I write a lot of paranormal books for someone who is afraid of the dark. And I wonder why I have to sleep with the lights on. Sometimes life is a teenaged B horror movie and I'm the one who investigates when the scary music is playing. But the voices are calling and resistance is… Yes. I am a Star Trek geek, too. And a fan of RPG’s. With a slight coolness factor since I've been told I'm allowed to join the pops.

Naw. I like being a nerdy girl :)

This was an awesome surprise. Benny and Georgia are a treat to read about + the ravens. As Georgie settles into her new community determined not to use magic, after suffering the loss of her hunter partner, Elias, she’s almost immediately swept into a murder mystery by the new town sheriff and the ME.
Who is killing the town residents and why don’t they want Miles back in town after his stint in prison? The killer was certainly a surprise, the book well paced and well plotted with lots of humor and endearing characters. Bennie is the fave!!!

This was a very enjoyable read. The mystery kept me guessing for most of the book, and I’ll probably check out more of this series to find out more about Georgia’s background. I think my favourite character was Benjamin, the mastiff.

4-1/2 stars. An excellent mystery. I have to admit that I didn't guess the guilty party even in the face of the revealing clue.

Patti Larsen knows how to tell a story and knows how to build full bodied characters. I have no doubt that readers will love them as much as I did.

A truly satisfying read.

I'm looking forward to the next installment in this series!

First in the Whitewitch Island cozy paranormal mystery series revolving around a retired inquisitor, Georgia Drake. The focus is on an old murder, new murders, and Georgia moving to the island.

My Take
I do enjoy Patti Larsen’s work. It’s cozy with great characters who pull me in. In this case, I think Benjamin has my heart!

Although, that opening was enough to creep me out . . . Larsen does eventually dribble out what happened to her and her partner’s last case.

It took awhile to figure out what Elias’ complete role was with Georgia, and I think Larsen could have wrung more drama from this, if I’d known this earlier. I felt bad at Georgia’s loss but it was a more intellectual feel than visceral. Too much on the tell here.

The sound of Georgia’s new house sounds fabulous! I’ve always wanted to live on a cliff looking out over the water, watching storms come in. Although, these days, not so much. Eeek.

I do find Benjamin always calling Georgia “Mother” creepy. Not only Benjamin, but Conscio and Caprice add to the menagerie. Poor Benny is terrified something will happen to Georgia, that her grief will pull her under.

Larsen is using first person protagonist point-of-view from Georgia’s perspective, which really makes it fun when Georgia thinks about how much she enjoys intimidating some and supporting others.

It did make for a treat that the sheriff has no problem with Georgia helping out, and of Georgia trying not to overstep her bounds.

Built-in conflicts include Georgia’s grief about her partner and her worries about fitting in with human society. There is so much she has taken for granted, and she does not want any trouble! Thankfully, Benjamin is there to help her navigate the social waters, lol. Another concern is to NOT use magic as she doesn’t want to be arrested for illegal tampering.

It’s a concern throughout the story and helped along by Georgia’s, ahem, misunderstanding with the Fates, and as for that last missive at the end. Hoo boy.

There’s a snooty flavor in here of those with magical talents being so far above and more interesting than humans. I’m suspecting Larsen plans on disabusing these ladies as the series goes on. We’ll see . . . That question in Georgia’s mind about the limited choices of food was funny.

I do envy that magical ability to produce clothing and furnishings, and I had to laugh at Georgia wanting to behave like a normal human.

The difference between Georgia’s law enforcement experience and the human side becomes obvious with the terminology that confuses Georgia. I don’t think those of us who’ve immersed ourselves in all kinds of crime stories can easily grasp this difference. I’m waiting for it to trip Georgia up.

I like that miasma and aura thing Larsen has going on with assorted characters. Talk about atmosphere!

I must confess I’m wondering about a number of “clues”, starting with Circe, the name of the island, Olive’s belief in herself, Mavis . . . Is there magic on Whitewitch Island?

Georgia’s relationship to her family can be summed up with “thanks for calling to make me feel worse than I already do. Love you too”.

I’m suspecting Georgia’s grief for her interpretation of her guild’s lack of action. Then again, that kind of thing does happen. Sadly. It’s a bit of a mirror with Dead Even.

