In 2000, she got married in a medieval castle in the Yorkshire Dales and moved to London. Five weeks after their wedding, her husband, a television news cameraman, was sent to Israel. Convinced something terrible would happen to him, she came up with the idea for a novel about a young widow who starts seeing angels on her desk at work, but was scared to write it in case she tempted fate. It was only years later that her husband admitted to having a bullet graze his shirt sleeve whilst filming in Israel!
Although having had articles and short stories published, it was only when Flights of Angels was published that Victoria was able to realise the dream of becoming a professional writer. Published as Unter deinem Stern in Germany, the novel was made into a film for television by award-winning Ziegler Film. Her second novel, The Unmasking of Elena Montella (Wenn es dich gibt), was published in 2007 and her third, Three Graces (Wohin mit der Liebe), was published in 2009. All three magical romantic comedies are now available as ebooks.
Her first novel to be published in the UK – Molly’s Millions – came out in 2009. This was followed by a trilogy about Jane Austen addicts: A Weekend with Mr Darcy, The Perfect Hero (US title: Dreaming of Mr Darcy) and Mr Darcy Forever.

As sweet as syrup, as cute as puppies, as predictable as sunrise but it gets an extra star for being book focused. Otherwise not worth the time for me.

A sweet story filled with romance and books. This really is the ultimate book lovers romance. Author Callie Logan moves to a small village after the unraveling of her marriage. She is eager to live a quieter life away from busy London and free of love. But as we all know love tends to happen when you aren’t looking for it and soon Callie meets two interesting but very different men. So will Callie find love again? And with who? And most important of all will she get her reading mojo back?
I was a little concerned when I read the blurb for this because I am not a fan of the love triangle. But I have to say this was not really a love triangle there was an obvious choice (well at least it was for me). I really loved this small charming village. And everyone in this village must read because there were at least three bookstores all run by members of the nightingale family. The nightingale family was probably my favorite part of this book. I loved all the family members and their passion for life and books. There is a lot of booktalk in this story especially between Callie and Sam Nightingale. Something this book made me realize is that I am more interested in the content of books then the look, feel, or smell. This was an engaging feel-good story and I am looking forward to more books in the series.

I loved this book! Any book lover who likes light romantic fiction and well, book talk, will be delighted! Great characters including an author, an editor, and multiple bookshop owners, plus they are totally relatable! Such a fun setting that I really want to visit, a love triangle and flowy writing. It was just overall a very enjoyable read! (I'm downloading the next one right now!) Highly recommended.

Another winsome Victoria Connelly novel set in the appealing rural countryside of Suffolk England. I was emotionally involved before I was through the first chapter!
First in her new series, readers are introduced to the Nightingale family - booklovers and bookstore owners. Disillusioned London author, Callie, is stymied in her writing by her recent failed marriage and her persistent editor is not helping. New relationship opportunities open new possibilities and perspectives as Callie reawakens to life, writing, and... a bookclub hosted a certain handsome storeowner ?
Authored by a favourite , Victoria Connelly, who consistently creates well defined, likeable characters and believable story lines. Her characteristic light touch and humour add charm and endear her characters and stories to readers.
The audiobook version is narrated and characterised in pleasing authentic English accents. Recording quality is excellent providing an additional and pleasing opportunity to enjoy the story via this option.

The Book Lovers is the first in a new series by Victoria Connelly, whose writing I have loved since I discovered her Austen Addicts series several years ago. This was the first non-Austen-inspired book I’ve read by Connelly so I didn’t know what to expect, but oh my goodness, it was fantastic!
The novel centers on Callie Logan, a children’s book author who leaves the fast pace of London to settle in Owl Cottage in Newton St. Clare. She’s going through a divorce and needs to rediscover her creativity, and a small village where everyone knows everyone seems like just the place to heal. She soon meets the wild adventurer Leo, who takes her hiking through the woods and cooks her meals from ingredients he has foraged, and Sam Nightingale, the owner of a used book store who is trying to start up a book club and is dealing with relationship troubles of his own. Callie forges a friendship with both men, as they each bring something different and needed into her life.
I loved how Connelly introduced such an exciting cast of characters in the Nightingale family, including Sam, his sister Bryony, who owns a children’s bookshop, his parents, and his grandparents, especially the grandfather who is always hanging around Sam’s shop. This is a close-knit family who gets together every Sunday for dinner, and the love they have for one another — even when they get on each other’s nerves — is infectious. I loved how they welcomed Callie with open arms, and how Callie — whose parents are cold and distant — blossomed in their presence.
I couldn’t put this book down, and the characters felt so real to me that I thought about them when I wasn’t reading and couldn’t wait to jump back in and find out what happened next. The best part is they are standalone books, so no cliffhangers, but you’ll want to dive into the next book right away.

