Needles, a retired Special Forces medic and owner of Dawes’s Salvage has a problem. Her name is Delaney. She’s a thirteen years old. She’s foul-mouthed, disrespectful, and hates authority. As far as Needles is concerned, those are her good points, because she’s also his manipulative ex-wife’s daughter, and he’s been extorted to go find her. An awful lot of people really want Delaney dead. They just didn’t figure on Needles getting in the way.
A truly enjoyable reading experience - again! Hopefully you and The Missus are thinking about doing the same with The Shack stories. I am always wondering how many others who have stories are actually epublishing. I know several because I have bought there ebooks as well. Many other writers have new stories and some they have pulled like you and The Missus. If you need more encouragement to keep ePub add me to the list (KenfromIndy). A sincere thank you for the many hours of reading and re-reading. I can’t give a writer(s) a higher compliment then reread there work!!
An ex-special forces agent who would do anything to save his daughter. And she didn't even start out that way. This is an action packed story about two people who appear dysfunctional to the outside world but are totally in sync with each other. There is non-stop action. This is truth over dishonesty. There is good over evil. The author really knows how to connect the reader to the story he tells.
There is action that is fast, deadly and decisive. There’s the subtle humor that will make you smile. There’s the dedication that comes from making the family you love.
Read this story - then read it again, several times.
Needles & Delaney are chaos magnets. The mayhem comes to them while they're just living their lives, but they roll with it and come out on top. Todd took his original short stories and re-worked them into a cohesive, well-told, and gripping story. You'll be happy that you read this - it's a ripper of a story!
I originally read (and re-read) this at Todd's on-line story site. Wounded people create a loving family while dealing with life and death problems. The story is frequently laugh-out-loud hilarious, sometimes profound, and is an excellent thriller. I am hoping for more Needles and Delaney books in the future.
This story was a solid read from beginning to end. The interaction of the characters was heartwarming to hilarious at times. The action sequence kept me on the edge of my seat. The forwards and afterwards were worth the read by themselves. Can't wait for more from Todd and The Missus, they make a great team!
My brother made me read this book and, like always, he was right. It was FANTASTIC! It's action packed and also hilarious. I even got a kick out of one of the side characters having the same last name as my maiden name. I will definitely be following this authors and reading more of their books! I give it 👍👍 and 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟!
I may not know good, decent writing if it had teeth and bit me in the nads but I know what I like. And the banter between these two I like. And as Miss Delaney Dawes would say, "It's hard to say I'm sorry, particularly when I'm not... F**k them if they can't take a joke!!!"
Likeable characters who actually work for a living with normal concerns about life. Hope they have many more adventures and we learn about the repo-mans bad day.
A really great read, we'll worth your time. Great characters who you know you would like in real life, besides what's not to like about a scrap guy and his daughter. Reminds me of the scrap girl Pulp Fiction.
Having had the pleasure of reading many of his stories online. I really look forward to seeing more of his stories in this format. They are always well presented with real people you can recognize. Real people with real values and character.
Delaney is a bit over the top as a character. Nevertheless, I want one! I hope the rest of The Shack stories come out 8n book form; particularly in chronologically correct order.
Absolutely amazing book. Great character development and story line. Best series of stories I’ve read (and reread) in years. I can’t wait for them to write more, or to publish the stories they’re written on other web sites.
This is SERIOUSLY good stuff, a self-published novel that it a more enjoyable and entertaining read than most novels on the NYT bestseller list.
It's about a retired Special Forces medic (Needles) who runs a scrapyard (he has a physician assistant's license, but had a problem with pain killers in the past) in rural Virgina and who ends up basically adopting the 13 year old daughter (Delaney) of his cheating ex-wife and the lawyer Delaney ran off with after he was wounded in Somalia. The girl is bright but dyslexic, has one hell of an attitude towards her real mother over the way she was treated, loves to work on cars, and idolizes Needles. Oh, yeah - for some reason someone wants to kill her. Frankly, it would provide wonderful material for a WONDERFUL movie or TV series - think of a cross between "The A-Team" and "The Dukes of Hazard," much better than most of the cookie cutter schlock Hollywood produces these days. The characters are endearing, and the story combines side-splitting comedy, a crime thriller, and a heartwarming story of an unlikely father-daughter relationship between two misfits. The story will appeal to both the thriller junkie and his Hallmark-network fan significant other.
It has a great minor character - Mookie, the dimwitted pothead with a heart of gold who works at a local taco stand and grows weed, which the sheriff ignores because he distributes most of it at the Senior Citizen's Center (hint - don't accept a brownie from Mrs. Ramirez!).
It is Kindle-only right now, AFAIK, which is a shame because it would have the appeal to sell well in paper format.
If you are a fan of military/special forces action adventures, then Needles and Delaney is absolutely a must-read! It has heart and action and some of the funniest dialog I've ever snorted over! I've read almost all the stories Todd and The Missus have written on the website he mentions and they are all spectacular! They have created a very entertaining world with their "The Shack" series populated with engaging and endearing characters and stories you should not miss.
I am hoping Todd and The Missus continue writing and publishing their works in book format so I can collect them! I also can't wait to read what happens when Delaney takes her driver license test! Pity the examiner!
This was a surprise. A friend recommended the story because I enjoy firearms and military history. The style is close with excellent characters and momentum. He spells or misspells Delaney/Delany quite a few times. I had a difficult time with the advanced abilities of the young heroine of the tale and the added plot twist involving genetically engineered pot.
I haven’t been through a tiny fraction of what Needles has seen, but I can definitely sympathize with him. The way he can relate to both Delaney and Sherrie shows that he is a good person (using a loose definition of ‘good’). The interactions between all of the characters make me feel good. I strongly recommend not just this series, but all of Todd Dorsey and the Missus.
Great cast of badass characters featuring the unlikely dynamic duo of a recovering drug addict Navy ‘doc’and a disaffected smart mouthed teen. Add in a big hearted buxom ex-stripper, a scheming, morally bankrupt ex-wife and an outlaw MC, and you have a high octane heartwarming thrilling addition to ‘The Shack’ series of stories by Todd and the Missus.
This is a fun adventure story, the author actually knows about the vehicles, firearms and tactics used in the story. Characters are well developed, with realistic back stories and world views.
Really enjoyed this book language could be backed off a bit, but it's still a fun easy read with quite a bit of comedy in the characters. Remember this is just a book, not real life.
The how he got a vehicle for example could be expanded into a short story at least all on its own. Everyone loves skittles. There is one technical mistake a submachine gun fires pistol ammo. M995 rounds are rifle rounds.
Great book..., pulled me right in and only released me at the end... Plenty of action and actually mostly believable characters... Hope Mr.Dorsey and the Missus bring back Needles and Delaney and the rest for further adventures..
I sure hope this is the first book in a long series. I have not enjoyed any book more than this one. Lots and lots of action with great dialogue. Todd Dorsey left enough hanging to base several more books on the characters. Please hurry with the next one.
Read this when it first came out in a series of shorts. Damn fine reading. Authors like this should be encouraged. Looking forward to seeing more of your seriously fine tales.
