Just one more chapter.. just one more chapter.. then I finished the book in one sitting. All the stars. Quinn and Tanner were everything. This book came to me right when I needed it. Tanner is dealing with his demons and Quinn is dealing with an internet stalker. After a meeting on an overseas tour, Quinn and Tanner meet again and this time Tanner is a civilian trying to make it out of the military. When he comes home, his support system is lacking, at best, so he is forced to figure things out on his own. A chance encounter with Quinn and her band has him acting as security while trying to fight the feelings he has for her because falling for your boss is frowned upon, espeically when you have so many issues of your own. There's one thing Tanner does know how to do, and he does it well, Serve and Protect. Quinn is the lead singer of a new up and coming band, but she isn't so fond of the limelight. With fame comes pressure, and also stalkers apparently. Can these two be just what the other needs? This is a great story of healing, hope and faith with a little comedic relief thrown in there to balance out the heavy. Aly and Hazel as a duo just made this book all the more emotional because you can see both of their writing shine through in each of these characters. Tanner's struggles are real and I'm so glad that Hazel is here to tell us all about real life after the military. It is such an eye opener and it hits you right in the gut because you know they have been experienced first hand. This book is a grea military romance, rocker romance, just all and all emotional roller coaster that you don't want to miss.
5 star review of Guarding Shadows (Save Me #5) by Aly Stiles & Hazel James
Wow, I am not sure where to start with this review. Guarding Shadows was at times an emotional roller coaster of a read that was well written and drew me in and held me captive from the start. I have read both Aly Stiles and Hazel James separately but together these to are a fabulous writing duo. I have no idea where one stopped and the other started or who wrote what, such was their seamless style of writing. Quinn Wylder is now a famous rock star and with it comes the crazy. Tanner Clarke is hired to be her security to protect her from the crazy that she has attracted, he was medically retired from the service after injury and PTSD sidelined him. This book will touch you on numerous levels, it was an emotional love story that drew me in and wouldn’t let me go. I really loved Quinn and Tanner, both separately and together. They brought out the best in one another and showed the reader that if you are brave enough to face your fears, you can overcome anything. It is a story of looking deep into yourself and discovering that what you find is good enough.
It is a story that shows that we are all human and that how we react is not always the same and that if you believe in yourself then you can achieve anything you set your mind on. When Quinn and Tanner get together they support one another and become invincible.
This book is an emotional little gem, one click I don’t think you will be disappointed.
Wow. Just wow. I just finished this amazing book and I am shook! There is more than one hero in this book. Tanner and Quinn have a story that I am so happy it was told. I am so thankful that I was able to read this book early. I needed this story. It’s such a great story of triumph, self worth, love, and finding your bravery when you need it most. I’m in awe of their words. It will stay on my heart forever. It’s simply perfect. Thank you so much to you both for allowing me to come into this world of endurance and love. I’m forever grateful. Make sure you add it to your TBR and be ready for its release on April 23rd. Trust me, you need to! Now I will eat all the chocolate! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’m so in love with each of these authors separately, and together, they are a force to be reckoned with! You’d never know this was co-written, it was done so seamlessly.
Guarding Shadows had all the depth, all the emotion, and the beautiful voice that I’ve come to covet with Hazel and Aly’s books, with some angst sprinkled in as an added bonus.
It’s like the love child of Ashton Morgan, Genevieve Fox (Breaking South), and Chased/Saved. These authors have created something truly special and unique- I can say, without a doubt, that I’ve never read a rocker-military romance before. It WORKED, people. You’re going to love it.
To be honest, I didn't know how this collab of authors is going to write the story. I'm pretty familiar with Aly's writings, but this is the first time I've read anything by Hazel. But it was pretty seamless. And it was beyond amazing! Tanner and Quinn's story is an emotional roller coaster. Everything about these two was just beautiful and heartwarming. Pretty sure this is my favourite book out of the series now.