Just wow ...That was one amazing read.
The whole book came together so well....from the setting to the plot and what can I say about the characters they were just so lovely and warming.This story made me want to up sticks and move to Suffolk and make Owl cottage my home and become friends with the Nightingale Bookworms....and go for that walk to see the bluebells with the ever so handsome Leo Wildman......This story is a must for any booklovers....you will not want to put it down.....

This is the first book in The Book Lovers' series and it was a brilliant summer read. I immediately fell in love with Callie, an author escaping her past. I discovered beautiful Owl Cottage, met Sam Nightingale, the guardian and purveyor of old books, explored the environs of tiny Newton St Clare and got to know the rest of the Nightingale family. The author's descriptions conjured up an entire village, the interior of Sam's bookshop and Callie's impossibly tiny living room for me. It's beautifully written and the characters well drawn. The bonus? There are more books in the series, more people to meet and love and more plots to unfold.

If you are a regular visitor of my blog, or in fact of any book blogs, love books and love a good story, then The Book Lovers is definitely the book for you. In fact I would suggest you stop reading this review, take my word for it that its a great book, and start reading it for yourself.
I suppose there is of course the chance that you may need a bit more persuasion, or are genuinely interested in what I thought, and don't want to impulse buy based on an opening paragraph, which is understandable.
It may have been a few years since I last picked up and read a Victoria Connelly book, but once I spotted this had been released, I knew it wouldn't take me long to make the time to read it, and I am so glad that I have. It is a very easy to read story, about Callie who is a children's author, who has moved to Oak Cottage in Suffolk, to recover from her marriage breakdown. There is also Sam Nightingale, one of the massive Nightingale family, all of which are involved with books, with 3 book shops among them.
Sam runs a second hand book shop, and Callie is hooked on it, the second she steps foot in the place. If you have ever wanted to discuss books with an informed independent book shop owner you could do a lot worse than visit Sam's shop. Although I don't fully appreciate it myself, there is a great discussion about book sniffing early on, as well as a mention of other issues relevant to books and book lovers.
Callie also meets Leo Wildman who is a big fan of walks in the woods and foraging for fresh produce from which to cook with. Callie's first meeting with Leo is in a rather bizarre situation, but before long they have hit it off and are enjoying each others company.
I loved all of the Nightingale family that I had the fortune to meet, including Grandpa Joe (which every time I read that I thought instantly of the Grandpa Joe in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), and Bryony who is the bundle of energy running their children's book shop and very excited that Callie is now living in their little village.
The Book Lovers is a gentle, easy to read romance that will leave you nodding with recognition at some points, and generally feeling good after you have read it. I firmly believe The Book Lovers is a fabulous way to open a brand new series by Victoria Connelly.

December 20, 2017This didn't work for me sadly. There was too much of the 'let's set up a series' about the book - you know - a variety of family members each with their own 'problem' that was left unresolved at the end so it can be resurrected in the next book.
But the real thing I disliked was the way Callie led Leo on. I HATE stories where a decent, thoughtful, considerate guy who treats a woman with courtesy and respect, is used and then cast aside in favour of someone who the woman had already met and rejected. I half-hoped Leo would poison Callie with some toadstools in revenge, but sadly no. He was too much of a gentleman.
There were a few ?? moments as well -
Did we really need the rather 'fanfic-writing' comments about ''that damned book by F M Keynes' (aka Fifty Shades of Grey) It was crass and unpleasant and pointless. (and it made Josh look like a smugly superior prig who probably burned all those books of which he didn't approve.) Personally, I have no desire to ever read FSoG - if I want decent erotica I know enough superb writers of the genre, but I will defend anyone's right to read it. AND buy it!
There were scenes that had little purpose or relevance, characters (like the lady who wanted to buy FSoG) who appeared and I had hopes that they were a pivotal point in the story, but then ... poof they were never heard of again.

Lovely romance with a pairing of book lovers
Both Callie and Sam vow not to love again after each of their marriages ended. Then they met. I love the Nightingalevfamily and how loving and close they are. Made me want to ring my own mum up on the telly.

