The Woman in the Water

My sister Holly is dead.

I still can’t bring myself to say those words out loud. Even as I catch my first glimpse of sunlight on the lake, as I approach the small town where we grew up. I promised myself I would never go back there. That it would be safer for us both if I stayed away forever…

But Holly’s little girls need me. They have no-one else. And they might be in danger.

Because I know Holly’s death wasn’t an accident.

She didn’t slip and drown out by the old boardwalk, surrounded by trees and dark water. She would never have gone there, if she had a choice.

Someone has done this to keep her silent.

If whoever killed Holly knows my secret too, then I need to find them before they find me.

Otherwise, I’ll be next.

An absolutely gripping, twisty psychological thriller about secrets between sisters that will keep you turning the pages late into the night. Perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train, The Woman in the Window and The Silent Patient.

Felicity receives a phone call to say that her sister Holly has been found dead in a swamp, presumed to be an accident. Felicity is named as the emergency guardian for Holly’s two children Tess and Frankie so she flies back from the Virgin Isles to confront the issues that drove her away thirteen years ago. The story is told Before and Now.

In places the story gets as murky, stained and dark like the swamp especially as the truth emerges about why Felicity left and what happens to Holly. There are some good undercurrents in this and a building atmosphere of gossip and judgement about both sisters. In addition, there are problems from Tess and some unsettling and scary events that happen. The setting is really good, the swamp, there’s an old fairground complete with Ferris wheel, there’s a pine forest which adds more darkness and then meteorological conditions such as fog provides claustrophobia to the already packed atmosphere. The descriptions of the area are very good enabling you to visualise the action and a spooky, ethereal and ghostly feel is added with legends from the past and weird events that occur in the swamp. The characters are all good especially noteworthy is the portrayal of Tess who is very troubled and torn. This is a good domestic noir with suspense, tension and uncertainty about whom you can trust with twists and turns in the storytelling that cause you to change your thoughts about what is going on! The storyline builds to an action packed crescendo which is maybe a bit melodramatic for my taste but it is enjoyable. The pacing is mostly on point though drops off occasionally when there’s some superfluous detail that gets in the way!

Overall, atmosphere wins the day with this one with an absolutely terrific setting.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Bookouture for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

The Woman in the Water by Kelly Heard is a slow paced psychological thriller. I would first warn readers that this author’s writing style is a bit different from your normal thrillers in the way romance seems to overpower the storyline as I also found in an other book I’d read. Even being a romance fan it would seem that it didn’t really mix well for me in these books.

The story in this one features Felicity who had left her home and her family years before when a mysterious event in her past forced her away. Felicity seems to have kept in touch with her sister, Holly, over the years so it rocks her world when she receives the news that Holly is gone. Felicity has been named as guardian to Holly’s children so she returns home to take care of them and find out just what happened to Holly.

The first thing about The Woman in the Water that didn’t overjoy me while reading was it goes at a really slow pace not letting you in on things for quite a long time. As someone who loves to be drawn in and on edge with this genre I feel like it was just too slow for me. As I also mentioned the protagonist returned to an old relationship in the story and with the lack of urgency in the mystery it felt as if this was just too focused on that relationship instead of giving me any huge twists or turns I crave. Others have enjoyed this one but for me it only rates at two and half stars with a style that just isn’t my personal favorite.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

3.5 stars, rounding up.

Rich in atmosphere, the creepy swamp and abandoned fairgrounds were the perfect setting for this psychological thriller.

Returning to your small hometown and being forced to face your past and all the juicy little secrets that come with it is one of my favorite troupes. The author, Kelly Heard, does a great job layering in the mystery throughout the story and keeping the stakes high.

If you like plenty of red herrings and a hefty cast of characters in a whodunnit storyline, then put on your detective cap and take a stab at this one. 🕵️‍♀️🕵️‍♂️ It kept me guessing with many little twists and misdirections that just when I thought I had something figured out, turns out I didn't.

I noticed this in the author's bio: "Writing love stories dressed up as suspense"
Nailed it. But not in a good way. The "love" story here was forced and slowed down the pacing. There's an intruder in the house, so let's pause and have a passionate hug while we profess our love. A child is missing, seems like a great time to have an intimate embrace and play hard to get instead of searching for said missing child. You get my point...

Overall, it's a twisty, enjoyable psychological thriller with a satisfying ending. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for an ARC of this book. #TheWomanInTheWater #NetGalley

If there are ghosts here, I don't want to be counted among them.