Wow. Just wow. I'm part of a military family, and the PTSD stuff is spot on. So is the medical marijuana stuff, which I have to say is fantastically written. It all is, but that part really helped me understand why it is truly needed from a medical standpoint. As far as the story itself, the entire thing was phenomenal.
I was waiting in great anticipation for the arrival of Guarding Shadows and as usual Aly did not disappoint me with this incredible and special story co written with Hazel James. Once I started it I was totally engulfed by the emotions portrayed and though I have thankfully never experienced PTSD the story was so realistic that I was breathless as I read some scenes wondering what horrors might unfold.
I fell deeply in like with Tanner Clarke, how lucky was Quinn to have met this wonderful man. So selfless in his actions with his fellow soldiers but so misunderstood and unappreciated by his family and society which left this amazing army vet homeless and living in his truck. Thanks be to the rock and roll gods that Tanner made such an impression on Quinn that she knew he was the perfect person to protect her from whoever was stalking her and that Tanner knew that he was not getting charity but that he was really needed.
It is like watching a flower bloom as Tanner slowly unfolds the layers of his personality good and bad as he falls for Quinn knowing that she is the special person who is going to change his life for the good. Quinn knows she is falling in love with him but she also knows that he is hard to reach because of the suffering he has gone through. She helps him in the only ways that she can, trying to share his burden by listening and helping him to face his demons while being careful not to set off any of his triggers.
Whew talk about sizzling hot!! The scenes that lead up to them actually doing the deed were so steamy that my glasses fogged up!! But they were written with such feeling and empathy for the man who had to learn to trust again after his marriage ended.
Tanner's struggle is front and centre in this story, but Quinn is fighting her own demons and they are so able to help each other with true caring and for Tanner applying a lot of his military training particularly as the story hits it's totally unforseen climax. Though I felt the emotions of this story in my gut I was so pleased with myself that I was not in tears, that's until the ending. At that point there was not holding back!
I say this often because Aly is such an amazing writer but this is definitely one of her best books. Writing with Hazel James has taken things to another level of brilliance. Though this is part of the Save Me series it it totally stand alone so need to read the previous books but you really should!
“I’d rather sit with you in your darkness than be alone in the light.” I mean seriously?? Swoon. Who doesn’t want someone who is willing to sit in the dark with you when things are bad? Who doesn’t want someone who will love you despite the shadows? I know many who would. We all crave that interaction that connection to someone who chooses to love you every day without regrets. This is the story of Quinn, a rising star and Tanner, a medically retired army sergeant who is trying to make it on the outside.
Tanner lives in the shadows. All he’s ever really known is the Army and he had no plans of retiring so young. I guess being injured and enduring a catastrophic loss will do that to you. During one of his final tours, he meets Quinn. She is an upcoming rock star and human sunshine. She brings some light to Tanner's dire existence. Quinn can’t forget the handsome Army Sergeant that showed her around base and a small town. She has stored those memories away for when she’s on the road. When Tanner finds himself back stateside and struggling a friend throws him a ticket to see Detour Wylder which is Quinn’s new band. It’s here they reconnect, and Quinn offers him an opportunity of a lifetime and a lifeline he desperately needed and in return he gives Quinn the bravery and drive to take her band to the next level.
Seriously!! My heart!! It broke a few times for Tanner. I don’t have any experience with how the armed forces treat their veterans but it’s sad how they do according to Guarding Shadows. You see Aly Stiles and Hazel James have a story in the beginning on how this story was written and it’s nothing short of amazing. They weaved past bands and past worlds and real life experiences into this book. I loved Tanner and Quinn reminded me of my daughter with her optimism and sunshine personality. I also don’t wish a happy ever after for Donovan and Muffin you can suck it. I even liked the band and all their quirky members. Once again another winner in my book.
