My demons will ruin whatever is left of her halo.

BOWEN
I was living on borrowed everything: time, feelings, motives, even these stale breaths.
I was expired in every way.
No saving me.
He should have lived instead.
He deserved to squeeze every drop out of life and rub it in my face the way he always did.
I was stuck here as half of a person and Eve expected me to be whole enough to fix her.
We were too shattered to ever be put back together again.
I was her demon.

EVE
I was wasting every second of every day trying to make time move faster.
I was ready to throw away this life as the Princess of Denmark and go back home where Bowen would be waiting for me. There was no stopping me.
I had been promised to Bowen since our births.
I was determined to save myself for him and only him - my life line.
I may be bruised and broken but that only dirtied up my angel wings.
Nothing he couldn’t handle.
I would always be his angel.

Elena Monroe

Elena Monroe grew up in Florida scribbling down stories from a very young age. These stories were really just wavy lines filling the paper, but she knew each word, each emotion, each character's name, and there was no tricking her into forgetting what each line signified. Just like her unconventional way of writing as a toddler Elena is setting her own rules and just telling stories.

Much like her debut novel, The Best Years, life certainly imitated art. Transplanting from the South to the East Coast, Elena currently lives in Connecticut with her husband, reformed bad boy.

The book we have all been waiting for is finally here and it was everything and more!
.
Bowen, you will either love him or hate him and I absolutely love him! He was everything Elena promised and more. We knew his story was going to be an intense ride but I’m not sure we were as prepared as we should have been. There is so much to his character that I was blown away. Every little detail I was mesmerised and fully engaged into learning all about him from the first page and I’m in a world of hurt now with the book hangover from hell but it was well worth it.
.
It was truly a beautiful thing watching Eve and Bowen together. It was like magnets. The resistance, the attraction, the magnetism of their beings, personalities and even their souls, as they came together and gravitated towards each other was amazingly written. I have never seen a chemistry and undeniable as theirs. My mind is blown so if I don’t make sense I apologise. Both characters were outstanding. Both had amazing development and growth throughout and their end was bittersweet in the sense that your sad the ride is over but happy for both of them also.
.
This world has been amazing and being apart of each one was incredible. Even though it’s all one world each felt unique and stood apart from each other. The vivid details and imagery was like being transported and watching a live action movie or being apart of it yourself. So many layers to it that it emanates so many raw and gritty feelings. It’s original and unique and a read you will never forget.
.
Outstanding writing by Monroe. She has truly outdone herself with this one.

Where do I even begin with a book like this. This book had me gripped with anxiety in anticipation of what was to come because I knew this book was going to be up their in the emotion and the darkness.

From the moment I started this book, I could not put it down. It held my attention from the get go and for the life of me could not get over the twist and turns because I didn’t expect the book to be the way it was and I say that in the best way possible.

Both of these characters held so many demons that they needed to terms with head on. The one thing I loved about this and the author did such an amazing job at was showcasing their journey of how they come to terms and learn to deal with those demons was absolutely incredible. Theirs no getting rid of demons, they will always be there but it really goes to show by having your soul mate their with you who is also going along the ride and understands what it’s like, makes it somewhat easier.

These two needed saving and their was a point where I thought that they wouldn’t be able to save each other in a way that they could when they were younger because when you think back on it, they have faced too much but it was these two that needed each other to survive, they just needed to learn how.

I am just so utterly obsessed with Eve and Bowen as I knew they each had their very own story to tell.

Their chemistry and connection was so incredibly strong and it seemed to have grew strength to strength and they simply become the power couple of the group. Their love was truly something else compared to the other couples we have met in this series, these are two that you knew from first meeting that they were destined to be each other’s soul mate.

Don’t even get me started on the STEAM in this book. It was pure fire..

This author just keeps slaying her stories and I absolutely loved all that she did with these two characters. She captured their story so perfectly and being that this is the last book in the series she went off with a bang and left me with tears in my eyes. It left me with such a bittersweet feeling that words cannot express how I feel.

I feel like this review doesn’t give this book justice but it’s gonna have to do, it’s my raw and rough thoughts and to be honest I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hold onto the edge of your seat because your in for a ride that’s filled with emotion, steam, darkness, heartbreak and will leave you speechless.

I think my heart officially belongs to Bowen and Evie. There were such an emotional and broken pair but oh my how much I loved them.

I had a feeling this book would be one of the most heartbreaking in the four horsemen series but I honestly was stunned how much I cried. There are some triggers in this book as Eve and Bowen have gone through so much.

