Featuring: Rise of the Mage by Sarah Zolton Arthur
The Dragonshadow Princess by Margo Bond Collins and Krystal Pena, writing as K.M. McKenna
A former preschool teacher, chef, and lastly, a stay-at-home mom, Sarah Zolton Arthur has worn many hats in her life, until graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in English/Creative Writing and finally finding the hat that fits: writing romantic comedies. Above all else, she lives by these rules. Call them Sarah’s life edicts: In Sarah's world, all books have kissing and end in some form of HEA, because all romance heroes deserve love.
I'm looking for new authors to read and I think anthologies the are a great starting point for that so here we are.
1. Rise of the Mage by Sarah Zolton Arthur (2*) Pros: There are some pretty cool concepts here and the story beats are technically sound. Solid worldbuilding too. Cons: I'm not sure if this is a product of the limited length (will have to read more by the author to know that) but the emotions are pretty much non-existent in the writing even when the circumstances are highly emotionally charged. People form close relationships and get over trauma near-instantly. There are some pretty stark moments of plot convenient handwaving (I'm sorry but that is NOT how funeral pyres work and how on earth did that king find these guys what was the mind control stuff so many questions) too.
2. The Dragonshadow Princess by K M McKenna (3*) Pros: Decent writing, fair worldbuilding and hey at least the story emotions made sense here. Cons: This is very definitely a prologue more than it is a story and it shows. A lot of teasing, zero answers. I'm giving it some leeway as it's part of an anthology though.
I love anthologies and this one has some good authors. SO far I have read one of the stories. In Dawn’s Light by Tiffany Shand - This is a prequel to a new series set in the past to the Rogues series and introduces new characters in this world. While a quick read it was full of action, danger, and magic as Callie tries to get to a magic circle to cast a spell that will help her people. It made me laugh and groan at what happens as she tries to make the magic happen on a tight schedule. Just out right fun.
Review for Reign of Queens An entertaing, well written fae story. Ani is third in line to the pixie throne but pays little attention to the duties, until the kingdom is attacked, forced to flee she joins up with an outcast and heads for the City of Chaos. I enjoyed the storyline, good characters and a great descriptive style make this a read you can easily become engrossed in. The story is novella length and has a open end for further stories. Highly recommended. I received a complimentary copy from the author and am leaving a honest voluntary review
I adore fantasy, especially with magic, swords & dragons. As usual with anthologies, some good, some meh, some bad. Editorial standards vary widely too: some of these short stories - none of them are full-length novels - are full of poor grammar, typos & poorly expressed, repetitive narrative, while some are quite polished. Some stories are very brief; some seem unfortunately endless. I wanted to like this more than I did.
I love a good boxset and this fantasy boxset looks to be a good one with stories written by some fantastic authors. My review is for Reign of Queens by Kelly N. Jane. It’s an exciting and entertaining novella that draws you in from the very start. It’s a great adventure with an engrossing storyline with fantastic characters and I look forward to reading more!
I really enjoyed reading these stories, especially the ones with the themes of Camelot developed in a very different way from the traditional. Each story offered a different focus, and the information about the author after each story was helpful in seeing what other works could be found.
So far I've only read Reign of Queens and I loved it! Definitely not what I was expecting out of a tale about pixies, and I really hope the author continues with the story. I have so many questions about Ani's mother and Boz that couldn't be answered in this short story.
Epic collection of fantasy novels! Each of these deserves to stand alone but luckily for the reader they have been combined into an unparalleled set. Find awesome new authors, reconnect with others you already love and enjoy numerous hours of reading pleasure for a very low price.
Amazing magical stories that definitely has you hooked from the start. Love the characters and how you feel a part of them. Reign of Queens was one that really stood out.