I just can’t find the words to do this story justice. All the feels, all the angst, all the #RockstarRomance we love! Aly Stiles & Hazel James have taken a story and mixed in versions of reality to create a soulful, touching and heart breaking romance. Guarding Shadows combines the lead singer/guitarist for an up-and-coming band with an Army veteran. Tanner and Quinn’s journey will leave you holding your breath as you see them navigate the uncertain waters of Tanner’s demons, Quinn’s rising stardom, and possible stalker.
A chance meeting between internet sensation Quinn Wylder of the band Detour Wylder and Sergeant Tanner Clarke have sparks flying. Tanner serves as her tour guide as she spends the day at the military base in Germany and then entertains the troops. He is fascinated and drawn to her.
There is so much about Tanner to love. He is dedicated and kind. As he is forced to accept medical retirement the adjustment to civilian life proves to be a challenge. He feels guilty, terrified and haunted.
“Homeless” and “hopeless” are only one letter apart, and right now they mean the same thing.
Quinn, oh beautiful Quinn. She has such an amazing heart. Open and inviting. Her approach to life will leave you smiling. She is so perceptive. So full of love. So giving and hopeful. It is no wonder that Tanner fell hard for her! Their chemistry together is explosive!
Guarding Shadows is so well written. Aly Stiles gives a short explanation in the beginning of the book that sheds light on why they chose a veteran and what the connection to the story is. Some of the content is heavy and angsty but does not come off that way at all. It just takes your heart and rips it apart. I loved the end. Without spoilers it was JUST.SO.GOOD! Aly Stiles & Hazel James – you can collaborate anytime and I will read it!
Reassurance is a funny thing. Sometimes the words don’t matter as much as the person saying them…
Guarding Shadows is the blend of two of my favourite genres of romance - military and rockstar.
This is the story of Quinn Wylder and Tanner Clarke. Tanner and Quinn meet shortly before Tanner is due to be medically discharged from the Army. Quinn is on a European tour with her new band and agrees to do an interview while in Germany.
Fast forward, and Tanner is now living as a civilian except thanks to his diagnosis of PTSD as well as his physical troubles, is struggling to find his way in this new world. With very little support from his family and the VA, Tanner hits a really hard patch.
Quinn is touring the US with her band and has started receiving these really threatening messages. At first she wasn’t worried but now they are escalating and she’s starting to fear the worst could happen. She remembers her encounter with Tanner and seeks him out. Tanner is so happy to hear from Quinn that when she asks for his help in protecting her and the band, he couldn’t agree fast enough.
This story will not only touch your heart but your soul as well. These two authors truly shine a light on what a veteran who has PTSD really experiences in their day to day life. I loved reading this book and the message it portrays will absolutely stay with me for quite some time.
I stayed up far too late because I could not stop reading this book! I cried. I laughed. I loved every minute of it. It's so real. The characters, the story, all of it. Tanner is trying to adjust to civilian life but he's got barely any support system and he's not handling life well. I could relate to him and felt for him so much. Quinn was awesome too. Such a little ray of sunshine and I loved it. She's got such a big heart. I loved that they helped each other and grew together. And shout out to this book normalizing therapy and showing a character going through it! It's really well written too! I think the best cowritten books are the ones where you can't tell who wrote what, and that's definitely the case here. It's all so smooth and flows so well.
If you're looking for a book you won't be able to put down, and one that will make you feel the entire range of emotions, you definitely need to read this one!!
This story is an astonishing one! Rich, but mixed with sparks of rawness. Fierce, and so very emotional.
Tanner is a man to be admired, and Quinn an insecure sweetheart.
These two authors came out blazing and have delivered this beautiful, versatile story with so much maturity! I was addicted to it and I could not stop reading. There was just so much that kept me invested from page one and all the way to the end. When I thought all was right and there was nothing else that could go wrong, I got thrown in for yet another whirlwind of experience.
This writing duo sure knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat.
I knew going into Guarding Shadows that my heart and mind were going to take a hit, but the ache in my soul was devastating. So many different feelings concerning both Tanner’s history and his current situation had me in deep thoughts about what so many veterans and their families are going through.
