This is a sweet second chance love story. It was different reading a book where the female left the male and broke his heart. Unfortunately Faith started having panic attacks because she felt she needed to be perfect. I can’t imagine what Faith went through when she left Mitch without telling him why and moving to Chicago. It broke my heart that a man preyed on Faith when she was in a bad place. The good thing that came out of that marriage was her daughter Hope. I was glad Faith decided she needed to move back home to raise Hope. My heart went out to Mitch the first time he tried to talk to Faith. I loved watching the two learn about the mature adults they had grown into. Hope was such a treat with all her cuteness. I encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
Acquired Kindle edition when offered free on Amazon.
If there were a 1.5 star rating, that's what this would get. It's not bad enough to get 1.0, so I reluctantly rounded it up to 2.0, but it's really not that good.
To expand on what I wrote in my final progress report before giving up, the whole thing read like transcripts of two people's individual therapy or counseling sessions rather than a romance novel. The two protagonists, Faith and Mitch, alternated telling their sides of the story in long narrative passages interspersed with little bits of emotionless on-the-page action. Once in a while they had conversations with other people -- Faith with her beauty salon employees or parents, Mitch with his buddies -- but even then, they were just telling what happened.
It's a lazy and very boring way to write a story.
I found myself not liking these two people very much, and that's not good for a romance novel.
Faith left the little town of Mason Creek, Montana, right after high school graduation, abandoning her great love, Mitch Collins, without a word of explanation. Giving up a university scholarship she had worked her ass off for, she settled in Chicago and went to cosmetology school. She married and had a daughter. When the novel opens, she's getting ready to return to Mason Creek, but the whole scene is confusing:
I picked up the last of my packed boxes and looked around my now empty apartment with a sad smile.
Hope and I had lived here for the last year, ever since her father died, and we’d both grown a lot in the small space.
Who is Hope? I wanted to know. Is she a child, a roommate, a sister, a friend? "Her father" doesn't automatically translate to "my husband," and though it sort of comes out that yes, Hope is Faith's daughter, I still wasn't clear on the relationship between Faith and Hope's father. Were they married? How did he die? What's going on here?
After 70 pages, I still don't know. Faith refers to him -- or to someone -- as her ex-husband, and she mentions having received an insurance settlement that allowed her to move back to Montana, buy a house, and buy the beauty salon from its retiring owner, but no details of the marriage have been forthcoming. And I thought it odd that Faith's mother, Grace, expresses doubts about the permanency of Faith's stay in Mason Creek despite the fact that she's bought said house and established herself in business. Seems pretty permanent to me!
With few details about the marriage or the death of this spouse other than he was an alcoholic and life was sometimes chaotic as a result, I'm left wondering not only what happened, but how did Faith react to it? Was there grief? Relief? Anger? And what about little Hope? Does she have any memories of her father? If not, why? If she does, what are they like? How is she handling the situation? How is it affecting her now? If not, why not? How does Faith feel about it? Basically all I'm getting for characterization is Faith walking through her days running the beauty salon and getting drunk at the bar. It's just not enough.
Mitch, on the other hand, is too much. He comes across in our sessions, or rather I should say his chapters, as a lovesick adolescent . . . girl.
As the chapters alternated between Mitch and Faith, Mitch's "voice" never established itself as distinct from Faith's. And there were passages that I found rather odd coming from the male main character in a heterosexual romance.
In a conversation with his friend Wilder, for instance:
“Take a load off and I’ll grab it,” I said, gesturing to the other chair.
“Don’t mind if I do,” Wilder said, his white teeth flashing in contrast to his dark beard.
Why do I as the reader care what Wilder looks like? And why is Mitch pointing out these details? Why is he even noticing?
So okay. Faith returns to this small town -- how small? I don't know -- and for a full year Mitch doesn't approach her. A whole effing year! He's thirty some freaking years old and he hasn't got the gumption to so much as say hello to the woman he's supposedly loved since he was fifteen? Excuse me, but are you fucking kidding me?
I’d seen her around, of course. The town was ridiculously small. I couldn’t go anywhere from one side of town to the other without running into people I knew, no matter the time of day. So, there was no way Faith could live here for a year without us running into each other.
I’d dodged her at least a dozen times.