However, Elena still came through with the enemies to lovers excellence. Even though Eve and Bowen were childhood best friends, Bowen now resents Eva but can’t stay away from her.

Elena’s writing as I always say was pure and utter perfection. I love every single thing I’ve ever read by her and will continue to read her books. The steamy scenes in this one were also so OFF the charts that even I was blushing.

I have so many thoughts I can't even. I'm dead.

I'm sat here trying to form thoughts that do this book justice. That convey exactly how this book made me feel and I'm finding myself stumped and struggling to do it in a way that people can understand. I wanted Bowen's story from the first book. I don't know why I clung to his character hard but something in me needed to know his story. Needed to understand why he was the way he was. To say this was highly anticipated would be an understatement. It surpassed any and all expectations in every way.

WARNING.... This book is not pretty. I don't just mean that because it's a dark romance. Their story comes straight from the pits of hell spewing fire. It's brutal in a way that physically hurts and it will trigger even those fortunate enough to not have triggers. Please heed this warning for what it is and understand going in that this book doesn't have a quick fix or sweet romancing of any kind. It's filled with harsh realities and trauma of the worst kinds.

The cult vibes of it all. Elena has built this crazy world filled with dark depravity, broken and perfectly flawed characters and pure unfiltered brutality. I expected bad and got so much worse. It's the kind of story that's so all consuming it kept me completely captivated, a slave to their damage.

Bowen, oh my Bowey. He is beyond tragic. Haunted and attacked by his demons, he's not a slave to his past because his past is very much his present. He's not redeemable in a way that will make him change, that will light his darkness and smooth his every burn. Every bad, tragic and gut wrenchingly unfair thing that has marked and molded him into the monster he is is a part of him. You can't change what's already broken. Everything about Bowen sung to me like the saddest symphony there ever was. The sneak peaks of vulnerability, the slight softening to his hard cold shell.... every little dimension that made up Bowen is something so precious. To broken to be real, to hard to be loved.. to far gone to be saved. And yet he had me, hook line and sinker. His humanity came in the life force of a women who was like them all.

Eve... god I didn't know what to expect but she was just everything. Her being as a whole is unique because she is a little bit of them all. I didn't expect it. She wears death like a cloak. She hides the khaos behind a well practiced believable facade. She's arrogant and sees through people... she has answers for everything. She's broken and damaged in a ways that can't be fixed. There is so many layers to her personality and so much depth you don't initially see. She is by far my favourite heroine of Elena's. Her character holds so much strength and vulnerability. The way she fights despite the horror she faces. I can't even with her. She was his reason to breathe, the one who never gave up on him even when he pushed her beyond the limits. Her fierce determination to make Bowen know he was worth her love, that he wasn't alone in his battle made me love her more. You got to respect a character that will take the flaws and see them as someone's unique perfections. Someone worth saving.

They killed me dead. The passion, the pain... the protectiveness. The horror they shared truly is so fucking tragic my heart was hurting hard. Scar for scar broken recognises broken and sees it for exactly what it is, not what you want to see. There's no illusion with Bowen and Eve, all the ugly is there for them to pick apart and use against each other. A weapon for them to wield at their disposal. Their relationship is toxic. The past plays havoc with their present and their future in a way that breaks them. The raw brutal emotion of them being together exposing all those wounds makes their journey complex and erratic but also captivating. You can't help but look, it's like a fucking train wreck. The pain and the passion. The love and the hate.... the fear. It's all so clear to see. Nothing is hidden or sensored with them no matter where they are or the circumstances they find themselves in, they are forever an atomic bomb waiting to explode. The uncertainty of them. It's exhilarating and terrifying. The chemistry comes hand in hand with fear so it's never romantic or sweet. Everything about them is real, raw and brutally honest. It chokes you it's that suffocating. But their connection? They are tied to eachother like a lifeline. Both capable of destroying themselves and eachother.

This journey is like free falling into the pits of hell. It's hot heavy and deathly. Nothing about their journey was going to be easy but believe me when I say it's worse that you can possibly imagine. But it's them in all their unfiltered glory. Doing anything less would be a disservice to these characters and the traumas they've fought tooth and nail to survive. The plot progression is EVERYTHING ... that slow burn tension filled relationship between Bowen and Eve really built the anticipation and set my nerves alight. Amongst that was the side characters who tied the story together. Khaos and his forever meddling tendencies. Vic and his self righteousness trying to be there for his best friend. Grimm, death himself facing death and destruction. Let's just say you're in for a few reality checks and many secrets and lies being unraveled. The revelations of it all. There is so much going on in this book and so many internal battles being fought amoungt the merry band of broken boys. Elena seamlessly tied every path whilst forging the way for new ones. Answered so many question and then left us with more... teased us with future possibilities whilst giving us a glimpse of what's to come.
The characters of it all... the depth... the layers. So multidimensional. We get to see parts of them we didn't know existed and I'm not over it. Everything in this story has a purpose, has its place. Even the horrific parts.