The co-writers of this book did an exceptional job in writing all aspects of this story. The conflicts, the emotions and the chemistry between Tanner and Quinn. Especially powerful was Quinn’s reaction to Tanner and his condition and her response to it.
I highly recommend this book for all the emotions it will bring to your life. 5 Stars #2OCCMS
'Guarding Shadows' by Aly Stiles is beautiful. It was hard not to cry and laugh as Tanner and Quinn's story progressed. I absolutely loved the plot and chacters of the story. I will definitely be putting this on my reread list! 5/5 stars
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
While I don't always love instalove, this story had more heart than most! Tanner's return to civilian so realistic that I truly felt the emotions on the page. I loved that he and Quinn met each other while he was stationed abroad and then reconnected when she was on tour in his hometown - almost like they were fated.
The "bad guys" were a surprise - not the people I thought the whole time - and I loved the care that Tanner showed for Quinn in trying to protect her. This one had all the found family vibes because Tanner sure needed it - his actual family is TERRIBLE.
This was the 5th book in the series, but it was definitely readable as a standalone!
I am a chaos of all the emotions. This book, oh my, it is so needed. Hazel and Aly thank you. I did not want it to end and I still want more.
Tanner and Quinn’s story is so heartbreakingly moving, it takes us to places most may never understand but gives us that understanding is such a clear and poignant way. Definitely, showing us how fate can bring souls together and how we never truly know what is going on inside a person until we sit in their silence with them.
This book broke my heart and mended it too. Reading about the travails of a veteran who has been medically discharged from the military and is in the situation of jobless, homeless, no prospects and a disinterested family who won’t come to his rescue is very distressing. After sacrificing mental and physical health for their country, you’d expect more gratitude from the country that took so much from them. I was especially horrified by the stigma attached to having PTSD, as it he were a harmful crazy. His ex-wife, his mother, his stepfather and his stepbrother all railed against him instead of for him. Makes you ashamed at human kind!
“I’ve failed at everything I’ve tried since I got back. I can’t get a job no matter how hard I look, and as of Wednesday, I’ll be officially homeless.”
Until an angel in the guise of rockstar Quinn Wylder appears in his life. They met previously when she toured an American military base in Germany and they had an insta-attraction and a cute little moment with spaghetti ice cream.
Tanner was full of shadows and panic, and Quinn was full of sunlight and concern. They were ideal for each other. Due to his training and knowledge, she hired him to protect her from a stalker and in so doing, she brought light to his darkness in a way that was pure joy to read. I read about how his chest would start pressing in a panic attack and her intervention would make his chest lighten up and fill with caring for this young woman.
“I tighten my arms around her as well, closing my eyes against the sudden rush of warmth. I’ve never felt anything like it. It’s like sunshine in my blood, bursting from the inside out.”
There were parts full of despair and anguish, near to making me cry, and then fun parts where Quinn just makes everything light and fun. I loved how they exchanged army ranks, how he started calling her Private Wylder and rose her in ranks in a manner similar to how she came more and more loved by him. And how to forget when she joked that his woobie was actually his “blankie”!
I hated Tanner’s family and how clueless and unfeeling they were about Tanner’s situation. I was so upset at some parts where Tanner’s desperation comes through, and I felt so sad that a man who so proudly served is now homeless and hopeless.
Quinn’s band partners were fun for the most part, except for envious Emily. I totally loved Colton! He was the crazy cute guy in this story! I loved the funny parts of the story because they were so cute.
Reading this book was an emotional experience for me, and an eye opener too. These two authors combined their expertise and produced an awesome book that brought us a great story on the rock band part and all the anguish and suffering of veterans. I loved Tanner’s journey from homeless and jobless to having a respectable job doing what he knows best and eventually falling for the woman he’s protecting. And I loved Quinn’s caring and concern and how she brought light to Tanner’s darkness and brought to light the hero he truly is. In spite of all the angst I felt along the story, it had all the cheesiest, happiest ending I would have ever wanted!