I’d hidden behind trees, cars, even Old Man Morton once.
He hid behind trees, for crying out loud??? And this is the hero of the story? Give me a break!
Eventually there's some big Memorial Day festival in Mason Creek, and Faith, as an unattached woman, brings a picnic basket that the unattached men can bid on. (She does this because her mother suggested it, and obviously Faith has no backbone, but she also knows, just knows, Mitch is going to bid on it. . . . .) Of course, it's to raise money for the children's hospital -- because every little tiny town in Montana not only has a hospital but a children's hospital -- so Mitch bids a thousand dollars to win Faith's basket. And they have their picnic off somewhere -- the place they had their first date umpteen years ago -- and . . . .
On page 29, Faith tells me about her anxiety and panic attacks, her efforts in high school to be perfect and get this big scholarship to the university, her decision to leave town and go to Chicago, yada yada. This information isn't revealed in active, dynamic fashion; it's just told to me, like I'm her new therapist.
On page 34, she has another panic attack while dancing with Mitch in a local bar. Mitch has been telling me all about their history of dancing, when all of a sudden
“This was a mistake,” Faith said, before turning and fleeing the dance floor.
I put my hands in my pockets and dipped my chin to the ground as I struggled to shake off everything those few seconds with Faith had me feeling. I wasn’t sure if it was nostalgia, the crazy chemistry we’d always shared, or the fact that I hadn’t loved anyone since her, but I wasn’t sure I liked it.
He does nothing!! "I hadn't loved anyone since her," and now ten some years later, he's got her in his arms again, and when she runs away, he shoves his hands in his pockets, looks down at the floor, and does nothing! Seriously? Seriously?
So we get more of this chickenshit behavior on both Faith's and Mitch's part until the picnic, and they go off somewhere away from the crowded festival and on page 65 Faith tells me she told Mitch all about her panic attacks and anxiety and therapy in Chicago.
The thing is, this is the second time as the reader I've been told this. Once should be enough. The information should come out when it's going to have the greatest emotional impact on the characters as well as on the reader.
Mitch's reaction is all about him. Why didn't she tell him how stressed she was? He would have helped her! But of course she says she needed to work it out on her own.
And after that, they stop talking "about the past." Mitch tells me they talked about Mason Creek and Hope and all that, and shied away from any personal issues. He expresses no curiosity about her past, about her marriage, about her husband's death, about why she decided to come back to Mason Creek, nothing. (I don't even know if Mitch knows she's widowed. Does he think she's divorced? What does he think? Oh, wait. On re-reading it, I see he says he's heard about her husband. That's when she says she doesn't want to talk about it.)
Anyway, it was such a monstrous nothing burger that I gave up. Both of them refusing to talk to each other, refusing to confront the past, refusing to be honest with themselves: I just no longer cared. The point of a romance novel is for the reader to care about the characters, to become emotionally invested in their relationship. I frankly couldn't stand either one of them and didn't give a shit what happened to them.
I absolutely loved it! This is a well-written, second chance romance that i never wanted to put down. It had heartache and pain and hope and forgiveness and it warmed my heart so many times.
Perfect Summer is set in the adorable small town of Mason Creek. Faith and her daughter, Hope, move back after Faith left town a decade ago, with no explanation whatsoever to Mitch, or even a good-bye.
So imagine the tension and awkwardness when they run into each other often around town. The author did a great job making me feel all of it. But even though they couldn’t get away from each other fast enough, there’s no denying those old feelings, their chemistry, their love…it never really went away. And to see these two reconnect and rebuild their relationship was beautiful and sometimes emotional.
And sweet, little mismatched-shoe-wearing Hope sometimes stole the show, along with my heart. The way Mitch and Hope bonded and how much they adored each other was absolutely precious. So much cuteness when these two were together.
I enjoyed everything about this book, from the lovable characters to the small town charm and gossip, to the kitten named Prince Alice. It gave me all the feels, heart squeezes, and warm fuzzies and and put a big smile on my face.
This is the first book of this series I’ve read and I’m eager to read the books before it, and any that come after!
