Katie Woo is a sweet girl who is nervous about staying the night at her grandparents for the first time. It is okay in the day, but at night, it gets dark. The big bed is just so high, and the walls are a yucky color. This is the perfect book to read to your little girl before you send her off to stay the night with her grandparents for the first time. They will know that is okay to get scared, and maybe call you if needed. This is also a decent easy reader book for your little girl. The text is big, and half the page tends to be a picture of Katie Woo with her grandparents. The author tries to make some jokes, which I am sure little kids will find funny. While this is not a must-read, it is a perfect practice chapter book for little girls. I do not think little boys will want read about a little girl. Recommended as an additional purchase for readers 5-7, but as a definite purchase if you need multicultural characters.
Illustrated by Tammie Lyon. With illustrations that perfectly represent vocabulary that might be unknown, this book is an excellent easy reader. Although it was by no means exciting, I can definitely see this book being useful if a child is worrying about being away from home or as a preventative source of familiarity with the issue. I'm assuming the other Katie Woo books are similar in this way and I will definitely be recommending them in the future.
Katie spends a nervous night away from home at her grandparents house. She enjoys planting tomoatoes with her grandfather and making wontons with her grandmother but at night, the bed is too high and she wants to go home. Comforted by her mother's old teddy bear and favorite lullabies, Katie is soon content to stay and plans to return again soon. A glossary, discussion guide, and activities are included.
A fabulous early reader - Katie is nervous about spending the night at Gramma and Grandpa's but thanks to love (and cookies and songs) from the Grandparents and a quick call to Mom, she stays the night and has fun too!
This book had a clear problems and solutions. Katie was nervous to stay at her grandparents house, but eventually decided that was going to be okay because of how much fun she was having. It shows that even if you are scared, look on the bright side and look for ways to not be scared. Only 3 chapters, easy read for students in the beginning stages of chapter books.