There is action. Don’t get me wrong. But the worst is the bullying that goes on. Arghhh!

And politics are as rife in the magic world as it is in the human one.

The Story
Twenty years ago, Miles Williams went to prison for manslaughter. Now he’s out and back in Circe.

Circe won’t be the quiet haven Georgia Drake thought it would be when she’s recruited by the eager but untested sheriff to assist in uncovering the truth.

A past that most residents of Whitewitch Island would rather forget . . .

The Characters
Retired Guild Artemis Inquisitor Georgia “George” Drake has moved cross country and purchased the old Miller house. I think she’s been an inquisitor for 22 years. Hades Guardian Benjamin, a giant black mastiff, is compassionate and sentient and can speak to Georgia. Seems he was too sweet for Black Hound Guard candidacy. Hmph. Conscio and Caprice are a pair of sentient mated ravens, a black one and a white one, whom Georgia had rescued. Elias Barrow had been Georgia’s hunter partner.

The Drakes are . . .
. . . Georgia’s prominent family. Her mother, Morgana, is Emissary to the North American Magic League. Her father, Quarrian, is Chief Defender in the Guild Nemesis. Her brother, Mattew is posted to the World Paranormal and Supernatural Forum with a Guild Nemesis Assistant Defender wife and three brilliant kids. Georgia’s grandmother, Arimanthia, a necromancer Sentinel for Guild Hades, had married the dragon-blooded Grandfather Chamberlain Drake, a Gold Dragon’s Sentinel.

Circe is on Whitewitch Island, California, and is . . .
. . . a small town with the passionate Sheriff Harriet “Harry” Quinn. Dr Mavis Fernsby, the medical examiner, is a retired necromancer, a thaumaturge. Grant. Austin Cooper, Tommy’s dad, had been the previous sheriff. Philip Cantos and Jacinto Wren are on the town council. Judge Grundle has his perceptions.

Olive, who believes she’s a psychic medium, and Holly Henry are mother and thirteen-year-old daughter (Holly wants to be a vet someday), neighbors just down the road from Georgia.

Nick Parks is the real estate agent who worked with Georgia to get her house; Kim is his wife. Dr Tommy Cooper is the local veterinarian. Mophie, an inland taipan, is Tommy’s snake. Charlie and Sue Jackson. Luke Morrison had a wife, Megan, and baby Skyler who died. Jim Collins, the team nuisance, is a lawyer. The men were all friends.

Sam Spencer is the very hunky town handyman with his own mystery; Miles Williams is his assistant recently released from prison. Norm had been Miles’ drunken, abusive father. Or is Gary Miles’ dad? Roger was an older son. Jeremiah Temple has bloodhounds.

Riley “Riles” and Brian “Bri” Gray, sister and brother, had been friends with Miles. Mona and Fred Gray are/were their parents.

Guild Artemis is a law enforcement organization with inquisitors and hunters Guild Hecate is all about foreseers, clairvoyants, healers, and necromancers while Dinorah works at Guild Hades.

Mnemosyne is a goddess. Captain Johnathan Sahtroy, NYPD, 25th Precinct is Georgia’s backup story.

The Cover and Title
The cover is a stark graphic of black and white with the dark-haired Georgia in her black suit and white top, lightened by a pink scarf around her neck, standing in front of a windmill on the right and a two-story house on the left with teal-green evergreens peeking over the roof. The sky is primarily white with some gray and Conscio in silhouette. All the text is white and outlined in black, starting at the very top with the author’s name and the title at the bottom. At the very bottom is the series info.

The title is the aim, to make them Dead Even.

Charming story; much more complex than most cozy mysteries. The complexity almost fits that of a fantasy story, and Georgia's backstory seems fascinating. There is much more to her, and to Mavis, than appear in this single volume. I was disappointed not to learn more of Olive and Holly, but expect that will also be forthcoming.

The outcome of this mystery is not really in doubt. The novel doesn't rest on the whodunit but in the how of the solution, and the character development for setting up the series. I look forward to further volumes.

What kept it from a five is grammatical. The author's failure to use commas (and other punctuation) appropriately leads to sentences one must read 2-3 times to follow. Her word misuse ('phased' instead of 'fazed') and use of apostrophe 's' to designate plurals should have been caught by a decent proofreader on first read.

