Librarian Minnie Hamilton and her clever cat Eddie solve a purr-fect murder, in the newest installment of the delightful Bookmobile Cat Mystery series.
Minnie and her rescue cat Eddie can often be found out and about in their bookmobile near Chilson, Michigan, delivering great reads to grateful patrons all over the county. But they always brake for trouble, and when Minnie sees a car speeding away down the road, and soon comes upon a dead bicyclist, she assumes she just missed seeing a hit-and-run.
Minnie is determined to discover who was behind the wheel, but it soon turns out that things are far more complicated than they seem and there's more to this case than meets the eye. Luckily, this librarian is ready to read the killer his rights.
Laurie Cass is the national bestselling author of the Bookmobile Cat Mysteries, including Wrong Side of the Paw, Cat With a Clue, and Pouncing on Murder. She lives on a lake in northern Michigan with her husband and two cats.
I have loved this series since book one! Checking Out Crime is the 9th book in the Bookmobile Cat cozy series. This time around Librarian Minnie Hamilton, and her kitty sidekick Eddie, witness the aftermath of what appears to be a hit-and-run. A bicyclist is dead, and Minnie is on the case to find the killer. Turns out, things are much more complicated than a cyclist ran down with a car....and the killer isn't going to stop at just one dead body!
I love the characters in this series, especially Eddie. :) The plots are always entertaining, and I enjoy how the characters develop more in each book. The mystery in this newest book is engaging....plenty of sleuthing, the murder happens early getting the investigation rolling from the start, and just enough small town intrigue rounds out the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit with Minne and Eddie! Can't wait for the next book in this series!
**I voluntarily read a review copy of this book from Berkley. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**
Minnie is a librarian in Michigan, and drives the local bookmobile with the assistance of her cat, Eddie. When two locals are found murdered, Minnie and her friends decide to investigate, and come up with a list of suspects. Both victims were members of a local cycling club, so Minnie joins the group to question some of the riders. I found the motive for the murder to be a bit farfetched, but a likable choice for fans of cat cozy mysteries. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.
I love this series, from the cast of colorful characters, to the intricate mysteries that always keep me guessing. Minnie Hamilton is one of my top three favorite characters, and Eddie is certainly my favorite fictional cat. Driving the library bookmobile brings so much pleasure to Minnie and the patrons, and getting to visit with Eddie seems to make everyone smile. In Checking Out Crime, Minnie feels the need to investigate when she abruptly finds a body crumpled in the middle of the road. As Minnie embarks on her investigation, she is also wondering where she will live in the upcoming winter months. Rafe is still working on their home, but between his job and other obligations, it isn’t happening fast enough, so Minnie needs to make other arrangements. I have to admit I didn’t want this book to end, I wanted to spend more time with Minnie and Eddie. I’m excited to see what happens next in this fantastic series.
This series is so much fun. I really like the characters and I really enjoyed Tabitha in this one and hope she becomes a regular crime solving buddy. I found the murder motive very interesting and can’t wait to share it with my coworkers.
Checking Out Crime by Laurie Cass is the 9th A Bookmobile Cat Mystery. It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series. Minnie Hamilton is a librarian in Chilson, Michigan who drives around the county with assistant librarian clerk, Julia Beaton and Minnie’s cat, Eddie. They deliver good cheer, treats, and cat cuddles along with books. After a long day in the bookmobile, Minnie is driving home when she rounds a corner and finds a man lying in the middle of the road. When Minnie learns the man was murdered, she begins investigating with help from a new friend. I just loved the addition of Detective Hal Inwood’s wife, Tabitha. She is a delight and pairs well with Minnie. The mystery was interesting. The reason for crime was unique (at least for me). There are a couple of suspects along with misdirection. I like how Eddie helps with the investigation by steering Minnie toward clues. Investigating the crime is interspersed with library duties, dates with Rafe, time spent with family, cuddling with Eddie, and worrying about where she is going to live before the snow flurries arrive. There is also much discussion about Minnie’s lack of an engagement ring. I like the cast of characters in this series. It was nice to catch up with Minnie’s family, her co-workers, friends, and the rest of the townspeople (Eddie too). I love how Minnie chats with Eddie and his adorable little responses. You can tell that the author is a cat owner. I enjoyed the heartwarming ending of Checking Out Crime that left me smiling. Checking Out Crime is a sweet cozy mystery with mysterious murder, a chatty cat, cycling cramps, a loquacious assistant, a housing predicament, and a bounty of books.
