Hissa Warrior #1

Rescuing Halin

Rate this book
Mian Sorrow, independent bounty hunter, has dedicated her life to chasing down the same kind of raiders that killed her parents. When a defenseless transport gets attacked there’s no question she’s going to intervene. But rescuing Halin, the handsome Hissa on board, is one thing. Being talked into a suicide mission to the Bicoma system is something else entirely.

Against her common sense she finds herself agreeing to help the attractive Hissa warrior and acting as his personal escort to Bicoma. As they travel together, Mian finds herself getting attached to the charming male. He’s everything she likes: adventurous, skilled, fun, and fearless.

Assuming they survive a visit to the Bicoma home world, what happens when the mission is over? What happens when she needs to go back to hunting down raiders and he returns to his people?

She’s dedicated her life to fighting raiders. Can she give that up for love?

This is a stand-alone 69K word novel with an HEA. There will be space battles, harrowing rescues, and two individuals figuring everything out. This work of fiction is meant for mature audeances, 18+ readers only.

Not so thrilled that the book is in third person present tense. I like third person, but it's normally in past tense... present tense is used for first person. However, the writing was good enough to pull me in despite the awkwardness of present tense and the editing was excellent.

Pacing of the story was good and very interesting how just when I thought the story was over, a new complication appeared. I really liked the FMC, Mian. The blurb of the book made it sound like she's full of bitterness and vengeance and is single-minded about catching raiders. But this is not at all how she's portrayed in the book. She's shown as compassionate, intelligent, and capable. Far from being grim and unhappy, she enjoys fighting the raiders and the rush of adrenaline that comes from a successful skirmish with them.

The author did a good job of showing us how capable Mian was, instead of just telling us. We got to see Mian in action several times and there was never a TSTL (too stupid to live) moment. Mian thinks quickly on her feet and is very good at combat tactics. When she meets Halin, our MMC, Halin's respect for her abilities wars with his desire to keep her away from danger.

I liked Halin too and thought that the poor guy got a bum deal in the book (can't give plot points away). I feel he is overshadowed by Mian, though, as throughout the story, she is the one who does most of the planning, leading and rescuing. This is not to say that he is a weak male or that he's not capable, but due to circumstances in the story, he couldn't be the usual alpha protector that we normally see in alien sci-fi romances.

At the end of the story, I thought Mian also got a bum deal as she has to deal with something she never thought she would have to deal with. I felt like her choice got stolen from her and this is never really explored. We don't get any explanation of what caused her to make the choice in the first place and how she feels now that it was been taken away from her, apart from the initial shock. I really expected a bit more angst here -- maybe resentment, panic, and definitely fear about how her life was about to change completely.

Halin and Mian's love story was sweet, but I did feel that I didn't really see him shine in terms of taking care of her. It's an unusual plot in this respect and something different from the norm. Again, it was because circumstances made it that he wasn't able to take care of her, not that he didn't want to. Good thing Mian is not the type of woman who needs to be taken care of. But she's also not belligerent or aggressive, so not like OTT badass or like an "I have to prove to you that women can also do it" kind of female. I felt that the emotional connection wasn't as strong as I'd like and the 'romance' element was slightly lacking. But it was a good read and deserves 5 stars.

Rescuing Halin

This was a tough book to read. There are some spoilers in this review but I wanted to give a thorough accounting of why I gave the book only one star. It's the first book in a series and these are usually not the best books. It takes time for the author to bring the world into being. All the characters are new (we didn't get to meet them in previous books). The reader is new to the species that the MMCs are from so there's a lot to learn.

This book was even more difficult than usual because the author decides to introduce DV between the main characters. She also decides to have them engage in BDSM. There's nothing wrong with having characters like BDSM but I don't think it needed to be in the same story with DV.

The DV is not because the MMC is a habitual abuser but because a separate species decided to use the main characters as test subjects in an experiment. This is problematic for a lot of reasons. His behavior is inconsistent and she forgives him way too quickly, long before we know why he is behaving the way he is. This pattern of violence and forgiveness is common in abusive relationships and I found it more upsetting than the actual fighting. She should have waited to forgive him until there was actual evidence that he wasn't a repeat offender.

Once we do find out that his abusive behavior is not his fault, we are supposed to shift the blame to the aliens who manipulated them. And they don't get near the punishment they should have for their casual disregard of the character's lives and emotional well being. Just as I would not have trusted him again so quickly, I would not have walked away from the meddling aliens without something at least like a serious lecture and a punch in the throat.

