This is a very helpful (and underrated) commentary on the Gospel of John. Probably my personal favorite. One of the best I've seen when it comes to handling difficult passages like John 6 (explaining why 6:45 is crucial, and too often overlooked, for understanding the balance between God's work and human will in this passage's teaching). Also great for pointing out deeper biblical connections and theological details one might easily miss in more familiar passages, like John 3 or John 15.

It's not an academic commentary in the sense of interacting with other scholarship or having extensive footnotes, but Dr. Dongell is certainly well-informed on the subject and unpacks the meaning of the text with clarity. It's easy to read and perfect for laypersons looking to deepen their understanding of John, or for busy pastors looking for a ready aid in sermon prep.