This book is climactic as fuck, Angsty as holy hell and darker than death. I was shook, I cried like a bitch and had to pick my jaw up off the floor for more than half of the damn book. Expect the unexpected and prepare for the worst. Not only is there so much darkness is overwhelming... it's also inappropriately hilarious in times I probably shouldn't find it funny. There's something about Bowen and Eve that cracked me up more times than is probably sane to laugh at but it is what it is.. clearly my soul is black. This is imperfection with perfectly flawed broken people. It's a rollercoaster of emotions that left me in a monster book hangover I'll never recover from. The injustice of it all. I can't even.

That ending???? WOMAN hell to the fuck no. I need to know... I need answers. I'm trying to be polite and not spoil things but the cheek of it all. I'm both impressed and holy offended that you did that to me. Bahahaha. I need more.

I'm just going to end this here before I mumble more and spoil the whole damn book. If you didn't catch it with my essay above, I fucking loved this book hard. Like it's a top 10 favourite book ever kind of favourite for me. The depth.. the emotion. The way the story flows so seamlessly from one page to the next. The characters development and the delivery of their journey. Everything was perfect them.

This story. This story really gutted me. I’m feeling all the things. Make it stop.

This book was so good! I mean I’m speechless over here. I loved Bowen and Eve, they’re two very broken people but with some hope and forgiveness they were able to find love and redemption. I don’t wanna say too much because I don’t wanna give anything away but, I really wasn’t expecting this story with these two. I knew it was going to have twists and turns but this one puts you through the emotional ringer. There were parts about it that I didn’t care for but for the most part this book was great. It kept me engaged and waiting to know all the things and I still feel like I’m missing so many answers to some of my questions. This book is not for the faint of heart. It was raw, rough and at times so heartbreaking. But it's worth a read!

⭐️4 shy pending stars ⭐️

Book #4 in The Horsemen series.

This is Bowen story, it’s dark, gritty and complicated. His story wasn’t an easy journey. He’s tormented by a murky dark past that he tries to forget by drenching his sorrow in alcohol, self-loathing seems to be his way to be. I wasn’t joking when I said he drinks alcohol like a normal person drinks water, it’s the only way for him to cope, his chosen poison may have a numbing effect but it doesn’t solve his problems. He has to face his demons there is no escaping.

I won’t analyse how he never eats but drinks his heart out and yet he’s alive and survives with no health problems. I know it’s fictional but maybe the author pushed it a tad 🤫

Eve is Bowen’s childhood sweetheart who was ripped from his life without notice. She’s now back but she’s not the same lively girl everyone remembered.

Bowen and Eve needs to find the courage to face their pasts and give up all their secrets and ugly parts, that’s the only way out to get their happy ending.

No one will protect you like you can protect yourself, Eve. It’ll never be satisfying if you don’t quiet your demons yourself

The story is told in double POV with appearances from other Horseman, which I found endearing, (Vic and Jus are my forever favourites) the plot is steady with some twists towards the end, giving the story some much needed action. The writing isn’t always flawless, the passages from first person narrator to third weren’t fluid, some parts of the story didn’t fit with what was being said and I found it hard to keep my focus on the story with all the interruptions in the narrative flow.

We all know by this point what Bowen shady business is, I was expecting some reparation, some sort of explanation, I was disappointed it never came. Quite the opposite in fact

I was the only person standing between this being ugly and turning vile. I kept things ugly because I survived vile

I found quite hypocritical that Bowen was saving only girls who resembled Eve, as if the other women weren’t worth saving. What irked me further was how Eve turns a blind eye towards the situation. This kind of behaviour made it so that I couldn’t like neither Bowen nor Eve, I can’t condone human trafficking cult or not and here it was glossed over and then forgotten about it. Which is even more contradictory given they both had a traumatic pasts.

The only reasons I’m not rating this three stars is because the series isn’t over yet and I really hope the author will do something about it and redeem both characters. I refuse to believe she wants to make heroes out of people who indulge in said abomination.

