Wes Markin lives in Harrogate and is the bestselling author of the DCI Yorke crime novels set in Salisbury. He is also the author of the Jake Pettman series set in New England.
This series just isn’t clicking for me the way the Yorke books did.
Markin does have that edge I like and he’s not afraid to go dark, even a bit gory when the moment calls for it, but this and the previous entry felt more like mid-series Jack Reacher than something building momentum.
Character work here is stronger, I’ll give it that. But the story kept tying itself up in knots trying to out twist itself, and I was left thinking more than once“would they really react like that?”
its not bad, just not great. I’ll keep on, mostly because I’m waiting to get back to DCI Yorke book 7 and see Jake’s story tied off properly going into that.
Ex-DS Jake Pettman is in hiding. Having fled the UK because of an organization who wants him dead, he finds himself in a small town in Maine. If any of the locals will talk, he would hear horrifying stories of evil, secrets, unexplained disappearances.
A young girl's body is found washed up on the riverbank. From the looks of things, she's been there 30 years .... and is the missing sister of the Chief of Police. He's a man who harbors his own demons ..and secrets.
The past has reared its ugly head and the man who was suspected of having something to do with the disappearance of this girl a lifetime ago is now front and center in the news again. This time, people won't let him off ...and at this point in time, it doesn't matter if he's guilty or innocent .... someone is going to pay.
With lots of suspects to follow, Pettman finds himself once again embroiled in a chase for a murderer. The suspects are many and varied. It seems like the entire town is hiding something ... or someone. But why?
This is well-written with twists and turns along the way. The characters are deftly drawn and I like the blend of professional with the personal lives. Although this is 2nd in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. However, I do recommend reading in order ... the backstory is well worth reading.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
4.5⭐️ Gore score 3/5 Although early on the meaning of the book title is revealed early on, I’m not sure that it grabs me. The cover works ok.
#2 in the Jake Petreman series. Now don’t faint as I have actually read these 2 books in order. You really need to read them in order as some of the story is a continuation from the first book. This book covers 3 timeframes nearly 50 years ago, 30 years ago and the goings on in the present time.
It immediately grabbed my attention, but then suddenly switched direction, and jumps around a bit. It took a little while to settle back in but it soon starts to come together. There are 2 similar female names which I got confused at the start.
I like the writing style it,it’s easy going. You get the US flavour. It has a really good pace, with likeable characters with Jake having Piper and Peter for help. The character development is good with gaps being filled in from the last book.
I will mention that there is animal abuse in this book, but only a brief mention, nothing like the level of the first book. Although I don’t think it was absolutely necessary for this storyline.
There are threads continuing into the next book as the story continues, which I look forward to.
Fast-paced! Riveting! Emotional! Suspenseful! Compelling! Complex! This book brings it ALL! It was an artful melding of twisted psychological thrills and nail-biting suspense. THIS is how you do a second in series and keep a reader coming back for more!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
This is the second book in the series and, for full enjoyment, you really do need to have read the first, The Killing Pit, before this one. So, with Jotham gone, it's time for Blue Falls, Maine to heal. Yeah right - it's be a boring book if that happened. And anyway, there's still some fall out from that to resolve. And a new crime to solve too. This time we have the body of a young girl turn up in a river. Her teeth are missing which is reminiscent of a previous, still unsolved, crime. It's a bit close to home for one of the residents, and this discovery will be that catalyst for a whole load of shenanigans that ensue... Shenanigans which mostly begin in the past, with a feud, where bad blood is formed. Obviously Jake wants to be in on all this, he is a cop after all - well, sort of, by default anyway. Although being on the run still, hiding from some very bad people, it's not really a good idea to be in the limelight... Still, when did that ever stop Jake? Oh my days, if you thought this place was a bit depraved in the first book - you're in for a real treat in this one. We have it all here - so much going on but never did it seem to be busy or overloaded. The author manages to strike a good balance. He has taken a character from another series featuring Michael Yorke (also a good read, check them out), and moved the setting to the US and made him shine. The supporting cast is just as well created and those who we had already met in book one continue to develop in this book, along with some new ones. All easy to get to grips with and connect to in some way. Mostly disgust in some cases! The storyline is a bit harrowing but then again, you'll have already read book one so you should be prepared for that. This author definitely doe not pull his punches and I did have to pause and take a breath every so often during my time with the book. All in all, a cracking addition to add to a brilliant series opener. With some stuff still unresolved for Jake, I'm really excited to see what the author has in story for him for next time.
