Once a Predator

by Zoe Cannon

Formerly a feared vampire hunter, Quinn hung up her stake, married a nice vampire, and moved out to the suburbs. But someone has been killing young women downtown. Someone who sounds a lot like her supposedly-reformed husband. Quinn can feel the adrenaline of the hunt in her veins again… and she likes it.

This short story is 4900 words long. It is also available in Lonely Streets, an urban fantasy short story collection.

About the author

** I no longer use Goodreads to track my reading. My subjective rating and review standards aren’t likely to be useful to other readers--how would it help anyone else to see that I rated a book 5 stars because I read it at the exact right time in my life, or 2 stars because it used a popular trope I dislike?--and I’m not comfortable with the idea of readers and even authors taking them as objective measurements, or worse, constructive criticism. I now track my reading privately, but send out monthly book recommendations through my mailing list at https://www.zoecannon.com/newsletter. My old ratings and reviews are still here, but don’t take them as anything other than personal reactions. I may not see messages and friend requests. **

Zoe Cannon may or may not be a supervillain out to conquer the world through writing. When not writing, she can be found perfecting her schemes for world domination, plotting against her archenemies, and staying up too late reading a book. Her secret lair is rumored to be located somewhere in southern New Hampshire.

A dark and dangerous (and domestic?) urban fantasy short story that's about self awareness as much as it is stake-slinging. While it could seem a little odd (though Quinn does seem awful quick to stake her long-term partner, and what did he think he'd achieve by needling her one way then contradicting himself? Maybe a bit more info on their actual domestic life and probably relationship breakdown over time would have helped me understand their attitudes), I found it an engaging quick read.

Entertaining vampire listening 🎶🔰

This is free on Amazon.

She has retired from the hunt and is out enjoying the night 🌙 when there is a scream. There is the Hunter but he retired. What a great quick supernatural story that I would recommend to 👍 readers looking for a quick read. 2023 👒😀😡💘

A story that made me crave more like the hunter craved the hunt.
Hopefully the author will revisit Quinn. Or maybe she has. I will have to check.