What a pleasant surprise, this ARC was! It might be one of the best thrillers I've read so far, actually.
Heard's super engaging writing reminds me a lot of Megan Miranda's (whose books I simply adore) and the whole mystery thing was super intriguing.
Felicity was a great main character, and although I found her a bit annoying and gullible sometimes, I also kept rooting for her through all the book.
I'm not giving the book 5 full stars because the plot got a little messy and trite in the last 50 pages and because the ending was easily predictable. I also wasn't a big fan of the dialogues, but the narration altogether flowed well enough to make up for it.
Overall, I enjoyed this book very much and will definitely keep up with this author's work in the future.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.

My thanks to Bookoutre, Kelly Heard and Netgalley. What surprised me the most about this story was how much I came to love it. I had a few doubts at first, and even knowing who the "big bad" was, somehow didn't deter me. Heck, I loved these characters! I look forward to more from this author! Also, it was just a reminder that if I'm ever near a swamp, then stay away! Makes for some sinister reading though!

Felicity gets a phone call to tell her her sister had drowned in a swamp. The sisters had been estranged through a series of events that made one sister flee and the other one stay. Felicity is now taking care of Holly's two daughters, Tess and Frankie. She also wants to look into her sisters death as she doesn't think it was an accident. Is it related to the events that took place in the past? Does this mean that Felicity and the girls could also be in danger?

This is a gripping, page turning fast paced read. Filled with twists this psychological thriller will keep you on your toes. This is a really good family drama with a great plotline. Some of the story was a bit predictable but I was hooked from the first couple of chapters.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author Kelly Heard for my ARC of #TheWomanInTheWater in exchange for an honest review.

When I started reading this book, I felt a lot of similarity there with the book, ‘Into The Water by Paula Hawkins’. The plot, where the elder sister drowns, younger one feels it may be a murder, the drift between the younger and older, the misunderstanding between them is also vaguely on the same matter, the way the younger one only listens to the last distort voice message of the else one, even the bracelet missing, etc, all this seemed so much similar. I didn’t feel good knowing this.

But then as the story continued I understood that it was a different one. It was a different story, a lot of suspense and mystery there, and it was a good read.

Coming to my rating : out of 5 stars
Cover : beautiful and attractive ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Title : apt ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot : good ⭐️⭐️
Character development: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Writing style : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Originality : ⭐️
Overall : I would be giving 1 stars, but the remaining story was good so I’m settling for 2 stars ⭐️⭐️

Felicity is truly saddened that her sister Holly has been found dead. She rushes to her two nieces, as she is named their temporary guardian. Felicity feels she owes much more than to her nieces. Felicity plans on finding out what reay happened to Holly, even though the discovery will raise secrets of the past.

As things begin to eveolve in this story, it becomes clear why Felicity left and had never planned to return. The story is delievered in then and now, and it it the then part of the story that is mired deep in intrigue. Not only did events of the past surround a tragic death around a swamp, Holly's death happens near that very same area. Could what happened in the past have anything at all to do with Holly's death?

Just as determined as Felicity is to uncover hidden secrets, there is at least one person who woul rather keep things quiet. Will the strange activities suddenly happening to Felicity present even more danger to her? What of her nieces, how are they coping with their mother's death? This multi-layered story is filled with intrigue, danger, a spooky vibe and a thrilling conclusion.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Felicity is the temporary guardian of her sister, Holly's two nieces. Even though she never wanted to return to her hometown she rushes to be with them when Holly dies. But what actually happened to Holly? The Woman in the Water follows Felicity as she endeavours to find out, but she knows her delving will bring hidden secrets to the fore possibly with terrible consequences...

Told in a 'then' and 'now' format I thought this was a compelling tale. It jogs along at a comfortable pace, it's extremely well-plotted and the characterisation is also very good. It has a tangible level of spookiness and boasts a thrilling ending. Definitely worth reading so grab yourself a copy!

The woman in the water was a pulse racing suspenseful story.
I’ve been reading all the author’s books in the last year and I already knew what to expect from this story.
How far will you go to protect your family or siblings?
This is a raw, twisted story about family secrets and so many hidden truths that will come out one by one in this fast paced thrilling novel.
I had my theories and roughly an idea what actually happened in the night Holly died but I must admit that I was still shocked by some events in here.
Another must read story from a must read author.

Felicity is pediatric nurse currently working in the Virgin Islands. She gets a call saying her sister, Holly, has been found drowned in the swamp not far from their home. Felicity’s old friend, a policeman, was the one to call her and asks her to come home. She has been named the emergency guardian for Holly’s daughters, Tess and Frankie. Their father is unable to care for them.

Felicity picks up the girls from her aunt’s house and heads to her mother’s house where they will stay. She and her mother have never had a good relationship.