What a fantastic sequel to The Killing Pit; one of my rare, read it in a day books, I couldn’t wait to finish it (in a good way). I would strongly advise reading The Killing Pit first, as this book begins where that ended. And what a beginning… I dislike the cliché ‘hit the ground running’, but that is exactly what this book does. I love Wes Markin’s books precisely for this reason; the pace never relents, the story is well-structured & you never know what direction he is going to take you in. Jake Pettman is, technically, a UK policeman but he finds himself in Blue Falls, Maine, trying to escape an operation that went wrong. As I’ve already said, this book picks up from the first in the series & I don’t want to recap that plot. Suffice it to say, Sheriff Gabriel is still out for revenge & determined to solve the mystery of his sister’s disappearance 30 years earlier. But how does this link to the deaths of two teenage boys ? This is the crux of the plot but there is so much more & a good many twists & turns. This being Wes Markin, I feel a warning is necessary as there is graphic content but not in the same league as The Killing Pit. As I said, I finished this in a day, I found it a very easy read despite the subject matter. There is going to be a third instalment, & I cannot wait to see what is in store for Jake & the other characters involved. Highly recommended - read both books before Blue Falls is visited again, you’ve got time.
The second book in the series and personally I would recommend reading book 1, The Killing Pit, before reading this. It really sets the scene for this book. I love this authors books and this one is no exception. It is fast paced, well written and a proper page turner.
Briefly, Jake Pettman left the UK and is ‘hiding out’ in Blue Falls, Maine. When a skeleton of a young girl is found in the river the sheriff, Gabriel, believes it is his sister who disappeared 30 years earlier. The sheriff, who is holding a 14 year old girl in his cellar, believing himself in love with her, is out for revenge. The body in the river had no teeth, the same modus operandi as a double homicide in this small town, and one which set two families against each other. Can Jake figure out who the murderer was before anyone else dies?
My normal warning for a Wes Markin book; they are graphic in places and you should be aware of this, although I don’t think this is quite as bad as The Killing Pit. A couldn’t put it down book for me. Despite the nature of the books I find the writing style easy to read. It was another great book.
With issues still unresolved we are definitely looking at another book in the series, and the last according to the acknowledgments. I for one can’t wait ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ex Detective Jake Pettman has been in Blue Falls for months now ..still living at The Blue Falls Hotel ..And in this time he has ridden the Falls of one of the most evil of men - Jotham Macleod..The Falls it seems is healing .When the body of a young woman is found in the Skweda River , a place given its name long ago by the Abenaki Indians, the case is handled by Lieutenant Louise Price of The Main Street Falls due to the sensitivity of the case ..And as Chief Gabriel Jewell is told to step away, Jake Pettman, still thought of as an outsider, can't help getting involved ..It's a case that brings two cold cases together...taking him to The Forest Edge , a place of such beauty ..where just a stone's throw away on an old dirt track lies a farmhouse. It will lead Jake to be reunited with faces old and new ..But just as life is neither good or evil but only a place for good and evil ...As the dark past collides with the present , the sins of Blue Falls come tumbling out ..and with them comes a darkness that not anyone could have foreseen..A Darkness that will change everything ...A Cold Dark and Electrifying read ...
