Rate this book

Review originally posted here: https://sammythecritic.blogspot.com/2...

Rating: 4.5/5

Synopsis: Hematite is a young adolescent vampire who is dealing with many things common in younglings her age such as high expectations from her illustrious parents and as well as a crush on the human boy Emile.

My Thoughts: Story/Pacing (4/5) – Admittedly, the plot description alone failed to pique my attention and seemed to reek of the hokey vampire romance fare. However, I decided to read it anyway due to the pretty cover which gave out an alluringly classical storybook vibe. Thankfully, my slightly doubtful expectations were dispelled because from the start, I was consistently swept away by it. While the title character’s crush is a driving force behind many of her risky capriccios and flowery love letters, it’s hardly the sole thought occupying her mind as she faces pressure for her other unconventional choices and preferences as a vampire.

Characters (5/5) – As I’ve said, I adored Hematite’s strong will which pushes her to defy the norms imposed on her while being a fragile personality whose impulse can give in to certain rash decisions which is what occurs at the end of this volume. I enjoyed the rest of the cast as well including Hematite’s familiar Viktor, who serves as an amusing foil to her actions, and Drunela, a sweet ghoul (or preferred term Draugr) who is Hematite’s best friend who tries being supportive and helping her other schoolmates get along.

Art (5/5) – This was easily my favorite quality as the Victorian-esque architecture, fashion, and décor perfectly complemented the story to the point I would consider them interdependent. The pages displayed impeccable light and darker shades using varied colors depending on the scene. Many of these sequences speak better for themselves than I can muster at the moment.

The expressive countenances stood out particularly in the case of Hematite who could change from looking like a huggable little doll to a terrifying entity you wouldn’t wish to be around on a bad day.

Final Thoughts: I thoroughly enjoyed this first installment and am thrilled to see more. I’d suggest giving it a try even if you aren’t into vampire tales due to the rich characters, setting, and artwork.

A fantastic story with awesome art about human and supernatural creatures that live together.
Hematite is a vampire, she doesn't like to go to vampires school, has fallen in love, and she and her best friend Drunela are making mischief.
This was a funny and interesting story, I really look forward to the next book to see what Hematite and Drunela will do for their sneaky plan.

Thanks to Netgalley, I have given an honest review of Hematite (1. Serenade) by Script by Victoria Maderna, Federico Piatti, and art by Victoria Maderna, Federico Piatti.

I am confused about that one. I felt like I was reading the second book in a series, and when I felt comfortable with the characters.... the story ended abruptly on a cliffhanger. I'm all about cliffhangers to make you want to read the next book but... I don't know. I feel meh.

Many thanks to the Europe Comics for the complimentary e-copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Thank you Netgalley for sending me the digital copy of this graphic novel!

It’s been a while since I read a graphic novel that’s not queer but have no fear, the presence of vampires make up for it.

Hématite was a lovely story about a vampire girl who refuses to drink blood and is in love with a human boy. However, you quickly realise this story focuses more on friendship and her relationship with her (very traditional) parents.

I loved this story. I only wished it was longer. Right when I was starting to get used to the characters, it ended. AND ON THE BIGGEST CLIFFHANGER EVER! I had completely forgotten this was the first book in a series so now I have to patiently wait for the next one, I guess. I really hope we get to know more about the characters in the next book because right now, they fell kind of flat. Why doesn’t Hématite want to drink blood? How did her crush on Emile come to be? What are the other characters’ stories? I want to know more!

Even though I wished it contained “more”, this first volume was enough to grab my attention and I honestly can’t wait to read the second one!

4/5 stars for the gorgeous art style and great set up to the next volume.

Being a teenager is hard. If you are a rebel vampire teen in an extremely powerful and conservative family, and you are in love with a human boy, figure it out.

Hematite, the young vampire girl, is different from the others of her kin: she doesn't drink blood, she goes to a mixed school, her best friend is a ghoul, and she is in love with the young mortal Emile. She and her four monster friends will go through the very first teen rebellions, sometimes risking a lot, and at the end Hematite will end up doing a mistake for which there is no remedy. But in a world of witches and magic there are a few secret resources... only that we will discover them in the Volume 2, which I hope will be published as soon as possible.

A very good start, I'm curious to know how the story proceeds.

Hematite is a young vampire who wants to make her own way in the world, rather than following in her parents illustrious, traditional footsteps.
Instead of attending the expected Diaemus Academy for vampires, she opts for the more diverse Wolven School, full of a plethora of creatures that don't usually mix with vampires.
She has her best friend Drunela- a draugr, for company; her poetry, and a crush on a human boy... But being different comes with its own difficulties... and Hematite may find out the hard way.

This was a super quick read with a cast of quirky characters that were fun to follow, especially when they were getting up to no good.

The art style was beautifully dark and Victorian, with a muted autumn palette throughout. It gave off a really moody atmosphere that'll make for a perfect fall read.

Hematite's poetry was one of my favourite parts of this novel, the writing was dramatic and gorgeous!