Georgia Drake moves across the country to escape her sorrow at the death of her partner who was killed during the investigation of a case. George isn't your usual detective, though; she's a paranormal who worked for the Artemis Guild, a powerful organization. She's only just set her boxes inside the new front door when she's called upon to assist the new Sheriff in solving a series of murders on the former idyllic island she's decided to call home.

I can't begin to tell you how good this book was! George is a strong female lead and she owns her place in the story. Her backup team are all animals who communicate either telepathically (ravens) or vocally/telepathically (mastiff). I despise mawkish animals and happily, these are not the usual cloying iterations that litter so many stories.

The plot itself was crisp and clear. That is not to say that elements were left unobscured, no, you have to work through the clues with George and company to solve the mystery. While much of the story seemed obvious, the solution was anything but.

Time spent on Whitewitch Island is time well spent. I am looking forward to my next visit immensely.

Recommended.

This is a very unique paranormal mystery series, and I enjoyed it very much. It involves both a paranormal detective as well as a human detective, along with a very adorable Mastiff who is also paranormal, and also a pair of black and white ravens all working together to solve a series of murders in this quiet little island town. The main character, Georgia, retired from her detective duties after the death of her partner, and moved across the country in order to escape her own world and blend in with the human world. Little did she know she would end up again chasing the bad guys, albeit not nearly as dangerous as the ones she encountered in her magical world. This is a very interesting and unique blend of characters, storyline, and adds a magical twist making it not your standard cozy mystery OR paranormal mystery. I can't wait to continue reading this series!

Georgia a Witch detective from the East Coast tires of the witchly politics and after the loss of her partner in solving crimes she retires to the west coast to a small island called Whitewitch Island. Not sure how to describe all that happens on her arrival but safe to say there is a big coverup involving the death of 2 young adults and the prior sheriff assisted in the coverup. Georgia has a dog that is quite a bit more than a dog and 2 ravens that again are more than just ravens and the new sheriff seems to be fighting the "old boy" net work and losing. The Coroner is a Necromancer and is all about helping the lady sheriff and together they fight town council and the :good old boy network" to see justice done and solve the multiple crimes. This book kept me guessing!

Trying to run from the dead is not what she needs.

Georgia Drake goes to Whitewich Island to get away from the guild. They wouldn't let her do the onvestigation she wanted, so she resigned. Georgia hoped moving to an island full of humans would allow her to forget. Along with her dog and ravens she is propelled into a real life investigation.
Who is Miles and what is his connection to the murder of several men on the island? Can it be connected to a 20 year old murder for which he went to prison? Georgia feels things are not what they seem and is impelled to help the new sheriff.
A must read for all lovers of the supernatural world.

Georgia's new life

Throughout the story I kept saying to myself, 'This is a sad story' but it when I thought about it, I realized that the undercurrents of joy that permeated the story were enough to make me look beyond the sadness. So I enjoyed Benjamin, as a matter of fact, I loved him. What a wonderful relationship between himself and Georgia whom I also loved. Georgia was such a lovely character, A mixture of grief, kindness and empathy but with right amount of authority when it was required.
I enjoyed reading this book, it was difficult to take breaks from reading.

I have not read this author before, the title intrigued me and as I had the chance to read this for free I wanted to give it a go.
I very much enjoyed it, I loved that it was based around magic but it didn't rely heavily on magic to solve the crime.
The characters were likeable, I especially liked Mavis. I did laugh at Georgia's thoughts about Sam.
The story was interesting and flowed well, I do want to know more about this enemy!
Overall, a great start to a series and I would definitely read more.

If you like paranormal storylines that include animal and bird sidekicks, you'll love this book. She does a bang-up job with characters and scene-setting. The only objection was the thought of someone running for sheriff with no experience or training. Even in a small town, there should have been something in her background that would qualify her for the job. Even so, she gets some on-the-job training from our heroine and seems to be a fast learner.
That said, it's a book well worth reading and makes for an enjoyable afternoon.