What a follow on from The Killing Pit, where as I found Fire in Bone a slower pace to start with, oh my goodness, it soon had my heart pounding wondering what dark secrets Wes Markin would divulge, and what was in store for for the residents of Blue Falls?. Chief of Police Gabriel Jewel is living on the edge, when a young girls skeleton is discovered in the River Skweda he is convinced it holds the key to his Sisters disappearance 30 years ago, and is there a connection to the brutal murders of two young boys, whose deaths remain a cold case 50 years later. One particular thread following on from the first book really makes my stomach turn. Jake Pettman is soon drawn into the mystery and upsetting some of the locals again. I love the rawness how the author brings his characters alive, some so shockingly matter of fact, my brain is still reeling. I am actually afraid to learn what Wes Markin has in store for Jake, his friends and Blue Falls, and that cliffhanger involving his friends and family in England……
After Jake rid the town of blue falls of the devil.. Was there really a monster as big of the previous one hiding in the shadows?? The answer to this is in this book. I knew there had to be a 2nd book as no author would love an innocent 14 year old girl locked up in the celler without a follow up.. But this follow up took the level of violence to a whole new level. Before you read this book you need to read book 1 but be aware no one is safe from murder.. Woman children oaps.. There all fair game.. This book isn't for the faint hearted but its one to keep you on the edge of the seat. I now know this is a trilology and I very much doubt there will be a happy ending for anyone but I can't wait to find out
This 2nd book is the Jake Pettman series finds Jake still in the backwater US town with problems to dealt with.
After getting rid of the monster In the first book, you wouldnt think things could get much worse.... but this is Wes Markin, and he’s an absolute master at the dark, dangerous and macabre.
A story that takes us back to the 70s, that involves bodies turning up in a river with missing teeth, with fiendish local families, twisted police and manic residents, Markin really knows how to spin a dark story and often horror filled story and while this has elements of horror it feels very much more a crime thriller this time around.
The story is absolutely jet paced, action packed and never lets go of its iron grip on you until you reach the end and are still left gasping for the next part of the series.
Intense, powerful and above all highly entertaining story telling that packs a massive punch, this is Markin at his best.
So here we are back with part two of the series starring the man who isn't quite Jack Reacher. That's not a bad thing (not quite being Jack Reacher that is), since the Reacher books are into as much of a formula as the Spenser books were.
This series is quite fresh. It also doesn't pull any punches as far as depicting the things that can happen when things get nasty. So not a book for the squeamish.
I'd suggest reading the first in the series (The Killing Pit) before reading this one, since you really want to have all the context within which this is set.
You'll want to know what happens in the next instalment, as the seeds have been firmly planted in this one.
Whoa, what a ride. I mean this just fies along, bam bam bam, shock after shock. No holds barred, no slow build up with the action. Bam, done, off again. I was looking forward to this after the Killing Pit. Jake Pettman is still on the run and it seems is starting to feel somewhat settled When the skeleton of a young girl is dragged out of the Skweda it opens up many old wounds. Seems the people of this town are out to settle scores, and that they do, in a very dramatic, violent and bloody way. Then, as if you hadn't been through enough, and your heart is threatening to thump out your chest, Wes leaves it on a cliffhanger ready for book 3. Thankfully that is coming soon
Following on from the first book in the new Jake Pettman series, as usual, you're brought straight into the thick of things. The pace is relentless, which is a big plus for me.
You really do have to read the 1st book though to get the background of where Jake is living and the characters involved.
The book covers several decades from the murder of 2 teenagers as well as the disappearance of a young girl, the sister of the current police chief. It's another terrific read from Wes and while some of the threads in the story end, there is still one to continue to the next book. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on that.
This is the second in the Jake Pettman series and picks up where the first novel ends. Jake is pursued by his own demons, but still strives to do the right thing.
When the body of a young girl is found in the Skweda River, the case is taken away from Blue Falls Chief of Police, because he is too close to it. Jake can't help but get involved, even though he remains an outsider in the town.
This story is riveting, horrifying and deeply disturbing, and sets things up for electrifying finale in the last book of the series.
All I will say is that I'm not planning on holidaying in Blue Falls anytime soon, little but too much murder and mayhem for my taste!!