The Control is the fourth and final book in The 4horsemen series. This is the story of Bowey and Evey, two childhood friends who were betrothed. Bowen is a stoic man, serious, reserved and who seems to be in absolute control of his emotions. He must marry Eve, his old childhood friend who is now an elegant girl. Very different from the Evey he knew. But it is that she shows two different personalities that are capable of breaking Bowen's control. They are both broken people, with very similar emotional traumas, but each deals with their pain in a different way.

Bowen with his iron control, his commitment to the Clave, and his devotion to the memory of his deceased brother. Eve with a seemingly superficial personality that fools almost everyone. Secrets are an important point in the story. Bowen is the one who takes the initiative. He is extremely intelligent and insightful and knows that not all is ok with Eve, although he must do his part to get her to open up to him. It is not easy and it is an emotional journey to read everything they had to live but finally they achieve their catharsis and can live a normal and happy marriage (in a cult environment). Special mention to the rest of the horsemen and their wives who were a great support for both of them and it makes me very happy to read about them and how they are dealing with the marriage life 🤭.

If you are lover of dark romance, these books are a must. The Control is a beautifully written book; Eve and Bowey are everything 💙.

The Control is the 4th book in the Horseman series, and focuses on Bowen and Eve and how these childhood best friends are now thrust together in a marriage. Eve and Bowen grew up together, until she was torn away from him at 13 because her mother remarried to a King from Denmark. When Eve does come back to town later on to marry Bowen, she encounters a man who's broken and cold, no longer the boy she's protected and loved since she was young. He keeps her at a distance, intent on saving and taking care of her, even though he has no intention of having a real marriage with her.

I really liked Bowen and had so much empathy for him because of what happened in his past, and I hated that no one could really reach out to help him. The only one who's strong enough to stand up to him is Eve, I guess, but sometimes her characterization felt off for me. She's supposed to be this strong woman, someone who's protected Bowen even when he was young. She was able to defend Bowen and defeated one of this enemies (57% of the way through the book shows how bad ass Eve is), and she never stops fighting to feel a connection with him. But then, I also see this contradiction in Eve when she can't reveal her own past to Bowen so that he could help her too. I think the pacing was off for me with this book, since we don't really find out a lot of the secrets until more than 80% of the way through the book. This is when you get a lot of information about Bowen and his family and Eve, though it came so late and there is so much information. I wish more of this was sprinkled throughout the text so that I can connect it to more of the characters.

I'm a HUGE fan of Elena Monroe so I'm always going to read any new books she releases. The Control was a book that I was waiting for of course, and she definitely gave us a long book to allow for so much to develop in the pages but there was a big issue for me that I'm not going to talk about because it's my issue. Bowen & Eve are two very broken souls who have been contracted to each other by their parents. He's got some serious demons but I felt hers more which brought me to my knees. I'm not discounting his by any means, however, some of his actions were almost too much for me. The Control has so many twists coming in hot that for every question answered is 20 more popping up, so despite the length, I was on the edge of my seat for the full day it took me to finish it. The book is impossible to put down no matter how much I got upset because that's the type of author Ms. Monroe is. I was left with one of the biggest book hangovers I'd ever had, and I'm not sure what to do with all the emotions that are out & about running amok. I don't know what else to say since I don't want to give anything away so hit those one click buttons to see for yourselves! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Elena Monroe...you have written a dark, twisted masterpiece! Bowen and Eve were everything I could have hoped for and so much more. Their darkness and trauma was unbelievably twisted and raw, but together they found hope, forgiveness and the light at the end of the tunnel.

Bowen and Eve were both undeniably broken and hollow apart, but together they were able to find a sense of safety and love. Despite all of the trauma they faced they were able to find redemption.

Even after reading all of the previous books in the series and getting small glimpses of Bowen and Eve, I could have never expected the story that Elena Monroe so beautifully wrote. There are twists and turns you’ll never see coming, painful moments and memories that will have you emotional like no tomorrow, and a light and the end of the tunnel that will fill your heart with hope and love.

This book is not to be missed!

The Control is book 4 in the 4horsemen series and centres around our broken boy Bowen.

"Being sad was my profession and I was nothing but professional"

So we knew from the previous books that his story was going to be an intense journey and that's exactly what it was. I think his character is the most complex out of all of Elena's characters yet.

Eve is unique. Strong but vulnerable and not afraid to fight for her and Bowen. She has been forced to put on a facade for too long And Bowen wants nothing more than the true Eve to show herself.

"Desirable? Pure? Innocent? Are you so sure I didn't fuck her halo crooked already?"