Laurie Cass has really been coming at me with the tearjerkers lately, and book 9 of the Bookmobile Cat Mystery series left me with tears in my eyes yet again! Spoiler alert for anyone who has not read this series, but I have loved watching Minnie and Rafe's love and relationship blossom in the last few books, and the end of Checking Out Crime left me feeling very satisfied with the status of their love life. I think it is adorable that Minnie (really the author) has her calling him her beloved, and their relationship has just been completely adorable and heartwarming. Moving on from that though, this had another action-packed mystery for Minnie and her cat Eddie to solve, and I am really starting to wonder about the police in this town 🤣 Good thing Minnie is always around to catch the killers, or they would be at a loss!
Checking Out Crime has Minnie doing more physical activity (i.e., exercise) than she would like to do, but she is nothing but determined when it comes to finding the killer of the bicyclist. Eddie is a huge help as usual and also provides plenty of comedic relief with his mrrs and antics. I have always loved that our MC carries on conversations with her cat and that is no doubt one of the funniest and most relatable parts of this series for me. I wasn't expecting who the killer would be, and things get pretty wild in the climax of the mystery. The audiobook isn't quite 9.5 hours long and it goes exceptionally fast with Erin Bennett as the narrator. She narrates the entire series and I love her for it. If you are looking for a cozy series with a touch of clean romance and lots of laughs, I highly recommend these.
I held off on this one for awhile because 1. the last one wasn't great for me, and 2. I was waiting for the bestie to get it so we could read it together [since she is the one who forc...ah, I mean asked me to start these so I could read them with her] and all I can say is, I shouldn't have worried, because ohhhhhhh, this was good. MUCH better than the last one [for me]. It would have been a 5 star read for me if I hadn't figured out who the killer was early on and was working on the why when the killer was revealed. And what a reveal it was; that was one of the best I have read in any cozy in awhile. And I also had a lot of the other book figured out , so that really nailed the 4 star rating for me.
That said, the writing was very good, kept me engaged, even when I knew what was going on, and everything and everyone has just really gelled for me and I feel like that a pretty solid, fun, group and it made for a very enjoyable read. Well done.
Thank you to NetGalley, Laurie Cass, and Berkley Publishing Group for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The ninth installment in the Bookmobile Cat mystery series. Minnie Hamilton is a librarian along with her rescue cat Eddie drives her bookmobile in Chilson Michigan to grateful patrons who enjoy books and cats. When Minnie and her sister Julia along with Eddie are nearly run off the road by a speeding vehicle and avoid running over the dead body of a cyclist who appears to be the victim of a hit and run. Later Minnie learns this is murder and begins to assist in the investigation. She is worried over where she is going to live as Rafe her fiancée is still working on the house and she is not going to live on her houseboat in the winter. The house it is! I love the setting as I live in Michigan and continue to enjoy this series. The mystery is solid and keeps you engaged with the culprit totally unexpected. Good series and I look forward to the next installment.
I'm giving this book a 3 rather than the 2 I think it deserves because Cass does what many cozy mystery authors don't. She has Minnie think about the tragedy of people dying, of the implications to their loved ones and even to the future, of the waste of dying needlessly.
This was a horribly slow-moving book, dragging in too many unimportant sub-plots and too many indulgent conversations with Eddie. If it had been cut by 75-100 pages, it would have been far more interesting.
I love a visit to Chilson, Michigan with Minnie Hamilton and her bookmobile. Minnie is the town librarian and drives the bookmobile. She is driving the bookmobile back to the library when she comes across a body in the road. She tries to save the person but is not successful. She looks into the murder with a new friend of hers, I have to say I loved the addition of Tabitha. She is Detective Inwood's wife and it was so great to finally meet her. I loved her personality. I thought she fit in so well with the town and all its quirky characters. The mystery aside there were so many wonderful moments in this book. The mystery was well done and didn't figure out the killer until the end. Also as always, Minnie's cat, Eddie, steals the book. He is such a character. I love how Minnie talks to him. I can't wait to read more in this series.
