Dickens's creative genius has been praised by fellow writers—from Leo Tolstoy to George Orwell and G. K. Chesterton—for its realism, comedy, prose style, unique characterisations, and social criticism. On the other hand, Oscar Wilde, Henry James, and Virginia Woolf complained of a lack of psychological depth, loose writing, and a vein of saccharine sentimentalism. The term Dickensian is used to describe something that is reminiscent of Dickens and his writings, such as poor social conditions or comically repulsive characters.
On 8 June 1870, Dickens suffered another stroke at his home after a full day's work on Edwin Drood. He never regained consciousness, and the next day he died at Gad's Hill Place. Contrary to his wish to be buried at Rochester Cathedral "in an inexpensive, unostentatious, and strictly private manner," he was laid to rest in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey. A printed epitaph circulated at the time of the funeral reads: "To the Memory of Charles Dickens (England's most popular author) who died at his residence, Higham, near Rochester, Kent, 9 June 1870, aged 58 years. He was a sympathiser with the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England's greatest writers is lost to the world." His last words were: "On the ground", in response to his sister-in-law Georgina's request that he lie down.

O carte atât de frumoasă și care conține învățăminte prețioase. Eroul central al romanului este Pip (Philip Gargery) în căutarea afirmării de sine și în împlinirea năzuințelor sale. Fiind un copil orfan, în îngrijirea surorii sale, rele și zgârcite, Pip speră ca într-o zi să poată scăpa din acest mediu și să-și facă o viață strălucită.
Unica consolare pe care Pip o găsește, este soțul surorii, un bărbat cu o inimă mare și cu un caracter de admirat. Mi-aș fi dorit să-l găsesc pe Joe în toate etapele de viață ale lui Pip, atât de simpatic mi s-a părut acest personaj. Și mare mi-a fost bucuria când spre final Joe revine iarăși în context. Soarta lui Pip ia o întorsătură la 90 de grade atunci când acesta ajută un deținut. Cum s-au desfășurat și poate și împlinit pe-alocuri marile speranțe ale lui Pip, vă las să descoperiți citind cartea.
Cert este că veți fi cuceriți de fluiditatea scrierii, de stilul poveste al istoriei și de personajele absolut fabuloase. Veți descoperi printre altele felul în care oamenii își schimbă atitudinea față de cineva în conformitate cu grosimea portmoneului celui din urmă.
“E greu de ştiut cât de departe merge dorinţa unui om de treabă, cinstit şi cu simţul datoriei; dar e uşor de ştiut cât de mult te-a determinat pe tine omul din apropierea ta şi, ştiu prea bine, că puţinele lucruri bune, care s-au prins de mine în timpul uceniciei, mi-au venit de la inima cinstită şi mulţumită a lui Joe şi nu de la fiinţa mea frământată de năzuinţe.”

Partea a doua mult mai antrenanta decat prima. Mult mai putine parti plictisitoare si mult mai multa intriga. Finalul un pic neasteptat prin nedezvaluirea adevarului total.

Dacă primul volum aveam impresia că nu se mai termina și îi tot dădea într-una cu plictiseala, al doilea volum a remediat situația și a înclinat balanta în sensul bun 😀
Tot ce este interesat și mișto se întâmplă în acest volum, ba chiar și stilul taraganat de povestit se schimba intr-un stil alert și captivat.
Dacă reușești sa teci cu brio de prima parte, partea a doua merită toată atenția 😀

The story of a boy name Pip and his journey to become a gentleman with the help of his “great expectations”.
Classics used to write in a very unusual way than modern writers. There is a charm in this book that i didn’t understand in the beginning. However, the story resulted in a great ending. Beautiful and mature.

Daca in prima parte mai gaseai momente in care te puteai plictisi, in partea a doua totul te tine cu sufletul la gura! Recomand cartea cu mare drag tuturor.