Guarding Shadows by Aly Stiles and Hazel James is a contemporary rockstar and military romance told in first person dual POV. Although it's book five in Aly Stiles's Save Me series, it can be read as a standalone. So far, it's the only book I've read in the series, and I didn't feel like I was missing anything or in need of any additional information to understand and enjoy the story.
Army vet Tanner Clarke has recently been medically retired from the military and is having a hard time adjusting to civilian life. He has an unsupportive family and needs a job and a place to live. When Tanner’s offered the opportunity to go on tour as the bodyguard for the band Detour Wylde, it feels like the answer to all his problems, and he jumps at the chance. It doesn’t hurt that his primary duty will be protecting the beautiful internet star who toured the army base a few months ago.
Rocker Quinn Wylder became famous because of a viral video. She’s new to the music industry, so when she receives creepy messages from an unknown source, she’s not sure how to handle it. She’s scared, but unsure if she’s overreacting or if the texts are evidence of a real threat. When Quinn spots Staff Sargeant Tanner Clarke in the audience of one of her shows, she’s just as drawn to him as she felt when she visited his army base. She thinks his military background and training make Tanner the best person to protect her from a stalker, so she and the band offer him the job.
Who is sending Quinn messages? Is she really in danger? What will happen as Tanner and Quinn spend time together? And what will happen when the tour ends? Read the book to find out.
I loved Tanner and Quinn’s story! As characters they were both well-developed, fully fleshed-out, and flawed while still being relatable and likeable. The story deals with some sensitive issues in a realistic and respectful way. My heart broke for Tanner as he struggled to find his place in the civilian world while dealing with PTSD. I loved how Quinn was a grounding presence for him, helping him do his therapy homework and face his experiences through sharing them with her. And I loved how protective Tanner was of Quinn - not because it was his job, but because of how much he cared for her. They had great chemistry together too. Guarding Shadows is a beautifully written, emotional story about pain, grief, hope, healing, and most of all, love. Highly recommended!
An emotional journey that took my breath away. Gut-wrenching, gripping, inspiring and so beautifully written story with amazing in depth characters. This book is so special and unique, exploring the deepest scars of the main characters, showing a range of emotions that made me feel so much.
Quinn Wylder was living the dream until she needed protection when someone seemed to be too invested in her. A shining soul, raising star who didn’t have any viciousness on her soul in spite of this profession where she could be eaten alive if she wasn’t careful. Living her but afraid to dream big. A sweet, fierce and kind woman who could totally bring the light into Tanner’s darkness, to fight for him when no one else would.
Tanner Clarke is a wounded and tortured soldier who was caught into a downward spiral, abandoned by the country he served and his family… it was worse. Everyday he was sinking deeper into the darkness, a vicious circle when he had no one to fight for him back. His background story moved me tons and got me. Be ready to feel it into your soul. That man won me over with his broken soul, selflessness and compassion.
Quinn and Tanner stole my heart. I was hooked from the beginning. The authors created a magnificent story, raw and painful, when the broken hero’s life which had imploded but slowly brought back all the pieces together, dealing with some tough issues, telling the story straight, without holding anything back. Their chemistry was off the charts and I felt the magic happening. Damn my heart…
It might not be an easy journey but the authors managed to convey emotions to another level. I have so much love for this story, just all the freaking feels. What an experience!
Guarding Shadows is a unique 5* read that has beautifully woven a rockstar romance with a gut-wrenching story of life after servicing your country. It is the first story that I truly felt the pain and frustrations that Tanner was going through, but this only enhanced what is a truly wonderful book. The light-hearted moments are given to us courtesy of Colton love this guy.
'How can a person you met once punch you in the heart so hard?'
