This month’s Japanese book pick came to me as a recommendation from a friend, and I’m so glad I followed up on it. From the very first pages, the author’s quirky, offbeat writing style pulled me in. The narrative felt less like traditional storytelling and more like sitting across from a friend who’s breathlessly recounting some wild thing that happened to her – funny, surprising, and strangely intimate.

What struck me most was the author’s attentiveness to the small moments in her day. She writes with a kind of gentle mindfulness that made me pause and take stock of how I spend my own time. There’s an underlying encouragement to seize the day, but in a quiet, lived-in way that doesn’t feel preachy.

By the time I reached the end, I knew I’d be seeking out more of this author’s work. If you’re looking for something charming, observant, and slightly eccentric, this is a pick worth diving into.

エッセイ本をあまり読んだ経験がないので今まで読んできた小説本などとしか比べられないけど、いくつもの細かい作者のエピソードが綴られている上で自分の思い出から共感できるものもあれば新鮮に感じるものもあって、小説などの他のジャンルの本のように全体で繋がった１つのストーリーがある訳でもないのにも関わらず面白かった。また、読み進めていくにつれて作者の日常を大事にする心が感じられて、自分も日常の何気ない会話や出来事、いつも周りにいてくれる人達とのその時は重要に思うことのないかもしれない思い出などを大切にして覚えておきたいなと思った。
