Fran Manushkin is the author of more than fifty books for children, including the Katie Woo series; Big Girl Panties, illustrated by Valeria Petrone; Big Sisters Are the Best, illustrated by Kirsten Richards; The Tushy Book, illustrated by Tracy Dockray; and Baby, Come Out!, illustrated by Ronald Himler and translated into eight languages. She lives in New York City.
This is a cute and short book about a girl's sloppy day in the kitchen. I thought the ending could be better, but I did appreciate the silliness. I'd like to read the rest of the series.
Katie tries to help her busy parents by cooking dinner, but only succeeds in making a mess.
I like that she models obedience and good sense by not turning on the stove unsupervised!
The second part of the story goes all Northanger abbey on us: "Wait, this is a ghost story? Where did that come from?" "Oh no. of course not. Just an overactive imagination."
I didn't really understand the jump between the cooking and the being afraid of ghosts. I think it was all for the joke of "a ghost did it" when talking about the cooking mess she made. But I still love Katie, and her good heart even though she made a mess.
A chapter book for the first-grade students at a level 1.3. She makes a mess while her mother is out of the house and frightens mom when she returns. Katie makes a big mess but does try to be helpful. A glossary in the back and a recipe.
LOVE and HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book. I consider it a "Beginning Reader-Beginning Chapter Book.". It even has discussion questions for those pain-in-the-ass overachievers (kidding)
Katie Woo is an Asian American little girl who has lots of silly adventures including ballet dancing and playing musical instruments. She also has an African American friend named JoJo who features prominently in most of the books. Great early reader! (level 2?)
Great book for a beginning reader because of the vocabulary and the chapters in it. This book also includes discussion questions, writing prompts, and recipes in the back of the book!