When Quinn Wylder and her new band Detour Wlyde put on a show in a German military base where her dad was stationed many years ago, she wasn't expecting to meet, and have an instant attraction to Staff Sergeant Tanner Clarke or be drawn to the unmistakable sadness that lies behind his eyes. Tanner is about to be medically discharged from the Army but one of his last jobs is to be Quinn's tour guide, he too is instantly drawn to this woman with a smile as big as a summer's day. The two-part at the end of the day never expecting to see each other again.
But when Tanner returns to the states, live outside the military is nothing like he expected, his family wants nothing to do with him, getting a job is difficult and his nightmares remain. Another chance meeting at Quinn's concert in the states and a newly acquired stalker for Quinn leads Tanner to become her bodyguard while on tour. The attraction is as strong as ever, but so are Tanner's demons and nightmares. Can Quinn persuade Tanner to let her in and be his steady rock in the storm? and can Tanner be the shoulder Quinn needs while she deals with issues of her own?.
I have to admit that author collaborations sometimes make me a little nervous, especially when I'm familiar with one author but not the other. It makes it even worse when the book is part of a series. So, going into Guarding Shadows, I was a bit anxious that this book wouldn't live up to the rest of the series. My fears were completely unwarranted though as the author duo of Aly Stiles and Hazel James have worked together to give us another great installment in the Save Me world.
In this story, Quinn is an up and coming rock star who begins receiving threats while Tanner is an Army Veteran who is struggling to find his place in the civilian world. Quinn needs Tanner's protection and Tanner needs a purpose, so it's a win-win for both of them, but it ends up being their hearts that may need protecting.
This stand alone romance is well written with a bit of humor thrown in among some emotional moments. There are a few flash backs into Tanner's military service and I loved the way that those excerpts were presented. Tanner's story brings light to many struggles facing our military veterans and those with PTSD/mental issues, but those issues are presented in such a way that they are really emphasized without becoming the center of the story.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and hope that there may be a little more life left in this series. I also wouldn't mind seeing these two authors come together again.
You know you are reading a very special story very soon into a book and Guarding Shadows is one of those reads, it’s a beautifully written, emotional love story that will stay with me long after I read the final words. I love Aly Stiles and Hazel James stories when they write separately but together they took this book to a whole another level. I honestly have no idea who wrote what and that’s a sure sign of a wonderful, powerful writing duo. Quinn Wylder has reached rock star status and that means dealing with the crazy world of stardom. Tanner Clarke is hired to protect her from the crazy fans but he has his own demons because he was medically retired from service after an injury that has also left him suffering from PTSD. This love story touched me on so many levels, it’s emotional, it’s raw, it’s captivating with a couple you will fall in love with pretty early into their journey. Tanner and Quinn are a couple that struggle as individuals but together they become strong as they bring out the best in each other, their journey is about facing your fears, learning to trust, looking deep inside yourself and realising you are far better than you thought you were. Guarding Shadows had me looking at myself as I fell hook, line and sinker for this couple, it had me asking do I really believe in me and it had me realising I can achieve what ever I want. I loved everything about this book and I urge you to one click this wonderful read.
I sorta held my breath on this. I am a huge rockstar romance junkie and Aly Stiles fan. Having not read anything from Hazel, I wasn't sure what to expect in this outcome. I also come from a heavily military immersed family. Several siblings, uncles, aunts and grandfathers all in many branches. PTSD, lifestyle, before, during and after are all no new walk for me.
I was pleased to find out that this novel was definitely taken from many aspects of truth in the life of a vet. I could feel so many of Tanner's emotions, hesitancy, anxiety and anticipation. I hurt on a personal level when he was hurting because I know real truths behind the words written for his character.
Quinn was the strong and well balanced heroine I was looking for in this novel. The fact that she was the rocker focal point made this book ace for me. Many novels about female rockers tend to come out the other side lacking. Maybe they put themselves out too much, maybe they were too over the top, maybe they weren't enough? Regardless, I've not found many female rockers I could appreciate and Quinn was among the few I actually do!
