A bundle of books #1 (A KILLER CUPCAKE) and #2 (A MURDEROUS MACARON) in Fiona Grace’s Beachfront Bakery cozy mystery series. This bundle offers books one and two in one convenient file, with over 150,000 words of reading.
In A KILLER CUPCAKE (Book #1), Allison Sweet, 34, a sous chef in Los Angeles, has had it up to here with demeaning customers, her demanding boss, and her failed love life. After a shocking incident, she realizes the time has come to start life fresh and follow her lifelong dream of moving to a small town and opening a bakery of her own. When Allison spots a charming, vacant storefront on the boardwalk near Venice, she wonders if she could really start life anew. Feeling like it’s a sign, and a time to take a chance in life, she goes for it. Yet Allison did not anticipate the wild ride ahead of her: the boardwalk, filled with fun and outrageous characters, is pulsing with life, from the Italian pizzeria owners on either side of her who vie for her affection, to the fortune tellers and scheming rival bakery owner nearby. Allison yearns to just focus on her delicious new pastry recipes and keep her struggling bakery afloat—but when a murder occurs right near her shop, everything changes. Implicated, her entire future at stake, Allison has no choice but to investigate to clear her name. As an orphaned dog wanders into her life, a devoted new sidekick with a knack for solving mysteries, she starts her search. Will they find the killer? And can her struggling bakery survive?
In A MURDEROUS MACARON (Book #2), a rude tourist dies after eating his way up and down the boardwalk, and all eyes fall on Allison, as the police blame her new macarons. The macarons have a secret ingredient that is so delicious it has customers lining up and down the boardwalk—but they are not, she knows, the cause of death. Allison, forced to clear her name and salvage her customers, has no choice but to retrace the victim’s foodie trek up and down the boardwalk, and to figure out what he ate—or who he insulted—that could have gotten him killed. With her beloved dog at her side, it is a race against time to crack the mystery and solve the crime before she loses her bakery—and her budding romance—for good.

Needing a light, fluffy read, I chose this delightful light, fluffy read. Along the way, I learned about pastries and what education is required to achieve a career as a patisserie. In addition to added respect for anyone who pursues a career in food, I found the protagonist to be brash and likeable. Her tenacity to pursue her business and solve a mystery kept me reading past my bedtime. A fun escape read.
I listened to this in audio and enjoyed driving to and from work with Allie as my co-pilot. The town of Willow Bay is charming and I never saw the actual murderer coming. But figured it had to be apart fo Preston's orbit where he ticked off the wrong person.
Scruff is such a fun dog in the story and my guess is Mr. Big will figure he owes Allie something more than free pizza for life.
I found it to be an interesting comment on human nature in the manner of the deplorable welcome the central figure receives as she starts a new business. Perhaps her lack of research ahead of her spur of the moment decision to start in this spot is partially to blame, but she muddles through, making some allies, and ferreting out the answers and underneath causes for some of her situation.
This is the #1 in the series. The main character is Ali Sweet. She is getting her bakery up and running smoothly when a man suddenly dies in her bakery and everyone seems to think she did it. Ali sets out to try and find out who really did it. On the way she takes a couple of wrong turns before she figures it out. But did she figure it out before it was too late ?
I listened to the ebook. I did not care at all for the person narrating it; however, I did think the story was quite cute. Definitely an easy story to follow along with. There were a lot of characters and maybe a little more character development for some would have been nice, but that is a personal preference.
This was my first time listening to an audiobook so I figured I would try something that was easy to follow, and free. It was nice to have some background noise while I was cleaning or cooking, but overall the book was not something I would normally pick to read ⭐️
Amusingly light and fluffy( bit like the cup cakes) listened to rather than read.I like my crime more deep, but this was fine to while away the time when travelling
A fun, whimsical, and easy read—just what I needed after a tough week. Lighthearted and charming, it’s the perfect escape when life feels a little too heavy.
A recommendation from @bookbub the main character is ironically driven atmosphere of characters. Considering reading more so very greatful to have had this read it was enjoyable.