Felicity begins to delve into what happened to Holly because she is convinced someone killed her and it was not an accidental drowning or suicide. When she begins to run into people she used to know, she starts to put the puzzle pieces together of events that happened years ago determined to find the answer to her questions.

This is a dark story as you surround yourself with slimy swamp water, vines, and tree stumps as well as the remnants of an amusement park destroyed by a hurricane. I believe this takes place in southeast Virginia which was where I was raised and, quite frankly, I could not wait to leave. The pine trees; the chilly damp air; and the misery of the area are not missed by me. Makes me shiver to think about it which is why I believe the author chose this area for her story. The characters are created like people you may have known years before complete with their original faults. I found myself grimacing as I read the book because a lot of it is so gloomy.

After reading Silent Girl by Kelly Heard, I was so excited to read her next book, The Woman in the Water.

When her sister, Holly called, Felicity didn't want to amend things with her. But when a call reaches to her that her sister died drowning, Felicity returns back to the small town she vowed never to return back. The police thing it was accidental drowning but Felicity things that Holly's death was no accident. With Holly's daughters Tess and Frankie under her care, Felicity tries to find the answers she had left behind, many years ago and someone is out there to stop her.

Just like the Silent Girl, the plot was intriguing and started fast paced. There were some twists and turns here and there and the story is mainly told from Felicity's point of view. However, the story to me was a bit too direct and the story itself was a bit predictable. There were some sense of horror theme in the book but not really related to the book. So overall, it was an unputdownable thriller, and despite the flaws, the book will keep you hooked until the end.

This was a fast paced thriller with some twists and turns--worth four stars!

Spooky and atmospheric! This book is a bit of a slow burn “whodunnit’ with a side of romance. Felicity returns home to her small town after finding out that her sister, Holly, died in a tragic drowning accident. As she installs herself as guardian to her young nieces, she does some digging to find out why her sister drowned in a place she never would have gone on her own. Felicity begins to suspect something sinister happened to her sister. This suspicion is not only unsettling but poses a dangerous problem for her; if someone killed Holly because of the secrets she held then Felicity could be next. Thank you Netgalley, Bookouture, and the author for this eARC in exchange for my honest review. Available now

Brilliant!!! I did not expect to get so drawn into this storyline and it was so intense!! Felicity receives news of her older sisters death, assumed to be an accident, but when she goes home to help with her nieces she realizes that things aren’t adding up. She has self-doubt and a painful past but she is tougher than she knows. These characters came to life and this book is hard to put down. Family drama and a suspenseful plot, I loved it!!

I received an advance digital copy from Netgally of "The Woman in the Water", by Kelly Heard, in exchange for my honest review. I have not read this author before.
This fast paced psychological thriller begins with Felicity in Saint Thomas learning her sister, Holly, is dead. They are estranged & the past emotional trauma, secrets and lies is dredged up.
The chapters alternate between "now" and "before", which is not my favorite format.
Felicity returns home to a spooky swamp, threats, nightmares, old high school lovers, friends and enemies. She has been tasked with the care of Holly's two children. No one is who you think they are and discovering the truth of her sisters death may be her undoing.
There were times when the pace of the story didn't hold me, the timelines were off occasionally & an unrealistic scene that annoyed me.
In summary, some plot twists, surprises and good resolution in the ending.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Woman In The Water' by Kelly Heard.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Kelly Heard, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 22nd July 2021.

This is the second book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'The Silent Girl' which I would recommend.

I was originally drawn to this book by its intriguing and eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train, The Woman in the Window and The Silent Patient.' I am a huge fan of 'The Girl On The Train' so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a fan of Kelly Heard and if this is as good as 'The Silent Girl' it is sure to be a good read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of 52 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in the USA 🇺🇸.

This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonist is Felicity Wheeler. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on.

This book is quite well written with very vivid descriptions that places you right next to Felicity while everything is going on. The synopsis describes the book well and the cover and title suit the storyline perfectly.

The storyline pulls you straight in with the first few chapters but then I did find it became quite a slow burner and you didn't see much 'action' for at least 50% of the book. However, although it was a slow started I found when it started picking up it became a rollercoaster ride of suspense, mystery and tension. I was intrigued by what had really happened with both Felicity and Holly and was kept on edge by what was going on with Felicity, I don't want to mention too much as I don't want to spoil it for future readers I was quite surprised when I discovered what had happened to her in the past and what was going on in the present so extra points to Kelly Heard for that as its getting harder and harder to surprise me.
It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture. I absolutely loved the setting and atmosphere especially with the swamps and the Spooky abandoned fairground, that definitely gave it the fantastic creepy vibe throughout that I enjoyed.

