I have a 2 year old black Labrador gundog and purchased this book as I'm working my way through the various levels of ability with an accredited trainer. It's a brilliant book and in my opinion, persons at all ability levels can benefit from it. I'm currently working towards Intermediate Level and found it extremely useful in understanding my/our strengths and improvement areas.

I would say though, that for me the book alone is not enough. Sure, it tells me how to train and develop my dog, but that's in an academic sense, if you will. I then marry this theory up with practical guidance from my trainer, one lesson every two weeks. Plus, I work very deliberately on the homework that he sets in between lessons.

I like Rez's writing style because she doesn't pull any punches; she very realistic about what we take on when we buy a gundog and aim to make them a pet. On that note, and it's just a personal opinion, that for the vast majority of us, the pet gundog is a mirage, something that I'm always striving to achieve but can never really fully get there. Don't get me wrong, I can I'm sure, get to a level that I'm happy with, but the vast majority of high class gundogs don't share a home with humans and they don't have granddaughters fooling around with them, sending them crazy and breaking all the rules! I mean that in a kind way.

I changed trainers to follow the Lez Graham programme and it has made the world of difference to me/us. And one final point, exactly as described in the book, I come away from so many lessons reminding myself that I need to throw fewer dummies and practice, practice, practice the basics.