Nothing about this journey is easy. It's tragic, it's sad but it's theirs and it's hauntingly beautiful.

This delivers the angst, the heat, the dark, the lot. Questions are answered but more are asked and your emotions will be feeling the ride.

Enjoy!

We finally get Bowen’s story ! This book was a dark gritty twisted and painful ride the emotions it put me through the heartbreak so much heartache this is such a gripping read I couldn’t put it down. Elena’s writing is phenomenal the plot the twists and turns the character development just everything was amazing. So many secrets are unveiled in this one we get a closer look at the underground of the Clave . I’m sad that it’s over but also I’m happy and satisfied with the ending I’m happy that Bowen was able to get his HEA . This is a definite must read from this author if you haven’t started this series yet you need to ! Bittersweet ending jaw dropping revelations this book was phenomenal!

So much pain

All of the horsemen have suffered through some version of hell and Bowen was no exception! I broke for him! Eve had her own demons as well! The torment was visible in the words in this story! I hurt for each of them in different ways. Bowen’s pain was so bad i felt every ounce of it!! The last 10% of this book I think hurt me the most. When some truths about Grimm that came out that he was not not aware of, I cried for him and when Bowen gave him a note that one did me in!!! (Can’t say much on it without giving anything away)
The only thing I am not sure of was the ending. I know they have their HEA but I felt like it just ended.... I kind of wanted a wrap up for some characters especially Grimm after learning what he did.

Tbh Vic and Justice were my favourite couple. but this book changed that. Eve and Bowen stole my heart with their Sweet, beautiful but Broken Souls, Even though at some point I wanted to smack both of them to stop running in circles and Hash it out directly. Each time Eve called him Bowey my heart totally melted. There is always something awesome in reading about childhood sweethearts fighting for their Love and Elena has captured that beautifully in this book. And in the end, I never saw THAT coming.

By Shit, did I go through every freaking emotion with this book!
I feel like I've been sucker punched with so many different feels.

Bowen is one super intense guy. All's evie wants is to love him. Their story is a Dark and Twisted journey and one I won't soon forget.

I cannot give the story away but seriously the best way to found out how it goes is to read Bowen and evie's story in The Control The 4th book in the 4Horseman series.
This has to be my favourite of them all so far.

Bowen and Eve captivated me in this story. It all started with the cover because it is beautiful. Then the story just sucks me in and I couldn't stop reading. It's suspenseful, mysterious, exciting, and sexy.

I was given an advance readers copy of this book and have decided to write a voluntary honest review. Oh wow I was just not expecting this book to break me, I mean I knew from the other books it was going to be bad, I just didn't expect to be this horrifying. You will see what I mean when you read it and can form your opinion. I wasn't a fan of Eve in the past books, now my opinion has changed of her. I love Grimm anf Bowen they are my favourite. My heart really broke for both Bowen and Eve.

Two broken people torn apart not brought back but forced together. Secrets, lies, tragedies, cruel devestation and betrayal is littered through this story, but it soon leads to forgiveness, openness, love and a life that is deserved for them. Eve and Bowen are strong people, and that is proven in this story. Can't wait for everyone else to se that.

…uh fuck Elias & Father!! I don’t think I have ever just wanted to hug characters as much as I want to hug Eve & Bowen! Holy Shit they need hugs!!

What an ending to the Horsemen. I know Bowen’s story was going to be epic. Wow! Just Wow!

The Control by Elena Monroe is the Fourth installment of The 4 Horsemen Series. There are 3 prior books that each tell a story of a male member of the 4 Horseman who are born into a Secret Society/Cult called Clave in which four young boys were molded into becoming machines and killers for the Clave.

Thus far, we’ve read Grimm, Vic, and Khaos stories. We are now reading about Bowen and Eve. It is highly recommended that you read all of the stories in order. In my opinion, as a reader, you must read the series in order from books 1-4.

Book 1 The Initiation

Book 2 The Test

Book 3 The Sacrifice

As we begin this series, you should already know some of the history between Bowen and Eve at least in the sense that Bowen and Eve’s parents arranged a marriage between them which has been known since book 1.

Throughout each of the prior books we get little glimmers of Eve and Bowen’s relationship, albeit sometimes different variations depending on whose narrating. For example, I recall Eve being referred to as Bowen’s childhood friend, other times it seems Bowen doesn’t really like Eve. I’ve also had questions as far as his sexual orientation only in terms of wondering if Bowen and Eve are really meant to be or if this book would be a MM Romance featuring Bowen and another male character.