The characters are all very unique, strong and also complex. Each of the main characters definitely had a history and it was intriguing to watch the character development and relationships bond and break. I believe the story is strongly based on how certain relationships can affect us and how we cling on to certain people and seem to become blind to the toxic nature of some and mistake the genuine relationships of others with something unkind. I really enjoyed watching Felicity's relationships between her mum, Frankie and Tess especially grow and develop throughout the storyline.

Overall a mystery packed rollercoaster ride of suspense and tension.

Genres covered in this novel include Psychological Fiction, Gothic Fiction, Noir Fiction and Psychological Thriller amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of 'The Girl On The Train' and fans of Kelly Heard.

I am blown away by this book, honestly, it was exceptional and I cannot rate it highly enough!

It's really hard to pick a stand out aspect of this book, as the whole thing was just executed perfectly, but I think for me it was the characters. They made this book with their dialogue and their relationships and growth throughout the story. I also loved how they reacted and interacted in the different situations and scenes, nothing was predictable from them at all and it really helped to bring enjoyment to the story.

A personal favourite of mine was the scenes between Dawson and Silas later in the book, they managed to break the tension in the funniest way!

Not only were the characters executed perfectly, so was the atmosphere and intrigue. The entire book managed to keep this sense of fear and foreboding, without ever dropping off or losing track. And because the book was quite a slow burn, it definitely kept your attention, but to be able to continue that need to know what was going on throughout the whole story was just very well done.

The Woman in the Water was brilliantly written, everything was written in the right way or at the right time and whilst it took a while to build up to the main plot of the story, the quality of the writing was enough to keep you reading, without even needing to have a story line.

Although, it did have a story line I would like to add! And what a story it was. It was hands down one of the best books I had read for a while. The main story was woven so well with the supernatural element of the lake (which wasn't overpowering at all) and the childhood/history of Felicity and her sister Holly, everything was layered together like a piece of puff pastry. (Pls excuse my food references haha).

My other favourite thing about this book is how it answered all of our questions in the end, we were left with no questions and everything was rounded off nicely - which I absolutely love!

On the whole, The Woman in the Water was just a thoroughly entertaining book, it was so twisty, I had absolutely no idea what the pages would hold and every time I turned the page I was shocked or had goosebumps (in a good way), you cannot escape the darkness and eerieness of this book.

Felicity Wheeler returns to her hometown following the tragic death of her sister Holly. She finds herself the guardian of her sister's children. Amidst her own grief and that of her nieces, Felicity is determined to prove that her sister's death was not an accident. But she has her own past to battle as well...
The Woman in the Water is a gripping psychological thriller about the mystery surrounding a woman's death and the secrets of the past.
Felicity has been on the run from her past for over a decade. She left her hometown in disgrace but now feels compelled to return to her family and hometown to care for her nieces and comfort her mother. She is confronted by the smalltown prejudice which drove her away in the first place but she is stronger emotionally now and fights back.
Felicity is sure that Holly's death was no accident. Her guilt at their estrangement leads her to search for answers which then puts her in danger too. Along the way she reunites with old friends and addresses the past but also unsettles secret enemies who want to quiet her accusations.
The book is written in Felicity's first person narrative of 'before' and 'now'. This allows us to see and understand her responses to events in both the past and present. The 'before' part was not chronological and there was one conversation that I got confused about where it fitted in the order of events. The mystery behind Felicity's past wasn't a surprise but I felt it was little ambiguous.
There is a slightly spooky element to the book as the setting of the abandoned fairground in the swamp. The dark, dangerous and insidious nature of the water is very atmospheric and creates an oppressive vibe which replicates Felicity's emotions in response to being home.
The Woman in the Water was an engaging psychological thriller with a big dose of spookiness as well.

Felicity Wheeler returns to her hometown after her sister Holly is found drowned in the swamp. The death is ruled an accident but Felicity knows her sister would never be out on that water, especially in a storm. Not after what happened all those years ago. Returning to take care of her nieces, Felicity begins to investigate her sister’s death. But there is someone who doesn’t want her to find out the truth. Someone who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets hidden.

The Woman in the Water is a story full of secrets and suspicion. A story about a fractured family, tragic death and search for answers. Told in dual timelines we follow as Felicity returns to a hometown full of painful memories to fulfill her sister’s wishes and try to find out what really happened to her the night she died. It is well written, with some beautiful imagery and prose, and there is a ghostly atmosphere at times that I loved, though I would have liked even more. I did find it predictable in places, but the author leaves you with enough doubt and questions to keep you turning the pages and invested in the story.