I wasn't expecting the story to get so dark, but it was a pleasant surprise and I'm looking forward to reading the next instalment after that cliffhanger ending!

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
It is that I read the blurb, but otherwise I had thought I had stepped mid-way a book. Instead of a proper introduction. There were some confusing other moments, it seems that vampires are OK without blood, but no explanation is given how that works, maybe she isn't full-grown yet and is that why she is OK? I don't know. Her obsession with the boy was a bit creepy, especially given that she stalked him at times.. even had a photograph of him. I know I have crushed on some cute boys in my class, poetry sure, but photographs? Stalking? Ehhhh, no.
The friendship was cute, though again, it feels like I am missing something. There is clearly a good bond between the girls but I wanted to know more about it.
The art was good though, I really like the style and the transformations of the characters when they went into anger/mad mode.
Not sure if I will be reading it, the ending was a shock, and I am curious, but I am just missing too much to continue. It felt incomplete. I would like more backstory. More information.

Thanks to netgalley.com and Europe Comic for the advance PDF ARC copy for my honest review.

This was one where the cover caught my eye, read a few other graphic novels from Europe Comic that I liked and decide to give Hematite a try.

The setting is medieval, you have a vampire who hates blood, rather eat vegetable soup, goes to the a wolven academy school verse the vampire one, from an influential family, her best friend is a Drauga, has a crush on a human classmate, add in some of the Drauga's friends, they don't all get along, so you have a wrinkle in the storyline of them bonding and becoming friends by the end.

Liked the characters of Hematite whose a vampire, Drunela who is a drauga and Emile whose a human, they make this one, a real good read and hope that I can keep reading more from the series.

Since the ending, seems like this will be a series, worthy of a read and best of all are the twists that really make it different from your typical story with a vampire in it.

So I went into this feeling very Halloweentown, but left it feeling very Dark Shadows. I don’t know what the plot was meant to be… was there one?

There was a definite open ending, so I know it’ll be atleast 2 books, most likely more. Just when I thought I knew where the story was going… BAM! A carriage takes my ideas out of the picture!

I’m confused. What did I just read? 😂

"Hématite" is a very unusual, but interesting comic.
An angsty vampire teen is struggling between conflicts with her peers, fighting with her family about not wanting to follow vampire tradition, her crush on a human boy and the anger that keeps getting the best of her.

The art style is very fitting to the story and I like the Victorian aesthetic a lot.
I enjoyed the way the different supernatural being are done in this verse and how they all work together in this society next to the humans.
The ending came as a surprise to me and I can already picture all the drama the teen monsters will get into in the continuation of the series.

I loved this so much, it was so lovely and the illustrations are so fitting to the story which is so intriguing. I loved the Victorian aesthetic in the art, it was perfectly matched to the story. This graphic novel contains vampires and a plethora of other mythical and supernatural creatures, I loved the issues covered such as being yourself, loneliness, bullying and even racism. This is the first volume in the series and there is a cliffhanger. I really enjoyed this but think the world should have been built up a bit more , but I still can’t wait to read more.

Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for this comic book.

I enjoyed the storyline, but I found the introduction of characters and their world to be too short.

At first, I wasn’t sure about the art. The illustrations are good, but I wouldn’t qualify them as pretty. But then I realized, it’s not meant to be pretty. Especially when Hematite loses control, she can’t be pretty or feminine anymore. Well done!

I would be curious to read the comic book in French, in its original language, to see the differences.

Hello readers! Thanks to NetGalley I had the pleasure of reading and admiring “Hématite. Volume 1: Serenade ”by Victoria Maderna and Federico Piatti, a spectacular graphic novel.

Hématite is a very particular young vampire, many would say that she’s different: she doesn't like the idea of drinking blood, she hates controlling people, she doesn't want to attend a prestigious vampire’s Academy. To great displeasure and disapproval of her parents, she attends a low-level school where all kinds of creatures can be found: werewolves, aliens, skeletons, draugr, even humans!
Hématite has difficulty interacting with others (because vampires have always been among them), but luckily there is Drunela at her side, a draugr, who would do anything to help Hématite getting out of her shell and being proud of herself.
Hématite is also in love with Émile, a human who’s passionate about the occult.

In this first volume we meet Hématite, a vampire different from the others. “Serenade” introduces us to her world, her conflicts with her family and with herself, with her being a vampire. Hématite wants to be like the others, free from centuries-old traditions and an isolationism that only serves to promote fear of vampires. Hématite spends a lot of time alone, writing poetry, jutting melancholy words and thoughts down on paper.
The only person truly capable of understanding Hématite is Drunela, the best friend that could ever exist. She understands Hématite and stands by her side without putting pressure on her, without expecting anything, spurring her when the time comes and supporting her despite everything.
She is my favorite character, because she is a true example of real and pure friendship.

In the first part of the graphic novel we get to know Hématite and her world. Then we have a great adventure and a final twist that has left me speechless! For this reason I want the second volume immediately!
I think this graphic novel deals with growth in a very beautiful and original way, even the topic of being different from others, but also from what our parents would like us to be.

