did the author forget this already happened? Another issue is Caitlin acting as if she is the Sheriff and not just the Deputy, but is never called out for this. No way would she get away with the things she does in real life. And then there's Caitlin's father telling Colt that she is like a head strong filly who needs to be reined in until she accepts his direction and support. Not those exact words, but close. Hard to believe a woman wrote this kind on nonsense in 2021. I guess I just don't like Caitlin and find her annoying. I am done with this series.
This is the second book in the series. I am already a fan of this author and part of her ARC group. Although it would help to read the first book in the series, I think you could read this as a standalone. The story takes place not long after the first book, Renegade ended. There is the underlying romance between the new sheriff, Colt and his deputy, Caitlyn. There is also a possible new love interest for Caitlyn that does not have the history, or issue of the same workplace. In Moose Creek, Caitlyn Reed and her K-9 partner, Renegade come across (another) body and the story takes off to investigate who this woman is and how she ended up in the lake dead. As the reader, some background information about the victim is provided, but the full story is still to be determined. It is a good mystery with plenty of twists and turns to keep you reading. Cannot wait to see where the story goes from here in the next book!
Some things have changed since last we saw acting Sheriff Colt Branson and temporary Deputy Caitlyn Reed, Catie’s official; new doctor in town, Blake, has his eye on Catie, so Colt can only grind his teeth; Dog trainer, Madison can’t stop flirting with Colt sending Catie’s temper to the stratosphere; Catie buys a dress for a date with Blake, she hopes Colt will like and; there’s a murder with few to no clues. Some things haven’t Catie’s still sending Colt mixed signals.
It’s been a decade and they’ve left their teens far behind but Catie keeps punishing them over their breakup and neither has moved on. As Blake puts the rush on Catie, she and Colt already fighting the pull between them, have to fight jealousy, too, while investigating the murder that turns into investigating two that turns into investigating three going places no one except Catie thought it could go. Rating: 3.75stars
The purpose of Thrifty Thursday is to read a book which was free (at some point).

Maverick is the second book in the Tin Star K9 series. Normally I am a stickler for reading a series in order. I think I would understand the characters better if I had since this series seems to focus on one couple Caitlyn Reed and Colt Branson who grew up together. They were high school sweethearts who broke up when Colt made a one night mistake around graduation. They both ended up in law enforcement.
In this book, Colt is acting sheriff; Caitlyn is his deputy having just graduated with a degree in criminal justice and then take law enforcement training, as well as K9 training with her Belgian Malinois Renegade. Colt is trying to win her back as 10 years have passed since graduation.
While there are many aspects I liked, there were many things which gave me problems. I would prefer more actual K9 work and training (always). Caitlyn is smart and well-educated in her field and she certainly has fresh ideas which are helpful. However, it seemed like she was glorified with almost no law enforcement experience. I thought Colt should have had a bit more weight with his years of experience. They are a small department but they don't always have backup or get backup for bad situations.
The other part was a new doctor was coming into town to possibly take over for his retiring uncle. Again, the young doc had some limited experience. He also constantly flirted with Caitlyn and was asking her out. I normally am ok with love triangles but this one really irked me.
I liked the police procedural and K9 story mostly, the romance side was not annoying. I am interested to see how it goes with a main couple throughout the series.