There is this lovely sentiment about the Hissan culture - "Women were the heart of us. They were our beauty, our love, and our souls. We’re nothing without them.” - and yet he is violent with her. And the aliens disregard his abuse and actually say, “Now you are here with no marks of abuse on your body. He kept you safe and protected, even though he can no longer even think with language, only feelings and images.” He actually did abuse her so this is a direct contradiction with the text and he did nothing to keep her safe or protected from himself.

In the end, we put books down and go back to the real world where DV is a frequent occurrence, it is not caused by aliens controlling people's minds, it is caused by repeat abusers who do not change, and lots of partners and children are murdered by it every year. So reader beware. This book is problematic.

Sadly not as good as the authors other series but still enjoyable enough for a classic alien/human stand alone romance

Enjoyable read, I was into something light
I am curious about the other couples. Intriguing new species and way of creating human babies.

It’s different than the pet stories I have been reading. That was fun but I read too many too fast, so I got bored.
Then read some other alien stories, and now back to this author

This book was fun the sex scenes are not too explicit and enjoyable. There is some violence against the female lead and she forgives the male lead for it a bit too easily for my comfort though there are plot reasons I think I would still be unlikely to forgive what she does.

OMFG! This was extremely triggering. The trigger warnings at the beginning were extremely misleading. There's a DV scene that gets later downplayed as "manipulation" by these other aliens on MMC. Reading it it does not feel like this guy was manipulated. It feels like an abuser justifying his behavior, and essentially blaming the woman because "If she just listened, it'll be okay". I hate this guy.
And not only did this “scene” go on for more than 10% of the freaking book, during the time he's got her restrained he also SAs her! It's, again, downplayed as not that bad because he's not doing any penetration, just oral sex. Like that wasn't just as traumatizing. I couldn't continue, not knowing that this was going to be forgotten and forgiven. Not knowing that he's not gonna get any consequences from this. Not knowing how he constantly justified his horrifying behavior because she didn't talk to him. Not knowing that this attack wasn't the first time he had gotten violent. There's a scene at the beginning when he attacks a friend of FMC because the poor guy hugged her. I simply could not finish.

An enjoyable sci-fi romance.

I really enjoyed this Mars Needs Women romance. The plot was tight and exciting. The mystery of what was wrong with the hero, making him behave so erratically, added great tension to the plot. The characterization was great, with both hero and heroine being sympathetic individuals with some nuance. The development of the romantic relationship was hot, with a heat level of four chili peppers and great tension between the protagonists. I will be keeping my eye on this author. I have liked everything that I have read by her so far. I wish she had better cover art and design. I would never have picked one of her novels to read because of the poor quality covers, but one of her novels had very good reviews. I skeptically tried it and was pleasantly surprised.

Wonder start to the series

Oh so much to say. Malin is a very independent woman. Grew up fast and learned to hold her own. Halin is an honorable Hissen warrior who fell head over heals for the formidable human woman. The tragic history of his people push them to the limits.
Very good writing with developed and rich characters. Very clever and believable plot. Can't wait to read the next story.

Found Family

Mian saves a ship with only one life form and no weapons. When the passenger boards, he has a terrible wound. She fixes him up and hopes for the best. When Halin wakes up, he hires Mian to take him to a mysterious system.
Traveling leads to explosive chemistry between the two. When they get to the mysterious system, everything is not as it seems.

As always there's found family here and a great love of the humans they find.

This is such a great start to a series! The Hissa’s plight definitely plucked at my heartstrings and I definitely cheer them on they are striving to rebuild.
Halin was such a great character and it was breaking my heart seeing him struggle like that. I’m so glad Mian was such a strong female main character. She was his match, his mate, and so strong to be willing to work things through after things went so wrong. Loved loved loved it!!!

Great plot and world building

The plot thickens! The story starts out a little too easy that I thought it might fall flat. However, it builds and twists then you're hooked. The characters were easy to love from the very beginning. I'm looking forward to more from the Hissa and the Decanted.

Manipulated

An interesting and unique alien romance with hunky warriors and a feisty almost human female. The world building was amazing and the characters well developed and engaging. The weird, powerful aliens that were responsible for Halin’s mental decline bear watching in my opinion. I look forward to the next book.

No I’m sorry I don’t care why he hit her alien manipulation or not it was disturbing and also disturbing she forgave him so quickly. Let’s not forget how violent he was to the trader on the station before he already met the manipulative aliens. This book is abhorrent and I was so hopeful at the start.

Good sci-fi romance

I was happy to find this new-to-me author and they did not disappoint. There was a tricky issue of domestic violence, but I felt like it was dealt with head-on and in an honest way.

An interesting and fun adventure in a future universe. The large hero has been attacked by raiders on an unarmed ship. Only to be rescued by a female raider hunter. Their mutual love of fighting brings them together.
