An enchanting edition for any young child that has an interest in unicorns.
I was sent this book by the publisher for an early review and I have to say that i wasn't expecting it to be such a joy to read. The illustrations are totally stunning, the stories are diverse and fun, and it is lovely to see a book include people of so many different backgrounds amongst the magic so that children, regardless of where they live, can feel like they have a chance to discover one of the beautiful types of unicorn that the book details roam across our planet.
I am a huge sucker for anything about unicorns, and this made a really nice break from all of the dark and intense books I've been reading this month - plus there's a quiz at the back so you can discover what type of unicorn is most like you - a charming extra detail that I think most kids will love.
Plus, what a cover!
I would recommend this to anyone who loves a bit of magic.
Every time I'd peruse the aisles of Target, I'd see this book and admire it's cover. I added it to my Amazon wish list but had no plans to purchase it anytime soon. Well, I joined a FB group where you share your wish lists and randomly gift people items off their list. It's seriously such a fun group and an amazing way to spread sunshine to strangers. This book was a gift to me from a person I do not know and I was so grateful and surprised that I decided I had to read it right away.
The book is just as it sounds: A history of Unicorns. There are 8 different types of unicorns, and each are examined and a story is shared of eye witness encounters to the various unicorns. In the end there's a quiz to learn what type of unicorn you are and instructions on how to become a member of the Magical Unicorn Society (M.U.S.).
The illustrations are gorgeous and the stories take place at many different places and times. Easy for young readers but did have a few challenging words, which my momma brain liked to see.
If you will allow me to nitpick, the only thing I'd change is the writing style from story to story. Some stories are from the 14th century and some are from modern day. Some are from Europe and some from Shanghai. So with such diversity in location and time, I feel the book could be elevated even more by adding small changes. For example, in the European stories, use words like "colour" instead of "color." If the stories are from centuries earlier, I think it would be fun to challenge young readers with a more classical english or location-specific terms. The entire book reads in a modern day tone, which for me did take away from the fun idea of these stories being centuries old.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend this book to any young reader who is interested in unicorns. It's aimed at both girls and boys with its tales and the illustrations are captivating. The stories of each unicorn are relatively short, making it easy to set down and come back to later without missing anything.
Beautiful short stories, gorgeously illustrated! This second installment from the Magical Unicorn Society can be read independently of the first, but why would you not want to read both?! Where the first book focuses more on defining the different unicorn families, this book describes encounters with different unicorns throughout history. Great for bedtime stories for younger MG readers, but enjoyable for all ages!
Oh my! This was such a cute read. The illustration was beautiful. The short stories they had that went with each unicorn. I'm so happy to have purchased this book.

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
In this companion book to The Magical Unicorn Society: The Official Handbook, the narrators take a scientific tone and assume unicorns are real. The book includes a collection of stories about unicorn sightings and the variety of unicorns that are out there. Each story is around 10 pages.
The illustrations in this book are charming and there is an abundance of them all around the stories. This book straddles the line between picture book and chapter book and this will encourage younger readers to try their hand at sustained reading. That said, the amount of reading may be a barrier for the age that this book is going to appeal to, given that unicorn fans trend younger.
My niece kindly lent me this book, “A Brief History of Unicorns” by Selwyn E. Phipps, from the Magical Unicorn Society series. It is adorable. I always love the fiction books that are presented as a historical document and this one checks all those boxes. The illustrations are also unique and different from the normally elaborate unicorn artwork. The book is presented as a historical guide on the different types of unicorns in the world. It starts with the Golden and the Silver unicorns, who are presented as the originator of the different unicorn families. There are 8 stories in the anthology, each one focusing on a different family of unicorns. Rather than each type of unicorn presenting the same traits, the families specialize in different pieces of magic. For example, the Woodland Flowers focus on nature and plants, while the Storm Chasers control weather and storms. This was a very cute book that’s appropriate for younger kids. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and liked the different art style. Presenting a different kind of lore than normal for unicorns was also a lot of fun. If you’re a unicorn lover, this is a fun book to pick up for a light read and I think it’s a great gift for kids who love fantasy animals.