All of these questions about Bowen and Eve’s history have FINALLY been answered in The Control. Elena Monroe has created a world of deep dark secrets, cults, LA young adult vibes and messed up personalities.

Everyone in this series is broken in some way. How can you not be when you’ve been raised to be a machine of destruction for the world? I can’t blame these young people for having terrible mental health issues after the torment their parents put them through. A society that was built to build them into these 4 Horsemen was never there to help them in any way. All of that comes to a head in book 4 when we see how depraved The Clave really is and how deep the secrets and lies really go. The twists are unbelievable, and they keep on coming all the way until the end.

There isn’t a large emphasis on romance here. This is not a standard romance novel. It’s not necessarily happy. It won’t give you positive vibes or bring about good feelings inside of you. This is a very trigger heavy book. There is no cheating, however there are a lot of other triggers.

Early on, I was taken aback by Eve’s history. Eve has her own demons, and they are so dark, ugly, cruel, and hard to read. Eve’s story was EXTREMELEY difficult to read for me due to the triggers and I didn’t know if I could even survive her scenes as a reader. Fair warning, this is heavy content.

Bowen and Eve have been promised to each other to be married since they were younger. That part I never quite understood however once we realize that the reason Bowen was in this situation was because his older twin brother died, the story starts to make more sense. We will understand all of the deep, twisted aspects of Bowen and Eve’s past and also feel so sad for them both that they’ve had to live such harsh lives.

I loved how everyone came together in this book. We see so much of Vic, Grimm, Abigail, some of Khaos and Grace. The whole crew is back together helping their own.

With each book, the men realize they need to trust in each other rather than the forces outside of themselves. This has become ever more apparent in The Control. As you’ll see, friendship and loyalty are strong here, even if they are too pigheaded to use their words to admit it. These guys love each other and would do anything for each other. Rather than a romance between Eve and Bowen, this book was also focused largely on the relationship between the 4 Horsemen.

There is action, death, rape, and betrayal. Lovers of the 4 Horsemen Series, books about secret societies and cults and lovers of twisted young adult books will enjoy this read. Please make sure you read it in order though.

I received an ARC and am leaving my review voluntarily.

The Control is about the fourth horseman Bowen and his childhood sweetheart Eve. They are casualties of trauma embarking on a journey of pain.
The Control begins with a backstory of childhood friendship between Eve and Bowen. The friendship was short but impactful. When Eve was twelve her mother uprooted her life away from Bowen. The only thing keeping hope alive was the arranged marriage.
After ten years, distance and time couldn’t change the unconditional love between them. However, trauma did change them.
Bowen is a haunted boy with demons whose emotionally unattached. He’s unhinged with reckless angry energy. Bowen is a guy who kills for fun, drinks too much, hates everyone all while being a silent sufferer. Bowen is a complex character that is difficult to identify with.
Eve is crazy in love with Bowen. She’s a wild child whose assertive and sassy. She’s a strong female character who has the will to conquer the pain Bowen throws at her. She’s a driven character with the need to provide unconditional love to the boy who still resides within the man.
Dark broken characters who lash out on themselves coping in a variety of toxic ways is part of life. When I read a character who is suffering and hanging on by a thread I long for the part of the story where the character recognises the problem and fixes it. While Bowen was this type of character his pain was very telling with very little showing. The way he functioned as a horseman didn’t exhibit any consequences for his coping mechanisms. Between Eve and the horsemen they covered up the mistakes without addressing the problem. The story focused more on his destructive behaviour rather than methods to change. I had hoped Bowen could’ve channeled that pain into something more productive.
Bowen was the mysterious dark horse character. The reader knew very little about him except the prearranged marriage to Eve. You will get a lot of pain and feel that intense pain. These two characters survived and lived through trauma, but the waters get muddied along the way and the path taken to survive is destructive and unfiltered. They do overcome quite a lot and learn a great deal about themselves. However, at times I felt the pain dominated the storyline creating a very intense and stressful read. Other times the problems seemed to manifest and compound Bowen’s pain by not using healthier methods. Without giving away too much I felt like Bowen’s choices for handling his past was a vicious cycle. He was seen but not heard dealing with a heavy situation by acting out with unrelenting anger. His spirit was mean, cruel, and angry as a result.
I was slightly disappointed by the one scene I had been looking forward to only to have it become meaningless importance. Everything that happened afterwards was brushed over far too soon with no further explanation. While Elena pointed out the trauma and created a character revolving around this trauma Bowen’s feelings were loud yet quiet. Loud in the sense of the way he coped in front of others. Facing that trauma with his childhood friend seemed to be glossed over.
On one hand Bowen was a survivor of traumatic circumstances yet he still wasn’t free to live his life without demons plaguing him. Him coping mechanisms traded one tragedy with another by masking his pain.
Maybe more is to come as well as answers. This is not the end of the Clave for these four horsemen. Now that we have a better understanding on who each of them are the next books to follow will fill in the missing pieces to complete the story as a whole. I highly recommend reading this series in order beginning with Grimm’s story in The Initiation.