Jake Pettman is a tough as nails character who can't turn his back on someone when they need his help to correct a situation. His methods may not always be within legal parameters which can be a problem in itself. There is plenty of suspense and action in this story that kept me turning the pages because the past ends up colliding with the present in ways that set off fireworks within some characters. There is quite the twist to the "Whodunnit" question being asked and it is revealed in a spectacular way. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
A terrific follow on from The Killing Pit (book one). Fast paced, gory, violent and shocking. Loved all the action and suspense packed into this well written and intriguing thriller. What the hell is going on at Blue Falls? Seems like the place is cursed! Maybe it is, the history of Blue Falls and its inhabitants go back a long way but memories are still very ripe and very much at the forefront in peoples minds. How many more skeletons are in the closet, and can Jake Pettman unearth them? Does he even want to! Can't wait to find out.
There seems to be more than one reason for my heading. At least two reasons I can think of now that I finished this second Jake Pittman thriller. I could tell you what I mean, but what would be the fun in that? This story had more twist and turns in it than any mountain I've ever been on. Fast paced isn't the half of it. You wouldn't believe it if I told you, so you'll have to read it for yourself. And while you contemplate that, ill be reading the next one in this series!
This is the second in the Jake Pettman mysteries. A young woman’s body is discovered in the river. It’s been there a long time. How are the town’s inhabitants involved in this and old murders. We met all the key inhabitants of Blue Falls in The Killing Pit and I feel it would be helpful to read that first. I did enjoy this book and was well entertained by the plot. I find Wes Markin books very easy to read
The intrigue, the surprising twists, absolutely brilliant and I can’t wait for the next one coming….
A thriller, a mystery, people to hate and people to love. I recommend this to everyone and as I’m already hooked by Jake, you will be too!
I am surprised that there are four star reviews as the reviewers seem to really enjoy the book. As far as I am concerned, this series is at least five plus plus plus stars.
Jake comes upon a historical mystery in the town of Blue Falls. The body of a young girl, sister to the Chief of Police, is found in the local river. There are historic rivalries in the town to take into account, and a killing of two boys, around the same time. He and the local police work to discover who killed them. The story cracks along at a great pace and if you love a gruesome story, this will tick all your boxes. I enjoyed it a great deal.
Sorry did,nt hit the spot for me just a continuation of the first book and i should imagine the third and fourth will be in the same vein. We are left with a deliberate cliffhanger to inspire you to buy the third book i do not appreciate this type of writing i like a story in one book mainly. Basically its the same ,very same as the first book and also very predictable so more books will i be reading in the series. bye ,bye jake.
Great series and the twist is superb. Read practically in one sitting. Some very dark and upsetting parts, but an excellent story, twist and a shout out to DI Yorke. Poor Jake, he really knows how to get in the shit and the depth varies considerably. Hopefully he'll have some luck in the next book but I somehow doubt it.
Think "Hatfields & the McCoys" on steroids! Small town politics, bloody murders, vigilante justice, twists and turns that will cause you whiplash trying to keep up! Fast pace page turner with grizzly violence that will make your hair stand on end! Loved it, highly recommend, starting next in series right now!
A typical mystery. Suspense and character development good. The setting is underdeveloped and could add a lot more to the story if used better. The biggest issue I had was the poor grammar, repeated words and incorrect words used eg. 'marauding ' instead of 'mascarading'. This is one example. The manuscript needs closer editing. That's the main reason for the 2 stars.
The story kept my interest and has many interesting turns, hence my 4-star rating, my minimum for reading these Goodread books; however I could not recommend this book to anyone else because of the brutality and violence depicted. I believe the author must have had a rough life. Fire in Bone left me with no desire to read the next in the series.
2nd book in the series. Please read book 1 first. But be aware nobody is safe and could be killed at any point. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. There is another book in the series. I can’t see it being a happy ending. Violent in places but very well written.
This is the second book in the series and a continuation of the first so you really must read them in order to get the best from the book Well written with an excellent plot, the characters haa as be been further developed in this book and really engage the reader A fantastic read!
Quit reading less than 40 pages in. My thoughts in the first 10 pages in was what idiots. Then the plot just got really ugly. Think they need a much better, more accurate, description of this book.
Having read book 1 i had to give Jake Pettman a chance, still an improbably gruesome tale of events in hillbilly USA and also ventures into sadistic minds that were introduced in book 1. As book 1, read with an open minded view of a town you would not want to visit
