About the author

Karlludwig Opitz was born in Regensburg in 1914. In 1931 he join the French Foreign Legion. After returning home, he begun working as a journalist and in 1936 he was forced to obligatory military service but he went to prison for alleged treason. Rehabilitated in 1941 he was sent as a soldier in Africa and later in Normandy. After the end of the war he became city councilor in Zittau (GDR) and newspaper editor but was arrested again by the MWD in 1948, and sent to the penitentiary of Halle for allegedly collaborating with the “class enemy”. Dismissed in 1949 he continued working as a journalist and publicist. In 1955 he wrote the novel Mein General anti-militaristic and satiric work about his personal experience in the army. He was awarded with the Carl von Ossietzky Medal.

There was supposed to be satire. Maybe it's my bad Czech, but I didn't get the joke.

Cheap buy though, got it secondhand and it's not a long book.