He always wore pain like a designer jacket even when we were younger: true to size and dry clean only.

This was everything and more.

I didn't think I could fall for Bowen. I thought he was a darkness not even I could reach and yet my soul sung for his. Sung for Eve.

The 4Horseman Series has been a beautiful tragedy. I've loved learning about the Clave and how truly dark their world is. From Grimms books to Bowens I've been hooked. Elena did it again and destroyed me. I wept through most of this. I don't think I can truly put into words how genius this is. How broken and real this world feels.

Grimm holds a special place in my book heart always will. Reading this made that tie even stronger.

If you haven't read this series.
Please go do it. You won't regret it.

What an beautifully intense read this series is. This being the fourth book in the horsemen series is truly an amazing story, one that will leave you shocked and wanting for more. Every subsequent book in this series just gets better. Elena has built this insane cult which is dark, dangerous, brutal and full of crazy characters. With Elena’a books, as a reader you definitely get more than you ever expected. This holds true for all the books in this series. She is a masterful story teller. The characters in her book are always more than expectation, but are super well written, along with being unconventional.

Coming to my thought regarding the fourth book in this series. All the above held true. Bowen as a character I feel is the darkest of all the four horsemen. His character is one that is non redeemable, haunted by his demons and some one that you would either hate or grow to love. Everything that happened to him in the past is heartbreaking and tragic.

Eve, on the other hand, is very unique in her own rights. Unique in the sense that she is actually an amalgamation of all the actual traits of the horsemen. She hides chaos behind a calm demeanour, with an ability to read people, arrogant, deadly, and broken. Somewhere I was expecting her to be exactly the opposite, but damn this was something soo new and brilliant. It just made the entire equation between Bowen and Eve a lot more interesting and thrilling.

I can’t not talk about the plot in the story. The plot is so commendably crafted that it makes the story super angsty, darker than black, and makes putting the book down a super hard task. The manner in which all the secrets were unravelled was amazing.

This story is full of twists and turns that are super unexpected. So many things happen so fast in this story that you will always be on the edge while reading it. The control is An insanely beautiful reading experience and one that will stay with me for a long time. I would highly recommend to all the dark romance lovers out there.

The Control is Book 4 in Elena Monroe’s 4Horsemen Series and we are finally getting Bowen and Eve’s story. This book is an interconnected standalone meaning you don’t have to read the previous books but I highly recommend the whole series. We’ve been getting bread crumbs about The Clave and about both Bowen and Eve. I think reading the other books will get you into the mind space and a behind the scenes peak. Technically the story is told in dual POV but what I like about the series is we will get chapters from other Horsemen and even other characters, and it’s eye opening getting to see the story from other perspectives. Bowen is Famine and really a Wild Card. The previous books show him as quiet and scary, hiding in the shadows like a sinister ghost. Bowen is so much sadness and heartbreak. He’s the only Horsemen who’s known who he was marrying from a young age. It’s so sad that Bowen and Eve were looking forward to their marriage as preteens and then life got in the way and mucked it all up. This is almost like a friends to almost lovers to kind of enemies to lovers story and it will hit you in all the feels. Elena is so great at weaving lives together and drawing you in, that even when it’s dark and gritty and emotionally hard to read, you are already so invested that you have to keep going. Both Eve and Bowen are so broken but in such similar ways that your heart breaks for them and you really root for their HEA. They both have these dual personalities fighting for control and it’s interesting to see how they fight it out. The Clave is a cult so clearly there is some messed up stuff going on, but the bombshells that Bowen drops and the information that comes to light is Holy $h!t effed up. No wonder these boys are so broken and have become these terrible Monsters. Bowen and Eve have over the top passion, grief and protectiveness for each other. This book and this entire series is a must read!

"This isn't going to be quick.
This isn't going to be soft.
This is going to hurt before it feels good, just like us."

Storytelling – flowless and perfect as always!

