This time around Jake finds himself in an unusual situation when two past clients return. After receiving a call from the Innocent Inmate Program Jake worries he may have sent an innocent man to prison twenty-one years ago. When he learns he is not being targeted for any wrongdoing Jake decides to join the Innocent Inmate Program team in a challenging legal battle to free his former client. He soon realizes that re-investigating a crime that happened nearly a quarter of a century earlier is even more difficult than it sounds. Then there is Penny, a client Jake represented four year earlier on a minor drug charge. Then Penny was an innocent kid, a runaway from an affluent family. But this time around Penny is a full-blown addict facing a felony drug charge that could put her behind bars for thirty or more years. Remembering the Penny he knew when he first met her, Jake wants desperately to save her. When Penny reveals she has evidence that could result in a dismissal of the charges Jake questions if that is in her best interest. Faced with an ethical dilemma Jake follows his conscience and finds himself on a path that could lead to personal disaster.
After graduating from Manhattan College and Fordham University School of Law, I practiced in New York for thirty-five years. Although I write about criminal law, I never practiced criminal law. My area of practice was civil litigation. In 2005 I retired and in 2010 moved with my wife Rose to South Carolina. Freed from the daily grind of an active law practice, I once again became an avid reader. That lead to my writing stories, which I did strictly for my own enjoyment and shared only with my wife. Eventually, Rose encouraged me to publish my stories, and surprisingly I’ve managed to publish a couple of books. Having been born, educated and lived in or near New York City, for sixty-five years, I know a few things about the city. As for alcoholism, I know a few things about that too. The Broken Lawyer books are not biographical, but I have drawn on some of my own experiences when writing Jake Carney’s stories.
I’ve read all 7 books in the broken lawyer series. I enjoyed the 1st book immensely, but this was is even better! If the author keeps churching them out, I will keep reading them!
Another really good read. I really warm to the main character and all the characters and plot are believable. Can't wait to read the next in the series.