This is a book for anyone who wants a something to read which gives you the feel good factor. The bonus is that its background is books and the love of books. Callie moves to a small village in Suffolk after a disastrous short marriage. She is an author of children's books but when she first moves to the countryside she finds she can't write. Then she discovers Nightingales - a bookshop - or rather three shops - which have turned the local small town into a sort of Hay on Wye. She meets Sam Nightingale - recovering from a traumatic divorce himself and who runs the second hand bookshop. They soon discover they share a love of books.
Callie is determined not to get involved with another man until she has recovered from her marriage. She just wants to write her books and live a quiet life but fate has other things in store for her including Leo who starts to teach her about the countryside and how she can find food in the hedgerows.
I liked this gentle romance with its interesting characters and the background of bookshops and writing. It has all my favourite ingredients really apart from chocolate. In fact this book has to be read accompanied by chocolate and a glass of wine! It is the first book in the series so I shall hope to read more about Callie and the inhabitants of Castle Clare and the bookshops.

The Book Lovers is a lovely sweet romance novel, with the added bonus of lots and lots of books!
Callie has just come out of a bad marriage and has fled London for the Suffolk countryside, to lick her wounds and focus on her writing. Distractions loom however, in the form of three delightful bookshops, two handsome locals, and an irresistible family of Nightingales!
Don’t get me wrong – I liked Callie immensely – but the Nightingale family really stole the show here, and I suspect the author feels exactly the same way that I do about them, seeing as how they return in the rest of the series to tell their own stories, one at a time. The Nightingales are loud, warm, loving, chaotic and are book fanatics! What’s not to love! But they also each have their own distinct personalities and quirks and they clearly all have secrets to tell and background stories to explore.
In this story we follow Callie’s introduction to the family and their three – THREE! – wonderful bookshops: one for secondhand and rare books; one for new books; and one for children’s books… all independently run. It’s no wonder Callie spends more time looking for books than love. Still, it appears that love is determined to find her anyway, in the form of two very new different suitors and a tenacious ex.
What I enjoyed most here (other than books and Nightingales) was the gentle realism of the plot and the building character relationships. Rather than opting for lots of miscommunications (which always make me wonder how they get on once together, if they can’t even talk to each other!) or dramatic misunderstandings, the characters spend time together, chat about their interests, get to know each other.
That’s not to say that we don’t see some excitement! There is plenty of drama and conflict, with bad penny exes, inner battles with shyness and fear of being hurt, bloody gifts on a doorstep, and even a missing person or two. But all of it is framed by a warm, cosy glow of happy family and small village (with three bookshops. Did I mention the bookshops? I would move there in a heartbeat!) that keeps the reader enthralled in a happy, easy-reading bubble throughout.
Definitely recommend for sweet romance lovers and book lovers, and whilst I generally only fit one of those categories, I will make an exception and admit I cannot wait to continue with this series and find some Nightingale happy-ever-afters!

But all of it is framed by a warm, cosy glow of happy family and small village (with three bookshops. Did I mention the bookshops? I would move there in a heartbeat!) that keeps the reader enthralled in a happy, easy-reading bubble throughout.
Definitely recommend for sweet romance lovers and book lovers, and whilst I generally only fit one of those categories, I will make an exception and admit I cannot wait to continue with this series and find some Nightingale happy-ever-afters!

Callie is looking for a fresh start after splitting with her husband and she swears that she’s done with love … for ever!
While out exploring her new surroundings Callie discovers a fabulous second-hand bookshop and being an author herself (of well-loved children’s books), she can’t resist taking a look. And so we meet the first two members of the Nightingale family, who this series of books actually revolves around. The bookshop belongs to Sam Nightingale, and his Grandpa Joe helps out. It’s quaint and absolutely perfect! Callie feels she could spend hours just browsing the shelves and corners of this gorgeous little shop. And it’s not only the books. There’s something about the owner Sam that’s rather attractive too … but no! She’s done with all of that!
Sam too is done with love … for ever! He’s recently divorced from his wife Emma, wondering why he married her in the first place. But his large, loud, all-embracing, book-loving family all have his best interests at heart and don’t want to see Sam lonely and abandoned. Even in quaint country villages, does the path of true love ever run smoothly? I don’t have to tell you, no it does not! This is such an enjoyable read, and is there anything better for a book lover than to read a story about people who work with books, and who love books? It’s like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket and settling in your favourite chair! I’m not even sure I’m doing justice to how much I enjoyed this book.
Victoria Connelly’s characters are charming. I loved Callie and instantly warmed to her. Sam too, is so endearing and as much as both of them have sworn off love after being hurt, they both have an inner strength that shows they’re not completely broken by their past experiences. Each of Sam’s siblings, with their lively banter fills the pages with humour and I can’t wait to read each of their stories. Perhaps most heart-warming is the relationship between Grandpa Joe and Grandma Nell: beautiful to read about and you can just picture their interactions and hear the tone in which they speak to each other.