The Magical Unicorn Society has resurfaced to reveal another mystical offering of short tales for the unicorn devotee, with eight accounts of unicorn encounters that span time and place, from Ancient Chinese legends to pirates in the Mediterranean to modern Central Park. Since its likely that at least a few of these devotees reside in your classroom, library, or home, you'll need to assist them in this ancient quest to understand and protect these magical creatures by offering them this book. Eight unique types of unicorns are presented, along with a short story about different people interacting with each of them. The stories are brief but distinctive and engaging, making them great classroom or bedtime reading fare. At the end of the book, readers can take a personality quiz to find out what type of unicorn best represents them, study their profiles and traits, and discover what it takes to become a member of the Society themselves. Charming pastel illustrations and a pink and glimmering gold foil cover will likely prove irresistible, and young fans will be clamoring for it. Recommended for ages 6-10.
Where the Handbook was mostly facts with short stories, this book is primarily short stories, with a few pages of unicorn factoids in between each. But like the first book, it is full of magnificent unicorn art that will especially appeal to young girls
⚠️Parental Warning ⚠️
Among the 8 stories of the individual types of unicorns, there are a few Christian parents may want to be aware of and moderate as they see fit:
The Golden Unicorn Returns - There is no witch in the story but it is theorized that one may have made the endless winter, and is then immediately laughed off. A playful taunt of being an “old witch” if you’re the last one there in the race. “Stupid” is used in exasperation about a sled.
A Gallop by Gaslight, features a fortune teller that interprets a dream about a unicorn.
The Day of the Storm has an evil witch in disguise. A protagonist uses magic and whispers to cast “a magic spell.”
The Meeting of the Seven Families, a character exclaims “I swear on my life.”
In this book the president of the Magical Unicorn Society shares eight case files that describe the discovery of different types of unicorns. The colorful depiction of these magical creatures brings them to life, and the stories of how they were spotted will make believers out of those cynics out there who don't believe that they could possibly exist. The fact that these unicorns have been found in various parts of the world, even on a stretch of beach on the Atlantic Ocean and in the Austrian Alps as well as during different time periods, several centuries ago, and recently, lends even more charm and credibility to the stories. Anyone who enjoys dreaming about unicorns and how they might actually be out there somewhere will enjoy this volume and most likely start keeping an eye out for the creatures.
I happened to find this book in Target and was drawn to the beautiful cover! Then, I opened it and realized that the art inside is just as stunning.
The stories are told in the form of field notes and the history of unicorn sightings. I love the different "species" of unicorns listed and the descriptions of each. There is also a cute quiz at the end to tell you what your spirit unicorn is - mine is the Dawn Spirits.
I know that I would have loved this book as a child, but as others have said, I loved it just as much reading it now! You are never too old to love unicorns. :) And the book is just so well done, it's worth it no matter what your age.
I will definitely be looking for the other books in this series.
The Magical Unicorn Society (M.U.S) is dedicated to studying and protecting unicorns across the globe and throughout time - and now a selection of their secret files may be read by the public, revealing a shocking new discovery amidst its eyewitness accounts! Phipps, Aitch, Befort, Ritchie, Goldhawk and Goldhawk provide young readers a vibrantly illustrated collection of fun stories, weaving a delightful narrative through its cutesy visuals and simple yet charming lore. What new and surprising things shall we learn about unicorns within these pages?
I absolutely adore these illustrations. It's a beautiful book. I would have loved for these to have been more grounded in actual unicorn lore, which was my impression when I picked up the book for my daughter, but she loves the different imaginative species and that has kickstarted her own inventive unicorn streak. Not exactly what I was looking for but she loves it and that's what matters. Even my 1 year old son loves flipping through and looking at the pictures. :)
I read this when I was in elementary school and it was and still is the best unicorn book I have ever read, so if you are trying to get a gift or just give a book to a little kid who loves unicorns get this book.
My 4 year old loved this chapter book read aloud to her. Each chapter is written as a case study for a different type of unicorn. Beautiful illustrations, we only wish there was a map included but I like how each case study is set in a different (real) country.