The Mason Creek Series is a small town romance standalone series. If you’re looking for all the swoony heartwarming vibes and a series full of second chances look no further and give this series a try! The next book on my list is Perfect Summer by Bethany Lopez. Because Bethany Lopez is a new to me author, I’m not sure what I’m getting myself into, but given the single mother and second chance nature from the blurb, I’m ready for an epic All The Feels moment!
In My Own Words:
Perfect Summer is the seventh standalone in the Mason Creek Series. This novel is told from both Faith and Mitch pov! Be prepared for all the swoony small town feels with a single mother vibe! I couldn’t put this one down!!
Mitch has only known one great love in his life. They were the golden high school couple voted most likely to be together forever! But the day after graduation Mitch’s one true love, Faith Evans, left their sleepy town without a single goodbye.
Faith had her reasons for leaving Mason Creek twelve years ago. She also had her reasoning behind coming back to the one place she’s always felt the most safe. So with her daughter in tow, she decides to build her life back up in Mason Creek. Now, with her being the new owner of Serenity, she finally feels everything in her life is falling into place. Well, everything aside from her ex-high school love, Mitch…. That’s one conversation she doesn’t mind putting off until the end of time.
My Thoughts:
When I first started Perfect Summer, I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into. I loved the initial chemistry between Faith and Mitch and that was what I was leaning on. Faith is as strong as strong can be, but sometimes even the strongest person falls from weakness. I loved her motherly instincts and the way she was with her daughter. This woman was a great mother and it showed through the pages of this novel.
Now, as for Mitch, this man wears his heart on his sleeve. And Faith has always been the owner of his heart. The first moment between them had me clutching my heart and feeling sorry for Mitch. This is a man who loves with his whole heart, a heart that never truly got over his first love. I feared this man would get his heartbroken once again.
Hope, she was the sunshine in this story! This little girl was so adorable, I legit had a smile on my face through all the moments between, not only her and Faith, but also her and Mitch! I craved to have more moments between Mitch and her, but beggars can’t be choosers.
Now onto why I gave Perfect Summer a 3 ½ Star rating….. I loved Mitch, Faith, and Hope’s story. Bethany Lopez did a wonderful job at showing fate at it’s finest where this couple and Faith’s daughter is concerned. But one thing I’m still scratching my head over is a few of the hole’s within this story. Like the conversation with Mitch’s mom that I don’t ever remember happening. And let’s not forget when Faith told Mitch at the restaurant, she would get into more detail about her relationship with Jed at another time…. Okay, I don’t remember that deep conversation happening either. And believe me when i say, I don’t think I’d forget about a conversation regarding four broken bones… I feel the connection between Faith and Mitch had the potential to grow even stronger than it was. I wanted more one-on-one conversation between the two of them, about the two of them.
Overall, I loved the premise of this story, but as I’m sitting here writing this review I’ve come to the realization that this one was simply just a like for me and not much of the love I had thought it was. There were moments I loved, but many moments I wanted to see play out, just didn’t… Bottom line, I felt Perfect Summer was fast paced and maybe a little to rushed for my liking. I wanted more of a slow down where pivotal moments were concerned. I am, however, looking forward to hopefully getting a few glances of these three in upcoming novels.
Perfect Summer: A Mason Creek Novel by Bethany Lopez. After 10years, Mitch still has yet to move on- WOW that’s a long time. And with Faith back in Mason Creek old feelings start stirring with new ones mixed in. These two cannot avoid each other or the feelings that still linger. Second chances could mean a much-deserved HEA or more devastation- are they willing to take the chance? The author does a good job keeping you vested in the story and outcomes. This book is filled with drama, personal conflicts, and heated chemistry. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This one is a second chance romance set in Mason Creek which is a typical small town where everyone knows everyone. Faith left town without warning after high school and has obviously moved on if her young daughter, who is a complete cutie pie, is any indication. Mitch stayed and has been closed off to love ever since.
They each need to face each other's truths in order to heal. There is some added drama, but overall a cute romance with a small town feel.
I voluntarily requested and read an advance reader copy.
I need to move to Mason Creek, it's absolutely perfect. I can't get enough of these stories and this one was absolutely brilliant. I loved Faith and Mitch so much and little Hope is absolutely adorable. Their story had enough to keep you interested and desperately waiting for more. A perfect read.