Absolutely lovely beautiful book.
I love this author she writes the most calming, loving,warm,sweet stories I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. During this Pandemic my anxieties have been so high. Everyday worrying about loved ones. This book took me to place where I actually felt my pulse begin to slow and my tense muscles relax. I especially enjoy her books because they contain no profanity, use of Gods name, or sexual inappropriateness. Heaven only knows the book market is saturated with books of that kind.
I loved the character of Callie. Such a wonderful refreshing sweet woman! I too share a deep love of everything books and managed to build quite a collection for myself. I loved that Callie is an author. Getting into her head and seeing her thought process in writing was very exciting. I’d love to see more characters of the same with a bit more of a look into an author’s mind. I love the Nightengale family!!! They were each and every one very dear warm people. It’s was a very nice touch that three or four of them owned bookstores.
I became so enchanted with Suffolk and St.Clare that I actually Googled Suffolk England and did a virtual tour of the county. I read about all the things you could visit and sure enough they do have the beautiful walking meadows that Leo took Callie for walks in! Thank you for making me aware of such a lovely place to add to my bucket list.
And last thank you reminding all of us who have gone through romantic heartache that there is always hope and healing. That there is someone special just for us, a soulmate as the book called it. Some days feel so very bleak and the future looks lonely. Callie and Sam show us that even with your heart left in tatters, that special someone is waiting to help put the pieces back together. That second chances can be magical and true love attainable. For this I give the greatest thanks of all.
I know I will definitely read everything listed at the back of the book that this authors written, being especially interested in the children’s book for my own grandchildren.
Although I’m reading this on my Kindle I will certainly be buying this series for my bookcase to reread in the future. I’m always curious when other books are highlighted and mentioned in a story to see if in fact they do exist. I must say I was a bit disappointed to see that Peredita’s Key doesn’t actually exist! I thought the title akin to Nancy Drew books possibly. I strongly encourage the author to please write a story titled as such, and it being a good mystery for children ages 8-13.
I wish everyone a great journey through this series.

This was the first novel I have read of Victoria Connelly and the fact that it was a series surrounded with books made me so excited.
In this novel we follow author Callie Logan as she gets a new fresh start in Owl Cottage, in the tiny village of Newton St Clare. And of course we get to met Sam Nightingale, the charming owner of Nightingale’s bookshop, as well as the amazing Nightingale family.
And if one handsome guy wasn't enough, we also get to met Leo Wildman. Although I'm usually not a love triangle kind of person, I was so curious to see what Callie would do and say. I truly enjoyed every moment of her interactions with Leo and Sam.
As we follow Callie and get to me the village and the people that lived there, I found myself transported to the story and to that moment in time. I had fun, it was the kind of book I will reread in the future, on a rainy Sunday, with a cut of tea and a cozy blanket, because it made me feel warm, happy and excited about each page and each scene.
Someone once asked me what kind of scenery I most enjoy to see in the book. The answer is this book. I love book series that happened in a small town because I can relate to it, the know everyone and everything kind of feel, the close relationships. Another thing I love it the fact that we follow a family through out the four books, and from someone that comes from a very big family, I love stories that have relatively big families, many cousins, many siblings, I don't care.
Speaking of families, the Nightingale family was such an amazing family to read about. I felt connected to them, as if I was part of their close circle. And I couldn't wait to read the next book to learn more about them.
Overall, it's an easy read of a romance novel. A very good book to open up a new series, and to get to know the author too.

The Book Lovers is the first in a series by Victoria Connley. This book is set in a small village in Suffolk, England. The description of the small villages is so realistic it is as if you are right there with the characters. The characters are well-rounded and developed to be quite realistic as well.
Callie Logan has moved to Suffolk from London. She is divorcing her husband, Piers. She finally got fed up with being ignored until she was invisible to him as she was to her parents already. This move was a way of finding herself and the cottage she purchased, Owl Cottage, seemed like home to her. Once she has her books and other belongings placed in the small cottage, she set out to the store. She ended up at Castle Clare where she purchased a few groceries and then stopped in a secondhand book store. Callie was an author herself with a successful series of books for young girls. She had always loved books and these at Nightingale’s were no different. Here she met Sam and his Grandpa Joe as she browsed the books. Thus, she met her first friends here in Suffolk.
Can Callie find a place of comfort to her here in Suffolk? Can she find a place where she can actually write again? Will she manage to make new friends who will accept her as she is? Will she find love?
The book is quick to read and is a lovely story. There are several twists in the book which makes it even more interesting. I am looking forward to book two in the series.