The story is beatitude, hut so are the drawings. The color tones are dark and gothic, you can see it in the lonely castles or in the apparitions of Hématite (one in particular won me over, the transition is wonderful). The colors are warmer when Hématite is with Drunela, a source of joy and adventures. The landscapes are beautiful, both the natural ones and the streets and buildings. The solitary and nocturnal streets give the feeling of a gothic, at times romantic, setting.

I'm in love; I'd love to buy the printed volume but for now it's only in French! Thanks NerGalley for this wonderful read. I absolutely recommend it for both the drawings and the story.

Thank you Netgalley and Europe Comic for this e-ARC of Hématite in exchange of an honest review.

Hématite follows the titular character who is a vampire. She struggles with both the prejudices against vampires and expectations of being one. All she wants is to write poetry and love which she finds in a human named Émile.

This graphic novel was a quick and fun read but nonetheless layered with longing and melancholy. I loved the art style and colour palette used throughout was beautiful. It created the perfect ambiance for the story.

Hématite was a lovable main character who was easy to root for. I enjoyed reading about her struggles with her identity and what both society and her family expect of her. It felt genuine and authentic. There is something in that feeling that will ring true for many readers.

Her relationship with her best friend, Drunela was my favourite part of this story. They always tried to understand each other and shone as characters whenever they were together.

The cliffhanger ending leaves you wanting more from the story and I look forward to picking up future installments of this charming story.

Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comic for this eARC of Hématite.

This graphic novel is about a young vampire who doesn’t want to follow in the footsteps of all the vampires that have come before her. She doesn’t want to control minds, she doesn’t want to drink blood, she doesn’t want to study at vampire school, but instead wants to be friends with werewolves, dragur, skeletons and other spooky creatures. She wants love, and she finds it in a human.

The story itself was beautifully melancholy and I really enjoyed the emotional veil that was draped over it. I loved the characters and the illustrations were really lovely and pleasing. I particularly loved the illustration for the headmistress of the academy, and Hématite’s vampire mother.

This novel ends on not quite a cliffhanger, but on the beginning of a new part of the story and it really leaves you wanting more.

I will defiantly be interested in continuing with Hématite’s not-so-vampireish adventures, and see where things go with Emile.

Thanks to NetGalley & Europe Comics for the copy in exchange for an honest review.

Hematite is about a vampire who is more into poetry and romance than joining the other vampires in their blood diet and lifestyle. It's a spooky novel that's sure to please any, especially those interested in the Addams Family.

I really LOVED the artwork! It was almost 1800s style which made sense since that was the backdrop, it worked really well with the melancholy atmosphere. It's snarky at points, but it's still somewhat dark. I really enjoyed the characters and their designs and how often they went "monstrous" on the page. I'm excited to read the next one!

A haunting and gothic graphic novel, this is a great read for any vampire/paranormal fans!

Hematite is a vampire but she doesn't want to drink blood and be like all the other vampires. Against her parents' wishes, she chooses to go to school with the other supernatural creatures and even has a crush on a human boy.
I must say, the first page nearly put me off continuing as the text was extremely hard to read. I was so glad it didn't stay like that, it was definitely worth sticking with the book. It's quite short but it still made me care so much about Hematite and everything she goes through. I love her friendship with Drunela, it's so sweet. I really liked the illustration style too, and the colours.

I downloaded this off of netgalley so if u do reviews I definitely recommend signing up! Anyways here’s my review of Hematite (1. serenade) by Victoria Maderna and Federico Piatti. 3.75⭐️
This graphic novel is about a young vampire called Hematite who is trying to find her way in life and where she fits in. Even though she is a vampire, she refuses to drink blood (which her parents don’t appreciate) and instead eats vegetable soup which I found very funny 🤣 All of the characters were typical teenagers at school, and the plot was simple yet interesting and you can’t help but love the characters. The art style is super cute as well! It ended on a cliffhanger so I really hope there is going to be a second one, which I would devour in twenty minutes like I did this one 🥺 if you’re looking for a quick fun read set in a magical world, I reccomend u this 🙃

Well, that escalated quickly 😫😫😫 And to think Hematite's study session with Emile was going so well 😖 I regret putting this comic in my tbr list for so long—the characters are likable and full of personality (Hematite, Drunela and Berthe being my personal favorites) and Piatti's inked panels go so well with the gothic mood of the setting 😳 I enjoyed the story a lot, even with that nasty cliffhanger ending, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed Maderna and Piatti releases a follow-up to Hematite soon! 😖😖😖🤞

Hématite is a vampire from a prestigious family of esteemed bloodline. Much to her parents' dismay, she drinks a self-concocted herbal stew instead of blood and goes to an integrated school which other supernatural beings also attend. The young vampire is also in love with a human, which leads to deadly consequences.

This graphic novels tells of a dark and engaging tale. I love the many themes it highlighted, such as parental pressure to conform to high society as well as racism, social divide and the struggle to fit in.

However, it ends with a cliffhanger and I need more??!

Thank you to Netgalley for an e-ARC of this book.