This novel will not only give you feels, it will give you REAL feels. It will send you in a tailspin, leaving you dizzy and bring you back down into a warm embrace. I loved it all!!
Wow - this writer duo made sure the Save Me series didn't skip a beat. I expected it from Aly Stiles, it's her series after all, but it was positively seamless with Hazel James who I will be checking out her other books for sure.
Tanner and Quinn are imperfectly perfect together. Tanner - wow - what a story and such a testament to how far we still have to go to treat our veterans fairly. Quinn - her heart is in the right place, she just needs to have the confidence to go for it. The way these two met and then fate brings them back together - thank goodness! I just adored their story and watching/reading them fall in love!! Sigh!
"You're safe. And loved and so very cared for." Oh my heart! "You didn't just help me face my shadows, you helped me find the light..." Tears!
There are so many facets to this story. The connections from Afghanistan, the band that is its own dysfunctional family, Tanner's most definitely dysfunctional family and watching him fight through the shadows while Quinn is pulling him into the light.
Gah! This story was just so wonderful. It was inspiring, heartful, and tragic all wrapped into page after page. Thank you Aly and Hazel for such a beautiful story and we are all better for knowing Tanner and what he represents. Great job!
I voluntarily requested and read an advance reader copy.
I love where this story took me. Aly has always had a way of showing the depth of emotion and struggles a person may have and this is apparent here. Tanner is protective and strong and honorable but is fighting demons only he knows. The story highlights how veterans are not supported once they leave service and suddenly have to deal with situations which are alien and unexpected.
Quinn is like a little ray of sunshine and although everyone loves her, there is an undercurrent of tension that needs to be addressed within her own band whilst she is already dealing with the trauma of a threatening stalker.
I really enjoyed watching these two together, they definitely brought out the best in one another and provided strength to the other when needed.
Hazel and Aly's writing blends perfectly to give a powerful story of trauma, recovery and the support that isn't offered but should be, a number of issues are covered including PTSD and the different treatments on offer I felt they were all dealt with sensitively, offering a message without it becoming overpowering. I liked the way they highlighted how people have very different perceptions of the same event.
I’m so excited that my favorite BFF authors FINALLY wrote a book together! I just knew that Aly & Hazel were going to create a beautifully crafted breathtaking, heartbreaking journey. Combining Hazel’s military experiences & writing style with Aly’s rocker romance series is every bit of the emotional rollercoaster I was expecting.
While Quinn is the light & hope of Guarding Shadows, Tanner is the heart! His tragic story is laid out in a way that was so easy to understand and relate to that it makes me wonder how & why we as a country don’t give our veterans more available resources. Why have we not protected them the way they have protected us??? This may be a fictional romance novel, but stories like Tanner’s should be required reading AND taught in our schools.
I love heroines like Quinn... strong, determined, persistent, so full of love and patience! She was every bit the perfect match for Tanner! And Tanner, oh my sweet Tanner, is the best kind of hero... protective at all cost, humble, vulnerable, sweet, and sexy af! ALL THE STARS for my new favorite writing duo!
It is hard to find words to adequately describe how much I loved, and was affected by, this wonderful book. It is thoughtful, needed, compassionate, filled with love and the awful reality of the aftereffects of war. Aly and Hazel have written a book which is both haunting and affirming. It has lyrics which call out for the music to launch them into aural life. It has definitely carved a place in my heart and left me loving both Tanner and Quinn for their huge, tender hearts. Tanner's struggles are described with honesty, and further underlines just how inadequately we care for those who have, quite literally put their mental and physical well being, on the line. This is just one of my favourite quotes from the book, and there are many: "..you sat in the darkness with me. I'd rather sit with you in your darkness than be alone in the light. ......You could never be alone in the light.... because you are the light." Beautiful. This is a book I will recommend to everyone. It is full of heart, real life, and hope. 💖💖💖💖💖