So, not only is the cover BEAUTIFUL, but so is the story!
We have two (well, three technically) lonely hearts that have been badly bruised. Both are looking for something else in their lives and love is nowhere on the Table of Contents...but sometimes you find the darndest things when you weren't even really looking for them.
Sam Nightingale. what a guy! He's everything a bookish girl could want....looks, heart, love of family, kindness, humor, a dream career, and a true love of the written word. How he ever got tangled up with the misguided ex of his, we'll never truly understand, but thank goodness he's rid of her...sort of. Same goes for our gal Callie. She is the sweetest, creative soul you'll ever meet with a true appreciation for the simple things in life and a desire to please. She simply had a bad go of things and while feeling mortally wounded, you just knew things would somehow work out in the end. Don't get me wrong, Leo was an interesting character as well, and while a potential love interest for our leading lady, I was still rooting for Sam. How did things turn out? Guess you'll have to find out for yourself...in the mean time, I'm getting ready to read the next book in the series and can't wait to see what life and potentially love have in store for Polly Nightingale!

See oli minu esimene katse lugeda Connelly raamatuid. Kuna teos lubas palju juttu raamatutest, siis proovitud see sai. No minu maitse jaoks sutsu roosamanna, aga kõik oli sündsuse piires ehk viitekümmet halli varjundit karta (või loota :P) ei tasu.
Samas hästi tavaline lugu, mees/naine saavad südamevalu kogeda, siis leiavad jälle kellegi uue, kõik on ninnu nännu eks vahel võib midagi sellist lugeda. Üks koht ajas mind naerma, kus pisike poiss teeb hambaarsti toolil oma hambaarsti ninast pildi (õieti see, et ta seda tegi selgub hiljem muu jutu käigus), aga tundus naljakas. Kujutasin end telefon käes oma hambaarsti nospelit fotografeerimas (tõenäoliselt lõppeks see kõigi mu hammaste välja tõmbamisega või midagi sellist).
Ahjaa üks kena tsitaat jäi ka silma "Lugeja elab enne surma tuhat elu". Täiesti nõus, raamatud annavad sulle iga nädal võimaluse lihtsalt tõmmata sügavalt hinge ja astuda kellegi teise ellu (võimalusega naasta turvaliselt enda ellu). On see elu siis glamuurne või vaesusest tulvil. Saad kõndida kohtades, kuhu päriselt su jalg pole iial astunud, tutvuda inimestega, keda sa iial ei tunneks jne. Lihtsalt imeline!

This was perfectly pleasant. I bought it for $2 mostly for the atmosphere, and it delivered on that account: a cozy cottage, foraging in the woods, lovely English houses, several bookshops. Somehow I found myself getting bored by all the rhapsodizing about books in an almost fetishistic way; you get the sense that all of these people love books but very few of them care about ideas. My problem was obviously in expecting a pleasant by the numbers romance novel to meaningfully engage with deeper concepts like grief and identity and trust, but (to quote a far superior novel about loving books - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society) “the problem with good books is that they spoil you for the bad ones.” This was very tame, and very heterosexual, and very English, and perfectly harmless.

This was a pleasant enough read, but having read a couple of other Victoria Connolly books, I wasn't entirely surprised to find myself giving this only 2 stars. The writing style is rather workmanlike, and I found it difficult to divorce myself from the fact that the author is telling you the story, rather then being able to sink into the plot and characters and forget about the author presence.
There are also two or three examples of characters marking decisions for 'reasons', i.e. that don't seem to have any basis in what we've previously been told about those characters, or in rational/logical thought, which always bugs me slightly (and it was also annoying that at least one of those was part of a plotline that seemed to just peter out without a resolution, which left me wondering what the point of it was).
The bookish aspect of the plot was fun, because I love books and reading, but that on its own wasn't enough to save this pretty bland romance.

Okay so it’s typical of most books these days. First in a series, predictable, a lot of loose ends and a lack of a plot.
I’m really not into stories where it’s all about the romance. I like there to be more to it than that and not just end when the couple gets together.
But I love the conversations about books. It appealed to the reader in me and I thought the concept was original (the book part, the plot was very common).
I’m really not into stories where it’s all about the romance. I like there to be more to it than that and not just end when the couple gets together.
But I love the conversations about books. It appealed to the reader in me and I thought the concept was original (the book part, the plot was very common).