Our hero Bowen – master of control, broken beyond repair, your nightmare, and your daydream, depends on the amount of booze poisoning him.

Our heroine Evey: feisty with a sharp tongue, beautiful and smart, broken beyond repair yet ready to fight after so much trauma and pain, worthy of love and adoration Bowen finally gave her and accepted he's worthy of the same.

Chemistry – amazingly perfect!

Plot – expectations to the highest – recommendations to everyone – not an easy journey for both of them, two torturous souls battling with life and emotions for each other mixed with layers of added secrets and lies that connect all of them.
I wanted to cry., then to scream,.
then to text Elena so many times… but never a doubt in my mind that they don't belong together – damn you fictional characters – you have my heart.

Ending – what?! She does know how to spice it. You know the phrase: I didn't expect that?! But really I didn't. She knows how to draw your attention. So many possibilities with this ending.

Don't get me wrong. It's standalone with perfect hea but there's a possibility for expanding this journey in so many directions. And I hope she will treat us with more delightful and spacy stories in this or maybe a new generation series.

Brutally Beautiful in all its darkness!

“This was our redemption story of how the unworthy learn to accept what we deserve.”

OMG!! This was one hell of an emotional story! There was so much angst, anger and pain written on each and every page that it destroyed me! This story is dark, brutal and gritty so be ready for this crazy rollercoaster ride of pain.

Evie and Bowen are broken people and have so many demons in their lives that keep dragging them down into the pits of hell. They can’t seem to be able to swim to the surface to get out past their darkness! Their story had my stomach in knots and my heart beating like crazy. I think these two were going to kill me! They sure tore my heart out and broke it into a million pieces with their demons. The amount of suffering and anguish with both Evie and Bowen kept me on the edge of my seat not knowing if their demons were finally going to destroy them both. Their story consumed me and left me gasping for breath at every turn.

The intensity of Evie and Bowen’s pain and despair could be felt in every word written, at times making me laugh a little, cry a whole freaking lot and beg for something right to finally happen! They don’t have an easy relationship, it’s toxic and brutal, but it is also filled with passion and raw gut-wrenching emotion.

“She tasted like caramel and absolution making me a devout. I would worship at her altar every Sunday if she wanted.”

This is a brilliantly written story filled with complex and broken characters that you grow to love deeply and a storyline that will gut you and shock you at every turn. And that ending WOW, it came out of nowhere and completely smacked me in the face.

Brutally beautiful, intense, thrilling and utterly perfect!

What a intense journey bowan and Eve took me on !
Firstly if you haven’t read the first 3 books before this one you should because it gives you a lot more context of the horseman and even a pre conceived idea of Bowan that gives his character development and journey a lot more meaning . (IMO obviously )
Having said that the character development of both bowan and Eve is really well done !
In terms of the bigger picture story we finally get some answers about Grimm that I felt were missing from the end of his book and an epic ending to something in the clave however a mother of an opening for retribution and payback and a last minute surprise at the end makes it clear this story is not over ... though the epilogue gives no clue how it turns out other then Eve have found their HEA so that keeps me satisfied haha

Awesome series that I’m loving !!

I thought I had my Horseman picked out and then came ... Bowen Astor.

Over the last few nights, Elena has put me in this perpetual haze of emotion because Bowen and Eve hit parts of my heart that I sometimes forget exist.

These are two beautifully broken souls who have been dealt the worst hands (yes multiple) possible, almost their entire lives. They have witnessed heartache and misery and felt tormented for much of their existence. Bowen is angry and pained but silently suffering and barely existing under a haze of Hennessy. Eve is strong, a bad a** fighter, and the protector, who hides under the perfectly complacent Princess facade. They are light and darkness, sun and moon. They are the agony and the joy of dancing in the rain.

When two broken halves, who are destined to be each other’s salvation, find each other, you’d hope that their broken pieces can easily fit together; those jagged lines should magically slot in place. I found myself frustrated more times than I’d like to admit because all I wanted was their HEA right away, but not all stories, just like in life, are packaged in pretty little princess pink bows. The journey these two go through is rough, painful, (at times) agonizing, but so so beautiful 🦋🥺🥰

Elena didn’t just write a romance; she wrote a masterpiece on that internal struggle to fight our demons, the value of self-discovery, the bond of brotherhood/sisterhood, the devotedness of friendship.

You’re in for a wild ride that you have no Control of but I promise you, it’s worth every single minute and every single emotion!

And a surprise book 5 (well not so surprise when Elena already announced it, but you get my point 🙂🙃)!!!