I love second chance and single mom romances so this had the perfect combination. Faith and Mitch took my heart along with her little girl just stole the show. I love that the story moves quickly but gives us enough feelings to understand the characters. The path to a second chance is not easy and I love how the author wove the story.
This book was perfect. I loved Mitch and his big heart. Faith was a courageous strong heroine. I love a good second chance romance and this one was the sweetest
Nice change of pace with the man being heart broken over a break up. Perfect Summer is perfect. Mitch and Faith's story is a small town, second-chance romance and I am here for it.
I'm so happy that Mitch waited for Faith (and now Hope). The population of Mason Creek is growing and Hope is going to be thrilled to be the big sister. Love can sometimes be waylaid but never deterred. Is anyone else hoping for the Kindergarten teacher romance that features Parker, Jillybean, and Hope?
⛔️ (in notes) “Oh, I, uh, have been meaning to get with you … to clear the air. I’m sorry about what happened after graduation, but, you know, we were just kids … I hope you can forgive me, and we can be amicable. I mean, we’re bound to run into each other around town.”
- h was a major bitch, she left town when she was 18 and left her boyfriend who was head over heels in love with her without a backward glance and didn’t even tell or talk to him about it, one day she was there and the next she’s a ghost. If I was in H’s place I would tell her to go fuck herself and “we were just kids” talk, she fucking hurt his feeling and he had no idea what happened to her, if she was dead, hurt, kidnapped or something, FUCK HER
This one was a cute second chance story. Finding your way back home after being gone for years and living in legit HE double hockey sticks while gone , makes for a great HEA to find your soulmate again
Second chances and new beginnings. That’s what Faith and Mitch got with this story. Faith has had it in her head that she needed to be perfect. All that worry and drive to perfection led to a spiral into panic attacks. All that she promised Mitch seemed too daunting and she left Mason Creek for Chicago. A marriage, a child, and a divorce later, Faith and her daughter Hope return to Mason Creek after her ex-husband passes away. It’s inevitable she would run into Mitch in their small town. The connection they have still has a powerful magnetic force and they find themselves drawn to each other. It’s pretty obvious to everyone that Mitch and Faith belong together. There’s no angst or real conflict. The only ruffle in their seemingly perfect summer was Faith breaking her arm during Mitch’s proposal.
This is my first book by the author and it was enjoyable. The characters had personality and a lot of charm. Their storyline was realistic and relatable. A great addition to the Mason Creek Series!
I received an advance copy of this book at my request and voluntarily left this review.
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, second chances, and heartbreak.
The below are part of this series if you want to read those books(s) first Perfect Risk (Mason Creek #1) by C.A. Harms Perfect Song (Mason Creek #2) by Lauren Runow Perfect Love (Mason Creek #3) by A.M. Hargrove Perfect Night (Mason Creek #4) by Terri E. Laine Perfect Tragedy (Mason Creek #5) by Jennifer Miller Perfect Escape (Mason Creek #6) by Cary Hart
This is Faith and Mitch’s story. When she left town she was never going to return. Now she is returning as a single parent. She knows she has a lot she will be dealing with since coming back. The biggest is the man she left behind. The heartbreak went both ways and is still there. But so is the love. Can they overcome the hurt of the past to have a future? Or will they have to finally move on in a small town because they are forced to see each other day after day? After all, first heartbreak can be brutal.
Mitch and Faith get a second chance at their happily ever after. Faith moved away from Mason Creek and now she’s back to reclaim her life and her happiness. Faith is over her not so happy marriage and has moved back to her hometown to raise her daughter. Mitch and Faith were once in love and have to get over her hurting him. Once they have done that can they get the ending they deserve? It is worth the effort? This was a great quick read with a sweet story. This cute quaint town is a blast to read about. I am truly enjoying this series. Not only was Faith and Mitch fun to read about but Faith’s adorable daughter Hope was a total scene stealer. As always I’m already looking forward to the next book.
** I WAS GIVEN AN ADVANCED READERS COPY IN EXCHANGE FOR MY HONEST REVIEW **
I love Mason creek and I want to go live there! I also love series like these bacuse they introduce you to authors you may not have looked at for whatever the reason. I know there are a few authors on the Mason Creek Series that I love and now I am starting to love them all.