I liked Felicity. She is flawed, layered and relatable. Before Holly’s death she hadn’t been home since leaving under a cloud of rumour and scandal. In the flashbacks the author slowly unveils the traumatic and life-changing events that broke the sisters’ relationship and led to Felicity leaving home so young. The author acutely conveys the torment and pain it causes Felicity to face her past and be back in her hometown.

Dark, tense and twisty, this was a quick and entertaining read that fans of the genre will enjoy.

Felicity fled her small hometown as a teenager after a traumatic experience and never looked back. When her sister Holly drowns under mysterious circumstances, Felicity returns to care for her young nieces. Although Holly’s death is quickly ruled accidental, Felicity believes her sister would never have been where she was found and is determined to find out what really happened.

This book has a lot going for it. The suspense and the pacing were pretty good, with enough red herrings thrown in to keep the reader guessing. The female relationships in this novel are skillfully portrayed as well. I really liked the realistic feel of Felicity’s interactions with her nieces; her older niece’s wariness and protectiveness of her little sister were understandable, and the way the relationships thawed and grew gradually was heartwarming. The evolution of Felicity’s relationship with her mom is also well done, as past secrets come to light and the women begin to understand each other.

A few things about this novel didn’t work for me. First, too much focus on romance, which I wasn’t expecting and felt out of place, especially in the later part of the book as events draw toward the climax. I’m also getting a bit tired of suspense novels that rely on women making poor choices to keep the story moving. It wasn’t remotely believable that Felicity would trust a person who hurt her so badly in the past and fail to question their motives.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Felicity gets a call in her St. Thomas home informing her that her sister has drowned and has named her guardian of her two daughters. Shortly after arriving at her mother’s home with Tess and Frankie, her two nieces, strange events begin to occur. Her mother’s rooster is killed and left with a gift tag for Felicity attached to it, her rental car begins to act up and the mechanic cannot find anything wrong with it. She cannot sleep because she is fearful for the safety of her nieces. Anyone she confides in just does not believe her. She begins to feel her sister’s death was no accident but cannot prove it. After renewing her romance with her high school boyfriend, she tells him why she left home many years ago; then her niece disappears and while searching for her niece she is attacked. Ultimately, she discovers her suspicions were true. There is not much mystery here; one or two small twists you did not see coming, but all in all a lacklustre book.

This book is a mystery thriller that verges on the spooky at times. It is atmospheric, the writing is evocative and very descriptive, and there are multi-layered incidents and relationships that are unraveled. Due to a tragedy, Felicity has to return to the home that she left as a teenager. Her reasons for leaving are slowly revealed throughout the story via flashbacks. I thought she was a complex character. She obviously has a chip (or several of them) on her shoulder due to past events. When she arrives home, it soon becomes apparent that somebody (or more than one person) doesn’t want her there. The author does a fantastic job of dropping hints here and there keeping both Felicity and the reader guessing – and very off balance. the imagery of water and what a big part it plays in the plot was particularly effective. Highly enjoyable read. For more details, please visit Fireflies and Free Kicks. This review was based on a digital copy of the book from Bookouture.

Felicity has been away from her home town for a long time, but rushes to return when she gets the sad news that her sister has died and her children have been left in the care of Felicity. She wants to look after the two girls while also investigating her sister's death in the water - because she doesn't believe it was an accident. Could it be related to events that happened in the past? Could old secrets mean that Felicity and her nieces are in danger?

A thrilling story that keeps you guessing until the end. Full of secrets, misunderstandings, suspense and twists, I recommend this book.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.

Felicity returns home after her sister, Holly, passes away, presumably from accidentally drowning in the swamp, and she is named guardian for her two nieces, Tess and Frankie.

There is something hidden in Felicity’s past that she will have to confront and there is definitely more to Holly’s death than meets the eye. How many secrets are hidden around the water?

This was a solid read!! Engaging and quite the setting. It really sucked me in, and I always looked forward to picking this one up. The author had a way of keeping your attention and making you feel like you’re right there with the characters.

Thank you NetGaley for this advanced reader copy in exchange tor an honest review.

This book will be available July 22, 2021.

The Woman in the Water has so many angled and hidden secrets. Readers will need a road map to keep the journey straight. Two estranged sisters never have the chance to reconcile because Of deep seated events that altered their relationship. One sister fled and the other stayed, only to meet her death. The focal point is a creepy abandoned fair ground that’s enveloped by swampy water. I thought I had part of the mystery solved, only to be partly right. One character is to blame for most of the past secrets and I did figure out the culprit. It’s a creepy, curvy, keeps you guessing kind of story. Beware of swampy fairgrounds. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the early read.
