Midnight Vigilante by Leonor Bass is a textbook example of Crime Fiction. The elements of a crime boss, undercover operatives, and police procedural make this book comfy for those familiar with Crime Fiction.

My review is for the second edition of this book. I want to start with character development. I am so inspired by Riley. Her kick-ass, take no prisoners, the tough exterior was so refreshing compared to some female characters I've read in the past. I really felt like I knew Riley and identified with her character. Not every character was as developed as her but I'm okay with that. I loved Paige, all the detectives, and even the bad guy had a backstory that made his character easier to understand. I wanted to make a comment about the dialogue, Bass has an excellent sense of humor and it shows in the story. I can't count how many times I laughed out loud at the witty bits in the book. I also laughed at all those male characters, but I won't say why. No spoilers!

The plot of the book is so fast-paced and full. There is event after event happening and I couldn't wait to read more and find out what was going to happen. This fast pace made a long book feel short! Bass has a talent for describing action sequences for sure. I liked the storyline in general too. I kept thinking I knew what was going to happen but the story evolved and grew with each new event, while also keeping us in the sphere of our genre.

A lot of attention was paid to characters and dramatic events which is awesome and created some pulse-pounding events and sequences, but I can't say that I ever felt what the spaces were like and world building seemed a little underdone. To me, this is not a problem. I had just as much of a good time in the book without it. There were a few places where the city or town was described but not a huge amount of time spent there. Again, I was okay with that. I don't need a long-winded description of a setting, especially in a book like this where so many of the same spaces are used by the characters again and again.

I'm not entirely sure what the theme of this book is but if I had to make one up I would say the theme is to always look out for yourself. Riley was the master of this and although she was a hard nut to crack, her success came from relying on herself and not waiting for anyone to save her from her troubles. She was a go-getter, a self-starter, and a super badass.

Overall I would recommend this book to anyone whose never read crime fiction before. It is a perfect introduction to the genre for someone who may have never read it.

This was a Crime Thriller to me. It was a breath of fresh air to read this genre as I don’t read enough of it.

I loved the story and the character of Riley as she was shown as an independent woman taking care of things herself. She wasn’t shown at needy girl. I liked the fact she had a twin sister as I myself am I twin.

I felt like it could have picked up more at the beginning of the book however, once it got going it was a nice pace that kept throughout.

I loved when I got to the part where the title made sense!!!

I liked how it showed the hate of the the women being portrayed as objects to the men and giving women the power for once !

Now endings make more break it for me as a reviewer. This story had a nice ending but I wish it would have had a bigger twist or maybe a cliffhanger.

Overall, I would recommend reading this novel if your like crime books and I would have rated higher if the ending would have shocked me more.

Final rating 3.5/4 Stars. :)
Disclaimer: I was sent this book in exchange for an honest review! :)
Crime thrillers are not my preferred genre but I did enjoy this. :)
Some very slight pacing inconsistencies, mainly being a bit slow to start but it picks up and the pacing levels out. There are a few small plot holes such as the reference to character relations and description.
Beware of Mature language if that’s something that bothers you, but it is adult so that is to be expected.
If you’re looking for a Strong female lead with morally grey attributes, this is the book for you. Personally morally grey characters are one of my favorites.
Overall I would recommend especially if crime thrillers is a genre you typically go for. It’s a light easy read and was enjoyable :)

Read the review here on my blog: https://brionymolly.com/2020/08/02/bo...

I received a copy of this book for an honest review:
The Thriller genre is usually characterized and defined by the emotions they elicit, giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation, and anxiety. Usually, thriller books are dark and brooding, plunging the reader to a world that can be relatable, but at the end of the day, forged in stories that leave the hair on your arms raised, heart racing and head reeling. Thrillers are characterized by the three C’s when it comes to literature, the contract, the clock, and the crucible. The first “c” contract is set out in the first few pages, what the book promises the reader. Will the protagonist get revenge? The theme is then carried forth in a time restraint, which brings us to the second “c”, the clock. And lastly, the thriller is not going to be easy for our characters. They have the last “c” the crucible to deal with. They are constrained to adhere to certain rules, meet challenges head-on that offer them no escape from their contracted destiny. Of course, while this all plays out they can be twists and turns that make rollercoasters look like child’s play.

So where does Midnight Vigilante fit into the genre?

