I read this book for the first time last year. What a treat to have it as my read aloud with my daughter this year! Such beautiful writing. We really enjoyed the illustrated version by Inga Moore- what beautiful artistry!

Sitting here in 2024 thinking about books I read as a youngster that made a difference in my life. I'm noticing I enjoyed books about the landscape a lot. Not surprised I became a gardener. This was a magical book I loved.

i read this for the first time many years ago and loved it. i recommended it to one of my book clubs, so read it again as a much older adult. i still loved it, but for different reasons. i better understand why the children behave as they do and what shaped their lives. i certainly had a greater appreciation for all the landscape and flower descriptions. when i stopped teaching english i promised myself i would stop looking for symbolism in an author's writing -- and i am glad i did. symbolism is in the eye of the reader; no author ever leaves notes about intended symbolism that the reader might not be bright enough to catch without a roadmap.

Listened on Audible and loved this book. Loved the characters of 10 yr old Mary Mary Quite Contrary, her Yorkshire friend and animal lover Dicken, and the spoiled shut in Colin. Their discovery and nurturing of the locked up secret garden, their love of the outdoors and flowers and animals, and the changes to Mary and Colin all made me smile.

The Secret Garden shares some plot lines with two of my more memorable childhood favorites—Heidi, and The Plain Princess.