Bethany Lopez is a new to me author and I have added a few books of hers to my TBR. I love the story she created for Mason Creek and there was heartache that didnt take over the whole story line. It played well off the already established characters, rather than against.
I love there there is a bigger story still developing within Mason creek and want all the bits and pieces together!
4.5 Stars I'm a sucker for a small town and single parent romance. I'm so glad I read this one. I love a great second chance romance as well. Mitch and Faith were high school sweethearts and that golden couple. Now Faith is back in Mason creek with her daughter for a fresh start. Faith's daughter Hope is so adorable. She's going to steal your heart right off the bat. Then the scenes with her and Mitch are going to have your ovaries exploding. They are such precocious moments. It made my heart so happy to see Mitch and Faith rekindling the flame that never went out for them. Though forgiveness has to made and get past the hurt from long ago. This was such a delightful light read. It brought all the heart and feels. It made me laugh along the way as well. I would so recommend this one you will get sucked right into the story.
This series is just the best! I’ve read all of them so far and the 7th one is just as good as the 1st one. They’ve all ranged from 4 star reads to 5 stars! And I’m finding all these new to me authors! Perfect Summer is the first book I’ve read by Bethany Lopez. It was about Faith and Mitch. They were the popular high school couple until Faith breaks it off suddenly with Mitch and moves away. She returns years later with her cute as a button daughter, Hope. We met Faith briefly in the previous book, she owns the salon in Mason Creek. I loved Faith and Mitch! They are two people you just can’t help but wish for a happy ending. Faith has had it rough since she moved away. And Mitch wasn’t able to completely move on from Faith. But now that they are in the same town again the sparks are as strong as ever!
I think I have said this from Book 1 going up to this Book Number 7....I love this series. I enjoy series because I like knowing what goes on in everyone's lives that are mentioned. Faith, Mitch and Hope make a beautiful family. Faith and Mitch were in love while in school. Faith left home after graduation, breaking Mitch's heart. She married another man, had their daughter and was in a very abusive marriage. He died, she returned home. They go through a lot of trials and tribulations to get their lives on track. Read this book to see what happens. It's so good.
Perfectly beautiful!!! Oh my what a story, this book had all the feels and one gorgeous little girl who steals the show. This second chance book had school sweethearts Faith and Mitch dealing with past hurts and moving forward to a perfect family. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I love Bethany’s writing and she certainly had me hooked from the start with this one. I am loving this series and at the end of each book I am counting down the days till the next one. I received this book as an arc for my honest opinion but if you like a feel good love story this is the book for you.
Returning to Mason Creek is a double edged sword for Faith. On one hand she wants to raise her daughter in the hometown that brought her so much happiness growing up but on the other, coming home means crossing paths with Mitch. Can the man she once loved open up his life to her again? Or will the reunion bring more devastation to them both? With a storyline that had me tearing up, this was a great read. Bethany Lopez has a knack for bringing real life characters into the hearts of her readers. Another great addition to the Mason Creek series.
This series continues to enthral. Faith returned to Mason Creek with her daughter Hope a year before and opened her own salon. Her former love Mitch is still there now running his own business. Mitch has never got over his love for Faith but avoids her as he was badly hurt by her before. Faith, having left to make a life in Chicago married an abusive man, the only good thing to come of it is Hope. Mitch and Faith still have chemistry and eventually they decide to give each other another chance. A thoroughly endearing story made even more so by the adorable Hope. Read an ARC for an honest review.
Perfect Summer is a sweet second chance romance about heartbreak, revelations and finally getting the chance with the one that has always owned your heart. Mitch and Faith takes on a journey of forgiveness, apologies and so many heartfelt moments. These two bring romance in plenty and gives us a little drama with a huge side of chemistry. A beautiful love story that has sparks, sweetness and a forever that leaves your heart full.
I was so needing this sweet with a bit of steam book. I have been following and enjoy reading books by Bethany Lopez. This was a second chance romance that made me smile and had a few heartfelt moments. It was almost too perfect. I wish it had been longer with more details to make it more real. I love small town romances though. Worth the read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I absolutely loved this story. It was so sweet, endearing, and has so much love in it. The writing was great, character development was spot on, and it flowed beautifully. I absolutely love Mason Creek so much. I'm excited to get more.
