I don't care who discredits cookbooks as non-academic. This is my bible. Lately, baking is my world, and there is no other book that I would buy for this task. A Passion for Baking has everything from the perfect gooey brownies to an array of herbed flatbreads. Yum! Bake the Carrot Cake Scones and call me over for coffee.
I have yet to try any of the recipes, but this book is total eye candy for a baker. Goldman gives great tips, and really makes you feel at home, like she's writing to a friend in her book.
This is the best baking book ever!!! I first discovered this book at my friends house. She has an extensive culinary library and this book happened to catch my eye. A few pages into this book I was hooked. Luckily for me my friend is wonderful and let me borrow the book. I knew though I needed my own copy and fast. The first recipe I tried was the White Chocolate and Vanilla Bread Pudding. I have one word for you...HEAVEN! The second recipe was the Brownie Fantasy Bars; made by my sister for a friends birthday. They were the best brownies I have ever had. By the way these recipes are also easy to make, since my sister at age 15 was able to make these brownies (she doesn't cook much either). The third recipe was the King Congo Bars. No shock here they were also super delicious. So far I have only made sweet treats from this book, but there are many savory delights to choose from. Recipes that really have my eye and stomach are the Double-Garlic Fougasse, Artisanal Black Olive Bread, and Pancetta Layered Bread. To all who love to cook and especially bake do yourself a favor and get this book. About to run to my kitchen because...I just can't wait to make another recipe from this book!!!
This is a fabulous cookbook. Every recipe I've tried has been fantastic, from the cheesecake brownies to the British Butter Cake. I haven't worked up the nerve to try any of the breads, but it is just a matter of time. One caveat: these recipes aren't low-cal and they make a lot, so if you are diet conscious make sure you have folks to share with. (Also, the carrot cake recipe doesn't list carrots as an ingredient. Has anyone else noticed this?)
You all know I am a sucker for a new baking recipe book and this one is interesting. I always try to learn one new thing from each baking book that I read and this one had a cool one- shred your butter using a grater when you want to bake and the stick of butter is not at room temperature! i liked that and the other hints in this book are for regular people baking at home! I liked that!