Seemed to move along better than the previous one in the series, but I wasn't convinced by the motive for the crime: or at least why that would have led to murder. That may be because I read Quite Ugly One Morning only recently
On the bookmobile, librarian, Minnie Hamilton, her co-worker, and her cat Eddie, swerve to avoid a speeding car and a short piece down the road discover the body of a bicyclist. Solving the murder gets added to Minnie's to-do list along with finding more staffing for the bookmobile and worrying if her house will be ready before the Minnesota weather forces her to move off the houseboat. Good characters and a lively plot will keep reading the latest in this enjoyable series. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Set in autumn in Upper Michigan, Minnie the librarian is driving the bookmobile when she discovers a dead body in the middle of nowhere. Together with her absolutely lovely friends and townsfolk (and the companionship of her very vocal cat, Eddie), she launches an investigation that takes her right into the crosshairs of a killer.
The bookmobile brought back amazing childhood memories, the bike rides made my legs ache in sympathy, the elaborate meals made my mouth water, and Eddie the cat had me in stiches. The mystery was always at the forefront and came to a very satisfying conclusion after investigating a variety of potential suspects and motives. All of the subplots were neatly resolved with a flourish.
I highly recommend Checking Out Crime for anyone in need of a safe vacation with new friends (and don’t we all need that???)
This has been one of my all-time favorite cozy mystery series since Eddie’s first Mrr in the first novel! The author has taken an intelligent, slightly introverted library professional and plunked her into the beautiful NW lower peninsula of Michigan with her beloved Aunt Frances, a cat’s cat, new and summer childhood friends, and a bookmobile. Each time I read a new novel in the series, there are new things to learn about the characters, and endearing new behaviors from Eddie. Eddie is the tabby cat that adopted Minnie when she first came to Chilson to be the assistant director at the library. There is also a fresh, new, complex mystery that Minnie gets involved with.
The variety of well-defined, 3-D personalities, all of whom fit together well, are fabulous. Minnie’s recently re-married Aunt Frances, her new friend Tabitha, and long-time besties Rafe and Kristen, are among those closest to her. I enjoy each of them as well as Eddie’s cat-sonality. The first time he chose to go home with Minnie, nothing would dissuade him, and his traits include some I‘ve enjoyed in cats I’ve been owned by. I would welcome Minnie as a friend, co-worker, or neighbor, and love her conversations with Eddie.
Eddie has been a regular on the bookmobile since he snuck on board for the inaugural trip. Children and adults alike enjoy visiting Eddie as much as looking for new books. Julia, a retired stage actress, is intelligent, personable, and a great bookmobile clerk. Minnie loves the bookmobile days of her week best due to being able to help the patrons they serve and Julia’s company. They didn’t plan to find a man lying in the street this cool September evening, or that the man was beyond CPR before Minnie attempted it. Nor did they expect the man, clad in bicycle riding gear, had been murdered, although they did find his bicycle and helmet hidden nearby.
The sheriff’s office is used to Minnie’s her help, especially her ex-boyfriend Ash, now in training to be a detective, and Hal, the once-retired detective from downstate. The only difference now is that they have seen her abilities to learn useful information, although she may have taken research to the limit this time as she begins to ride with bicycle enthusiasts who bike together for enjoyment and companionship. Within days, another woman is found dead, this time with her bicycle visible near her.
This mystery has unique elements, including a motive that almost eluded me. There are plot twists and turns that kept me engaged. Minnie doesn’t miss a beat of investigating, even with challenges at the library or wondering where she will live in a couple weeks when it is too cold to stay on her houseboat. While I did figure out the solution, I was surprised to have done so! The end is fully satisfying, with all loose ends tied up and a couple big surprises from her besties. I highly recommend this to those who appreciate well-written cozy mysteries, cats, libraries, and amazing characters.
From a thankful heart: I received a complimentary copy of this novel, and this is my honest review.
Hard to believe we've been on the bookmobile with librarian Minnie and Eddie nine times already. "Checking Out Crime" is the latest Bookmobile Cat mystery by Laurie Cass. This time out, they run into, almost literally, a member of the local biking club, who is dead in the road. Minnie starts to sleuth, and soon has a second biker's death to investigate. She also has her hands full trying to get her future home in order so that she and her fiancé can get married before the snow flies. Since it's October, and she's in Michigan, time's running out.