Every story in this series has been a winner. This one is no exception. Georgia and her Hades Hound, Benjamin are a winning team. Just because I am a loyal cat person, doesn't mean I cannot admire the loyalty and love of dogs and sentient crows. The plot is straightforward and the premise is setting the old wounds of a murder and injury right by finding the real culprits. The answers were painful as most old wounds are and finally outed. I most definitely recommend this books and all the stories associated with the series.

Retired paranormal investigator Georgia has moved to Whitewitch Island with her mastiff Benjamin. A murder in her new home has her offering to help sheriff Harriet, but Georgia has questions about a car accident 20 years ago. Miles, the man who went to prison, maintains his innocence. Was the former sheriff involved in a cover up? The new ME is a retired necromancer who finds the autopsy report questionable, and she and Georgia are determined to solve both the 20year old case and the most recent murders. Three and a half stars— cliffhanger ending.

Loved It

I love it when I find an author new to me and read my first book by her and love it. Better yet, there are 3 more books to read in this series! I love all the main characters in the book, but my favorite is a sentient Mastiff named Benjamin. Benjamin is some kind of a hell hound, but he has a gentle and kind character. He calls the heroine of this series "Mother." Love it.

a good different

I did enjoy this 1st in series. It’s written in the midst of loss, grief, change and hope. I had to check it was the first book! But still it proved to be very enjoyable, often funny, and rather than having the background layed out at the start I enjoyed understanding more as the story developed.
Good solid characters, definite individual personalities, love the paranormal aspect. Not to miss.

I received this book as a freebie in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this story. I almost gave up at the start, I was a bit tired when I started reading it and was having trouble following the story to begin with. So glad I kept reading, I loved the story about Georgia and Benjamin (especially Benjamin lol) and the beautiful ravens. The more I got into the story, the less inclined I was to put it down. I had to know 'whodunnit'.
Would love to read more of this series.

A Good Paranormal Cozy Lite

I really enjoyed some of the characters. The dog was my absolute favorite and strangely enough, he had the best character definition. The ravens were rather odd, in my opinion. I understand their place in all of their formal life. This book could have been a lot more meaningful. A serious issue, but I finished not really feeling anything.

Life as a Retired Investigator!

Georgia had left her job as an investigator and moved across America to the West Coast to start over. She had brought with her a huge black mastiff and two large mated crows. Within one day she was involved with a murder. Great story, interesting characters, fantastic animals.

Fantastic

A amazing start to this paranormal series, Georgia, Ben and the Ravens great and Georgia’s retirement turns out to be anything but. The mystery is well developed in the story and you will read quickly to figure out who done it. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

I loved Georgia's method of dealing with unpacking - zap away all the boxes and zap new/better items to replace them all. BUT... she then went shopping for new clothes. Clothes I 'd just zap into the wardrobe/dressers.

Georgia's learning to live in the human world and finding things aren't the same as she's used to. New life for Georgia

Loved This Book

Well, this book grabbed me from page one, twisted me up, and threw me for a loop. I didn't figure out the killer, and now I want a Hades Hound of my very own. Just like Benjamin, please. I read this in one setting and just bought the rest of the series. Happy reading!

This book starts nicely. A bit of surprise, followed by a one month has passed. It's definitely a cozy read and the ending strong enough to lure the reader to the next book without a huge cliff hanger.

The story isn't depending on magic to get from beginning to end. The book could easily stripped of it and it's still work.

What a fun, paranormal, cozy murder mystery.
A little note though
I had to get used to the dog communicating with telepathy and human language, calling his owner 'mother'. But after that first shock it made me grin.
One thing that never should have happened, but did, is saying or thinking words like 'shutter' or 'snort'.
Other than that, 4 stars.

I love books with talented canines!

I found the book on freebooksy and responded to the cover. I took a chance and wasn't disappointed. I would love to read a prequel for George, Elias, and Benny if one is created. Overall, an enjoyable read that was entertaining and finished far too quickly.

A great story but the punctuation needs quite a bit of work. Additionally, the subject is often left out of sentences. I presume this is to give it a snappy, fast-paced affect, but, in reality, it is just annoying and leaves things half-finished.

Without magic!

Fell right into this story. I love when that happens. The personalities are very compelling and wow, Benjamine is so wonderful! This has quite an interesting premise, the mystery not solvable till the end.