The Review
When it comes to approaching a thriller novel, I normally handle myself in a cautious fashion. The kettle is put on, the glasses come out and the cozy reading chair is primed. I usually put aside 20-30 minutes at a time to read, in order to savor the book and make the most out of it; however, with Midnight Vigilante it was very hard to put down. I found it unclear at first what was happening and the intent of the book, but things started to make more sense, the further I got into it.

Riley is a strong independent character, chased by personal demons, trauma, and her past. She returns to the town she swore she would go back to, LinHill, to her half-sister, who seems outwardly aggressive to Riley, but internally caring. From the offset, there is a lot of action and emotion, Riley being very aggressive and protective of herself which can be seen as a strong independent character but also on the edge of being chaotic. However, due to the action and constant questions that keep arising needing answering, I couldn’t put the book down. The slow introduction of the dark crime-ridden side of LinHill couples nicely with Riley’s past, but also hinders her personal growth and character development.

As far as the characters go, they are somewhat complex and unique but could use some refining. (personal preference). I like how Riley is strong and independent, but also vulnerable. This vulnerability is used well in the story and is a fresh character trait for a protagonist in a thriller to have. Detective Castello also became a likable character, however, I am not convinced with the relationship he has with Riley.

The book kicks ass when it comes to action. It has straight to the point, energetic and well-written action sequences that are very enjoyable. This part is executed so well, it got my heart racing and anxiety screaming internally, and in this case, it is a good thing. Another Eureka moment I had in the book, was when the title started to make sense, as leading up to the event I was pretty confused at why the book was titled as such. Very clever, liked that bit a lot, and I don’t want to give too much away!

Overall I would like to give this book 4/5 stars.

It’s fast-paced, action packed and a true crime thriller!

Midnight Vigilante, by Leonor Bass, follows Riley Spencer’s homecoming after a passionate, dramatic, and crime-riddled stage in her life. She moves in with her estranged sister, and tries to establish a new, peaceful existence in her small hometown. She never expected that the town is now under the grip of crime-lord, and that her sister is intimately involved with him. Riley’s new self-confidence soon runs her afoul of the ruling class, and her sister’s untimely demise leads Riley into a vengeance-filled rollercoaster ride of action, betrayal, and emotions.
While the characters are engaging and believable, many of their story arcs disappoint. Riley only shows her emotional vulnerability near the end, and supporting characters often show no arc at all. Appropriately, the two most interesting characters in the book are the main character and the antagonist. The crime-lord takes a surprising and tantalizing downward arc, and Riley’s memories of her old life make for better reading than the current events, and result in a wish for a prequel to Midnight Vigilante. The inevitable confrontation is the biggest disappointment, with completely uncharacteristic actions from her enemy, and a sudden, anticlimactic conclusion.
Riley’s physical vulnerability is often a cause for concern, which is a delightful change of pace from other crime novels, where close combat with the protagonist carries implied guarantees of defeat for the bad guys. Twists and turns in Riley’s story are often subtle and understated but, along with compelling dialogue and hints of mysterious pasts, combine for a fun reading experience. If you’re looking for light reading, with minor plot holes, and questionable character actions, read Midnight Vigilante.

This book has a lot going for it, but some flaws in execution keep it from earning those last couple stars.

What made it enjoyable:
1. Compelling characters and complex, layered relationships
2. A solid premise with pleasantly unexpected plot twists

What distracted me from my enjoyment:
1. The whole thing could have used a couple more passes with editors/proofreaders. There are a lot of typos and misused words; character details that change partway through the story (e.g. two characters are first described as being half-sisters with two different mothers, and then later are described as being twin sisters - my guess is that it was a second or third draft change that was not consistently revised throughout); and an overall sense that real-world details (e.g. how detectives gather evidence and interview witnesses) weren't thoroughly researched, which made the story feel less tight and lean too heavily on the willing suspension of disbelief.
2. I'm uncomfortable with the book's moral conclusion.
3. There is quite a bit of foul language used. A word here or there doesn't bother me, especially if the context calls for it, but it felt excessive to me. That's purely a matter of taste, of course.

Thank you to the author for my copy of the ebook.
Midnight Vigilante is an action-driven thriller, set in the small town, with the main character, Riley Spencer taking justice into her own hands. Upon the return to her hometown, after years of being away, she needs to deal both with her past and the complicated present. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the small-town present in the book, where everyone is into each other’s business, and where people are connected by blood despite standing on two different sides of the law. While Midnight Vigilante hasn’t turned out to be a completely my kind of book, with a greater focus on action than I have initially assumed, it may interest those who are fun of many fast-paced action movies. There have been a few instances when I wished that the characters were a bit more developed so that their actions seem more realistic, but on the overall, congrats to Leonor for another book.