Eddie, as usual, helps her find clues, and steers her down the right (bike) path. Minnie also has a new sleuthing buddy, who I hope will be in future installments, as she's a great addition to the series.
I'll frankly admit that Minnie's emotional outbursts in the last couple of books had begun to grate a bit. She's still gets a bit feisty in this one, and excuses it by saying it's "normal" behavior, but it was much toned down in this story.
The story itself was good, and I enjoy how Minnie interacts with her friends, family, and the community. She's very much an integral part of the town of Chilson's fabric, and is more of a liaison than a busybody.
The plot? Well, the motive for the murders was a bit far-fetched, and unsatisfying, but the characters balanced out the story and this was an enjoyable read.
I received an advance copy from NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group in exchange for my honest review.
Checking Out Crime by Laurie Cass (A Bookmobile Cat Mystery #9) 5 stars or 5 paws
Can you be a victim of your own success? Minnie Hamilton and the Library bookmobile may be too successful, because there are patrons that are asking for more stops. After a very long day, Minnie and her part-time assistant Julia are driving back home, when a car nearly forces them off the road. After avoiding collision, Minnie nearly runs over a body on the road. Minnie tries to perform CPR, but the victim is already dead. This sets up a story that will have more dead bodies, mysterious motives and several suspects. In the midst of these events, Minnie will also have to deal with a change of abode (finally moving in with her fiancee) and additional work pressure.
This is the next book in this series following 2020 "Gone with the Whisker". It is always great to visit this world and I enjoy my annual visit. The plot had a few twists and turns that I didn't expect. I suspected the killer about 3/4 into the book. As always the dialogue between Minnie and Eddie, her cat was a fun part of the book. What Eddie can say with a "Mrrr" is extraordinary. This series just keeps getting better and better and I hope the wedding will happen in the next book.
Thank you Netgalley and Berkeley Publishing Group for this ARC.
I adore this cover! I bought the book and then saved it for autumn to read, once the weather cooled down a little. How could I resist?
Really delightful addition to the series. I've enjoyed all of these books even though most cozies don't work for me these days, but I did think the series dragged a bit for a while. Minnie seemed stuck in a too-routine life. At one point she got engaged and then the next book hardly even mentioned her fiance. This are changing now, as she spends a few scenes with Rafe and is constantly worrying whether the house he's renovating will be ready for their wedding. She's also made a new friend or two, including Detective Hal Inwood's wife, who is great fun. Then there's the problem of how to increase the bookmobile hours when the board won't let them hire more help. So Minnie's personal life has become interesting again, it's not simply the mystery to read about. Hurray!
Of course you could read this series out of order as each mystery stands alone, but it's lot more fun to start at the beginning and watch people's lives unfold in the books.
Love cozy mysteries and cats? Well then you're going to want to add this series to your to read list. It's fantastic!---- Minnie Hamilton is the town's bookmobile librarian near Chilson, Michigan. The town's folk always look forward to the books she brings. Things are going so well that her boss wants to add more hours. I loved seeing her relationship with her rescue cat Eddie and his endless chorus of Mrrr's. His cattitude will have you purring with delight. He's got his own mind and does what he wants. While Minnie is all for bringing the books to those who want them but when she stumbles upon the body of a bicyclist whom she assumes is on the receiving end of a hit and run accident after she sees a car speeding from the scene. She is doggedly determined to get to the bottom of this case. Fast past very enjoyable book! #CheckingOutCrime #NetGalley
Pub Date 06 Apr 2021 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is a mass market I borrowed from the library, but I had purchased the previous books in the series - I love them from the start! A different plot, but excellent, and Minnie (with some help from cat Eddie) and a new, awesome character do the sleuthing. If you love books, libraries, librarians, bookmobiles, cats, small towns, Michigan, and plain old well-written, well-paced cozies, give this series a try! The books stand alone, but I always suggest reading a series in order - no matter how many or few titles there are.
Really about a 3.5. It was a solid entry in the series but not outstanding. I figured out a lot of things way too early. On the plus side, I really like the new character Tabitha and I'm pleased that a lot of things have been settled. It looks as if everyone is moving ahead and there will be some minor changes as characters move forward. I'll certainly be reading the next one when it comes out this fall.
