The year is 1929, and the Crowford Grand stands in ruins. Once a successful luxury hotel, now the Grand is a dark, empty shell. But are its rooms entirely empty?
As a terrible snowstorm hits Crowford, one man decides to take refuge in the hotel. At first Thomas Skellen assumes that he's alone, but he quickly starts to notice signs that he's got company. He soon runs into Virginia, a strange girl who claims to have been hiding away in the hotel for almost a year. If Virginia is to be believed, the hotel is home to several ghosts, and the living are cursed to remain forever.
Determined to prove Virginia wrong, Thomas tries to leave, only to discover that her claims are true. The ghosts of the Crowford Grand have their own plans, and death awaits anyone who tries to escape. Meanwhile, two police officers are also making their way to the hotel, pushing through the blizzard in a desperate attempt to track down a murderous fugitive.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
Another good story from the haunting town of Crowford. This series just keeps getting better and better. A faded hotel where the guests cannot leave and the staff pursue their own agenda, in a never ending time loop. Deliciously spooky!
My enjoyment of the book was spoilt slightly by my confusion of which date line I was in. It could be my age or the fact that when I'm reading in bed, I often 'drop off' and as a result, the Kindle falls from my hands and moves on at least ten pages. I wake up because the dog has got fed up with my Kindle resting on his back, and has moved, so it flops on the bed, adding yet another ten pages. I am convinced that some of the ghosts from Crowford Grand have jumped from the book into my mind. and jumbled up the ghosts from the non ghosts, back to being ghosts again. All said and done, it was a good book and I can give it 5 stars because I believe it was my own actions that confused me not anything to do with Amy.
For the next few minutes the flat stood in absolute silence, save for the sound of cars passing on the street below. Someone shouted in the distance, and eventually a bump rang out from the flat above, but otherwise the empty space of flat 408 remained completely undisturbed. Finally, however, a faint shadow fell against the wall in one of the corners, a shadow that couldn't possibly have been cast by anything in the room. The shadow persisted, shifting slightly as if some hidden presence was slowly starting to break through. As the shadow began to fade, the silence of the flat seemed somehow to swell with expectation, as if the room was holding its breath.
If the 8 books in the Crowford series, this was my favorite. The author didn't provide a detailed past of the two main characters, Thomas and Virginia, but that wasn't necessary for this story full of ghosts, mysteries, and even a hint of romance. I am sad this is the last of the series.I will miss Crowfor d.
A relatively average ghost story, but still pretty enjoyable. A person who was hung up on running the hotel comes back as a ghost and tries to stop everyone who enters from leaving. And lots of people enter during this novel, most of them fighting among each other and with the ghost. Entertaining stuff.
I finally am caught up on the series and I haven't grown tired of it yet. I'm glad that the outcome of the story was different than what I thought it would be, about half way though the book.
Good read. This series seems to finally be picking up. Love the vibe of you can't leave once you enter the grand. Ghosts were fun. They all had good back stories.
