The yacht party is in full bloom. Everyone is imbibing and a good time is being had by all. Debbie seems to be enjoying it the most. She's laughing at the jokes the other guys are telling her .. as her husband stands off a ways with a scowl on his face.
Shortly after, he reminds her they are moving their boat early in the morning and it's time for them to leave. But Debbie doesn't want to leave. Her husband grabs the back of her shirt and literally drags her out.
DI Robbie Chilcott is charged with looking into a missing person's case. A woman has been missing for several weeks and the man making the report is worried. However, her husband has not reported it. When Chilcott investigates the husband says his wife is visiting her sister. However, Chilcott soon learns he's lying.
It's' no surprise to the neighbors at the marina .. they all report the man's behavior at their party ... his wife, Debbie, is the missing woman. And most of the neighbors wouldn't be surprise to learn that the husband has killed her.
But where is her body?
Written by an ex-CID detective, I expected a certain amount of credibility .... and I was not disappointed. This is a well-crafted story filled with twists and turns that could rival a roller coaster ride. The characters are solidly drawn. Chilcott, especially, is not likeable to start but he grew on me. He's a little arrogant, a little bossy, but he's sincere in the job he does and he's like a dog with a bone and just won't let go until he solves whatever puzzle he's working on. The ending came quite as a surprise ... never saw it coming. Although 2nd in the series, this can easily be read as a stand alone, however, I do recommend reading them in order.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this psychological tale / British crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Fantastic novel by this author. He is already becoming one of my go to authors in my top 10! I guessed the scenario midway through the book, but I didn't know for sure if I was right until the end! Now I have to wait for the 3rd installment of this series! This plot was a great one, not one I had ever read before in either British nor American based novels. I finished it in one sitting, right after I finished Tue first book in the series. That has to tell you something!
Another great, intriguing book from James. An interesting, original and thrilling read. The characters are well-written and likeable. I found myself repeatedly rooting for DI Chilcott. It is a gripping novel and I couldn't read the pages quick enough. Highly anticipating the third novel in the DI Chilcott series, hopefully it will be released soon
Another smash hit for author James D Mortain. A brilliant twist (no spoilers) that puts a new spin on the story. Fantastically thought out and expertly written. DI Chilcott's no-nonsense and sometimes unconventional approach to policing gets results in a page-turning novel that has the reader applauding, and panicking over the fate of one of crucial characters. Can't wait for Book 3.
I loved this book. A real page turner with lots of twists and turns. Chilcott is a great character, makes me laugh. Love his attitude. I couldn't outfit down. I read in one sitting. Another brilliant book James, highly recommended, well done. Just read the preview of A whisper of evil. Can't wait.
The writer's background ensured the police procedural element was in safe hands. Portishead Marina made a great setting for the story line, while the yachting crowd and the detective squad room were chock full of interesting characters. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
This is an interesting new series, DI Chilcott is a bit different and unorthodox in his approach to solving crime. The books are easy to read and the plot is engaging. Best read in order as the story builds on events in the prior book.