Think Pulp Fiction, True Crimes, Spanish Soap Operas. This crime story plays it big. When Riley returns to her hometown, she finds that is under the thumb of gang lord Julias. Riley has her own secrets and after the death of her sister decided to take thing into her own hands. But she has more secrets than just one and eventually her own past catches up with her.
Fast paces, pulpy and gritty. This has rival sisters, rival brothers, gangs, shooting, revenge and violence. It’s a bit light on motivation, character building and introspective, but it big. Very big on action. Midnight Vigilante is good old fashioned escapism and none the worse for it.
Its good solid writing, and if this is your thing then you won't be dissappointed. Just don't expect to have much breath left afterwards

The cover drew me in and the first few chapters were actually pretty good. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. Between the main characters being unbelievable and the sub-characters being complete idiots combined with unrealistic fights, unrealistic recoveries, and over the top scenes, it became a chore just to reach the ending. If you've ever had a broken rib, you know it takes a long time before you're able to breathe and move about normally. Not days, but months. It was also hard to believe that the gangsters on the streets weren't packing heat, but instead they were carrying baseball bats and machetes. What country is this supposedly happening in? Pubescent boys or someone with a hero complex might get into this story. I couldn't.

GIRL POWER!

This book was recommended by a friend and I gotta say reading this was the greatest decision ever. I loved the cover, really caught my attention. I'm a sucker for crime stories, thrillers and mystery and this book is amazing if you want to read a story with a kick ass main character.
One of the things I loved about this was the fact EVERYONE thought the vigilante was a man! As if WE couldn't take matters into our own hands pfff.

I loved Riley, I loved Adrian and I even loved how evil Julius was.

Looking forward to reading more stories by this writer.

Most definitely recommend!

I like books that are filled with action and complex characters and this book has them all.

Riley Spencer has flaws, and that imperfections makes the character believable and relatable.
The story itself it's attractive, specially since it's rare to find a story with a female as a protagonist of all the action.

I completely recommend this book to anyone who likes crime, action and mystery.

What I like about this book was that it took my by surprise. The cover says it all, to be honest, but the whole story involving revenge is what fascinated me the most. We often see male characters taken that part, but in this book we see Riley Spencer doing what she considers best to find justice for her sister and all of those who were/are hurt by Julius Martinson.

Would I recommend this book? ABSOLUTELY. If you like crime stories as much as I do, then READ THIS.

I really enjoyed the story, the concept behind it being fascinating, and the characters. This truly has the potential to be a page-turner.
However, the lack of effective editing that resulted in numerous errors that took me out of the story and ruined the flow resulted in my three star rating.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes action, crime and a good female lead.

Though is NOT for teenagers or young folks due to some adult themes and also language. Still this is a good read.

When the cops can't act.

Riley's sister is killed and the cops can't or won't act. Enter the Midnight Vigilante. Leonie Bass has created the kind of superhero/vigilante that is often seen in movies. But unlike those this is one tough female out to get revenge. I love this!!!

Plenty of action

This wasn't great literature but it was well written with enough back story to make the characters interesting. The action was well done, especially if you like butt-kicking women with men as secondary characters.

Midnight Vigilante

Very good story about a young woman who has a lonely life until she meets a mob boss. When he is murdered she returns her hometown and gets an angry reception from her half sister. Things just go downhill from there. Kept me reading it every spare minute.

A really good read.

A different type of thriller that I normally read. In Midnight Vigilante, the reader knows who the vigilante is. Thoroughly entertaining read as the vigilante cleans up the crime from their neighbourhood.

I really got a "kick" out of the tough woman. Many scenes were unrealistic, but it was written well, so if you don't get caught up on the particulars, you'll love this book.

I can't put more than 3 stars to this book because...listen, I like the whole idea of a female being awesome and fighting. But there's something bothering me about the ending.

I liked Riley because she could overcome a lot of shit in her life and I liked that she moved on with her life even though there were times she was baaaaad. I don't know what she did in her past, though its slightly mentioned in the book, and then there's this relationship with detective Castello. Okay I like the guy (I like detectives, tbh) and I liked that they liked each other BUT the way the book ended?? all happy and in love and all, that's not exactly how I pictured an action/mystery/thriller book to end. Besides, is there gonna be a sequel??? is the author gonna write another book??? there were so many things, i have so many questions...
so many.

I don't wanna talk about the errors and other stuff, just this.
